Nobles and Friends —Then there was the Ball—Back To

The Beach. What a great event forZuhrah! Friday night saw hundreds ofZuhrah Nobles, wives and friendsparting around the DoubleTreeGarden Court wearing summer beachattire. It gave me a warm feeling justlike I was back at the beach. Somepeople got very creative with theirbeach attire. Congratulations to BillYungk and Ronda Anderson for beingvoted for having the best costumewith “Weekend at Bozo Jr’s.” It wasnice to see that Bozo Jr.made it to theball. Minnesota Valley Shrine Club wasvoted the best decorated room.A bigcongratulations goes out to them andall of the Unit and Club Hospitalityrooms. They looked great and it wasnice to have the Daughters of the Nilejoin us with a hospitality room thisyear, too.A big thank you to them.

At the Ball on Saturday morning, wehad a great Seminar for our Unit andClub Heads, informing them on theoperations of Zuhrah. I appreciate thetime that our nobles took to put onand attend the seminar. If you didn’tmake the seminar, contact Verl Raapfor the information.

Saturday afternoon our Ceremonialteam and Ceremonial Masters put onan excellent Ceremonial. Twelve newnobles crossed the hot sands thatafternoon. Congratulations to them.New Nobles, please get involved andfind a unit to join.

Saturday night found us dressed inour finest. The Unit and Club Headslooked great during the GrandMarch, passing through the LostIsland Tiki Hut, built by Mark“Spanky” Coleman. We then danceduntil one a.m. to the music of MichaelRiddle and Friends. They are a greatband and the music wasenjoyed by all.The Pipesand Drums did a lit-tle late, late nighte n t e r t a i n i n g .Thanks to themfor letting me getsome sleep thatnight. We did havea couple of inci-dents with peoplegetting a little out ofhand; remember, Nobles, that we represent the Craft andmust always be on our best behavior.

A couple of weeks after the Ball,thirty-two of our Zuhrah friendsenjoyed a week cruising on the RoyalCaribbean “Harmony of the Seas.”

What a ship! It is one of the largestcruise ships in the world.Fun was hadby all, and I now look forward to thewarmer Minnesota weather ahead.

The Friday night Oasis is becominga huge event. We play Bunco at leastonce a month. It’s fun and easy toplay. For $5 and an appetizer, you canhave a fun, inexpensive night. Thankyou to Heather Mewhinney for run-ning the event. My Lady Linda’s proj-ect “Toys for the Shrine Hospital” isreceiving half of the entry fee, so thefund is growing. The next Bunco nightis April 27th, so come on down tothe Oasis.

The Funsters hosted the annualEaster Egg Hunt at Zuhrah again onMarch 31.They did a great job as usualand the kids all went away happy. It is agreat feeling to see the Shrine Centerfull with families having a great time. Thanks to the Funsters, the Guardiansand 101 for helping.

Trea$ury Note$Greetings, Nobles and interestedreaders.

The Treasurer Report for the monthof February is like a good news badnews. The bad news is that we did notgenerate the income that was budgeted. We budgeted to receive $26,335.00 andonly generated $16, 812.00. The majordifference was that we did not receivethe amount of dues that was plannedfor. The good news is that our expenseswere $6,176.00 versus the budgeted$22,008.00. The expenses were off-setby incomes of $4,202.00 from the insur-ance reimbursement from the units andclubs insurance, $850 from the Unitsand Heads group for the Potentate’s cal-endar and postage expenses and thePotentate’s Ball expenses that have notbeen submitted yet.

Next month we should have the Ballexpenses completed and a surprise of

Hello! For the past fourteen years I have

worked with the llama show at theMinnesota State Fair. How employmentworks at the State Fair is that all season-al and fair time employees are hired justfor that time period, so it does not mat-ter how long you have worked there, you fill out an application every year.Like many applications, it asked forpast/current employment and main jobduties performed. The day I filled outthe paperwork for the 2018 fair I shov-eled, cleaned the bathrooms, cut checks, helped a couple people make dues pay-ments on-line,ordered beer, filed paper-work, and other various items. I wasn’treally sure how to fill out the form, butI was reminded that I will never get intoa rut here. Can you believe people askme if I get bored? Thanks to you all foralways keeping my days interesting!

