Donation to DCC in memory of Sue

A local family has donated over £6,000 to DRI in memory of their beloved relative who saved the lives of nine people by registering to be an organ donor. Sue McCormack was looking forward to her wedding anniversary, planning to retire and spend more time with her grandchildren when she was suddenly taken ill in 2016 and rushed to hospital. Tragically, Sue’s family were given the devastating news that she had suffered a bleed on her brain and there was nothing medics could do. Sue, who had always been supportive of organ donation and had registered with NHS blood and Transplant, had made her wishes very clear: If anything was to ever happen to her – she wanted to help others. Ultimately, Sue’s thoughtful actions meant that three adults and six children who needed organ transplants are now living better quality lives. The McCormacks, residents of Moorends, weren’t letting Sue’s legacy stop with the nine lives she saved. As a way to say ‘thank you’, they began fundraising in her name in order to make a donation to the Critical Care Unit at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. Sue’s husband Nick said: “Sue had the kindest heart in the world. She would talk to anyone and you’d be talking for hours once you got her started. She was the life and soul of every party – first on the dance floor and the last off. She’s missed by so many people and that really shows in how much support we’ve had with the fundraising. Everyone who knew her has wanted to help and we’d like to thank all of our family and friends, and everyone at the Canal Tavern in Thorne for all their support and fundraising efforts.” The McCormacks raised £6,300 for the Critical Care Unit where they stayed and spent their last night with Sue. Nick said: “We wanted to give something back to Critical Care because the level of compassion they extended to Sue was exceptional, even down to making sure her hair was done and she had her glasses on when we said goodbye. All the staff were fantastic and couldn’t do any more than they did. We all miss Sue but we are extremely proud of the difference she made. Every time someone came in to tell us they had found a donor match we all felt comforted knowing that another family somewhere was getting good news. It really helped us through losing Sue so suddenly to know that something positive came from it.” Some of the money raised has been used to purchase a supportive armchair which allows patients on the Critical Care Unit, who would otherwise be confined to their beds, to sit up and even be able to spend periods of time outside in the fresh air. Donations to the service have also been used to refurbish and furnish a family room with a home-from-home atmosphere. Annette Trotter, Sister on the Critical Care Unit, said: “Nick and his family have been inspirational in how they have focused their energy on raising money for DCC. This large sum of money has enabled us to buy chairs to assist in the rehabilitation of our patients. These chairs allow ventilated but awake patients to sit out of bed in comfort. We have already seen positive benefits to the long-term rehabilitation of patients by having these chairs and we can’t thank the McCormacks enough. “I also want to take a minute to specifically thank Sue for the selfless act of becoming an organ donor. From such a tragic event she has managed to affect so many lives in such a positive way. Sue was a very special person and many people owe her a debt of gratitude that will be never forgotten – she was, and remains, a true hero.” If you’re not on the organ donor register and would like to sign up, you can register at organdonation.nhs.uk.

Urology 100 day challenge

As part of the 100 day challenge, sponsored by NHS England, Urology chose three departmental challenges to improve patient care.

1. Look at the referral pathway of patients referred to DBTH with continence issues. The referral pathway has changed for three GP practices (to be rolled out to the whole CCG next year). Patients with continence problems are referred to the Specialist Community Continence Service, for assessment Physiotherapy and medical treatment. Only if this fails are the patients then referred to Urology / Gynaecology.

2. Reduce the amount of patients attending DBTH with urinary catheter problems and those attending for catheter change. The team has amended the referral forms for patients with acute retention of urine and developed a referral form for the wards to refer patients to the Specialist Community Continence Service for either a Trial without catheter or for long term review and to give advice to the District Nurse if a problem occurs. This saves the patient attending the Emergency Department or having a Urology opa.

