Prime Minister ishitting the rightchord in promotingchildren's educationin his Parkisha pecharcha. It came atthe right time on theeve of public exami-nation. Thismotivated the PrimeMinister to meet thescientists, the verynext morning. Headded that everyfailure in life is astepping stonetowards success. While interactingwith the students,PM Modi talkedabout the infamousTest match held atEden Gardens in2001. The objectivewas to highlight thesignificance of astrong will anddetermination in life.He stated that eventhough India was allset to lose the match, the players did notget demotivated. Theextraordinary inningsplayed with RahulDravid and VVSLaxman is a testimo-ny to it. He alsohighlighted the caseof Anil Kumble whose“positive thinking”and courage led himto bowl, despite achin-injury againstWest Indies inAntigua.

The Prime Minis-

Myopic educational policyAn illiterate nation cannot progress. This universal truth is

all the more visible in our country, which in spite of all the re-sources still appears amongst the list of the developing na-tions. Unfortunately in spite of the sound vision of the stal-warts who drafted our constitution and gave the education sec-tor the due importance, even after more than five decades thecountry is largely illiterate and is lagging far behind. Enoughattention has not been given so far to the education sector.Every government since independence has viewed spendingon education as expenditure rather than as sound investmentfor future. Due to this hindsight policy what we developed is apool of illiterate man power which is being viewed more as aliability rather than an asset in this machine age.

After achieving independence, the first step should havebeen to transform the teeming millions, largely illiterate, intoeducated lot as it would have strengthened the nation. In spiteof clearly laid down fundamental right for education in the con-stitution, various governments both central and states failedmiserably in providing education to most of the children onaccount of poor vision and lack of will. Incidentally the privatesector could realise the enormous commercial opportunity inthis vital field, which the governments failed to comprehend. To do their bit, the governments treaded the easier path byformulating policies which apparently indicated government'scontribution to this sector like making available plots at nomi-nal costs to the trusts for running educational institutions. Thisturned out to be doubly beneficial for the trusts generally headedby some politician, who not only commercialized this once no-ble profession to their gain, but also started dictating termsand conditions for admission to these institutions, thus indi-rectly controlling the education sector. However, this was pos-sible only due to the connivance with the educational depart-ment of the government. Since the avenues for education didnot grow commensurate to the population, these institutionscame in demand and they started the policy of auctioning theseat in the institution by way of donations. Since the demandcould be met only by the privileged few, the gap between thelearning opportunities for the poor and socially disadvantagedand the effluent lot, has widened. The absence of educationalinstitutions run by government has made the matter worse.

In Navi Mumbai too, although in the past few years, a num-ber of good educational institutions have come up, but still thereis a scarcity. More institutions should be developed so thatthere is opportunity for all. It shall be ensured that the institu-tions permitted on concessional plots follow the fee structurecontrolled by the government and that they do not resort todonations and have transparency in the admission procedure.

It is time that government realizes the importance of curb-ing illiteracy by making due investments in the education sec-tor besides effectively controlling the private institutions. Thisway it can convert huge human resource, which is being viewedmore as a liability into asset, as is being visible in the IT sec-tor. Most of the countries of the world are today selling theireducational assets to foreign students for revenues besidescross subsidizing education for the students of their country. With educational institutions like IITs and IIMs having madetheir presence felt on the global map, we can also establisheducational institutions of repute and lure foreign students forrevenue, for cross subsidizing the education cost for studentsof our country.

Chairman Dr. JayajiNath said that thecivic body is commit-ted to bring outquality players and

in future many newactivities will beimplemented throughthe committee.

Social media is boon for youths but it is more as a cursebecause the youths are surfing on social media at everysecond. They have forgotten to socialize practically andlive their life along with people around.Shreya Acharekar, TY B.com, Pillai College

FROM THE CAMPUS Your views on youths getting hooked to social media

In modern life social media is developing fast and is es-pecially popular among the youth. However there aremany youngsters who cannot control themselves andare addicted to social media. Addiction to social mediahas many serious effects including poor study habits, living away from reality. Because of social media thestudents who were excellent are now performing poorly.Ritisha Davis, TY BA Wilson College

