“They went back to their own country by another route” (Matthew 2:12b)
You will probably be reading this in the midst of the 12 Days of Christmas. Perhaps you
are reading this on the Feast of the Holy Name (or as the secular world calls this day “New
Year’s Day). A lot has happened since the birth of Jesus and a lot more will happen as we
commemorate the life of Jesus: as St. Luke expresses it in his account of the Gospel, we
will watch as “Jesus [matures] in wisdom and years, and in favor with God and with peo-
ple” (Luke 2:51). As we remember Jesus’ maturing in wisdom and years, we are well
served to examine how we continue to mature in wisdom and the faith.
This leads me to the verse from Matthew that precedes this reflection. This is the conclu-
sion of Matthew’s account of the visit of the Three Magi – which we will celebrate on Janu-
ary 6 with our brothers and sisters from Abingdon and Kingston (keep reading this edition
of the Grapevine to find out more). Back to the Magi: the reason they chose to return
home by a different route was because of King Herod. Herod, when he learned that they
were seeking the “newborn king”, hoped to find where Jesus was in order to kill the child.
So, in order to not have to make a report to Herod, as he had instructed them to do, they
changed their plans. They went home by another route.
How often in our own lives would we be well served to take another route? This may be
regarding various and sundry relationships we have. Or perhaps in how things are going at
work; or perhaps plans that we made in the past for ourselves that no longer are in our best
interest. Making the change is not always easy; it is rarely easy. But sometimes, taking
the risk to go another route is exactly what we needed to do, and the results prove that all
too well.
As we travel with Jesus during the rest of the Christmas Season and in to the Season of
Epiphany, let us ponder the “routes” in our life that would benefit from us taking another
route. Let us explore these other routes and see if God may be inviting us to travel a ways
down these paths. May we be guided like the magi of old, and in our journey, find paths
that lead to a deeper understanding of God and a renewing of the Spirit to be about the
work of Jesus Christ.
Faithfully,
The Reverend Grant Ambrose

Inside this issue:
Installation of new vestry members: At the annual meeting in November,
Diana Joyce, Tom Hay, and John Galloway were elected to serve three-
year terms; Helen Brown was elected to a one-year term. They will be in-
stalled at the 8 January service @ 10:30 am. The first meeting of 2017 will be
6:00 pm on Tuesday, 10 January.
2017 Budget: The vestry approved the 2017 budget; with continued pro-
gress toward pledges, it is "affordable." We will publish the budget in early
January 2017. Ware Church is blessed by many parishioners who respond-
ed to the call to "walk in love" with Jesus Christ in financial support of our
ministries and outreach.
Budget & Finance Committee: With a focus on the 2017 budget, the com-
mittee will meet quarterly. In particular, the budget & finance committee
will closely monitor revenues and expenses. If it becomes necessary to re-
duce expenses, the committee will present timely recommendations to
vestry. The committee members include Grant Ambrose, Pat Roane,
George Bains, and Joe Brown.
Thanks– We are all grateful for the service of our retiring vestry members:
Jane Smith, Henry Moncure, Paul Crook, and Lee Brown.

Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Firstly, on behalf of all who serve in the Music Ministry, we pray you a very blessed New
Year! Secondly, I wish to thank all those wonderful people who serve in the Music Ministry.
They certainly made our Advent and Christmas Liturgies more inspirational and meaningful.
Truly, we made a "Joyful Noise"! The success of the program is dependent upon folks, both
young and not so young, who are willing to answer the call to serve. Whatever good we may
accomplish in our ministry is the direct result of coming together and praying for the
inspiration of the Holy Spirit. That comes first, and then we give our attention to the
technical aspects of implementing the music. I am grateful to our Sanctuary Choir, the guest
musicians who played on Christmas Eve, and all of the children guided by Jacgue Kilduff,
who offered their gifts for the 5:00 PM Liturgy. I also want to recognize the efforts of Peg
Moncure and the children in the Treble Choir. In addition to the music they offer, the
children pray every time they gather, and Peg has developed a program of focusing the
children's attention on Christian Outreach projects which reflect their service not only to our
Church Community, but also to our neighbors, (and furry friends!), in the area. It has been
an inspiration to me, and it reminds me why we come together as "Church". On a personal
note, I would be remiss if I did not express my thanks to our Rector for his collegiality, and
his generosity in allowing me into his pulpit. I pray that as we face a new year, we will
embrace new opportunities, and be willing to see what we can do to spread the Kingdom of
God. I ask your prayerful support, and when you experience one of your brothers or sisters
doing something in the Music Ministry that moves you, please take a moment and share that
with them. Although we function in the service of the Lord, it's affirming when His people
acknowledge our efforts now and then.
Sincerely in Christ,
Michael Monaco

