New Research Patient & Public Involvement GroupWe now have a Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) group set up at DBTH, intended to support the development of our own, Trust-initiated research projects.

PPI is widely acknowledged as improving the quality and relevance of research, and is both a requirement for national ethical approval and external funding applications. Support from the PPI group will include (but is not restricted to): • Reviewing proposals from a patient perspective• Helping to develop patient information literature• Advising on the recruitment of research participants• Advising on ways of sharing research results• Representing the lay public at research meetings

Please note, this resource can also support National Institute for Health Research fellowship applications, should a staff member be interested in pursuing a research academic career.

Requests for PPI involvement can be made by emailing [email protected] or for any further information please contact Julie Bury, Research fellow on [email protected].

Pathology system downtimeA planned short-term downtime of the internal Pathology IT system will take place on Wednesday 27 February 2019 between 8am and 1pm.

The system downtime is required to carry out an upgrade to existing software used within the laboratories. During this time Pathology will only process urgent samples, that is, samples received from the following areas:

DRI Bassetlaw A&E EPAU A&EICU CHOU ICUMAU SAW ATCSCBU/NNU Chatsfield Suite CAUDDU Ambulatory Care Unit SCBU/NNUAMU Ambulatory Care Unit

Samples from other areas:Urgent samples from other locations will also be processed if sent via the normal ‘Fast Track’ system. Please do not abuse this service as this could cause delays to genuinely urgent samples. During the downtime period, Pathology results will be available as usual via the ICE system.

Routine samples will be processed after 13:00. Initially, there will be a backlog of these samples, however, they will be processed as soon as possible with the service returning to normal later in the afternoon.

Please accept our apologies for any delays caused by this essential work. If you experience any problems please contact Paul Gravil, Head of Pathology Services on 01302 642822 ([email protected]) or Peter Taylor, ([email protected]) Pathology IT Manager on 01302 642826.

Our Syringe pumps are changing The training for the new B Braun Perfusor Compact Plus Syringe Pumps will begin at Bassetlaw on 25 February over a two week period prior to official implementation of the Syringe Pumps.

We must have 80% of staff trained prior to implementation. We have limited places available on each of the sessions so please book your place now. Ward and department managers, please be aware that at least one qualified staff member should attend the ‘Train the Trainer’ session.

To book your place please contact the Training and Education Department on 01302 642055 or alternatively please email [email protected].

Training at Doncaster Royal Infirmary will be arranged for the end of March 2019. Dates will be circulated to ensure all staff have appropriate notice once they are confirmed.

Road closure on site On Thursday 28 February there will be a crane on site at DRI to assist with the construction work being carried out on the new CT suite.

This will mean that the back road to mortuary will only be available to blue lights but the parking spaces will be available to the reserved spaces to the right hand side of the mortuary access.

Access to the mortuary will also be maintained. This has been discussed for the last few weeks with Histopathology and the Mortuary. For more information on the new CT scanner and suite and how it will help our patients, visit the Trust website here.

Resetting NHSMail passwords The IT service desk no longer perform NHSMail password resets, but there are a number of options if you find yourself locked out of your account or unable to reset your own password.

There are a number of people on-site authorised to reset passwords, to find out who you should go to in your area, access the ITSIM icon from your desktop (pictured).

If the people listed for your area are not around and you need to access your emails urgently, you can call the national helpdesk on 0333 200 1133.

Thank You to the Montagu Hospital Comforts FundRecent funding for waiting room chairs of £4250.00 and children’s play tables and chairs of £90.00 has been purchased for the patient waiting area in the Oral and Maxillo-Facial Department.

Staff would like to express their sincere gratitude to all the volunteers of the Comforts Fund. Andrea Johnson, Laboratory Manager said: “Our old furniture had become very old and tatty and was no longer fit for purpose. The new waiting room chairs not only look far more aesthetically pleasing and convey a much better looking professional healthcare environment but they have increased our ability to perform adequate infection control in the waiting area and it has certainly increased the comfort level for our patients making their wait a much more pleasant experience.

“The children’s play area is now refreshed and is a fun, colourful and safe environment for the children to play in. All in all this not only significantly improved the environment in the waiting area for our patients but has also given a much needed boost to the pride and morale of the departmental staff.”

Trust paging devices As you may be aware Health Secretary Matt Hancock has told the NHS to stop using pagers by 2021 for communications. At DBTH, we currently have two types of ‘pagers’.

