TODAY’S GAMEThe University of Detroit Mercy men’s

basketball team will continue Horizon League play when the Titans host Metro Series rival Oakland on Saturday, Jan. 10. Tip-off is sched-uled for 3:00 p.m. at historic Calihan Hall and will be televised locally on WADL and nation-ally on ESPN3 with Matt Dery and Earl Cureton making the call.

The game can also be heard on 97.1 The

Ticket with the voice of the Titans Dan Leach. METRO SERIESThe rivalry between the UDM and Oakland,

the Metro Series, will get a boost from the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame (MSHOF) and PASS Charters. The winner of the Metro Series will get $10,000 in scholarship funding and the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame Cup will be awarded to the winning teams between men’s basketball and women’s basketball.

The Titans and Golden Grizzlies are currently

tied 4-4 in the Metro Series through the fall competition. Oakland opened the rivalry with a thrilling 2-1 double-overtime victory in men’s soccer in Detroit, but the Titans rebounded with a 2-1 overtime win in women’s soccer. Detroit and Oakland then split the cross coun-try competition at the Horizon League Cham-pionships, with the Titans men’s team winning its second-straight League Championship. The next clash between Detroit and Oakland will be in men’s basketball on Saturday, Jan. 10, for a 3 p.m. tip inside Calihan Hall.

LAST OUTINGJuwan Howard Jr. led the way with 26 points

– 20 in the second half - as the University of Detroit Mercy used a big run in the first half to open a lead it would never give back in defeating defending Horizon League champion Milwaukee, 83-67, on Sunday afternoon inside historic Calihan Hall.

The win ended UDM’s six-game slide as it moved to 7-9 overall and 1-1 in the Horizon League.

Howard Jr. also had five rebounds and a

team and game-high six assists. Anton Wilson netted 12 points with five rebounds and three assists, while Paris Bass added 14 points and four boards.

UDM ended the game shooting 51.5 percent

(34-of-66) with 18 assists on its 34 baskets, while outrebounding the Panthers, 38-23. Detroit also had a 13-1 advantage in second chance points and a great showing by the bench outscoring Milwaukee’s, 32-10.

ABOUT OAKLANDDespite rallying from 18 points down in the

first half, Oakland dropped a 65-61 game to Cleveland State in Horizon League action on Thursday night. The Golden Grizzlies had three chances in the final 74 seconds to take the lead.

Andre Yates scored all 14 of his points for Cleveland State in the second half to lead the Vikings to a 3-0 start in Horizon League play.

Yates picked up two quick fouls and played only about 4 minutes in the first half, but Cleveland State (9-8, 3-0 Horizon League) opened up a 19-2 lead as Oakland started the game shooting 1-of-10 from the field.

Vinny Zollo’s 3 with 10:18 left in the half made it 24-6 before the Vikings missed their next 10 field goals and Oakland (5-11, 1-1) used a 22-3 run to take its first lead, 28-27, with 3 minutes left.

Cleveland State took a 34-30 lead into halftime.

Dante Williams led the Golden Grizzlies with 15 points, while Kahlil Felder finished with 14 points and nine assists.

SERIES WITH GOLDEN GRIZZLIESThis will be the 15th meeting between

Detroit and Oakland, with the Titans leading the all-time series 11-3. Oakland won both meetings last year, including a 77-69 comeback in front of 7,000 fans at Calihan Hall. Detroit’s last win in the series was a 76-60 victory on Dec. 3, 2003 at Calihan Hall.

THE HORIZON LEAGUE

Since the consolidation of the University of Detroit and Mercy College of Detroit in 1990, Titan athletic teams have found themselves referred to in many different forms. In order to maintain consistency, we ask that the

media and our opponents continue to refer to our athletic teams as Detroit or Detroit Titans, and eliminate the use of other names or abbreviations.

Thank you for your cooperation and your continuing coverage of the Detroit Titans.

