Angered over losing a cricket match, some youths attacked

three brothers of the winning team with a wooden stick. The incident happened in Kalamboli on Sunday night. The brothers sustained seriously injured in the attack and are undergoing treat-ment at a hospital. Kalamboli po-lice have arrested Harpreet Baljit Singh Khera, 19, on charges of assault and rioting. Police have launched a search for the other attackers.

The Kalamboli Cricket As-sociation had organized cricket matches last Saturday and Sun-day in front of KLE College in

Kalamboli. The final match was played on Sunday evening. Cor-porator Vijay Khanavkar's team consisted of Tushar Tiwari and his brother Chetan and other members were playing a match against Jagraj Singh Sindhu, Gu-rudev Singh Bhat and other mem-bers. Both the teams played a fine cricket match on Sunday and Tushar Tiwari's team won.

At around 10 pm, Tushar Ti-wari and his brother Chetan, who won the cricket match, were at their medical shop. Jagraj Singh, Gurudev Singh, Sunny Singh, Happy Singh, Ranjyot Singh and eight to ten others came with wooden sticks. Some of them

then entered the medical shop and dragged Tushar and Chetan out. They then insulted them and started beating them with wood-en sticks. Tushar's elder brother came to rescue, but the assailants beat him as well. After getting information, Kalamboli police rushed to the spot. By then all the attackers had fled. The police rushed the three injured brothers to the hospital for treatment.

Harpreet Baljit Singh Khera, 19, was arrested on charges of as-sault and rioting, said senior po-lice inspector Satish Gaikwad.

Gaikwad further said that two squads have been formed to nab the others involved in the case.

gistic with it and holis-tic to our vision for the Navi Mumbai project,” said Dr. Sanjay Mukher-jee, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, CI-DCO.

The aerocity is being planned to accommo-date financial services, corporate offices, ex-port oriented services, aero centric warehous-ing along with hotels, hospitals, residential and entertainment facilities, generating an employ-ment potential of 2 to 3 lakhs. Considering the

height limitation due to the closeness of the air-port, the total built up area is expected to be about 50 million sq.ft. The infrastructure will be planned and devel-oped as state-of-the art facilities for Smart cities.

“Cities worldwide are unlocking the latent development potential in surrounding properties, leveraging local assets and regional economic strengths, and uniquely positioning their airports as passenger hubs, cargo hubs, or ‘value added’ hubs. The aerocity in Navi Mumbai will be de-veloped keeping in mind

the requirements of the passengers, export hous-es, warehousing needs etc. Passengers, who are coming to city for a short period, need not come to the main city at all and can stay in the aerocity itself. This cuts down on travel time and makes it convenient and eco-nomical for them,” said Geetha Ajit Pillai, Proj-ect Director (Corporate Projects) & Airport I/c.

Once developed, the aerocity will be one of the central attractions of the city, with round the clock activities.

The concept plan has been finalised and a de-

tailed master plan along with a detailed design of the facilities, financial assessment, marketing plans will be taken up shortly.

“The state govern-ment has brought out a uniform development control rules, which is al-most similar to the glob-al floor space index. The same will be followed while developing the aerocity. Further, utility ducts will be provided to ensure that roads are not dug whenever mainte-nance is required and the residents are not incon-venienced,” said a senior official from CIDCO.

In our country when a marriage hap-pens, the daughter-in-law moves

into the husband’s house to live with his parents. But now, we find that this tradition is slowly changing, and in-creasing number of women prefer to start nuclear families, away from their in-laws. There are many reasons behind this but the main issues are privacy and compatibility issues with in laws.

One of our acquittances told her problem. She was a regular visitor to her husband’s house and maintained an excellent rapport with her to-be in-laws. But after her marriage, her equation changed with not only her mother-in-law, but also her father-in-law. They started asking her to dress in only Indian outfits, and even eat only what they liked. She felt suf-focated, and she with her husband moved out eventually.

One of the girls was a working woman and she often came late from work. It was pre knowledge to the family but the mother-in-law did not like it and she pressurised her to leave the job. In this scenario husband did not have any problem. She with her husband now live separately.

