Let’s Go CAMPING!TLC’s much anticipated annual outing to Camp Bloomfield this past August did not disappoint! Camp Bloomfield, which is nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains in Malibu, is an amazing camp that provides children and adults who are visually impaired and multiply disabled with a natural and safe environment to develop self-esteem, build independence and fully experience the joys of the great outdoors.

Camp Bloomfield features horseback riding, swimming, archery, campfires, climbing, music, nature hikes and arts and crafts.

TLC clients really pushed themselves to new limits. The campers spoke fondly about their ex-periences and grinned as they shared fascinating tales of their adventures.

Kim McGrady, parent of TLC resident Dustin, had this to say about this year’s camp experience:

I can’t say enough about TLC’s taking my son Dustin to Camp Bloomfield this year. Dustin is 24 and has multiple medical conditions that require continuous staff care and nursing supervision. Dustin is very opinionated as to what he likes and how he likes things to be done. He is a big worrier and will appear very distressed if things are not done right.

Dustin has been going to Camp Bloom-field for 10 summers now and previously I was the one to take Dustin to campon my own. That meant I was solely responsible for all his care from when he woke up until he went to bed, and checking on him while he slept. I was lucky if I got to eat a warm meal and take a shower while we were at camp.

TLC staff had everything set up perfectly for Dustin and I did not have to wor-ry about or monitor anything! (The first year I made a 3 page list of “How to Take Dustin to Camp” and I learned that I did not need to do that!) The staff had even arranged to have a van shuttle Dustin to activities, so no worries about pushing him up and down the steep camp trails that used to really wear me out! Dustin’s grandparents and I were able to visit and go to the campfire with everybody from camp and just participate in the fun. We learned that he really did not need us there.

Dustin participated in his favorite activities; archery in the morning and swimming in the afternoon. Dustin scored a bull’s eye in archery with help from David, his one on one staff! I was able to spend an hour in the pool with Dustin on his special swimming raft and it was really nice to see how relaxed Dustin was once he got into the pool!

Dustin had a great time at camp and I was able to visit, enjoying beautiful Camp Bloomfield. The best part? I got to go home to shower and sleep without having to sleep in a camp bunk!

Therapeutic Living Centers for the Blind

VISI0NFORWARDFall 2012

A Message From Our Executive DirectorThe primary purpose of Therapeutic Living Centers for the Blind is to provide for the lifetime needs of people who are challenged by developmental disabilities and blindness.

When TLC’s founding families bought the first facility in Pasadena to meet the needs of their children, I’m not certain that the Mission as stated above, though clearly the intent, was as clearly articulated. I am confident, however, that they were very clear in their motivation: that their adult children

deserved the experience of living as independently as possible. These founding families truly embodied the concept of “walking the walk.”

When I first started working on this article, I had intended to focus on TLC’s growth over the years, of being committed to the founders’ vision, of ensuring that the people in our programs are able to reach their highest level of independence. I wanted to highlight the many ways that we “walk the walk” of lifetime services through the growth and variety of programs that meet the needs of the smallest infants to the people who live out their lives in our residential homes.

However… as I contemplated what to include, I received an e-mail that spoke to a larger issue, yet hit the target of my initial focus of TLC’s services as they relate to our Mission and founding families. In developing news, the Department of Justice sent investigators to Florida after receiving information that infants and children with disabilities were being placed in nursing homes that are licensed for adults. Further, in many instances, these children do not have access to an appropriate education or opportunities to play with their peers. A variety of reasons were cited as to why this occurred – and continues to occur, with none seeming to justify the result.

As I think about the families in Florida who have had to make this difficult placement decision, in some cases because of a lack of alternatives, I am reminded of the origins of TLC: families who knew that there was more for their children than life in an institution coupled with the drive and determination to make it happen. While we don’t know what the future holds for the children and their families in Florida, I do know that everyone who is receiving services from TLC, regardless of their age, has benefitted from our determination to continue the work of the founding families. It is in this constant pursuit that I believe we truly do “walk the walk.”

TLC’s Day Program provides services to more than 100 developmentally disabled adults. In addition to the many classes offered in our day pro-gram, participants also get to enjoy many exciting activities. In May, a Mariachi band entertained a full house in celebration of Cinco De Mayo! The music was beautifully crafted, the costumes were rich in color and the ballet folklorico was stunning. In June, TLC was transformed into a tropical paradise, complete with a luau and leis. Professional Hawaiian dancers spent their afternoon teaching every-one how to do the hula. Smiles and laughter were abundant.

HOT FUN All Day Long!

The date, time and location of these events will be posted soon on our website at www.tlc4blind.org.

October is World Blindness Awareness Month.

Coming this Fall,

the TLC day program

participants and staff invite

you and your family to

its Annual Talent Show.

TLC has recently broken ground on the much anticipated Children’s Center. When completed, the Children’s Center will encompass a pre-school and play-ground, a re-purposed multi-purpose center, and increased parking for staff and visitors. The pre-school will allow TLC to fulfill its Mission of caring for the lifetime needs of people challenged with developmental disabilities and blindness. Not only is the pre-school an essential component for completing the continuum of care from birth to end of life, it fills a critical gap in services for children born with these special needs.

The upcoming TLC multi-purpose center will augment all of TLC’s programs and include a Resource Library for families and professionals. TLC envisions the multi-purpose space to be available for family conferences and workshops as well as for our community partners, in-cluding Cal State University, Northridge and the San Fernando Valley Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind.

Construction is scheduled to be complet-ed next Spring. For more information about the development of the Children’s Center and ways you might help, please call Kanitra Strong, development director, at 818.708.1740, ext.116.