DetroitDetroit Titans

University of Detroit Mercy

A NOTE TO THE MEDIA

Titan legend Bob Calihan leads the way with 306 wins while, Perry Watson (261) and Lloyd Brazil (185) are second and third, respectively. Calihan coached at Detroit for 21 years, while Brazil ran the show for 16 seasons and Watson 15. McCallum is currently in his seventh cam-paign with Detroit.

RED, WHITE AND BLUEDetroit is just one of 15 teams in the nation to

have both an active player and coach as mem-bers of USA Basketball. Senior guard Brandan Kearney was a member of the 2010 USA Youth Olympic Games Team that finished in fourth place with a 5-2 record in Singapore. He also played on the 2009 USA U16 National Team that captured the gold medal with a perfect 5-0 slate at the 2009 FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Mendoza, Argentina.

Coach McCallum was an assistant coach for the 2000 USA World Championship For Young Men Qualifying Team and helped coach the USA to a silver medal and a 4-1 slate. His son and former Titan Ray McCallum played on the 2011 USA World University Games Team that finished with a 7-1 record, but dropped its quarterfinal contest and returned home in fifth place.

UDM TO HOST NCAA TOURNAMENTIt was announced Monday (Nov. 17) that

Detroit was selected as one of the eight host sites for first- and second-round games in the 2018 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Champi-onship. University of Detroit Mercy will serve as the host institution with the games being played at the new Detroit arena March 16 & 18. Exact times and ticket availability for those contests will be released at a later date.

Downtown Detroit last hosted the NCAA tour-nament in 2009 and 2008, when the men’s Final Four and Midwest Regional were played at Ford Field, respectively. The Palace of Auburn Hills welcomed early round games in 2013. In addi-tion to the tournament, the area has welcomed other NCAA events, including the Men’s Frozen Four (2010), the Division I Wrestling Champion-ship (2007), and the Women’s Bowling National Championship (2009, 2011, 2013).

MEDIA NOTES

POST GAME PROCEDURES All post game interviews, except those needed for live television, will be conducted in the Media Room on the second level of Calihan Hall. The UDM Sports Information Department will let media know on gamedays about post-game items. On the road, McCallum and the players are available on a request basis only. All requests should be directed to SID Jeremiah Hergott before the end of the game.

INTERVIEW REQUESTS All player and coach interviews must be ar-ranged through the UDM Sports Information Office at least 24 hours in advance.

Generally the Titans will practice from 3-6:00 p.m., weekdays, with only the first 15 MINUTES open to the media. No interviews will be granted on game days, prior to the game. 8 13 All-Americans - 22 NBA/ABA Draft Picks

The Titans continue to enjoy playing their home games in Calihan Hall, long regarded as one of the great places to watch basketball in all of Michigan. UDM’s on-campus facility celebrated its 60th anniversary of service to the Titans in 2012.

After a five-year stretch of playing in Downtown Detroit’s Cobo Arena, the Titans returned games to campus in 1993-94, a move which coincided with major exterior renovations and a rededication of Calihan Hall in September of 1993. A newly-painted playing floor, featuring the new Titans logo, was unveiled for the 2008-09 season. Several of the building’s locker rooms were remodeled in 1998. A major interior renovation project began one year later and has continued since. New retractable bleachers were installed in the arena’s lower bowl in 2002, and further renovations and improvements — including the Willie Green men’s basketball locker room, strength & conditioning area and softball offices — have taken place within the last five years.

Calihan Hall houses the Titan Athletic offices, varsity locker rooms, sports medicine facilities, the Thelma Fox Murray running track, the Wayne Wheeler Golf Practice Center and the Larry Bleach Fitness Center. It also serves as the basketball practice facility for the Titans all year.

The Titan women’s basketball team uses the arena for all of its home contests. UDM hosted both the 2000 MCC Women’s Basketball Tournament and 2013 WBI Women's Basketball Tournament in Calihan Hall as well. The arena also continues to serve as the host site for numerous games involving the Detroit Public School League, Catholic League and the Michigan High School Boys State Tournament. Additionally, a large number of campus events are staged in Calihan Hall.