Sometimes mothers do not like if their sons are influenced by their wives. Some pollute their son’s mind against the wife. Why there are so many differences in this relation-ship? Today the reality is that while

the conflict between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law is an age-old one, the difference in the outlook of the young, progressive woman has added another layer to this problem. A mother-in-law is happy to see her son married initially as it is her cher-ished dream, but after a while, inse-curity creeps in. The mother-in-law is used to running the house in a cer-tain way, and she feels threatened if the daughter-in-law wants to make changes. The new-age woman doesn’t sit at home like her mother-in-law did

when she was a young daughter-in-law. The new-age woman works and contributes to the household’s earning and she cannot contribute so much to home as she has to maintain balance in office and home. On the other hand, the daughters-in-law, too, might not be used to taking advice from a new matriarchal figure. A daughter-in-law becomes part of a new family so the mother-in-law advises her in the way she would advise her son, but , pro-gressive women have an issue with that. On the other hand, the daugh-ters-in-law, too, might not be used to

taking advice from a new matriarchal figure in their lives. A daughter-in-law becomes part of a new family. So, the mother-in-law advises her in the way she would advise her son. But it creates problems.

If it is a good idea for the husband or son to get involved in such situa-tions, I don’t think so because hus-bands should make sure they don’t hurt both the mother and the wife. But striking a balance can be tricky. Sometimes the son knows about the issues between his mother and wife, but he doesn’t know how to deal with them. Although moving out of one’s parental home may have been the solution for many but it is not a course of action that should be taken lightly. Shifting out shouldn’t have a negative effect on the in-laws and it is important that people who move out of their parents’ homes continue looking after them. The elderly can get insecure about a lot of things, and losing a son or a daughter-in-law adds to that fear. The solution for warring mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law is that they should discuss their issues in the presence of a third trusted per-son, and attempt to reach a resolution amicably. The in-laws should realise that the times have changed so they should not ask the daughter-in-law to change according to their liking, they should try to come to terms with her outlook. Harmony in relations can be brought by the effort of both the parties and the person who will be happy ,is the sandwich between mom and wife ,i.e., the son . The major conflict between a mother-in-law and a daughter-in-law arises from this fact

that the mother was the most impor-tant woman in her son's life and when the wife comes, there is a shift in this paradigm. Mothers should go to great lengths to avoid making a son choose between her and his wife, even in trivial matters because it is a battle that just can't be won. We can never define which is important, a son to mother or husband to a wife. Mother is one who has given birth and made children her world while a wife is one with whom he has to spend remaining life so both are important and we can-not prioritize between them.

Building a relation is about em-bracing differences and celebrat-ing likes and in our country a girl is married into a family, she has to adopt to new norms and habits of the new family. Issues arise because of comparison which we unknowingly make. Girl compares her husband’s home with her maternal home and the differences start coming out ,other things are subproduct of this .

For daughter in laws, the way to husband heart is only through his Mom. so first win her to make a place in your husband’s heart. Give her more importance than you think and if you cannot become her god friend atleast do not become her enemy.

For mother in laws, you might be the queen for your son but do not command on your daughter in law directly. What you want to say, say clearly without hesitation always in proper way. If you want them to fol-low a tradition of your family put it positively, just teach her how it is here instead of comparing with some-thing else.

Fire safety audits enable the organizations to address the is-sues by identifying the following: identifying all significant fire hazards; identifying the people who are at risk from each haz-ard; evaluating if existing control measures reduce risk to a tolerable level. Fire audits are essential safety measures. Plen-ty of people and society do alter their structure. In case fire catches due to search alterations, it might become impossible for fire extinguisher to overcome fire. Regular structure fire au-dit will keep control on rampant illegal alterations of property,

which might be detrimental to the people in case some unforeseen situation arises.Hardik C Shah

The concerned authority has taken a great step of doing the fire audit henceforth. This action will ensure to minimize the fire incidences that may happen due to any unforeseen reason. Such decisions will further improve the trust of the common man in the authorities. We welcome this decision.

