The main accused, Babarao Ganeshrao Chavan, ear-lier worked as Post Mas-ter at Nanded in the In-dian Postal Department and was suspended by the department for crim-inal action in 2019. He

had allegedly stolen a blank book of Kisan Vi-kas Patra and Rashtriya Bachat Patra from the post office. lakh. They also tried to get a loan by submitting fake Kisan Vikas Patra and Rashtriya Bachat Patra in several banks and credit unions. Ac-cording to police, they also tried to get loan from HDFC Bank in Panvel by submitting fake documents.

After receiving in-formation about this, on the suggestion of Pan-vel City Police Station Senior Inspector, Ajay Kumar Landage, Assis-tant Inspector of Police Rahul Sonawane, Sub-Inspector of Police Su-nil Tarmale and his team set a trap and arrested the two suspects. When the police conducted a search, they found 2 fake

Kisan Vikas letters and 7 fake National Savings Certificates of the Indian Postal Department. Dur-ing further investigation by the police, the forg-ery was exposed. Police later investigated and arrested two other mem-bers of the gang. Also, 18 fake Kisan Vikas Pa-tras of different denomi-nations of Indian Postal Department, 7 National Savings Certificates as well as 7 rubber stamps and other documents of Indian Postal Depart-ment were seized from them, informed Deputy Commissioner of Police Shivraj Patil. PCMC ALLOwS SCHOOLS TO RESUME CLASSES...

    heb Chimane.Ashfaq Qazi, coor-

dinator of the education department said, “First we will take a declara-tion form from all the parents who are willing to send their children and only after that, the children would be allowed in the schools. Most of the students are from the labour class

and they must have migrated to their home-town. We will have to check and make a new data of all the students who are present in the city. We are sure that the number of students would comparatively be lesser but we will still start the schools for these students. We are expecting around 50 to 60 percent of students to be present in the first two weeks”.

Speaking further, Babasaheb Chimane said, “Each and every room would be sani-tized regularly and all the rules and guidelines given by the state will be followed. We will ensure that there is around 3 metre distance between the teachers and the students. Fre-quent Covid check-up will also be conducted for the teachers. All our teachers were previ-

ously on COVID-19 duty and are eagerly waiting for the classes to begin. We appeal all the parents to let their children come to school as physical classes are always better than online. The primary classes will continue with the online classes. There have been no updates on exams as of now, and we will wait for the state to give us further guidelines.”

Assistant Commis-sioner of Police (ACP) Venkat Andhale, testified during the hearing held on Friday, 22nd January at the Panvel District Sessions Court, that the sus-pended SPI Abhay Ku-rundkar was not on the night patrolling duty on April 11, 2016 when Ashwini Bidre was as-sassinated. Therefore, the diary submitted to the court by Kurundkar was false stating that he was on the night patrol-ling duty. With this statement, the difficulty of Abhay Kurundkar has increased further.

The Panvel Magistrate's Court rejected the bail application of Bhupendra Shah, director of Bhumiraj Group, a builder in Navi Mumbai. Nhava Sheva po-lice had arrested Bhupen-dra Shah in February last year on charges of seizing 80 acres of land belonging to Sir Muhammad Yusuf Trust at Gawan in Navi Mumbai on the basis of a fake farmer's certificate. However, Bhupen-dra Shah was released on interim bail on May 26 in the wake of the Covid 19 pandemic.

On the basis of complaint lodged, the Nhava-Sheva Police in December, 2019 registered a case against Bhupen-dra Shah, Kiran Dand and Mohammad Yusuf Trust chairman Harun Aleem AR Yusuf, Suresh Shedge, Baj Khan, Ramesh Bhalerao and others for forg-ing government documents and loot-

    ing land.After that, Nhava She-

va police investigated the case and arrested Talathi Ramesh Bhalerao and Satish Shirke from Karjat taluka of Raigad. During investiga-tion it was found that Satish Shirke had forged land pur-chase documents at Latur

on the instructions of Talathi Ramesh Bhalerao of Karjat and signed the purchase deed under a false name. Police then arrested Bhupendra Shah in February 2020 in the case. Bhupen-dra Shah, who was remanded in judi-cial custody for about three months, was released on interim bail on May 26 by the court on the background of Covid 19.