They have also developed a Catheter passport for all patients with a urinary catheter. 3. Set up a one stop prostate clinic.Currently patients with a raised PSA can have several hospital appointments before a diagnosis for prostate cancer this usually takes at least four to six weeks. The new clinic will reduce this to one or two visits and a quicker diagnosis. This will launch on 7 September with drop in sessions between 11am - 2pm in the Multi function room, DRI. It is in the best interests of all wards and departments to send staff to the launch as they will be using these forms and passports.

Publication of the Topol Review Interim ReportGame-changing technologies such as genomics, digital medicine, artificial intelligence and robotics will form a key part of the future of the NHS.

To enable NHS staff to make the most of these opportunities to improve services and help ensure a sustainable NHS, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care commissioned a major independent review, led by cardiologist, geneticist, and digital medicine researcher Dr Eric Topol and facilitated by Health Education England.

The Topol review is exploring how to prepare the healthcare workforce, through education and training, to deliver the digital future.

The interim report from the Topol review: Preparing the healthcare workforce to deliver the digital future, has now been published and we need your help to help inform the final report due this December. You can submit your evidence here: https://www.hee.nhs.uk/our-work/topol-review

Flu fighters: Will you be getting your flu jab? Flu season is right around the the corner and we're busy making preperations.

As a Trust it’s important our staff get the jab in order to protect themselves, their family and our more vulnerable patients from the flu virus. The vaccine helps the body create antibodies which in turn help in the fight against infection.

The flu vaccine protects against a number of flu strains which research indicates will be the most common during the next few months. Although the effectiveness of the vaccine can vary, if you’re in contact with patients on a daily basis it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Join the fight! Let us know if you're planning on getting your flu jab this year by taking this short survey

Flu season is nearIn September we will begin in our super-powered battle to vaccinate Team DBTH from flu, and we need your help!

We still require a number of Peer Vaccinators to help bolster our ranks of flu fighters and administer the jab to our frontline staff.

Ensuring that members of the team get the vaccine is of huge importance to the Trust, not only to keep staff fit and healthy, but also patients in our care.

If you are interested in becoming a Peer Vaccinator, please get in touch with Mandy Ostle.

Join the fight and help us vaccinate 80% of frontline staff this autumn!

Why you should get your flu vaccine As a Trust we place great importance in ensuring we are proactive in our fight against the flu.

On a personal level, most of us know just how rubbish it can be to come down with a bout of flu, but those who care for patients day-in-and-day-out can describe just how devastating its effects can be for our patients. For two years running, we have been the first hospital to vaccinate 75% of all patient-facing staff against the flu. This is an amazing achievement and one which we should all wear as a badge of honour. For 2018, we are doubling-down on this commitment and it is our goal to vaccinate 80% of our front-line before anyone else in the country. To aid in this ambition and to ensure we are as flu-safe as possible, we will also be switching to the quadrivalent vaccine – meaning that we will offer protection against four different strains of the flu virus, rather than three as in previous years. From mid-September onwards, our Occupational Health Team and Peer Vaccinators will be roaming the halls and corridors, offering the jab to those willing to go above and beyond in order to protect their patients, colleagues as well as friends and family against the dreaded flu. Like last year, there will be drop-in sessions and you will be able to request the team to come to your area or service. If you have never had your jab or are scared of needles, challenge yourself this year to get it. Each and every day members of Team DBTH work hard to offer the best quality treatment for patients – and this is just one more way you can achieve this. Keep an eye out for further flu information as it comes in the next few weeks when we will be explaining which strains the vaccine will cover, as well as tease more details of our upcoming, super-powered flu campaign.

Clinical Admin Review update

The review started in August 2016. The purpose has been to refresh this function so that it supports all Care Groups (soon to be Divisions) in the Trust, providing a patient-focused and top-notch admin facility.

If you cast your mind back, it was our ambition to make a positive difference to the working life of our admin staff, building upon the things that work, and improving the things that don't.

Changes to the Information Department There are some changes underway within the Information Department that they would like to update you all on. Within the Analyst Team there are two vacancies which they are aiming to recruit to over the next few months. Therefore, to ensure everyone’s information requests are dealt with in a timely and efficient manner, they now have a generic inbox where you can send requests for information.

