Term 2 Week 2 Friday 8th May 2020
Wauchope High School Newsletter
An important update from our Principal:
Dear Parents and Caregivers
As of the 11th May we will move into Phase 1 of a managed return to school for students Years 7-10 – this is explained below. Students in Year 11 and Year 12 will continue with the timetable cycle they have been following this week. Year 12 students are at school on Monday and Wednesday with Year 11 students at school on Tuesday and Thursday. Our school day will be from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm every day and there will be no sport taking place on Wednesday. Students in Years 7-10 will be provided with opportunity to engage in physical activity during the day. It is important to understand that our primary concern during this process is for the safety and wellbeing of all students and staff. Ultimately we are aiming for a return to our normal school day, however we anticipate that this will still take a little time to achieve.
Schools have been identified as safe places for students, teachers and staff – however – we cannot afford to become complacent or this could rapidly change. It is for this reason that we ask that you keep up-to date with the school’s communication and ensure that we have correct contact details, both phone and email so that we are sure you receive important messages.
It is also important that no child is sent to school if they are feeling unwell or are displaying cold or flu like symptoms. Any child that begins to feel unwell during the day will be required to be picked up and taken home to ensure we prevent the spread of any infection on site. In keeping everyone safe and healthy I ask you to have a conversation with your child before they return to school stressing the importance of and need to maintain sensible distancing from other students and staff and sensible behaviour in relation to not sharing equipment and personal items.
Phase 1 – for Years 7 – 10 will begin on Monday 11th May The school will be opening classrooms to approximately 25% of our student population on each day of the week Monday to Thursday. Students will access school and our teachers one day per week during this time. This will be done on the basis of which house group your child belongs to.
Monday – Gordon (Blue) - Surname beginning A-D Tuesday – Kendall (Yellow) – Surname beginning E-K Wednesday – Lawson (Red) – Surname beginning L-Q Thursday – Paterson (Green) – Surname beginning R-Z
Classes based on Year groupings will then be formed and split across different spaces. Students will follow a modified timetable.
Students will need to bring their Weeks 3 & 4 learning packs with them on their designated school day as this is what they will be working on during the day. For the rest of the week your child should be at home continuing to work through the learning package provided. This will be a trial for this two week period (unless advised otherwise) and has been done to support whole family groupings being able to be at school at the same time. Families who need to send their child to school every day may continue to do so.
The school canteen will be open for recess and lunch – Monday to Thursday – however there will be a reduced menu at this time.
Please note - During this managed phase: We ask that you follow the school’s advice regarding changes to the school day and where possible only send your child to school on their designated day. CONTINUED OVER PAGE

There will be no sports day, excursions or inter-school activities. The school will not have an early finish on Mondays – each day will operate from 9:00am – 3:30 pm – and as per current school rules no child may leave the school grounds during the school day unless signed out and picked up by a parent/guardian. If dropping off or picking up your child stay in your car. Student phones will need to be YONDR’d – you may make contact with your child through the front office. Maintain social distancing by avoiding gathering outside of school gates. Support your child/children to continue learning at home on remote learning days. Communicate with us via email and phone wherever possible. Follow the health advice provided and keep your child/children at home if they are unwell.
Regards Glen Sawle, Principal

Students in Ms Stewart's Year 12 Biology class were
happy to be back at school this week, albeit at a social
distance. Here they are working through their lessons
for Module 7- Infectious Disease, which has probably
never seemed more relevant than it does now.
Wauchope High School is proud to be recognised as an
Epilepsy Smart School. An Epilepsy Smart School is a
school where anyone with epilepsy feels confident and safe and can be their best – in their school work, in sports and with
their friends.
The new Australian made automatic hand
sanitising stations have arrived,
complete with WHS school crest! The stations are located in high
traffic areas such as the foyer and
library.
We are now officially a recycling school!

LOVE FROM YOUR LIBRARY...
Sad passing of former student Ged Roods
Over the Easter weekend, the Wauchope community suffered and have mourned the sad loss of former Wauchope
High School student Ged Roods, after his sudden and very tragic passing.
Ged attended Wauchope High as a student between 2006 and 2011, where he completed his HSC in the last year.
During this time, Ged proved to be a popular student
with both staff and his peers, as he was a friendly,
good natured young man who demonstrated respect
and politeness at all times.
Sport was an area that Ged excelled in. He was a
member of the Cumberland team from 2008 to 2011,
where he captained the Open Rugby League team in
his final year. He represented in Rugby League,
Rugby Union, Touch, Cross Country and Athletics,
making the North Coast Rugby League team in 2011.
When he completed school, Ged went on to play
First Grade for the Wauchope Blues until injury
ended his career. He stayed involved as an official
and was then elected President of the club in 2017,
where he oversaw a rebuilding era and then a very
successful period in its history.
Ged also became a valued member of the Wauchope
-Bonny Hills Surf Lifesaving Club, where he was in the
Open Rowing crew, and was the Coach and mentor
to the Under 23 Ladies crew, known as the
‘Boatettes’.
The school and its wider community would like to share their deepest sympathies with the Roods family for the
loss of their grandson, son, nephew and brother. The entire Wauchope
community is much the poorer with Ged’s passing.

Year 12 Mathematics students have
been working in the library this week, making
great use of the document camera.
The document camera allowed students to watch Mr Grimson demonstrate how to solve equations.
This is another great piece of technology we have at Wauchope High.