Bhupendra Shah then applied to the First Class Magistrate's Court in Pan-vel for bail. After hearing the applica-tion on January 20, the court rejected Bhupendra Shah's bail application.

    Road Safety: A top priority

    Rewriting Fairy Tales

    By Dr. Monica khanna

Stories told to us in childhood are po-tent tools that play a significant role in pro-viding role models that we seek to emulate as we grow older. Being at an impressionable age, our values and ideas of right and wrong, good and evil are defined by characters and events in the stories we are exposed to.

At least three gen-erations have grown up reading fairy tales of Sleeping Beauty, Ra-punzel, Cinderella and Snow White. The com-mon thread that links these stories is the beauti-ful but pas-sive female prot agon is t portrayed as a damsel in dis-tress, whose life becomes complete and meaningf u l only when a handsome Prince Charming res-cues her and sweeps her off a carpet. Sup-pressed by powerful antagonistic forces like witches or evil step-mothers (interest-ingly again, women), the princesses appear weak and incapable of fighting their own battles.

While there have been several reinter-pretations of these tales from a feminist perspective, one of my favourite books in this genre is ‘The Paper Bag Princess’ by Rob-ert Munsch, which is a must read for all boys and girls as it breaks gender stereotypes and presents an interest-ing role reversal. The story revolves around a beautiful princess

Elizabeth, engaged to be married to Prince Ronald. Unfortunately, a dragon destroys her castle and carries away her fiancé. Brave and fearless, she decides to chase the dragon and rescue the prince. She has nothing to wear as everything in the cas-tle is burnt. All she can find is a paper bag that she puts on and march-es to her destination. Using her intellect and presence of mind, she manages to vanquish the dragon. However, when she finds Prince Ronald, she is in for an unpleasant and rude shock. Instead of ac-knowledging her ef-forts and appreciating them, Prince Ronald expresses his disgust

at her dishevelled ap-pearance and mocks her paper bag outfit. “Come back when you are dressed like a real princess,” he repri-mands her. Elizabeth gives him a befitting reply. “Your clothes are really pretty, and your hair is very neat. You look like a real prince, but you are a bum,” she says in a matter-of-fact tone. Unlike other fairy tales that end in the marriage of the prince and princess, this one ends with the line, “They didn’t get married after all.”

The story sends across some very im-portant messages – One, girls do not have to be helpless and weak in the face of crisis. They must in-

stead be pro-active and take action when con-fronted with a difficult situation. Secondly, no problem is insurmount-able, and one can find a solution by thinking out of the box, and us-ing one’s lateral think-ing skills. Third, there is no compromise to self-respect – one must live with dignity, and not at the mercy of a man who is not wor-thy of love. Finally, the book also puts an end to the myth that mar-riage is the ultimate fulfilment, and that all stories must end ‘hap-pily ever after’. The book charms its way to your heart, as does Elizabeth, who risks her life for her fiancé, and yet does not hesi-

tate to leave him when she realizes that he does not deserve her.

As we raise our children in a society that hopes to end the boundaries that divide men and women, one that dreams of being egalitarian, it is time to replace traditional fairy tales with stories like these which chal-lenge gender bias and promote equality and respect in relationships, where domination of the male sex is subtly questioned – stories that can be read three generations later with a smile on the face.

“The work done by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) in the last 25 years is commendable,” said Deputy Commis-sioner of Police (DCP Traffic) Purushottam Karad. He was express-ing his views on the oc-casion of the 25th Silver Jubilee Anniversary of NMMT held at Ghan-soli Depot. The Road Safety Campaign was also launched on the oc-casion. He further said that accident-free Navi Mumbai should be the goal and for that every-one should strictly fol-low the traffic rules.