While getting ready for the fair andother summer activities, I was lookingat the calendar and figuring out when Iwould not be in the office for the nextfew months. The first day coming up isFriday, April 27th. I mention thisbecause I will always do my best to leteveryone know when I won’t be in, butI also want to remind everyone that ifI have the day off, the building willmore than likely be locked. I alwayssuggest that if you are going to stop in(and I always love the company!) youshould call first. I’d hate to havestepped out to run to the bank, or hadcalled in sick and people drive hereand can’t get into the building.

Thank you all!Jennifer

some last year’s circus expenses thathave recently arrived. We ended themonth with receiving $10,636.00 ver-sus the projected $4,327.00. Nextmonth will probably show a differentresult with the Potentate’s Ball and theunexpected Circus expenses.

Unit Club Financial reports are stilllagging. I have received reports from 19Units and Clubs. There are still 23 Unitsand Clubs that haven’t sent in theirreports.

Nobles, we have some fundraiserfunctions that we need your supportfor. The Onion and Flower sales are inprocess as well as the support of theOasis. Remember that the Oasis isopen every Friday, and we look for-ward to seeing you there.

Thank You.Frank Namestek 2018 Zuhrah Treasurer

TOYS are always in short supply at the Shriners Hospitals for Children – Twin Cites. I wouldlike to have Zuhrah collect TOYS or money for TOYS to help fill the shelves at the ShrinersHospitals for Children – Twin Cities during 2018.TOYS are given out after a child’s appointment. The cabinet space in each department is limited, so smaller TOYS are best. However, they do havea supply of larger TOYS that are used for special occasions, like birthdays, having surgery, gettinga new prosthesis and sometimes when a child is having a hard day.

Money always works also,so they can buy what they need.Cash or checks can be turned into Zuhrahor sent to Linda Metzger at 5510 Sycamore Lane N, Plymouth, MN, 55442. Checks must be madepayable to Women’s General Auxiliary 4 Kids (WGA4Kids); please note “TOYS” on the memo line.

ZUHRAH SHRINERS

Hello, Nobles,I hope everyone survived April Fools’

Day unscathed. I would guess there arerelatives and friends out there who lovepractical jokes and yearn for April 1stto come around. The one thing I havelearned, never pull a practical joke onsomeone who knows Karate!

I just wanted to let everyone knowthat Zuhrah’s Closet is going strong andwe keep taking in new items. At theMarch Stated Meeting I turned in $25that was donated the previous month. This money was donated to Lady Linda’sprogram TOYS for Shriners Hospitals forChildren. This is a program administeredby the Woman’s General Auxiliary. Theywill accept new toys or cash/check dona-tions so they can buy toys for the kids inthe Hospital. All of the monies collectedthrough Zuhrah’s Closet will go directlyto the program. If you wish to write a

check for aZuhrah’s Closetitem please make itout to WGA4Kids;please note “TOYS” on the memo line.

Zuhrah’s Closet is a program to col-lect Zuhrah logoed clothing or Shrinebling: pins, buttons, tie clips, rings, cufflinks, shirt button covers, items like that. The items are then placed on a coatrack at the ZSC and are on display forall Nobles to browse and purchase. There is a suggested donation price liston the clothes rack. This is only a sug-gested donation, feel free to leave more??.We have been receiving new items allthe time so please check back for newadditions.

Thank you for your support of theTOYS for Shriners Hospitals for Children, either by donations or purchases.

ZUHRAH SHRINERS – UNITS

Greetings Nobles, Ladies and Friends,For those who went on the

Potentate’s cruise, welcome home! TheSteel Drum Band, along with the otherparade units, is gearing up for anothersuccessful parade season. We alreadyhave been invited back to several paradesand looking into some new ones.

The monthly business meetings arewell attended and this is greatly appreci-ated by your officers. If any members arein need of uniform slacks, yellow shirt, bolo tie or hat, please contact Mark Kipp.

One topic we continue to discuss isrecruiting new members. If you are read-ing this and are not a member of aparade unit we invite you to considerjoining the Steel Drum Band. We willencourage you to learn to play the steeldrums; however, it is a fact that somesimply are not musically inclined. Inthose cases we will encourage them toplay other percussive instruments suchas the tambourine, maracas, claves, gourd, triangle, shaker or bongos. Wealso have other support roles like drivingthe van. For nobles who are interestedin joining a performing group, you do nothave to look far to find one that is inter-esting, fun and so much appreciated bycheering parade crowds. We will teachyou very quickly and painlessly. We havepractice on Saturday mornings and amonthly business meeting the 1stTuesday of each month at 7 p.m. All ofthis takes place at the Plymouth MasonicLodge in Crystal. If you should need aride, I am sure we can arrange that aswell. Contact info is listed below. TheBand travels to and from the parades inan air conditioned van and performs ona beautiful float much to the delight ofadoring crowds. With the enthusiasticcrowds and the camaraderie of your fel-low nobles, there isn’t much more youcould ask for. Give us a try, you’ll like it.