Multitone Bleeps: Used primarily for emergency calls, baton bleeps, on-call services, this system has been in place for over 20 years. We are currently looking for a replacement for this system, one which takes advantage of smartphones (trust owned or personal).

Having smart phones that allow for multiple uses with increased clinical safety and a full audit trail is something the telecomms team are considering. A small team of clinical and operational staff will start work soon to help decide how we replace the bleeps and pagers with new communication tools that meets the Trust needs. PageOne wide area pagers: We have a smaller number of wide area pagers on contract used for a variety of services. Typically, pagers have been used when the user does not have to be on site but needs to keep in contact with work. In preparation for this project, please search in drawers, cupboards and other storage areas and if you have a pager that you do not use anymore, please return it to Ros Burdall, Telecoms Manager (Doncaster) or Lindy Shipman, Telephone Services Manager (Bassetlaw).

Dementia strategy launchOn Thursday 23 May, the Trust will be launching its four-year Dementia Strategy, including many projects which support people with dementia and their families whilst they are receiving our care.

At the heart of the strategy is our vision of becoming a person-centred organisation. This will bring out a substantial change in culture, but will have positive outcomes for our patients, relatives, visitors and staff.

ReSPECT process launching on 1 April The new national Recommended Summary Plan for Emergency Care and Treatment is launching in our locality on 1 April and we want you to be ready to embrace it.

An eLearning package to support the implementation of ReSPECT at DBTH has now been uploaded to the Trust’s eLearning platform.

This eLearning package contains specific details about the overall process and the forms. It is designed for staff that will be expected to complete the forms but the information contained in the package is useful to anyone who wants or needs to have a deeper understanding of the ReSPECT process.

To find this package please search for 272 ReSPECT. Dependant on how quickly you read, the package takes around 30 minutes to complete and includes a short assessment.

All medical staff and qualified ACP’s are required to complete this before the go-live date of 1 April.

There are some supported eLearning sessions being held in the education centre for staff who have difficulty accessing or using online learning but these sessions are not face-to-face alternatives to completion of the eLearning.

Further information for ward/clinic staff will be circulated by your managers in the next few weeks. For additional information, and some useful video clips on ReSPECT, please go to www.respectprocess.org.uk.

If, after completing the package, you need further advice or support, please contact Nicola Vickers, Resuscitation and Manual Handling Lead on ext. 642227 or email [email protected].

    Dementia Strategy

Collaborative working, with people with dementia and their families, and across the health and social care community as a whole is required to put the recommendations, projects and plans of this strategy into place. Our aim is to stand at the forefront of delivery of excellent care for people living with dementia; by building on the work the Trust has already done we can achieve this.

You can come and hear about some of the projects that the strategy will encompass at a launch event on 23 May, 12.30 to 3.15pm. For the full agenda please click here.

Happy retirement Steve! Steve Wells, Theatre Services Manager, has retired from the Trust after 38 years of service. Steve’s colleagues waved him off with a fond farewell.

Jasmine Centre Sponsored WalkMadison Millard, helped raise a total of £512 for the Jasmine Centre at DRI in a sponsored walk, trekking an impressive 20 miles across two days.

Madison was inspired to raise funds for the Jasmine Centre after they cared for her mother, who battled breast cancer on two occasions. Madison said: "The nurses showed kindness and compassion to my mum during both her stays and they supported our family throughout her care and treatment."

Thank you Madison for your stirling fundraising efforts. The donation will be used to improve patients experience and comfort in the Jasmine Centre.

Keeping Children Safe Online: Hints and Tips The internet can be a fantastic place, however there are many hidden dangers lurking beneath the surface, putting children at risk.

With so many everyday devices now serving as windows into the online realm - including mobile phones, smart TVs and gaming consoles - young people are constantly being exposed to the internet and all of its unrestricted content. Even when away from home, it is possible to remain connected to the web via wifi, making it harder than ever to control what your child sees.

Still, there are some measures you can take to keep them safe online: • Install software on their devices that can filter inappropriate materials • Place a computer where you can see the screen.• Teach them not to give out personal information about themselves, family or friends.• Talk to them about being careful with their online interactions and discourage them from meeting someone

they have only met online.• Report concerns to your local Child Exploitation Team by calling 01302 737777 for Doncaster, or 0300 500 80

    90 for Bassetlaw.

Meanwhile, you can also check in at the parent info website for further safety information about the internet and technology.