On this occasion, Re-gional Transport Officer Nandkishore Patil and Umesh Munde, Trans-port Committee Member Raju Shinde, Kashinath Patil, Adv. Abdul Jab-bar Khan, Sameer Bhag-wan, Sudhir Pawar, Ra-jendra Ingle, Transport Manager Shirish Arad-

wad, Chief Accounts and Finance Officer Nilesh Nalawade, Vivek Achalkar, Anil Shinde, Umakant Jungle, Sunil Salunkhe and other dig-nitaries were present.

Shirish Aradwad, while reviewing the last 25 years of the trans-port initiative said that NMMT has been able to achieve this remarkable feat as well as many awards and accolades due to the cooperation and efforts of all the staff, who have worked tirelessly in providing satisfactory passenger service.

Starting from 25 buses in 1996 to 492 buses till date, NMMT has made a remarkable progress. Recognizing the challenges that may lie ahead, Aradwad said, “Emphasis would be to run environmentally friendly buses, adding that in view of rising diesel prices, emphasis

would be laid on in-creasing CNG and elec-tric buses”. He informed about various aspects like commercial con-version of Vashi depot which is being imple-mented to reduce the loss.

Speaking during the occasion, Regional Transport Officer, Nand-kishore Patil, said, “Ev-eryone should be aware of traffic rules and should strictly follow these.”

The meritorious em-ployees of each depot of the transport enterprise were honoured by the dignitaries. Special hon-ours were also given to the drivers and conduc-tors who worked with dedication during the Covid period. Similarly, the children of the em-ployees who passed the 10th, 12th, Diploma, Degree examinations with excellent marks, were also honoured.

It seems that the wa-ter problem of Ulwe residents is here to stay. From last three days, the residents of Ulwe Sector-17 are not getting water from the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) and have to rely heav-ily on the water tank-ers.

According to the residents of Ganga Vihar in Sector-17, water cut is a regu-lar problem now. The complaints regard-ing the same to the CIDCO officials have fallen on deaf ears.

Satya Pandey, Chairman of Ganga Vi-har society informed, “Earlier in September, 2020, we faced lots of issues with regards to

water supply, but after several complaints to the officials of CIDCO, the issue was resolved. However, now from the last three to four days, we are again experienc-ing the same problem. We tried calling the CI-

DCO officials but they are not answering our calls. Water is essential for daily needs and if the problem continues then it will become dif-ficult to handle the situ-ation. It would be really

good if CIDCO starts supplying water on pri-ority basis and solve the issue as it has done in other nodes under its jurisdiction."

Sanjay Barve, a resi-dent of Ganga Vihar who works at APMC

Market in Vashi said, “We are hopeful that the problems will get solved soon. If the problems persist, then it will be very difficult to stay in Ulwe. Pres-ently, we are forced to rely on water tank-ers.”

Atul Nalwade, CI-DCO Junior Engineer from Ulwe said, " We are trying to sort out the problem that the resi-dents of few societies of Sector-17, Ulwe are fac-ing. We are working on it on a priority basis."

To commemorate the 125th Birth Anniver-sary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, 23rd Jan-uary has been declared as ‘Parakram Divas’ by the Union Government. Cit-izens decided to observe the day on their own way. Due to the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic and protocols, citizens did not organize any particu-lar event and observed the day in a soulful way inside their homes. The

homemakers played conch at 12.15 pm at the birth time of Subhash Chandra Bose, who had floated Azad Hind Fauj and played an important role in India’s struggle for Independence.

Navi Mumbai Bengali Association (NMBA) observed the day in a different way. The members visited three orphanages at four different places in Koperkhairane, Airoli and Ghansoli and spent

a quality time with the children. Around hun-dred children were pres-ent on this occasion. The members organized a talent event in remem-brance of two icons of the country: Netaji Sub-hash Chandra Bose and Swami Vivekananda. Games and fun activities were also conducted for the children. ANOTHER SETBACk FOR BJP...

Gaikwad and Vaibhav Gaikwad joined NCP in the presence of NCP Chief Sharad Pawar.