If you are on Facebook, please checkout our page. Just search for ZuhrahSteel Drum Band. We will be postingsome videos, photos and our paradeschedule on it.

The Sunshine Committee also reportsseveral members continue to undergovarious treatments. We are keeping thefollowing in our thoughts and prayers,Cookie Burlingame, Jim Burlingame, Sr.PP, Grumpy Garton, Peg and LarryHorwedel, Dee Johnson,Tom Lind,TomMacLeod,Marilyn Powers, Sunny Reinersand Adrian Skytland, PP.

Birthday wishes go out to ladies SandySegal (19) and Nobles Dave Hanson (21)and Mark Kipp (22).Anniversary congrat-ulations go out to Peg and LarryHorwedel (12) and Audrey and KeithBraiedy (27)

To continue the series on the ques-tions the Band receives at parades:

Q: What types of drums do youplay? Or Why are they so many differ-ent drums?

A: Just like there are different instru-ments in an orchestra or sections in achoir, there are different types of steeldrums.

Some play the LEAD drums whichplay the melody of the song and couldbe considered the soprano of ‘ourchoir.’ These are single drums and have29 different notes on them

Others play DOUBLE SECONDSwhich are two drums which have 28 dif-ferent notes. The Seconds play the song’sharmony and would be the altos in ‘ourchoir.’

We also have TRIPLE CELLOS whichlike their name indicates are 3 drumseach with 8 different notes on them.TheTriples play the low chords and rhythm. The Triples would be our Tenors.

Finally we have the TENOR BASSdrums. These are the four 55 gallondrums in the back of the float. Each ofthese drums have five notes on them. The Tenor Bass would be the baritone inour vocal quartet.

The Zuhrah Steel Drum Band alsohas some other percussion instru-ments such as the bongo drums, theconga drums and the claves.

In closing, here is a quote from WBGeorge Washington in a letter toBrother Benedict Arnold from 1775:“While we are contending for our own liberty, we should be very cautious not to violate the rights of conscience in others, ever considering that God alone is the judgeof the hearts of men, and to him only in this case they are answerable.”

Hello Guns and Hoses,April is upon us and we have already

sprung ahead one hour. I know it is on TVand radio to check your batteries insmoke detectors and CO detectors. Iwould recommend not just testing thembut put in a new battery; it is very cheapinsurance. If your house, ice fishing shackor cabin does not have detectors in themplease buy a couple and put them up.Place the smoke detector up highbecause smoke is warm and rises in aroom. Put your CO detectors both highand low because CO tends to be morestable and could be high or low depend-ing on where the leak is and air currentsin the room.A great rule to follow is toread and follow the manufactures direc-tions.Also most detectors only last fiveor six years. They still will chirp when youpress the test button but that does nottest the CO sensor, just the battery. Bestto just buy a new detector and install it.

For Zuhrah’s May Stated meeting Ihave a short video lined up to showthe nobles. It is to bring attention andawareness to Law Enforcement week.

Our next Guns and Hoses Statedmeeting is this April 30th at KipsAuthentic Irish Pub in the MinneapolisMarriott West just off 394 and HWY169. We will meet for dinner first at1800, then start the meeting at 1900. Ifyou are thinking of joining Guns andHoses, please come to the meeting andwe can fill you in over a great dinner anda quick meeting, I promise!! The biggestthing we need to do is vote in a ProvostMarshal. I have the badge all ready, evencustomized it for us.

Hello, Rod and Gunners,Here we are another month closer

to soft water fishing. I would guess manyhave May 12th circled on the calendar. As the weather gets warmer and icefishing houses get put away, the focusturns to getting the boat ready for thewater. For the rest of us non-boat own-ers, there is always a buddy around thecorner with a nice boat who is willing totake a friend fishing. After all, isn’t itmore fun to fish with someone?