The dedication of the University’s Memorial Building, as it was known back then, took place May 25, 1952. The first basketball game was played Dec. 2 of that year when Detroit beat Kalamazoo, 75-61.

In 1977, the 8,295-seat facility’s name was changed to Calihan Hall in honor of the Titans’ first basketball All-American, the late Bob Calihan. Following graduation in 1940 and a professional career in the National Basketball

League — with stops in Detroit, Chicago and Rochester — Calihan returned to the university in 1948 as the Titans’ head coach. In 21 years at the helm, he compiled a 306-237 record, guiding his 1962 team to the NCAA Tournament and three others into the NIT. He also served 13 years as Detroit’s athletic director, retiring in 1977.

In a memorable shoot-out the night of Feb. 22, 1988, Bradley All-American guard Hersey Hawkins established the arena scoring record of 63 points in a 122-107 victory. Guard Archie Tullos broke the all-time Titans scoring record with 49 points in that same game.

During the 2001-02 season, Detroit extended the nation’s longest homecourt winning streak to a remarkable school record of 39 games before falling to UW-Green Bay, 65-61, on Feb. 11, 2002.

During the 62 years since the opening of Calihan Hall, the Titans have enjoyed a 584-234 (.713) homecourt record, including a 56-22 (.717) mark under coach McCallum over the last five years.

913 Postseason Appearances - 2012 Horizon League Champions

Entering his seventh season at the University of Detroit Mercy, head coach Ray McCallum has rebuilt the Titans from the bottom of the Horizon League when he took over to Horizon League champions and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2012.

During his first five years at the helm at Detroit, the Titans increased their conference win total in every season (2, 9, 10, 11, 12). Detroit also increased its place in the regular season

standings during that stretch under McCallum (10th, 7th, T5th, T3rd, 2nd).

The Titans are coming off a 13-19 campaign last year in which they held the lead in 31 of the 32 games, including a second half lead in 12 of their 19 losses. Detroit also continued to expand its brand awareness by setting a new school-high of having 24 games televised, including 14 on the ESPN Networks. Four of the games on ESPN Networks came over a four-week stretch in which the Titans were featured on four-straight Friday nights on ESPNU.

In 2013, the Titans made the NIT for the seventh time in school history after finishing second in the Horizon League.

Detroit finished the year 20-13 overall, its third 20-win season in the past four years.

The 20-win campaign was also the fifth 20-win slate in head coach Ray McCallum’s career (2 Ball State, 3 Detroit).

Detroit was featured 19 times on television, including a school-record 16 times on the ESPN Networks. That national audience was able to witness a number of terrific performances

and players, led by All-American guard Ray McCallum, who was selected 36th overall in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings, along with All-Horizon League First Teamer Nick Minnerath and 2013 Denny's Slam Dunk Champion Doug Anderson.

In 2012, the Titans posted 22 wins – tied for the sixth most in school history – as Detroit went on the road and won three games in the Horizon League Championship, including defeating seconded-seeded Cleveland State and top-seeded Valparaiso on the Crusaders’ home court. UDM would then earn a No. 15 seed in the NCAA Tournament, taking on national runner-up Kansas.

Coach McCallum guided the biggest turnaround in school history and the fourth best turnaround in

the nation in 2010 as the Titans went from 7-23 in his first season to 20-14 in his second year.

Detroit was featured 15 times on television, including nine times on the ESPN Family of Networks. The Titans were again led by All-Horizon League First Team and Horizon League Championship MVP McCallum. The NBCA also recognized him on its All-District First Team, while he was also a Preseason John Wooden Award Top 50 selection and a Bob Cousy Award Final 20 honoree.