If you require information, please email [email protected] detailing your requirements. The inbox will be monitored daily to pick up any requests that come and allocate them to members of the team. The team will aim to let you know within two working days who the request has been assigned to and an expected completion date. Due to the reduction in staff members it may take a little longer than usual to answer your request so please give as much notice as possible to ensure we can schedule the work in accordingly and meet your deadlines. Should you wish to discuss a request with a member of staff please call 642246 or 642251 We will provide a further update in due course following the recruitment process.

Duncan takes on the Great North Run Duncan Carratt, Information Services Manager and Staff Governor, will be taking on the Great North Run in September in aid of Prostate Cancer.

Duncan is hoping to raise £500 for Prostate Cancer UK to help beat the disease and help those diagnosed with Prostate Cancer.

The run is a challenging 13.1 miles but Duncan is no stranger to the course. A few years ago Duncan ran the race and managed to raise £1000 in support of Breast Cancer. He is hoping to beat his time from last year (2:00:11) and if he doesn’t he has pledged to donate £5 for every minute over - providing he doesn’t get injured!

Duncan said: “Ignoring prostate cancer won’t beat it. Prostate Cancer UK has a simple ambition - to stop men dying from prostate cancer so we’re taking on this challenge to help them with this goal. It’s also important to raise awareness of male cancer, something which we don’t talk about enough. So gents, make sure you get your prostate checked if you’re due and make sure you give everything else a (gentle) squeeze regularly and, if something doesn’t feel right, go and see a GP. These things can be picked up within two weeks and dealt with swiftly.”

If you would like to support Duncan and make a donation, you can do so through his Just Giving page or head over to see him and use the paper form.

RCN meeting The Royal College of Nursing are holding a Branch meeting on the 28 August 6.30 to 8.30pm in the Education Centre, Room 2, DRI. All members and staff who wish join and find out more about RCN are welcome to attend and ask any questions.

Changes to NHSMail

The way that NHSMail manages inactive accounts is changing in September.

NHSMail will be turning on an ‘automated lifecycle’ which will move inactive mail accounts through a series of statuses before eventually deleting the account. The types of account status will be:

• Active accounts: Your account will remain active providing that the password has been changed, an email has been sent or the mailbox has been logged into in the last 90 days. Active accounts will not be affected by the account lifecycle activities so if you log into your emails regularly you don’t need to change anything.

• Inactive accounts: An account will be marked as inactive if the password has not been changed, an email has not been sent, or the mailbox not logged into for 90 days. The account will remain as an inactive account for 90 days before moving to a deleted status. If you log into an inactive account or change the password it will be returned to an active account within seven days.

• Leaver accounts: An active account which is marked as a leaver as the user has left the Trust will remain as this status for 30 days to give a new NHS employer time to mark them as a joiner. An account which has been in the leaver status for 30 days will then be moved to a deleted status, if not joined to another organisation.

• Disabled accounts: An account can be marked as disabled by the Trust is the user is on long-term leave. The account can be re-enabled upon their return to avoid those on long-term sick leave or maternity leave losing their accounts. A disabled account will be moved to a deleted status after 18 months.

• Deleted accounts: A deleted account can be still be restored up to 180 days after being deleted. Once restored it will start as an active account again. Accounts that are not restored after the 180 days are permanently deleted. These accounts can no longer be restored and a new mailbox would need to be created for the user.

Look after your mailbox To make sure you don’t lose your email account, please make sure that you:

• Keep your password updates and reset it every 90 days. Further guidance on how to do this is available here.

• Manage your mailbox and regularly delete items. When your mailbox gets too big you won't be able to send or receive emails. For tips on cleaning out your mailbox, please click here.

Qii success in stroke rahabThe stroke and neurology rehabilitation team have recently introduced a rehabilitation programme tool aimed at embedding a 24 hour approach to rehabilitation, and increasing self management for patients.