April brings some fun events. The firstone is Grand Lodge on the 13th and14th.Then Friday.April 20th.Zuhrah willhost a Stated meeting along with aCeremonial. It would be nice to see alot of Rod and Gunners in our Clubshirts passing out brochures and shakinghands of new Nobles.

We still have pheasants and wild riceto sell. I know it has been a long fundrais-er but there is a little more work to doto earn money to bring the Hospital kidsfishing in June and July.We mustn’t forgetthe goal at the end of selling, the manysmiles of some pretty cool kids!

Also the spring Dave Vice MemorialSporting Clays shoot is May 5th.We arein the process of selling raffle tickets andstation sponsors to help raise money forthe Shriners Hospital. Bill Vice is incharge of passing out the raffle ticketsand registration for the shoot. If youneed tickets to sell to friends and familymembers, Bill can get you set up. Thetickets are only $5 each or a book of 5for only $20.There are ten firearms onthe raffle or a cash alternative for thosethat are not interested in the firearm.

Our next meeting is April 11th at7:00 p.m. at the Osseo/Maple GroveAmerican Legion in Osseo. Dinnerbefore hand at 6:00 if you are interest-ed. I will bring the new Provost Marshalbadge and we can vote on our requiredProvost Marshal.

Greetings, Zuhrah Nobles,The Potentate’s Ball was a great time.

Illustrious Sir Jim Burlingame and hisLady Linda definitely know how to throwa party. “Back to the Beach” was a funtheme and the Legion of Honor went allout. Having the theme announced a fullyear out did make it easier. We went witha Scuba Shop! Noble Jeff Agan is a MasterDiver and Instructor, so it made it veryrealistic. We had a lot of good feedbackon your efforts. We even had our ownreal Mermaid who got around to all unitsand danced till the end of the night. It wasnot a good, but great time. Thanks to myLady Shannon and Jeff’s Lady Jen! Onlything is we need to get better banquetfood for the buck, really. Over all, all hada good, no, great time.

By the time we read this, the Legion ofHonor, will have the first Parade for 2018under its belt. We will be doing the St.Patrick’s Day Parade in Crosslake

Minnesota.Yes, it will be early and yes, itwill be chilly, but it is a great parade!Currently we have fifteen parades thatare on our calendar. Many we know arein, some we have worked with, but youknow how it is, their committee has tocontact our committee and yadda yadda. They somehow magically come together.Actually with some hard work for PastCommander, current Adjutant Jeff Agan.

In our February meeting we broughtBrother Noble Jerry Cleveland into ourgreat unit and voted on two more.Wealso had a first reading, with talk of twomore petitions coming in.Yes, it is timeto grow. With some additions, I am hop-ing to get Legion of Honor with the Flagand Rifles in front of the truck at asmany parades as possible.

April 22nd is our Spring OmeletChampagne Breakfast. We are alsoadding to the menu, Biscuits and gravy!ATTENTION we are MOVING theVENUE! The new location will be

Mpls/Richfield American Legion6501 Portland Ave SoRichfield, Mn 55423They will be opening the bar no later

than 10:00 a.m. and are doing much tohelp us with our changes. Lots of easyaccess parking and Centrally located.Talk to any Legion member you knowor tickets will be available at the door. Ifyou have questions contact me,WB Phil

Carlson Commander 2018. 952-334-3350 [email protected] to allLegion members, we need all the helpwe can get or just come down andbring family to have an omelet, thatworks too.

We will be looking to do our meet-ings at the Shrine Center again by May.With the weather turning nice and thepatio in, I am hoping to use the grilland get some super meals going. Somewill absolutely be a family affair.

We are talking MSA in August. Ifaffordable, many of us will go. If we can,we will also bring Jeeps and do theParade, too.

ZUHRAH SHRINERS – UNITS

Greetings from the ZuhrahHorse Patrol: 58

Love wasn’t the only thing in the airon Valentine’s Day.There were storiesand a hint of horse manure, too.

First the stories...‘Uncles’ Bill Leadens and Dick Rindal

are constant sources of stories and thehistory of the Horse Patrol. Especiallyduring the winter, it’s nice to sit downbeside the fire in the clubhouse and lis-ten to them talk about days gone by.

