A special visit from Jinan, ChinaA VIP healthcare delegation from China has paid a visit to DRI to see how an NHS Teaching Hospital provides care. Made up of hospital presidents and government officers, the delegation travelled from the capital city of the Shandong Province, Jinan, to better understand how we care for our elderly patients. The visitors also explored how we run our acute healthcare services, as well showcasing the Quality improvement Medical Education and Training (QiMET) Project. QiMET is the UK’s first 'Hybrid International Emergency Medicine' Training Centre and offers training to overseas medical schools to provide an international rotation of qualified doctors. The Trust will regulate QiMET UK going forward on behalf of the founders: Dr Subedi, Dr Khan and Dr Aylott. The goal for QiMET is simple: To improve the quality of care for patients and provide value for money for the NHS in the UK. This project is unique, as it enables overseas medical trainees to earn, learn and, most importantly, return, providing a sustainable workforce for the UK and addressing the global shortage of qualified doctors. Following the visit to Doncaster, proposals are being drawn-up to set-up QiMET 5,000 miles away in Jinan. The group from Jinan are looking for a potential partnership and knowledge exchange opportunities with the Trust in the near future. They were particularly interested in the excellent care that we provide for elderly patients, as well as our person centred approach to looking after our most vulnerable visitors. They were given an insight into a number of projects at the Trust which have improved care for this group of patients, including a campaign to get patients up and dressed in the mornings to avoid ‘PJ paralysis’, and an initiative to reduce the number of falls and pressure ulcers in hospital. Lynne Rayner , Advanced Nurse Practitioner for Care of the Elderly, said: “We have been focussed on providing person centred care for our older patients and it’s good to see that our efforts have been spotted across the world. The visit from Jinan was a great opportunity for us to share the work we have done here to reduce the number of falls and pressure ulcers on our wards, and some of the homegrown ideas that have been produced by our staff to improve our patient experience and make sure their care is centred around their individual needs. It’s humbling to think that some of the models of best practice, originating here in Doncaster and Bassetlaw and may now be used to improve care in China.”

The delegation presented DBTH with a traditional piece of Chinese parchment intended to bring good fortune and a painting of an orchid flower for prosperity.

DBTH ‘Stops the Pressure’ for one month For the second time this year, we’re celebrating a whole month without any of our patients developing a severe, hospital acquired pressure ulcer (HAPU) across all of our sites and wards. We saw October come and go without any severe HAPUs reported. This achievement coincided with the run up to national ‘Stop the Pressure’ day on 15 November, which aims to increase awareness amongst healthcare professionals of the damaging impact of pressure ulcers. Moira Hardy, Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals, said: “I am extremely pleased that we are seeing sustained improvements in patient care. It’s all thanks to the

impressive work of our staff, who go above and beyond on a daily basis, putting best practice into action, for the benefit of our patients with their extraordinary dedication and proactive thinking. They really deserve a spotlight for taking such pride in their work and for consistently putting patient safety at the heart of everything they do.”

DBTH also achieved a severe HAPU free month in March 2018 and is continuing to make this a frequent occurrence. In fact, some areas of the hospital haven’t seen a severe HAPU for several years. For example, the Surgical Assessment Ward at DRI have just celebrated 1560 days - meaning they haven’t reported one since 2014!

Montagu Remembrance Service On Friday 9 November, a Remembrance service was held in the Rehabilitation Centre at Montagu Hospital. Officiated by Father Joseph Aylookunnel, the ceremony was attended by a local choir, military personnel from the 7th Parachute Battalion and Joe Kelsey from the Light Dragoons Cavalry Regiment. Meanwhile, Dr Mark Iain Bright, Public Governor, was also on hand to lay the wreath. A two minute silence was held and the 'Last Post' sounded as we remembered and honoured those who gave their lives in the service of our country and its cause. Our thanks go out to everyone involved, especially Carole Markham and Michelle Walton, Rehab Activities Coordinators, who were instrumental in organising the service. It is fair to say that this would not have been possible without their commitment and dedication.

SBS: December Payroll To account for the upcoming Christmas holidays, pay day will be early in December, occurring on Friday 21. Naturally, this will have an impact on the various cut-off dates that are in place for submitting payroll information, as everything will need to be completed more promptly.

• All manual documentation must be with Elaine Peel in D Block, DRI by no later than 12 noon on Monday 3 December.

• All electronic information must be sent to SBS by close of play on Monday 3 December.

Any information received after these dates will not be processed until January 2019 salaries, so it is important that you process all information in a timely manner. Introducing IT drop-in Sessions for Bassetlaw As of Tuesday 19 November, a drop-in service will be available at Bassetlaw Hospital, offering support for all IT related issues.

Meanwhile, the facility will also take care of general IT requests, such as the replacement of keyboards and mice, and so on. This is sure to be a very useful resource for all staff at Bassetlaw, giving the team much-needed access to prompt and convenient IT support. The sessions are available at Bassetlaw every Tuesday and Thursday, running from 9am to 12pm and 1pm to 5pm.

If you are based at DRI, the drop-in hours are available from Monday to Friday, during the hours of 10am and 12pm, and will reopen again at 2pm to 4pm. Alternatively, you log a call with the help desk on ext. 644190.