Reacting to these turn of events, BJP MLA from Airoli Constituen-cy, Ganesh Naik during one of the events said that it does not really matter if the BJP cor-porators choose to join other political parties. “BJP has the ability and the capacity to win the upcoming NMMC elec-

tions as the residents of the satellite city are well aware of the works done by the party,” stressed MLA Naik.

Eknath Shinde, Thane Guardian Minis-ter and Shiv-Sena senior leader said, "On Satur-day, Ramashish Yadav joined Shiv-Sena ahead of the NMMC elections. Many corporators from BJP are joining Shiv-Sena ahead of the elec-tions. This clearly shows that all is not well with the BJP and the mem-bers are not happy with

the party leadership and their policies. In the days to come many more cor-porators are likely to join Shiv Sena."

Speaking with the Newsband correspon-dent Ramashish Yadav said, "I quit BJP because of the political reason. I belong to Yadav com-munity and in BJP, the Yadav's were not getting the needed mileage. To be able to stand for Ut-tar Bharatiya's of Navi Mumbai and be their voice, I decided to join Shiv-Sena."

    EditorialISSUE: 194 24 JANUARy, 2021

Only few decades back, the people were learning to man-age resources and today we are al-ready late for learning to manage the waste. Huge quantities of waste are being generated in urban life style, which has a different consumption and waste generation pattern from that of the rural areas. For a city like Navi Mumbai and Mumbai, the management of wastes has assumed unmanageable proportions due to large quantities of waste generated and limited avenues for disposal. So it becomes all the more imperative to treat the waste and re-cycle it for re use.

As one approaches Mumbai/ Navi Mumbai one is greeted by huge dumps of garbage, polythene bags and other untreated waste lying close to the railway lines and areas inhabited by the slums. In spite of all the information and cue available from the experiences of other mega polices in the world, Mumbai/ Navi Mumbai could not take the required steps for waste management timely. Navi Mumbai which was conceived as a planned, clean city also could not capitalize on the experiences available from Mumbai and it too went the Mumbai way and here also one can find huge dumps of garbage emanating foul smell, polluting the

environment and swarms of flies acting as carriers of diseases.

It is quite surprising to note that the concept of waste management was given thought quite earlier at the time of formation of the city and pol-icies were formulated in this regard but again like other policies, these too, were lost sight of mid way. The concept of dry and wet waste seg-regation, sewage treatment plan and utilizing its effluent for horticulture and other non domestic purposes, treatment of bio-degradable waste through vermiculture and incinera-tors is already existing and was be-ing practiced but not very earnestly. Now with the aim of implementing these policies of waste management effectively, the NMMC has come out with penal action for violation of norms in this regard. Likewise, strict action should be taken against the illegal dumping of construction debris. It is for NMMC to reflect its seriousness as regards the imple-mentation of its various policies and should educate and bring awareness amongst the residents towards the benefits of adhering to these waste management policies in larger goal of environmental pollution control, apart from saving depleting resourc-es and saving on waste disposal cost.

By Dr. Vandana Mahajani“Mark me, one of you will have to

be Guru Gobind Singh if you want to do good to your country”, said Swami Vivekananda. Guru Gobind Singh was one of the last and the most heroic of our race that shed his blood for the cause of religion.

On 20th January we paid homage to Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th and the last Guru of Sikhs. In 1708, guru ji took Samadhi. A great leader, warrior, philosopher religious and spiritual leader Guru Gobind Singh is revered by all people across all religions.

Born to Guru Teg Bahadur and Mata Gujri at Patna into a Khatri fam-ily, he was the only child. They called him Gobind Rai. He saw how fear-lessly his father gave his life when he was asked by Aurangzeb to convert to Islam. He then became the guru at the young age of 9 years.

The story of his birth is also interesting. Pir Bhikan Shah, a Muslim mystic was performing prayers. He saw a shining light in the sky and started moving in the direction of the light coming from the east. He reached Pat-na sahib in Bihar. He saw little Gobind and placed two bowls before him, one filled with water, the other with milk. Each bowl meant he would either be Hindu or Muslim. To his utter surprise, little Gobind placed his hands on both the bowls. The Pir bowed in reverence to this holy soul that had come as a saviour of human-ity from atrocities fallen on the people.

