(Xrystos Naqa Pasxa-194-6)

(Xrystos Naqa Pasxa-197 - prod. nast. b[l.)

The Nativity of Christ

Fulfilling the decree of the Roman Emperor that all

people in the empire be enrolled, Joseph, who was of the line

of David, sets out with Mary to Bethlehem, the home town

of King David, to be recorded in the census rolls. There, in

a cave in Bethlehem of Judea, Mary gave birth to the Child

(see Lk 2:1). Fulfilled are the words of the prophet Micah about

the Messiah, the son of David who shall come forth from

Bethlehem (see Mi 5:2). Obedient to the word spoken by the

angel of the Lord, Joseph names the Child Jesus, which

means God saves , “for he will save his people from their

sins” (Mt1:21). The shepherds come to the newborn Child

(see Lk2:15-18), and Magi from the East also arrive (see Mt2:1-11).

The fact that the magi — representatives of all humanity

— worship Christ, points to the universal character of

salvation. In the Son of God, God the Father offers

salvation to all the nations of the earth.

Creation joyfully welcomes God in the flesh, bearing gifts

for the newborn Child: angels—their song; the heavens

—a star; the magi—gold, frankincense, and myrrh; the

shepherds—their wonder; the earth—a cave; the deserted

place—a manger; humankind — the Virgin Mother. The

mystery of the Nativity, namely God’s entry into human

history, continues to this day: “Today has God come upon

earth, and the human race gone up to heaven.”

In our Church’s tradition, the Eve of the Nativity feast,

also called Holy Eve (in Ukrainian, Sviat vechir), is honoured

with particular solemnity. Every home becomes a Bethlehem

of the family: the table symbolizes the manger; straw is

placed under the tablecloth, and upon the tablecloth are

placed the prosphora (Communion bread), a symbol of the

Child Jesus. A lit candle is placed next to the prosphora

to symbolize the star of Bethlehem. With a meatless supper,

the family gathers around the table to prayerfully honour the

incarnate Son of God. Christmas carols are sung by the

faithful. In hospitality, homes open their doors to everyone

who celebrates the Nativity of Christ. The high point of the

celebration of the Nativity feast is the solemn divine service,

for which all parishioners gather. The Eucharistic Supper at

the Divine Liturgy crowns the family supper. (Christ our Pascha-#194-6)

Theophany

At the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan, the public

ministry of the Saviour begins (see Mt3; Mk1). John the

Baptist points to Christ in the Jordan and identifies Him as the

“Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (Jn1:29).

During the baptism of Jesus, the Most Holy Trinity is made

known: “Worship of the Trinity was revealed; the voice of the

Father bore witness to You, naming you the beloved Son,

and the Spirit in the form of a dove confirmed the word’s

certainty.” “The voice of the Father” is the voice of the

Heavenly Father, and the “Spirit in the form of a dove” is the

Holy Spirit, who descends upon Christ, revealing him to be the

Son of God. For this reason, Church tradition refers to the

Baptism of Jesus Christ as the Theophany (from the Greek,

meaning divine appearance). (Christ our Pascha-#197— Cont. next bulletin)

The Circumcision of Our Lord Jesus Christ, & St. Basil the Great On January 1, 8 days after the Holy Nativity of our Lord, we celebrate His Circumcision, one of the Feasts of the Lord, on which, in accordance with Hebrew tradition, He received the name "Jesus.: "And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the Child, His name was called Jesus, which was so named of the Angel before He was conceived in the womb" (Lk

2:21). The true descendants of the Patriarch Abraham were separated from the other nations by the sign of circumcision (a prefigurement of Baptism: "the circumcision made without hands" [Col 2:11ff]) and thereby became members of the God-ruled community of the Old Testament; that is, through circumcision, they entered among the chosen People of God. Christ was now "made under the law," being conformed to the prescriptions of the Mosaic Law (Gal 4:4) and "fulfilling" the Law (Mt 3:15), in order to elevate the Church of the Law into a Church of Grace, into a new "Israel of God" (Gal 6:16), into His Body. How appropriate it is, then, the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus falls on New Year’s Day, in that our minds at this year’s beginning are focused on Him who will make all things new. Because of this holy child, through the sacrament of Baptism, we become holy: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine” (Isa. 43:1). Through this holy child we are given the gift of everlasting life: “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Jl 2:32). Blessed be the name of the Lord: Jesus, “The Lord saves!” St. Basil was born in Caesarea, Asia Minor, and received his education in Constantinople and Athens where he studied philosophy & the great classical works for & years. There he did very well in his studies and lived as an ascetic. He returned to Caesarea in 355 to teach at the university. He then traveled extensively in Syria and Egypt, where he visited the great hermits in the monasteries of the Eastern and Western Deserts of Egypt. He was deeply influenced by the life of the Egyptian monks and their great devotion to the worship of God. He was attracted to monasticism as a result of his visit to the Egyptian monasteries. He retired for study and contemplation at the bank of the River Iris, in Pontus. There he devoted his life completely to spiritual meditation in solitude until a number of followers gathered around him. As a monk, St. Basil was influenced by St. Pachomius of Egypt who called for combating idleness among monks and advocated a unique reorganization of the monastic order which earned him the title "The Father of Monastic Communities". This inspired St. Basil the monk to build a house for the elderly and the disabled, as well as a hospital adjacent to one of the monasteries at the outskirts of the city of Caesarea. St. Basil later became the founder of an important eastern monastic order, the Basilian Order. St. Basil became Bishop of Caesarea in the year 370 A.D. One of the greatest contributions of St. Basil to the Christian faith was his opposition to Arianism. Arianism was a movement which took place in the first third of the 4th century. Arius, the chief representative of the movement claimed that God, the Father, created Christ in time as His son, similar to Him but not completely equal to Him. In this Arius was attacked and proven totally wrong by a great number of the fathers of the Church. One of those fathers with whom St. Basil collaborated in the fight against Arius was St. Athanasius, Patriarch of Alexandrian who at the Council of Nicaea (A.D. 325) ably defended the doctrine of Christ's Divinity by proclaiming and proving beyond any doubt that Christ existed in eternity as God, and was and is and has always been consubstantial with God the Father in every aspect.

American Red Cross Blood Drive

We always pray before our annual blood drive for it to be a success. The blood drive went smoothly. Results of an early inspection of registered attendees indicated that is was going to be a low turnout. In addition, several regulars who had registered, didn't show up. At completion, we had a total of 29 donors. Chances are that a number of hospital patients prayed for the blood drive. We are grateful for this success. Lastly, we want to sincerely thank all those who came and helped and those who donated.