CHORISTER OF THE
MONTH
Thanks to all of our Treble Choir members for a magnificent job. You contributed a great deal to our services during December. Many people have been very complimentary about your ministry.
Rehearsals will resume on January 4th. We will have dinner, practice and our final part of the ongoing holiday party. See you at 5:00.
Thanks also for your contributions to the Prime Timers luncheon. They loved the placemats and wine cork reindeer. You added a special touch to their Christmas celebration.
You also did a fine job with your community service project. Many items were collected for those in need. Thanks for helping others…….a very important part of the Christmas season.
Congratulations to Stephanie Riedell, our Chorister of the Month for November. The COM for December will be announced at our Jan. 4th rehearsal. Who will it be?

Christian Education Christian Education classes (K-12) are held during the 10:30 am service. The church provides Children’s Bibles, but it is encouraged for students to bring their own from home. An Adult Forum is held at 9:30 am on the second floor of the Parish Hall. Refreshments are served. Reflection
The Christmas tree was beautifully decorated by the Sunday School classes during our annual missionary project, Bar-bara’s Angel Cookies. This was one of many activities to take place on December 18. The previous week, ornaments were decorated and were a great addition to tree. The cookies were baked and packaged in beautifully wrapped bags with drawings by the late Barbara Roane and children. It was a pleasure to witness the many smiles of the recipients whose day was brightened by the children’s handiwork. Lessons & Carols We would like to thank Vice-Chairman Phil Bazzani and Gloucester Sheriff Darrell Warren for giving their time to partici-pate as readers for our Lessons and Carols. Farm-to-Table Our Farm-to-Table Sunday was amazing for the sumptuous homemade gumbo made by our own Fr. Ambrose. Stocked with beans, sausage and pepper that is all I can provide as the recipe will have to remain a secret and locked away in his recipe collections. Wreath sales The Christmas wreath sales were again a success and well supported by our congregation. Thank you to those who pur-chased wreaths freshly made by our Farmer’s Daughter in Woods Cross Roads. Advent breakfast The Advent breakfast satisfied a lot of hungry appetites and the advent wreaths created for the shut-ins and convales-cent homes were appreciated by all. The homes prominently displayed the wreaths in their foyer areas to welcome guests and demonstrated our community involvement to all. January 8 -- Jesus Baptism: Children need to hear, and believe, that God loves them, not just as a group but for who and what they are as individuals. Recognizing this can be a powerful affirmation of their personal identity and worth. When children are treated with dignity and have their opinions valued, they begin to believe that they are God’s be-loved children. Not all the children in the group will have had the opportunity to see a baptism in your congregation, or in another church, so they may not understand what it is about. Christian traditions may differ in theology about the meaning and practice of baptism. You might consider inviting a church elder to talk with the children about the way your congregation and denomination practices this sacrament. Last but not least… we must give thanks to those who have supported the youth in the recent months. Wes and Nell Jones for their delicious mice cookies, Chuck Crook, Fran Musick, Pat Roane, and Ceci Brown. We are welcoming a new season, I realize these busy schedules are quite demanding and fill each day. Remember you are always in our thoughts and prayers and we cherish the times spent together. I wish to acknowledge the wonderful support our Christian Education has received. The time that you have given, whether it's a phone call or a day, is greatly appreciated. I wish you hope, joy, and peace. Elizabeth (Beth) Richardson, Director Christian Education
After a hiatus over the fall, St. Tabitha’s Guild is starting back up! This guild is for people seeking to grow in
faith as we crochet and knit prayer shawls and other items for people in need of comfort and a reminder of
God’s love for them. We meet on the 3rd Tuesday of every month from 7:00PM – 8:00PM. All are welcome to
join us!
Next Monthly Meeting Time:
Tuesday, January 17, 2017; 7:00-8:00pm
We’ve had a surge in prayer shawls/wraps going out! This means, our stockpile is getting a little low and
needs building up again. Please bring a prayer shawl as soon as you finish it. Let Martha know if you have
questions or need assistance in making a prayer shawl.
Make sure to attend the monthly meeting for helpful tips and to visit with your St. Tabitha’s family. It’s always
the third Tuesday of the month!

parish hall on Saturday, January 14, 2017; 9:00am-12:00pm Ask Martha Ambrose for more infor-
mation or let her know if you will participate in this project.