It was the Potentate’s Ball that got ustalking one day.The theme of ‘Back to theBeach’ got me to thinking about what Billdid during World War 2. I knew he hadserved with the Marine Corp during theWar as part of the Greatest Generationbut did not know exactly where. Forthose of you not familiar with the historyof the Marine Corp during World War 2,those brave Marines spent a lot of time(probably too much time, if you could askone of them) on beaches all over theSouth Pacific ending the reign of terror ofthe Fascist Japanese Empire.

My inquiry got Bill to telling a story ofa friendship which was woven throughover 40 years of his life. I will try to doit justice...

As a young man, Bill found himself onParris Island preparing with his unit todo their part. While in training, Bill’sappendix burst and he needed an emer-gency appendectomy. Of course, therewere no doctors on-hand so they hadto have the Navy medic take it outbefore anymore damage was done. Bill’sabdomen became infected and he wasplaced in a Navy hospital. The infectionwas quite severe (it prevented Bill frombeing sent overseas) and he spent a lotof time in the hospital.

While in the hospital, the guy in thebed across the aisle befriended Bill andlooked out for him because he was sosick. This ‘Tony’ made sure Bill was doingOK. As it turned out, they were bothfrom Minnesota and when it came timeto be shipped home,Tony took care of Billon the train to make sure he got home allright. When they came home, they got offthe train and went their separate ways.

Fast forwarding 15 to 20 years(either the late 50s or early 60s), wefind our friend Bill Leadens walking thebeat serving with the MinneapolisPolice. He remembers that outsideone local business downtown, a drycleaners, that he could ‘tag’ (ticket) a

car almost every day for a parking vio-lation: same car, different violation, everyday. As Bill put it,‘I tagged the helloutta that car.’ This went on for a longperiod of time. Probably we are stillriding on some of the streets paved byBill’s service in tagging that car.

One day, the owner of that car final-ly saw Bill ticketing his car. “Hey, heyyou. Are you the one giving me all thetickets?” he yelled from across thestreet.

As he approached Bill, he continued,“Hey...hey, I know your face. I know you.”

“Yeah, I’ve been writing you ticketsfor a while now.”

“No, no, you and I served in theMarines together.”

It was then that Bill realized he hadbeen ticketing his old friend Tony thewhole time. They both had a long laugh.Bill and Tony became re-acquainted andremained friends while Tony continuedto run that dry cleaning business.

Fast forward to 1986 and our BillLeadens is now a newly minted ZuhrahShrine Horseman and is attending one ofhis first Zuhrah functions. Who did hesee? That’s right, his Marine brother, hisfriend and Past Potentate and fellowHorseman Tony Zahos.

Now the Manure…As we may recall, Valentine’s Day

was particularly warm, 30 to 40degrees. This meant we had perfectweather for a trail ride: beautiful sun-light, almost no breeze, ‘warm’ andnice melty snow for traction. Therewere a lot of riders out in the after-noon. All were able to get a nice ridein before helping to load up the wag-ons with all of supplies for our roomat the Potentate’s Ball. Thanks toWendy, Chris, Chuck, Tiffany, Donal, and Brad for helping to pack every-thing up. (PS: the aforementionedTrumpeter Swans apparently spendtime out on the lake.)

We all had a great time at the Pote’sBall and were honored to win the covet-ed Cully’s Column award for the secondtime in our history. Once again, theHorsemen’s room seemed to be the (or a)place to be late into the night on Friday.Rumor has it that things were still rollingwell after 2 a.m. when ‘mom’ told all thekids to go to bed.

At the February Stated Meeting(delayed due to Larry Messerli’s roman-ticism) we voted on and accepted theinfamous Scott Hughes into the HorsePatrol.Welcome aboard, Scott, we lookforward to seeing and riding with you!We also discussed adding ropes or lari-ats to our parade tack. I assume (and Iwill admit I was not paying completeattention because I was trying to deci-pher the pricing model for the flowersale) these lariats are ostensibly torestrain Larry. My thought: this is a start

but we probably want some duct tape tosilence him too. Just a thought. CaptainGretton covered our parading and prac-ticing plans for the season and outlined atwo-year plan to get us ready for theInternational in Nashville.

Community OutreachAs part of our 2018 initiative to re-

invest in community outreach, we wel-comed the Orono-Westonka U10Bteam to the barn on 2/25 for pizza, horseback rides in the indoor arena, anda crash course on the Shriners andShriners Hospitals for Children. Therewere 30 children at the barn that dayand they had a wonderful time. Thankyou to Rob and Jen Stewart, DennisMyron, Susann and Ben Dye, Art Hart,Scott and Katie Udell, Jeanie, and Pattyand Rob Mason for making it all possible.