Eli Holman was named the HL’s Sixth Man of the Year and to the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Defensive All-America team, while Chase Simon ended his career with 1,386 points, 17th in Titan history. LaMarcus Lowe turned away 157 shots in his Titan career – third in school history – and high-flying guard Doug Anderson was a daily highlight reel and earned the No. 1 dunk on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top Plays with his throw down in the Horizon League Championship Quarterfinals victory over Loyola.

Even more impressive is his work off the court which earned him a Distinguished Service Honoree by the Michigan Youth Appreciation Foundation in July of 2012.

The energetic and charismatic McCallum – a well-known veteran of more than two decades in college basketball – is absolutely driven to restore the Titans to prominence. Since arriving in Detroit, McCallum's teams have already marked achievements not seen since the NCAA tourney teams of the late-1990s and early-2000s. A target is firmly aimed at returning

Titan basketball to the heyday of the 1970s when Calihan Hall was "the" place to be.

“UDM has a great basketball tradition and I’m glad to be part of the next chapter,” coach McCallum said upon his hiring. “I recruited in the area throughout my coaching career and I know the passion for basketball Detroit fans do possess."

McCallum inherited a team that had seven wins the season prior to his arrival. In his second season at UDM, McCallum directed the best turnaround in school history leading the Titans to a 20-14 record and a berth in the Horizon League championship semifinals. The 20 victories marked a 13-win improvement from his first season and represented Detroit’s first 20-win campaign since 2001. The 13-win turnaround was also the fourth-best in the nation.

For his efforts, the Titan head man was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year by CollegeInsider.com.

How to build on that second-year success? Playing a 2010-11 schedule that included the likes of New Mexico, Syracuse and Mississippi State in addition to the always-rugged HL slate and two-time national finalist Butler to prep his team for the rigors of tournament play. Media and professional basketball scouts would take notice as McCallum's track record of preparing next-level-ready players has already produced 10 NBA'ers in his coaching career, with more sure to follow.

McCallum's Titans played in front of a televised audience 13 times in 2010-11 and generated loads of national attention. Early in the season, his athletic squad threw a scare into national-power Syracuse, leading the Orange at the half and setting the tone for a campaign that saw Detroit refuse to back down, shrugging-off much more experienced teams and hostile environments.

Detroit would host a HL opening round tournament game for the first time in five seasons, dispatching Loyola with ease (90-69) to head to the quarterfinals. Postseason accolades were plentiful with son Ray McCallum earning the HL Newcomer of the Year and junior Eli Holman grabbing a spot on the league's all-defensive squad. The pair were also listed on the All-HL Second Team. CollegeInsider.com also praised the Detroit duo as McCallum was named to the freshman All-America team

Coach McCallum was honored with the 2010 Men of Excellence award by the Michigan Chronicle for the team’s

outstanding season and his many service projects within the Detroit community.

and Holman was an honoree on the Mid-Major Defensive All-America team.

McCallum's 2011 squad topped the HL in scoring (74.5 ppg), rebounding (37.5 rpg) and blocked shots (5.0 bpg) and was second in field goal percentage (.464) and steals (7.6 spg).

Despite not having a senior, McCallum still managed to bring aboard more talent with the signing of highly-touted Doug Anderson. Anderson-- an explosive dunker and gifted athlete-- spent two seasons at Mott Community College leading the Bears to a pair of state titles and a national runner-up finish in 2010.

Twelve of McCallum's 17 seasons as a head coach have charted at least 16 wins. He picked-up career win No. 200 with a 71-62 win over Bowling Green during the Legends Classic held at Calihan Hall, Nov. 27, 2010.

Coach McCallum was honored in June of 2010 with the 2010 Men of Excellence award by the Michigan Chronicle for the team’s outstanding season and his many service projects within the Detroit community.

The award is presented by the acclaimed Detroit-based newspaper to local African-American men who motivate and inspire others through their vision and leadership, exceptional achievements and participation in community service. The honorees chosen represent a diverse group of men who have demonstrated success within their profession or industry and are positive role models whose contributions encourage others. Additionally, the Men of Excellence are committed to a personal code of ethics that demands ownership, responsibility and integrity. They are men who exercise discipline, demonstrate personal conviction and courage. These men are public and private figures who are leaders, motivators, educators, entrepreneurs, corporate executives, civil servants and private citizens.