If you use social media for a good cause it is of no harm. Unfortunately, the youths nowadays are addicted tosocial media to gain attention and waste their time. These two things have caused some serious damage inthis generation. After this addiction when you take awaytheir social media, they feel they have lost an identity. When things turn ugly, they go into depression and sui-cides. Social media should be used up to a limit withgood intentions only then we will face no blunders.Apeksha Sangam, TY BMM Journalism , Pillai College

Today a large chunk of an average youth's daily life isspent in updating and looking their best on social me-dia. Social media is very addictive and has been designedin such a way that people just disappear for hours be-hind their screens. In such a scenario, a degree of per-sonal restraint has become paramount.Abhijit Prakashan, SY BMM, Pillai College

Children and young teenagers have become addicted tosocial media. Social media has become so important thatkids these days prefer to share their problems on socialmedia rather than discussing it with their parents. Butshould children be blamed for this addiction where asparents themselves don't have time to spend with theirkids? They themselves are busy working and surfinginternet. After all, kids grow up looking up to their par-

The use of social media has both positive and negativeimpacts on youth today. The positive impact is that so-cial media has become an instrument for the youth tokeep themselves updated regarding the things happen-ing in the world and also to stay connected with familyand friends. But this also becomes a negative thing asface-to-face social interactions have reduced drastically.Another thing I've noticed is that sometimes we are so

glued to our phones that we forget about our responsibilities. Social mediahas affected productivity of youth to a great extent. Just keep some re-strictions on oneself then social media would be a blessingAnupama Sajan, SY Engineering in Electronics and Communication., Fr. Agnel Col-lege

Cowardly act by unscrupulous elementsThe church of St Francis of Assisi at Satellite Town in Kengeri, Ben-

galuru has been attacked on the night of January 21, 2020 by unknownmiscreants. The alter has been vandalized and the tabernacle destroyed.Holy Communion has been strewn all around the place and trampledupon. We Christians condemn this dastardly and cowardly act of unscru-pulous elements and urge upon the police and the authorities to arrestthe culprits immediately.

Democratically Democratic CountryDespite 50 plus ranking, Indian sub continent is the most peaceful

and democratic country. We faced all terrorist activities inside our coun-try and in spite of all the terror we came out trumps with timely mea-sures and almost got rid of them in Jammu and Kashmir after a greatstruggle.

The so called erosion of civil liberties came in recent years after thefailed attempt of disturbing the nation through agitation and strikes af-ter terror efforts failed. The economy also suffered in the process becausepeople are ready to work against the government for Rs.500/= and a plateof Briyani and that look rather ridiculous. In the top countries like Nor-way, Iceland and Sweden people cooperate with the government and reapeda harvest of facilities, whereas in India, we try to damage the publicproperty and thereby bringing disrepute to the country. India is the onlycountry for the people, by the people and of the people and there is nodoubt about it in the 71st year of Indian Republic. It is not the time tounderestimate our world standings by mere rankings.

A slap on the face of the oppositionThe Supreme Court made it clear that it will not grant stay on the

Citizenship Amendment Act or the National Population Register withouthearing the Centre. It is a right step in the right direction and a slap onthe face of the opposition. The BJP has described the Supreme Court’srejection of a stay on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) till thepetitions are heard by a Constitution bench as a setback to the opposition.

The rejection of a stay on the CAA till the matter is heard is a slap forthose who were unleashing violence on the streets and attempting to bull-doze institutions to suit their political agenda. The agitation, strike anddisturbances all caused human loss and a huge financial loss and nothingmaterialised in the one side attack. The Central government is geared upto present all the arguments in favour of the CAA and are confident thatthe Hon’ble Court will find this humanitarian legislation within the am-bit of constitutional framework and reflecting its spirit.

It is a matter of national shame to provoke the government when boththe houses of Parliament cleared the bill with a voice vote.

One would agreethat Trade unions inall state-run banks, inthe past, have actedas a powerful correc-tive force against theexcesses by bankmanagements. Onecannot ignore the factthat the trade unionscontinue to be aformidable force innationalized banks.During last sevendecades Bank Employ-ees had fought manyBattles - but have notlost in a single one. They have won ineach and every battle.Their strength is theirunity among rank andfile. Supporting thisstrike call. No doubt, the merger exercisehas already been setin motion and it is

Bank employees have always stood like rock and supported Government schemesreckoned to be amatter of time beforethe process is complet-ed; the employees aremaking a last-ditcheffort to stall it.