Beena Singh, Singer, Kamothe.

Very often we see huge fires in industrial complexes, hospitals, theatres, malls and other public places. When the tragedy takes a toll in terms of casualties, the role of the fire department takes a centre stage. It is often seen that there are rampant illegal ad-ditions to these public places, be it hospitals, malls or any com-mercial places. They manage to get away due to the support of the local municipal authorities. Due to these illegal additions, the safety of the place is always compromised. While it is manda-

tory to get the fire audit and certificates from the fire department, we see that in the majority of the places, no fire safety norms are in place. Hence, the role of fire audits becomes questionable. Many establishments get away from the fire safety norms due to their connections at the higher level. Talking about Navi Mumbai, I can say that fire audits are not being implemented seriously and majority of the buildings shall fail the audit test if implemented seriously. The NMMC has to ad-dress this issue very soon before any major tragedy is incurred. The fire depart-ment has to understand its role seriously and start auditing all the public utility establishments immediately. Till then, I pray for the safety of all Navi Mumbaikars and hope that the Municipal Corporation wakes up and prevents any major fire, tragedy or accidents.

Dr Pratap Mudaliar, Social worker, Vashi.

Let me begin by asking whether the authorities understand the importance of fire audits? These questions arise only after any National tragedy and ends after a month or so after the tragedy. Can anyone recall prosecution of any officials for lapses for any fire tragedy? The role of the fire department and the Mu-nicipal Corporation is very important to prevent any tragedies. Unfortunately, I don't feel that fire audits are conducted seri-ously by the authorities. Many such audits are managed and certificates obtained by the respective owners. The Municipal authorities should put the fire audit report of every commercial establishment on its website and invite public comments on the same. Certificates issued without proper compli-ances should be cancelled and the issuing authority should be prosecuted. The local corporators should also supervise each such building in his area and file his report every quarter to the Municipal Commissioner. A collective will and action is required if we need to bring the change of safety norms in Navi Mumbai. Thank you Newsband for taking this initiative.

NAVI MUMBAIKARS SPEAK yOUR VIEWS ON FIRE AUDITS CONDUCTED By THE AUTHORITIES?

Fire audits should be prioritised as a necessity and not an after-thought of an incident that may have happened somewhere else. It sounds so ridiculous when you say "let us audit because there was a fire somewhere else". Rather, the NMMC should be doing it irrespective of what happens elsewhere. Make it a priority not a coverup.

QUESTION FOR NExT WEEK:

yOUR VIEWS ON NMMT INSTALLING DUSTBINS INSIDE ITS BUSES?

Hailing Maharash-tra Chief Minis-

ter, Uddhav Thackeray for his quick response to complaints of of-ficial inaction against mangrove and wetland destruction, environ-mental groups have ex-pressed the hope that the 289-hectare Panje wetland will be saved as a bird sanctuary.

“The CM responded at 2 am on Friday to our complaint against re-peated attacks on Panje wetland, which is home to two lakh birds, by vested interests,” said B N Kumar, director of NatConnect Founda-tion. The CMO asked Principal Secretary for Environment, Manisha Patankar Mhaiskar to take up the issue.

NatConnect com-plained to the CM that all the five inlets to Pan-je wetland have been

shut down apparently to render the area dry, in violation of the Envi-ronment Department’s order.

Responding to complaints against at-tempts to destroy Panje wetland, Environment Minister, Aditya Thack-eray asked for stopping construction there. Yet several security cabins have been built by the NMSEZ and water flow blocked.

Environment Direc-tor Narendra Toke, who also heads Maharashtra Coastal Zone Manage-ment Authority (MC-ZMA) pointed out that Panje falls under CRZ-1 and hence it has to be protected. The stop-page of water flow and construction are clear violations of the Envi-ronment Protection Act, Toke said in his letter to Raigad district collec-tor.

