New sound (er) as in bigger, digger, mixer. This is a digraph (a combination of two letters representing one sound).

(a) Read the er story and ask the following questions: What machine made the er sound? What shapes did they cut out? What did they use to decorate?

(b) Jolly Phonics songs: Play the song for the children and get them to do the actions and learn the words of the song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2HYM9VXz9k&t=3s

Get your child to read the following words and they are only allowed say /er/ not /e/ and /r/ separately! They will need a bit of help to decode. Stretch out the sounds with them cloud, gradually getting

(c) Get the child to form the letters with their finger in the air with their fingers, on the table, on the back of their hands, etc, before writing them on paper. If you had a whiteboard or a chalkboard, they could practice on those first and write a word that has /er/ in it. i.e. “her, mixer, river”. Children could make the letters with playdough, in sand/flour, on sand paper, in rice, with lollipop sticks/match sticks, anything that’s sensory etc. Spend the week on the sound /ue/ and revise the other sounds covered. Get children to draw pictures of things starting with /er/, label them and write simple sentences. You could have the words written on a separate page and the children could copy them.

(d) Poetry- This Old Man

Repetition of money content from last week. Extension work 2cMoney- In Junior Infants, we focus on 1c, 2c, 5c.Use real money if you have it. If you don’t have 1c/ 2c/ 5c coins, draw some on cardboard and cut them out.

First, we will let them see all the coins 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, 1 euro, 2 euro. Name all the coins together with your child. This week we will focus on identifying 1c. Let them feel the money. Infants learn best when they have a sensory experience. Ask the following questions

Find the number on each coin? What is the picture on the front of the coin? Earth. Are both sides of the coin the same? Is there a picture on the back of the coin? What is the symbol on Irish coins? What shape is it? What material is it made from?

These coins are brown in colour and are smaller than the others. Put them in order of size. 1c, 2c, 5c. Which coin is the smallest? 1c Which coin is the biggest? 5c

Note: There is not a coin for each number. We have to use the coins we have to make up that amount/value. Eg there’s no 4 cent coin but we can use a 2c+2c=4c

Page 11: stconlethsns.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewHappy 5th Birthday Sara! She will celebrate on the 19th May. Enjoy the day with your family! If you have any tech issues or questions about

Sorting activity: Ask your child to sort the coins into 3 groups. 1c coins together, 2c coins together, 5c coins together.

Focus on 2c coins. Adding 1c coins is straight forward as its just counting in 1. Adding 2c coins requires skip counting as its counting in 2’s. Use real coins and ask them to count up the coins. 2c+2c=4c 2c+2c+2c=6c 2c+2c+2c+2c=8c 2c+2c+2c+2c+2c=10c Call out a value and get the child to draw the correct amount of coins. Focus on 1c & 2c questions only. For example: Call out 5 cent- Draw 2 2c & 1 1c coins. Do the same for 3 cent, 4 cent, 5 cent, 6 cent, 7 cent, 8 cent, 9

cent, 10 cent. This may sound easy but they must have a very good foundation level understanding before they start 5 cent coins next week. See powerpoint for extra activities. Toy ShopSet up a small pretend toy shop with a few toys for sale. Label the items with prices up to 5c. Today, we will only give the child, 1c & 2c coins to “buy” something in the shop. For example, the car costs 5c. The child must use the coins in their hands to pay for the item. 2c+2c+1c=5c. Enough to buy the car. Help them with the role play until they are comfortable to pay by themselves.

ONLINE MONEY GAMES: https://www.teachingmoney.co.uk/eurosite/euroindex.html Money Machine, Coin Drag, Count up,

Next week we will focus on 5c. Adding 1c, 2c, 5c coins. Buying items in a slightly more expensive shop.

In school, we break money down into teaching steps and there’s a lot of content. If you go too fast, the students can get confused as they didn’t fully understand the basic information.

Traffic, road accidents, helping people who need help, community support- looking after elderly, making sure everybody follows the law. What does a garda use? What does a garda uniform look like?