When hired at Detroit, McCallum brought 11 years of head coaching experience with him to UDM, having previously served in that role at his alma mater, Ball State (1994-2000), as well as Houston (2001-04). He took four teams to postseason play during his career at those schools.

Quite simply, he brought a winner’s touch with him to all of the stops he has made in his 29-year coaching career, which

began at Ball State in 1983-84 as a volunteer assistant coach. He served as an assistant at Wisconsin for the next nine seasons, helping a program that hadn’t been to post-season play since 1947 to NIT berths in 1989, 1991 and 1993. He had a brief stint as an assistant at Michigan, before quickly returning to Ball State to make his head coaching debut during the 1993-94 season.

The Cardinals posted a 126-76 record during McCallum’s seven-year tenure. McCallum directed Ball State to two NCAA Tournament appearances (1995, 2000) and an NIT berth (1998) and became the first coach in Ball State history to post seven consecutive winning seasons. During his head coaching career at Ball State, McCallum recruited and coached Bonzi Wells, who was the 11th pick of the 1998 NBA Draft. When he left BSU for Houston in 2000, McCallum’s .624 winning percentage was the fourth-best in Mid American Conference history.

McCallum served as head coach at Houston for four seasons.

“Ray McCallum was a great hire for Detroit. He’s an experienced coach who will do great things with the Titans, baby.”

In 2002, he led the Cougars to an 18-15 mark and a berth in the NIT, Houston’s first post-season tournament appearance in nine years. Houston finished 9-7 in Conference USA’s National Division that year, and advanced to the league tournament semi-finals for the first time. During his stay in Houston, he played an integral role in the development of Andre Owens, who spent three years in the pros and is one of 10 NBA players McCallum has coached during their college careers.

Before arriving at Detroit, McCallum had been a key assistant on the coaching staffs at Oklahoma (2004-06) and Indiana (2006-08), and was a part of four straight trips to the NCAA Tournament with those teams. Recruiting classes at both schools, while McCallum was on their staffs, ranked among the Top 5 in the nation. Oklahoma won its first-ever Big 12 Conference Championship in 2005 while McCallum was a part of the Sooners staff. Among the coach’s protégés at Indiana was a pair of 2008 Associated Press All-Americans, D.J. White and Eric Gordon, who have since moved on to the NBA as first-round draft picks.

An outstanding player in his own right, McCallum was a member of two state championship teams at Central High School in Muncie, Ind. As a senior in 1979, he was a starting guard and was named the Most Valuable Player of the state championship game after leading Central to its second straight state title.

He stayed in Muncie to play collegiately at Ball State, where he was named the MAC’s Freshman of the Year after leading the Cardinals in scoring with 16.5 points per game. As a sophomore, McCallum again led the Cardinals in scoring, this time with 18.4 points per game, and helped them finish the season with a 20-10 record and a share of the MAC championship. Ball State also earned an NCAA Tournament invitation for the first time in school history that year. The following season, McCallum led the Cardinals in scoring once again with a 17.6 average, and Ball State won its first outright MAC Championship.

As a senior, McCallum was named MAC Player of the Year and conference tournament MVP. He also earned first-team All-MAC honors for the third straight year, ending his career as the MAC’s all-time leading scorer with 2,109 points. Additionally, he won the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award as the nation’s best senior under six-feet tall. He became the first BSU athlete to have his jersey retired in any sport. McCallum graduated from Ball State in 1983 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Technology.

One week after graduation, the Indiana Pacers selected him in the 1983 NBA Draft. One of the final players cut in training camp, McCallum played briefly in the CBA before returning to Ball State to begin his coaching career.

McCallum and his wife, Wendy, are the parents of a daughter, Brittany Rae (24) and son Ray Michael (22), who was selected 36th overall in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings.