In his autobiography ‘ Bachi-tar Natak’ Gobind Singh ji writes that in his early life he was medi-tating on the Hemkunt mountains when Gods ordered him to go to estab-lish a religion to save the world from atrocities. And that the Guru did!

He was a brilliant child. He was ex-pert in Sanskrit, Persian, Punjabi and Braj languages. He was brave and had tremendous clarity of thought. One day in the year 1675 a group of Kash-miri Brahmins under the leadership of Pandit Kripa Ram visit Ananpur sahib. They asked for advice from Guru Teg Bahadur to protect them from atroci-ties of Aurangzeb. Guru Teg Bahadur was sitting in contemplation of what to do when young Gobind came in and asked what the matter was. Guru said that a truly worthy person had to sacrifice his head if the burden of the earth had to be reduced. “None could be worthier than you” replied Gobind. The rest is history. He was beheaded on November 11, 1675 at Delhi by Aurangzeb.

At 13 Gobind Singh was ordained the next guru before Guru Teg Baha-

dur left Anandpur. His early 20 years went in building his physical and men-tal strength. He was a great poet also and wrote in Punjabi and Brij. He en-gaged 52 poets to translate the Hindu epics. He fought a number of wars and was also almost settling peacefully.

He initiated Khalsa panth in 1699. Khalsa means Pure. They wear all vis-ible symbols of Sikh faith. The five Ks of the panth are, Kangha, kara, kesh, kripan, and kaccha. This has become a part of Sikh attire today. The story of how he chose his men is interest-ing. Guru asked men who would sac-rifice themselves for their faith. Five men came forward. When the first came, Guru took him inside and came out with blood stained sword. Others thought that he had been killed. Like this five men came forward. They later became the nucleus of Khalsa.

The enemies that Guru had to fight were Mughals and the Pashtun Hill tribes. Guru had to pay a heavy price. All his four sons were martyred. His wife mother and father were also killed. He himself fought till his last breath. It was on the growing peace that made some rulers uneasy and they planned to assassinate him. He was treated immediately, but again the wound burst open and he saw his end near.

Guru proclaimed that after him The Holy book, Adi Granth would be their Guru who would guide them in future. The divine messenger left this world leaving behind a message of peace, courage and kindness to the world. Years later Swami Vivekananda still put Guru’s example forward to create youth who would work for this nation and solve the problems and challenges facing it.Dr. VandanaMahajani is Vivekananda Vichar Doot, Nagar Pramukh, Vivekananda Kendra Kanyakumari, Navi Mumbai Branch

During the meeting of all Members of Parliament (MP), MP Rajan Vichare raised the pending issues of his Lok Sabha constituency and requested the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray to start the construction of the new bridge approved by MMRDA on the creek bridge from Vikhroli to Ghansoli in Navi Mumbai.

During the meeting he said, considering the future traffic congestion due to the new airport being constructed in the satellite city, it has been decided to create a coastal road to ease the traf-fic movement. He further high-lighted that during the meeting held on 24th December 2020, it

was suggested that the work should be undertaken by MMRDA. But since this has not been implemented, orders should be issued once again by the

CM’s office. He further demanded that orders

should be passed by the CM to speed up the flyover from Orange Corner

(Mahatma Phule Bhavan) at Kopari and the flyover at Turbhe. He requested the Chief Minister to organize a meet-ing between CIDCO and the District

Collector to acquire the required land and give instructions to the officials at his level to sort out the issue of rehabilitation.

“CIDCO had taken the de-cision to start the development work of all railway stations in Navi Mumbai which did not have lifts or escalators for senior citizens. An order in this regard should be issued immediately. CIDCO had also agreed to pro-vide new trains on the new route from zzto Kharkopar. The order for the same should also be is-sue,” demanded Vichare.