Cowboy BreakfastThe March Cowboy Breakfast start-

ed out rocky:we had apparently double-booked the ranch for Andrew Arashiba’schild’s birthday party at the same time.Fortunately, we were able to make it upto the birthday party group by providingfree food and rides to the kids to makeup for the inconvenience of having toshare the barn and clubhouse with us.

As for the breakfast itself. It was a suc-cess once again. This was in large partdue to the efforts of Chris Mullin, BradRandall,Art Hart and John Mac. Not tomention Chris Pounder and DennisMyron ensuring the rides were goinggreat. We also tested out letting kids eatfor Free. It worked.

Oh, and Andrew Arashiba pitched inby helping as a Loader to get kids onhorses. On his first official visit to thebarn as a Horseman, Scott Hughesimmediately pitched in and got to workin the kitchen. Great job to all. Thanksalso to Wendy (bartender), BradRoberts (cashier),Larry Messerli (maitred’/social butterfly), Phil Smith and ScottUdell (servers), and Ben Dye (cleanup).Apologies to those I am unknowinglyomitting.

UpcomingDrill practice will be starting up here

shortly, either in the indoor arena orthe outdoor. Also, don’t forget that ArtHart’s Steakhouse crew is at the barnevery 2nd Wednesday of the month tocook up steaks for one and all. Drop usa line so we know you’re coming sowe’ll have a steak for ya’.

Hello, everyone! You might be wondering why the

President of Zuhrah Antique Cars iswriting this month’s MotorHeads article. The answer involves some great news.

When reading last month’s Arabianand seeing that the MotorHeads weregoing to disband, the ZAC felt that doingso would leave a big hole in our units. The motorcycling community is largeand diverse, and there needs to be aplace in Zuhrah and Shrinedom forthem.Additionally many ZAC membersown motorcycles while most of theMotorHeads own classic cars.

Thus I am pleased to announce thatthe Zuhrah MotorHeads will live on as apart of the Zuhrah Antique Cars unit. After discussion and meetings both unitsfelt that we were a great fit together andhave agreed to a merger of the units.TheMotorHeads will be an semi-autonomous unit within the ZAC—theywill be members of both ZAC and theMotorHeads.

This is a fantastic opportunity forboth of us to share and to grow. I couldnot be more happy.

To our newest ZAC brothers, wel-come.Thank you for your confidence inus.We are delighted that you are with us!

ZUHRAH SHRINERS – CLUBS

WELCOME TO THE VALLEY—WE ARE LOCATED AT THE CORNEROF SUNSHINE and FRATERNAL WARMTH.

MVSC is numero uno. At the Potentate’s Ball banquet, MVSC was award-ed the best decorated hospitality room. Our President Kevin Raley accept-ed the trophy from Potentate Jim Burlingame Jr.

Brad Roberts (Ball Chairman), Jim Burlingame (Potentate), Kevin Raley (PresidentMVSC) & Wendy,Tom & Deb Blackwell (Decoration Co-Ordinators), and

Vice President Jerry Cleveland & Missy. We heard many compliments on our hospitality room which was decorated

in the theme of the Ball—Back to the Beach. We heard many nice commentson the large variety of food appetizers supplied by our ladies and also on thefruit carvings by Deb Blackwell. Thank you, Deb, for all your time and effortin our hospitality room. The best compliment we heard several times was thewarm hospitality our guests felt when visiting in our room.

The fun started on Friday evening. Our members who donned costumeswere Tom and Deb Blackwell, Jim and Diane Berg and Jerry Clevelandwho dressed in a lobster costume. Our President Kevin dressed in his favoriteattire—tank top, shorts, and flip flops.

Left: Kevin Raley,Tom Blackwell, and Lobsterman Jerry. Right: Tom and Deb Blackwell

Saturday at the Ball started with Zuhrah units playing poolside in the after-noon. Once again, my heart was warmed by listening to the performance fromthe Drum Corps with whom I paraded for 23 years.

MVSC had twenty-two members and ladies attend the Banquet. During theGrand March, our President Kevin (holding the trophy for best room decoration)and his Lady Wendy were introduced. Following the Grand March there wasdancing poolside. Terry and Banay Fried were voted top dancers from MVSC.