During demoneti-zation, our PMNarendra Modithanked all banksemployees for goingthe extra mile toensure that theimplementation of thedemonetizationscheme was on track. There is no doubt thatall bank employeesdeserves a big ap-plause for workingfrom morning to tilllate hours for thebenefit of customers inthe exchange of highdenominations, collection of depositsand other regularbanking transactions.

Our PM also statedthat “The amount ofwork which bankemployees normallyhave to put in over ayear, they haveworked more thanthat in the last oneweek alone”. Bankemployees really needsalutations since theyare working longerperiods with tirednessvisible on them. Theyface the people’s wrathfor not providingsmaller denominationnotes - but they arehelpless since thesenotes are not suppliedby planners. In case ofbank officers, thereare no specific timingsfor their working andmany a time, theirwork stretches from 9to 10 hours every day.

It is observed that

the moment bankopens the door; peoplerush in like a herd ofbulls. They push eachother to move aheadand shout at bankemployees for notletting them inimmediately. If bankdo not follow anorganized system, theentire branch may fallinto chaos.

The public sectorbank employees doseem to have risen tothe occasion and byand large have beendoing a really com-mendable job underdifficult circumstanc-es. There is no doubtthat bankers havealways performed thetask given by theGovernment rightfrom the time ofnationalization.

Bankers have alwaysin the past stood likea rock and supportedthe Govt move andmade the Govtscheme successful inits drive. Bankersneed good reward forits work.

Here I would liketo point out that byand large, a bankemployee/officer nevergets his due given thequantum of workloadand financial riskwhen compared to hiscounterpart in anyother public sector/central governmentdepartment. It isvery easy for peopleoutside the industryto pass comments. Itmust be rememberedthat the bank employ-ees are known fortheir contribution in

building the IndianEconomy.

get a little late there. But, we women alsohave the virtue ofpatience.

Newsband: What

motivates you whilewriting?

Sweta Samota: Ilove sharing mythoughts and ideasthrough my writings.Fiction or nonfiction -the writing is likegiving wings to mythoughts and travelingacross the world. It's

Althoughwe are capable andtalented, we get thatextra push when wehear how someonelike us was able tobreak the ceiling andmake it to the sky.But with time, wetend to forget howspecial each one ofus is and there isnothing we cannotachieve. spend at least 10hours every weekreading books. Thai-land and China arenext from the top.Today, readers are notonly reading paper-backs, but alsoeBooks on differentplatforms. Audio-books are also pickingup. I think, this is thegolden era for authorsand readers.

Newsband : Whatare the challengesyou face as a writ-er?

Sweta Samota: Ifyou know what youwant to write, have anorganized plan andconcept ready, thentime is the onlychallenge for thewriter. You have tobe releasing at leastone book every year. Isee authors workingday and night andreleasing 2-4 books ayear. Time is thechallenge for me. Itrequires a lot of focusand discipline to keepchurning books afterbooks in a year. Whenit comes to genre, it'skind of taken in badtaste if you as afemale writer writeromance/thriller inIndia. Women areexpected to writefeminist/inspirational/memoir/children-bookkind of stuff. Theyaren't expected towrite romance/thriller/sci-fi. (No wonderwomen writers takeup male pen-names towrite these genres!)But if you startignoring the judgementand just focus on yourcraft, it's a fair fieldfor all the genders. Ifyou are good, youraudience will love youback. Though it may

like the smell thatspreads and the entireneighbourhood comesto know that I ambaking a cake. I write

to entertain myaudience and sprinkleinformation/facts.When readers readmy work, all theyshould care about isthe story. My ultimateaim is to entertain, destress, motivate andmove the readers.Freedom of expres-

sion and the high I getafter completing astory, keeps memotivated.

Newsband : Youradvise to the youngwomen writers inIndia?

Sweta Samota:Read more, writemore and ignore thenaysayers. Give yourbest work to theaudience and don'tfeel shy to improveyourself daily.

Newsband: In 5years down thelane, what kind ofwriting or whatgenre are youplanning to workon?

Sweta Samota: Ina matter of 2 months, you will be inspired toread non-fictionalSelf-Help/MemoirAnthology from me. I
