Principal’s Report

NAPLAN

The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy, (NAPLAN), will again be conducted across Australia for all students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9.

It is important that all students in Years 7 and 9 attend school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, May 11 to 13.

Students in Year 7 and 9 will sit for the Language Conventions and Writing assessments on Tuesday May 11. The Reading assessment will be conducted on Wednesday, May 12 and the Numeracy assessment on Thursday May 13.

It is expected that all students in Year 7 and 9 will do the NAPLAN, however there is provision for students to be withdrawn from the assessment. Withdrawal is a matter for consideration by parents and carers in consultation with the school Principal. If you wish you child to be exempt please make an appointment to discuss the matter with me and we will ensure that proper processes are followed.

Uniform

Several staff and community members have commented positively on the presentation of our students so far this year. We would like to thank all students and parents who have supported our uniform code and ask for your continu ed support during the cooler months .

Your support is essential for us to maintain a positive uniform standard and our data on uniform referrals certainly indicate our “out of uniform” problems escalate as the weather gets cooler. It appears that many of our students prefer to wear hooded jackets in winter and to accommodate this our P&C Uniform Shop have ordered hooded jackets in the school colour, with a school badge.

As winter approaches we ask for you support when purchasing winter clothing for students to wear to school. Please do it through our uniform shop, ensure that it is in accordance with the school uniform code and encourage students to wear it and any extra layers that need to be worn should be worn under the official uniform.

We have had some cases of students wearing thongs to school. Regardless whether students have a note or not wearing thongs is not acceptable as it poses too many Occupational Health & Safety problems. In these instances students have been either sent home to change, parents have been contacted to come in and pick up their children or students have been confined to the “sick bay” for their safety.

If there is a medical reason that prohibits a student from wearing protective footware for a period of time please do not simply write a note and send your child to school, come in as see us and work with us to determine which classes are safe to attend and help make alternative arrangements for those that pose OH&S risks.

Combined High Schools Representation

In the last Newsletter we congratulated Laura Cook on her selection in the NSW Combined High Schools Triathlon Team.

Last Thursday Laura competed in her age division against the best Triathlon students, from both public and independent schools, in Australia.

In this most elite company Laura was placed 5 th. This is an excellent achievement by an outstanding young athlete, congratulations Laura.

YEAR 9 BRIDGING THE GAP!

On 19th March, 25 students attended the Intergenerational Forum organized by the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council in the function room at the Water Treatment Works, Rosewood Road, Wauchope. This forum is designed to build positive relationships across the generations, bringing youn g and older people together to promote the spirit of co-o peration and provide for intergenerational connections. Students and older people were grouped together to allow for information sharing, discussions and fun activities. Areas of discussion were about the levels and type of crime in our area and to address the fear and perception of crime. All students were well behaved and were commented on their neat and tidy appearance, proving what great ambassadors our students are for their school. It was a great day and the plans are for the groups to come together again, possibly a BBQ to further build these relationships.

YEAR 9 CAMP IS ORGANISED!

A camp for Year 9 has been organised for Week 9 in Term 3, 14 – 17th September. The students will travel to the Gold Coast, staying at the Cedar Creek Lodges, Thunderbi rd Park, Mt Tamborine and going to Wet’n’Wild and Movieworld . Movieworld has offered to take the students prior to opening to educate them in different aspects of movie production, makeup, dance, movement and costuming. It is also a great opportunity for students to build relationships with their peers in a fun, educational experience. At this stage, approximately 70 students have indicated that they will be attending this camp however, as 2 buses have been booked, we can accommodate up to 90 students. If you are still interested in coming, please complete the Camp permission note and submit a $50 deposit. Further payments can be made on a regular basis to spread payment over several months. The cost of the camp is $380.00. If you have any questions please contact Mrs Cheg.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PARENTS: Wauchope High School Web Page www.wauchope-h.schools.nsw.edu.au

The new Wauchope High School Web Page is being built and changed from its basic form that was supplied to us by the NSW Department of Education. At this stage the school can only modify the front home page. On this page is a bank of generic stories that come from the department and Wauchope High adds to this bank with its own stories. In addition there is room for 5 photos on the front page. The idea is that stories and photos from the bank are randomly picked and displayed each time someone logs on. (At a later date, the school will have more control over the web site).

Our school protocol is not to mention students names with photos. Before loading up photos to the web site, a question pops up to query that this has not been done. Even the newsletter, that is attached by a link, is a special version where the student’s name have been removed from the photos and generic comments are added.

Even without names attached, some parents may not wish their students images to be placed on the internet. Look at the web page and if you do not wish your child’s photo be added to the school web page within these guidelines, complete the following form and return to the school via the front office or by mail. Mr Robert Henry (Principal)

Yr 8 International Project Awards

Year 8 students are being encouraged to enter the Yr 8 International Project Awards, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie West. Interested students see Mrs Logan. Students are to complete a project on a topic that is a matter of international significance using printed material or multimedia. Everything that concerns the people in more than one country is an international matter.

The project can win one of 3 prizes in our school. $100 for gold, $50 for silver and $25 for bronze and an Award Certificate. The gold winning entries will be invited to present their work at the Rotary club meeting, to compete for additional prize money of $150.

There you are something to do in the holidays if you wish! Students may be clever enough to talk to their Mind Matters teacher and incorporate this task into their Mind Matters task later in the year.

For more info contact Miss Logan or your Geography teacher.

On the 10th March, our girls open soccer team travelled to Wayne Richards Park in Port Macquarie for the 2010 Lower North Coast selections and knockouts.