Left: Craig & Sara VanMeter. Above:Wendy, Kevin,Deb,Tom, Jane, Paul, Craig, & Sara.

Greetings, Nobles and Ladies,As I pen this article, we are exactly

one week away from the arrival ofspring, with its warmer weather, longerdays, and opportunities to get out of thehouse to start shedding the extrapounds we put on this winter. And withspring comes… PANCAKES andSAUSAGES! More on that later.

BASC had its first stated meeting sincethe January installation of new officers onMarch 14th at the Bloomington EventCenter with President Royce McEwenpresiding. Joining in the festivities wereVP Sven Borgersen, Secretary RobFendler, Treasurer Phil Bemis, boardmembers Jim Rausenberger, TomO’Hara, Dave Pickit and ScottWagner, Provost Marshal Mark(Wyatt Earp) Olsen, and BASC mem-bers Dave Alstrup,Marlowe Anderson,Brad Ahrens and Al Paulsen. We alsowelcomed Zuhrah Masonic RelationsRep Carl Lindstrom to our meeting, andappreciated his invitation to attend theKnight Commander of the Temple repre-sentation on April 5th at the Scottish RiteTemple.

The stated meeting started out on avery positive note with most of the atten-dees very supportive of the new leader-ship and anxious to hear of the many newinitiatives that BASC will undertake thisyear. However, that came to a screechinghalt when, as I asked for a motion toapprove the agenda, I was interrupted bya loud “NO” by our new BASC ProvostMarshal Wyatt. I immediately poundedmy gavel (well, it’s actually a hammer—more on that later, too) and reprimandedhim for his insolence. One would thinkthat if anyone in our club would under-stand the importance of proper rules andorder, it would be the Marshal – apparent-ly ours needs a little more training. Oncethe motion and second were made forthe approval of the agenda, discussion fol-lowed, during which Marshal Wyatt askedto be added to the agenda so that hewould have time to assess fines. The origi-nal motion was amended, seconded, andpassed (but just barely).

The rest of the meeting was progress-ing quite nicely until we got to the newagenda item asked for by Marshal Wyatt. He took the floor, and, as his usual style, spoke gibberish about unwritten rules andtraditions and other non-sense. Nobleswere fined for showing up late for themeeting, not wearing their fez, not writingreports, etc. One member complainedthat this was worse than any new tax planever legislated in Washington DC.

Then when I was fined for not havingmy gavel – that was the last straw! Truthbe told, there is a mountain of evidenceproving that there is COLLUSION tak-ing place between the BASC ProvostMarshal (Wyatt) and the ZuhrahProvost Marshal (let’s call him MattDillon), as they were both in attendancethe night that the aforementioned gavelwas STOLEN from the newly installedBASC President. Marshal Wyatt was lastseen eyeing the gavel on the dinner tableas I arose to take care of some personal

Special thanks to thoseworked on the set-up, clean-up and teardown and especially to Tom Blackwellwho spent 11 hours building our bam-boo hut for the beach theme. It was afun weekend visiting with our Shrinerfriends in the various hospitality rooms.*****************************

business, and as I came back to the meet-ing Marshal Wyatt was seen handing ashiny wooden object to Marshal Dillon, asboth of them laughed heartily. Not want-ing to make too much of a scene at ourrecent meeting, I gladly paid my fines, butwith a warning that justice will be served.

The remainder of the meeting went alittle smoother, except for every timeMarshal Wyatt had something to say. Itbecame readily apparent that he was notgoing to abide by Robert’s Rules of Orderduring the meeting, so by ExecutiveOrder I declared that Robert’s Ruleswould be immediately replaced byRoyce’s Rules of Order, and that all of mydecisions would be final! That’s whenWyatt’s sidekick in the back of the room,Scott (“Tulip Tycoon”) Wagner, started making some smart-a__ com-ments. I don’t have the time nor the inkto report to you how upset I was withhim, but I am sure that he is also involvedin the COLLUSION with the Marshals.

The meeting adjourned at 8:47 – near-ly 20 minutes past schedule, all becauseof the problems caused by the aforemen-tioned members. I will do my best toensure that all future meetings adjournby 8:30. And I would be remiss not togive a special thank you to the “anony-mous” member who picked up the tabfor everyone’s dinner (although I heard arumor that he was so disgusted withthose two yahoo’s at the back table thathe let them pay for their own meals).