Yet, the violations continued even on Thursday and pictures taken by local volun-teers clearly showed the blockage. High tide wa-ter flowed over the ar-

tificial bunds and filled patches. Otherwise, the place is dry, Nandaku-mar Pawar, head of Shri Ekvira Aai Pratishtan, said.

Pawar pointed out

that CIDCO leased out most of the wetland to NMSEZ though the planning body itself earmarked the area as Holding Pond No 1 as a flood control mea-sure for Dronagiri. Moreover, CIDCO en-compassed the stretch between Dongar and Panje villages as Sec-tor16 to 28 of the Dron-agiri Development Plan, he said.

Pawar, who too has been communicating with the Chief Minister against the officials' leth-argy in acting against violators, expressed the hope that the environ-mentalists will succeed in saving Panje.

BNHS which has been studying the pat-tern of birds at Panje has also made a strong recommendation for de-claring the wetland as a bird sanctuary.

EditorialISSUE: 189 19 jANUARy, 2021

In the recent past, road accidents involving two wheeler riders are

increasing at an alarming pace all over the place. While rash driving, violation of traffic rules etc. are the prime reasons for the increase in the road accidents, driving after consuming liquor is another major cause, which has not been seriously considered till now.

Long smooth stretches like the Palm Beach Marg allow the drivers to push the accelerators just for the thrill. The desire becomes stronger, especially amongst youngsters, af-ter getting tipsy, or in the company of friends. It is seen that usually whenever there is serious accident, one of the drivers is in drunken state. So far, in the absence of prop-er equipment, the RTO officials were unable to penalize the offend-ers. Now equipped with breath ana-lyzers, the task has become easier. These drives should be conducted periodically especially at strategic locations. If implemented strictly, it would help in curbing the tendency to drive after consuming liquor.

Along with stringent measures against drunken drivers, the RTO should also initiate action for not wearing helmets. While the All India Road Safety Programme Implementation Committee set up by MOST, has recommended use of helmets as mandatory for two wheeler drivers, it has not been se-

riously implemented. The use of helmets mitigates to

a large extent the fatality of the ac-cidents. It is difficult to understand why this is not being followed by the motorists themselves when the rule has been framed for their own safety? Probably, it is the tendency to defy rules, which forces us not to follow rules and regulations. Ear-lier, rules of compulsory wearing of seat belts while driving four wheel-ers or prohibiting talking on mobile phones while driving, also could not be implemented strictly due to callous nature of the motorists and the enforcing authorities. It is high-ly essential that in view of the rising accidents, the motorists themselves realize the gravity of drunken driv-ing and the peril of not wearing helmets. The authorities on their part, should continue their drives as these would help in instilling traffic discipline amongst the motorists. Only traffic discipline coupled with safety devices such as helmets and seat belts can save precious lives. Further, the proposal of the RTO to install electronic message boards is a good step. This would not only help in curbing traffic congestion by guiding the motorists to avoid taking the routes with traffic bottle-necks, but with the display of social messages would discourage the mo-torists from driving after taking a booze.

A man who had robbed many

people of lakhs of ru-pees by luring them to get jobs in the sales tax department at Mazgaon Dock has been nabbed by Panvel taluka police. The accused has been identified as Vaibhav Kamble. Although five persons who were cheated by accused Vaibhav Kamble have lodged a complaint, it is being speculated that the accused may have cheated several persons in the same manner.

The accused, Vaibhav Kamble, is a resident of Kon vil-lage in Panvel and had earlier worked in the sales tax department in Mazgaon. However, he was fired 12 years ago for being absent from work. As he had the identity card of the sales tax department, he

misused it and pretend-ed to be working in the sales tax department. He promised jobs in the sales tax department and took cash from the victims.

In a similar manner, he had lured Chandra-kant Veer, a plumber living in Dervali area of Panvel, in November last year by telling him that recruitment was underway in the sales tax department and offered him a job as a peon.

He also said that it would cost Rs 65,000 and took Rs 35,000 from him under the pre-text of registration. He also told the victim that his appointment letter would be delivered to his home address by courier after 15 days.

