SIKA® BLACKSEAL® ELASTICTOOLS NEEDED

SIKA NEW ZEALAND

Like most building jobs, it’s all in theprep. Take a bit of time to prep thewall properly and you’ll have noproblems.

The first thing you need to do is getrid of any “dags” so you have got agood clean surface to seal on. Have achat to your blocky beforehand so heleaves you with flush pointed mortarjoints and no holes.

Remove any waste mortar from thebottom to expose the footing as well.

If there are any gaps in the mortar, you need to fill those in too youwant a smooth clean surface to workwith.

Put a bit of mortar mix on a spatulaand press it into any gaps or holes youfind. Remember if you don’t take thetime to do this prep properly, youwon’t get a watertight wall.

Now you’ve cleaned the wall, youneed to make sure the footing isexposed.

If the block work has been laid backfrom the edge of the footing asshown here, it’s very important toinstall a triangular fillet of mortar toallow water to run off to the drain coilrather than pooling at the base of theblocks.

SIKA® BLACKSEAL® ELASTICFOOTINGS

SIKA NEW ZEALAND

Wherever you have an external sharpcorner, you need to knock that sharpedge off because just like paint,Sika BlackSeal Elastic won’t sealproperly over a sharp corner. Youneed to chamfer it and a grinder isthe fast, easy way to do the job.

Use the grinder to take any sharpedges off the footings too.

If your wall has a control joint, give ita clean out with the grinder toremove any dags and sharp edges, give it a quick brush, then insert aSika PEF Backing Rod to fit snuggly inthe joint to a depth of at least 10millimetres. This provides a solid baseso the joint can be filled correctly.

For a professional finish, mask offboth sides of the control joint to keepthe block work clean and tidy.

SIKA® BLACKSEAL® ELASTICJOINTS & PIPES

SIKA NEW ZEALAND

To seal the joint, use Sika BlackSeal 1.It’s a bitumen based sealantspecifically for sealing joints underSika BlackSeal Elastic, or any otherbitumen based products.

Apply the sealant from the bottomup. Then work the sealant hard intothe joint to fill any gaps and get thebest adhesion. It’s important toremove the masking tapeimmediately before a skin startsforming so you get a clean, smoothfinish.

A good quality soft bristle brush iscrucial to doing a good job.

Apply the primer evenly, working itwell into the pores of the block workand remembering not to leave anysmall un primed areas.

SIKA® BLACKSEAL® ELASTICPRIMER APPLICATION

SIKA NEW ZEALAND

It’s a good idea to leave the lid on thepail when you’re priming andbetween coats. This helps ensure thesurface doesn’t skin and it stays fluidand easy to apply.

SIKA® BLACKSEAL® ELASTICAPPLICATION, FIRST COAT

SIKA NEW ZEALAND

On the second coat, apply it in thesame criss cross manner to ensurecomplete coverage (remember2m² per litre per coat), but this timelay it off in a uniform verticaldirection as you go.

SIKA NEW ZEALAND

Make sure the dimples on theSika Protection Sheets are facing in.This ensures any water will flow easilydown to the drainage coil at thebottom. Trim the sheets to fit.

SIKA® BLACKSEAL® ELASTICPROTECTION SHEET APPLICATION

SIKA NEW ZEALAND

A minimum 100 mil diameterdrainage coil must be installed at thebase of the footing and covered witha geotextile fabric.

The drain coil must have a minimumfall of 1 to 200 and discharge to anapproved drainage outlet.

Backfilling should be done with asuitable granular, free drainingmaterial such as scoria.