View your Payslip early Back in October 2017, everyone in Team DBTH was given access to the ESR portal.

With this application, staff are able to view their own personal information and download electronic copies of their payslips. What’s so beneficial about this is that these payslips are made available prior to payday and, in most cases, before a physical copy is despatched from SBS. In other words, via the portal, you are able to check your monthly payslip in advance of its normal delivery.

Guidance on how to view your payslip can be found here, by scrolling to the bottom of the webpage and clicking on 'Presentation: using the ESR portal'.

In addition to viewing your payslip, you can also use the portal to opt-out of receiving a printed version. This means that you will only get the online payslip going forward, which can be downloaded and retained on your PC, either at work at home. Rest assured that the online version is a mirror image of the printed one. To opt out, all you need to do is go into the ESR portal and open the pay and rewards tab on the left hand side. From there, click on 'opt out of Printed payslip/P60'. Doing so will open a new page where you can select the option to opt out of receiving a printed payslip.

Freedom to Speak Up GuardiansIf you think something is wrong, it’s important that you feel empowered to speak up and air your concerns. We’ve created a short survey in order to gauge how much Team DBTH know about our Freedom to Speak Up Guardians.

Please take a few minutes to complete it here.

Screening Team visit MINDThe Trust’s Health Screening Team has recently visited Doncaster MIND, in order to inform local people about the importance of eye screening, in particular for those living with diabetes. This is crucial, as people with the condition are at risk of diabetic retinopathy. Often brought on by high blood sugar levels, it can be incredibly damaging to the back of the eye, potentially resulting in the loss of sight. During the visit, Siobhan Ireland, a MIND volunteer, shared with the team her difficulties with mental health and the impact it has had on her type-2 diabetes. Due to a number of factors, Siobhan had trouble managing her condition, which lead on to her having to use insulin to control her blood glucose levels. MIND, a local mental health charity, referred Siobhan to a diabetes nurse whose guidance and support enabled the local resident to take back control of her illness. With the support and advice from charity, the 28 year old is now happy, healthy and anticipating the birth of her first child.

Speaking about this, Ingrid Thomasson, Diabetic Eye Screening Joint Programme Manager at DBTH, said: ‘’Siobhan’s account highlights the importance of managing diabetes properly. It is crucial that people are equipped with sufficient knowledge about the condition, as the complication can have severe repercussions if not closely monitored and treated promptly. It is on account of this particular risk that everyone with diabetes, aged 12 or over, receives an annual invitation for an eye screening. These appointments are absolutely vital for detecting the condition before it is too late, especially since there are no clearly visible signs or symptoms to speak of’’.

Keen to repay the organisation for their exceptional support, Siobhan is now a volunteer. Speaking about this role reversal, she said: ‘’I was so keen to give back to the service after everything they had done for me. We provide such a valuable service at MIND and it’s such an honour to now be a part of it. After all, it is thanks to them that I am now in the position to look after myself. I have regular visits to see the midwife and my bloods are completely under control, which is fantastic, especially when compared to how things were previously.’’ If you have diabetes, there are a number of things you can do to reduce your risk of sight loss. As well as attending your annual screening appointments, make sure you exercise regularly, eat well and control your blood sugar levels and avoid smoking!

Relaunch of the Staff Experience Group As an organisation, we think it’s incredibly important to provide members of the team with the opportunity to provide feedback, as well as to raise issues and describe how we can be better as employers.

While we are currently running the Staff Survey and also have a very active staff Facebook group, we think that there is always room to do more.

On Tuesday 4 December we will host our first Staff Experience group at Bassetlaw Hospital, taking place within the Blyth Room at The Hub. The session will run twice, one from 10am to 12pm and the other from 1pm to 3pm.

All staff are welcome to attend and everything and anything can be discussed. Even if you only have ten minutes, come along. This group is about your experiences as a member of staff, describing what you think works well, what could improve and where challenges lay ahead for the Trust.

Thank you Team DBTH I've been a nurse with the Trust for 30 years, but this week I have experienced first-hand what a fantastic hospital we have. My 20 year old daughter was admitted on Monday 12 November from her GP, via A&E.

The staff on G5 and women's theatres have been excellent and she has received the best care possible. I cannot thank you all enough. It makes me extremely proud to be a staff member of such an amazing place!

Spreading the Christmas cheer The Children’s Ward at DRI has received a special makeover this week, with staff helping to spruce up the area with various lights and ornaments, just in time for Christmas!

This is all thanks to the local community, who have kindly donated the decorations to the Trust.

We truly appreciate this generosity, as it has really helped to create a happy and tranquil environment for the children and families who are visiting the ward this festive season.

We need your ideas!

Look after the pennies and the pounds will follow:

The Trust has been working hard to ensure we make the most of every penny spent but we need to keep up the momentum.

If each member of Team DBTH saved just a pound each month, this would equate to almost £80,000 each year.

Even little things can make a big difference.

Simple Swaps

If you have a bright idea to help the Trust save, get in touch with our teams in Efficiency and Effectiveness and Quality Improvement.or contact us via email: [email protected]

Kevin Lister, Procurement Category Specialist, found a new supplier of ward drapes and saved the Trust £50,000 per year.