Meanwhile, Chan-drakant Vir introduced his brother-in-law Amit Kulye, a resident

of Virar, to Vaibhav Kamble. He demanded Rs 55,000 from him as well and offered the job of a store keeper in the sales tax department. After that the accused Kamble demanded Rs 30,000 from Amit Ku-laye's friend Lahu Vir, Rs 19,000 from Sarika and Rs 26,000 from Ajay Lashkare's friend Siddharth Yadav from Dombivali.

Despite waiting for the offer letter for days, Chandrakant Vir, Amit Kulaye and others who paid for the job asked Vaibhav Kamble about the job. But he avoided them by giving different reasons each time.

Suspecting, all of them lodged a com-plaint with the Panvel Taluka Police Station. According to the police, Vaibhav Kamble has been arrested from Kongaon for fraud.

Navi Mumbai based environmentalists

have decided to cel-ebrate the ‘World Wet-land Day’ with a more serious theme this year. World Wetland Day is celebrated on February 2nd every year. ‘Save Navi Mumbai Environ-ment group’ has de-cided to celebrate it as ‘National Persuasion Day’ where the mem-bers will persuade the state and central govern-ments to notify the re-maining wetlands under Wetlands Rules 2017 to preserve them for future generations.

Sunil Agarwal, founder of this group in-formed, “A poster mak-ing contest will be or-ganised on the occasion. Through this initiative, we would like to reach out to large number of people.”

“Every year, on 2nd February, we celebrate World Wetlands Day (WWD) to raise global awareness about the im-portance of wetlands for people and our planet. WWD is also an occa-sion to commemorate the signing of the Ram-sar Convention on Wet-lands in the Iranian city of Ramsar in 1971,” he added.

“Wetlands and wa-ter”, the theme for WWD 2021, shines a spotlight on wetlands as a source of freshwater and encourages actions to restore them and stop their loss.

Save Navi Mumbai Environment Group under the leadership of Green Warriors Su-nil and Shruti Agarwal, have been fighting con-stantly to protect the wetlands of Navi Mum-bai. Besides this, they are also creating pres-

sures on various occa-sions, on the state and central governments to notify the wetlands of Navi Mumbai and Uran as wetlands under the

Wetland Rule 2017 and include these in Nation-al Wetland Inventory Atlas.

Agarwal remarked, “We are facing a grow-ing freshwater crisis that threatens people and our planet. We use more freshwater than nature can replenish. Similarly, we are destroying the ecosystem by destroy-ing wetlands which are not only source of fresh water, but are also the lifelines for any city as they protect the cities and towns from floods and other natural disas-ters.”

“The 2021 campaign highlights the contribu-tion of wetlands to the quantity and quality of

freshwater on our planet. Water and wetlands are connected in an insepa-rable co-existence that is vital to life, our well-being and the health of our planet,” he added.

From Uran, Nanda-kumar Pawar, member from Wetland Commit-tee and the founder of Shri Ekvira Aai Prat-ishtan lamented, “Since 2008 onwards, reclama-tion (landfill on man-groves and wetlands) of these ecological sen-sitive areas (Uran) has started. 8000 hectares of mangroves and wetlands have been destroyed by projects proponents. No project proponents have applied for any kind of prior clearance permis-sion from concerned authorities, neither, any project has got clearance from these authorities as well. The current sta-tus of these wetlands in Uran taluka are shocking and disappointing. Most of these wetlands have been filled illegally.”

Naresh Chandra, the warrior who is fighting for the cause of wetlands in Kharghar said, “With this National persua-sion, we hope our fight for wetlands will get a bigger platform and bet-ter stronghold. We have to fight till all the wet-lands are secured and be notified.”

City’s environmentalists to observe world wetland Day as ‘National Persuasion Day’

In India out of 757060 wetlands identified

by National Wetlands Inventory Atlas NWIA 2011, only 42 wet-lands have been no-tified and are being protected. India joined Ramsar Convention on February 1, 1982 but only 42 wetlands are notified till date, out of 757060 identi-fied in NWIA 2011.