With the help of a Qii coach and using the PDSA model, the team devised a tool, and launched in April 2018. The pilot ran for 2 months, and results have been significant.

Changes madePatients received a functional goal focussed rehabilitation programme which supported ward staff, patient and carers to undertake simple activities throughtout the day.

Improvements The results showed that patient rehabilitation was enhanced, ensuring a 24 hour approach to rehabilitation, and facilitating an improved patient self management concept.

Victoria’s art for heroes Victoria Wright, Therapy Assistant in Physiotherapy at DRI, is taking part in the Help for Heroes Creative Force Project, which showcased art produced by veterans, service personnel and their families who have used art as part of a recovery from physical or psychological injury.

Victoria’s partner is an army veteran who has been diagnosed with PTSD. They have both found benefit in using art as part of his recovery.

Victoria's preferred medium is watercolour paints and one of her masterpieces, titled Horace the Hare is on display at the Mall Galleries in London.

Victoria is also selling Christmas cards, featuring another of her watercolour characters, Antarctic Arthur, to raise money for the Help for Heroes charity which supports those with illnesses and injuries attributable to their service in the British Armed Forces.

Child Protection Information Sharing (CP-IS)

The Child Protection – Information Sharing (CP-IS) service is now live at DBTH.

CP-IS is an NHS England sponsored work programme dedicated to information sharing for a higher level of protection to children who visit NHS unscheduled care settings such as: accident and emergency; maternity; minor injury units; out of hours; paediatric wards and walk-in centres.

The information sharing focuses on three specific categories of child only:• Those with a Child Protection Plan (CPP)• Those children ‘Looked After’ by the Local Authority (LAC).• Any unborn child that has a Child Protection Plan.

Alerts are now visible next to the child’s name when they attend any of our Emergency Departments or Minor Injuries Unit. They look like this:

This indicates that the child is in one of the three areas above. Staff can then access the Summary Care Record as this is where the information is held. The information is limited to the kind of plan, when the plan was instigated and the originating authority with telephone number. It will look like this:

You can ring the number to share information about the child if necessary. If a child in one of the categories attends and there are no concerns you may not have to do anything. An automatic alert is sent to the social worker or team looking after the child. This will let them know the child has attended our hospital but no further details. They will have the option to ring for further details but their contact is the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children.

This does not replace any current processes for referring. It enhances information sharing. You have a duty to report a child to children's social care if you think they are at risk of harm and the usual process should be followed.

There will be further information and department visits from the Named Nurse over the next few weeks. For further information please do not hesitate to contact Elizabeth Boyle, Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children 01302 642436.

Shortage of O Negative Blood

Due to the shortage of O neg blood, changes to practice will be implemented as 1 September 2018.

NHS Blood and Transplant usually try and keep at least six days stock at any time in order to meet the needs of patients. They currently only have around 2 days' stock of O negative.

O negative is the ‘universal’ blood group and is often used when a patient’s blood type is not known, like in emergency situations.

From 1 September 2018 we will stock two units of O RhD Negative and two units of O RhD Positive at DRI and Bssetlaw to issue in emergency situations. Mexborough will continue to hold only O RhD negative units.

Donate Today NHS Blood and Transplant have recently contacted DBTH to make an appeal for new donations.

This is especially pressing at the moment because, due to the current weather conditions, stocks of O Negative blood have dropped to approximately half their usual amount. This shortage poses a major issue, as this is a universal donor group which can be given to almost anyone in emergencies.

Consequently, there is an urgent need for people with O negative blood, along with other priority groups like B negative and RO, to donate.

With that in mind, if you are in the position to make such a contribution, please contact the NHS Blood and Transplant call centre (0300 123 23 23 23) who will book an appointment for you. Alternatively, you can also visit www.blood.co.uk.

Female patients with no known blood group will be issued the O RhD negatives red cells.

Male patients with no known blood groups will be issued the O RhD positive red cells.
