REMEMBRANCE DAY ASSEMBLY

November is the time of the year when we wear a red poppy in memory of those who sacrificed their lives for us during wars. Remembrance Day to me is a day that is very sad, but we celebrate people's contributions that we love and care about. The Spirit Team performed songs and students put wreaths on the cenotaph at our assembly. Students were very respectful during the gathering.

CORSAIR BOOK FAIR 2017 Article by Noor & Photos by Miles and Mohamad

The book fair started on November 13, 2017 and ended on November 20th and the book fair was held in the library. The book fair included books for all grades in French and English. Also it included craft items and school supplies. We sold the books for the education and joy of children and to raise money to support the school.

The book fair was full of students! We found that most of the popular things had sold out and we saw kids counting their money. The helpers were busy, kids were coming in and out with books in their hands. Everyone had a smile on their face. It was a successful event.

Thank you to Mr. Davies, Mrs. Carruthers and Mme. Beddoud for your help in organizing this year’s book fair and for helping out throughout the week!

ALL THE BEST MR. CANOLA

We would like to wish Mr. Canola, a dedicated member of our Custodial Team, all the best as he moves onwards and upwards in his career. He will be taking over the role of Lead Hand at “The Woodlands” Secondary School in Mississauga. He will be hugely missed by our staff and students. Mr. Canola always kept our school safe and clean and he helped everyone out where he could. He also taught many of our staff Spanish throughout the day! His last day at Corsair was Nov. 24th.

BULLYING PREVENTION AND INTERVENTION Corsair PS observed “Bullying Prevention and Intervention Week” from November 27—Dec. 1.

We focused on our school-wide problem-solving model, “SAILS” as a way to promote positive conflict resolution as well as the Peel Character Attributes (Caring, Honest, Cooperative, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive). Students listened to books and participated in follow-up activities about how to prevent bullying from happening at our school.

Grade 4 students created posters showing positive behaviours that we hope to see at our school. Thank you Mme Rodrigues for helping students complete these. Students have enjoyed looking at the scenarios in the posters!

Thank you to our grade 5 students—Emma, Daniel, Jeremiah, Olivia, Denis, Sophia and Amar, as well as Ms. Dean and Mme Puzzuoli for creating a clear, fun video for all students to learn how to use SAILS! Way to go team!

SUPERINTENDENT DARREN VAN HOOYDONK VISITS CORSAIR PS

Articles by Nolan and Dylan Hello students of Corsair!

Last week Dylan and I had an opportunity to sit down and ask our Superintendent a few simple questions.

We asked him what he likes best about his job. He said "He likes to watch students be successful and talk to other principals and answer some of their questions." His favourite sports to do and to watch are cycling, running and swimming. When all these 3 sports are combined it is called a triathlon and he has competed in them in the past (I don't think he ever won because he didn't mention it but I bet he tried his hardest and that's all that counts.)

Mr. Van Hooydonk started his new job in September and he oversees 23 schools in total. He used to be a Principal here at Corsair so I bet that Corsair holds a special spot for him. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his 3 stepdaughters aged 15,18 and 20, going out to restaurants and exercising.

I really enjoyed meeting and interviewing him and he is a really great guy! If anyone sees him in the hall when he visits please take a moment to say hi, you will be glad that you did.

Article by Nolan

AN INTERVIEW WITH MR. VAN HOOYDONK On November 15th my friend Nolan and I were interviewing Mr. Van Hooydonk. We asked him some questions about his new job as a Superintendent in the Peel District School Board and also about his leisure time.

These are our questions.

1. How are you liking your new position? Mr. Van Hooydonk loves his job a lot because he can help the Principals in their schools solve some problems. Also, he likes to talk a lot to Principals like Mr. Krueger about how to make their schools better. In addition, he likes having a personal assistant at his side, so they can work together. That's why he loves his job as a Superintendent. 2.What is your favorite sport? He likes to do cycling and swimming. He even participated in a triathlon, where you have to do cycling, swimming and running all together in a race. You got to have a lot of endurance for that big race. When he was 8 or 9 years old he did gymnastics! 3. What do you do with your free time? He said he works a lot until 9 p.m. and sometimes even later times, because he has lots of work to do as a Superintendent. Sometimes he visits his three step daughters. He goes to the gym to do some exercise but also hangs out with his family by watching movies. He also talks to other Principals to hear their problems so if there's something wrong he can be there to help. 4.What are you looking forward this year while visiting our schools? Mr. Van Hooydonk is looking forward to taking care of all 23 schools he is in charge of, helping with children and making them succeed for higher grades and assisting everybody.

This was an honour to meet Mr. Van Hooydonk. We learned about him as a person and as a Superintendent. I was completely stunned by how friendly and nice he was! Most importantly he was our Principal a very long time ago! Some students actually remembered him as “Mr. V”!

Upcoming Art Workshops…

Mme. Bhiedi's Grade 5 class will participate in a full day in-school Arts Work-shop. Thank you Toronto and Region Conservation for funding this. All students must dress for the weather. The workshop has moved to December 1st and will take place in The Roots Garden.

All Grade 5's will be working with an artist on Dec. 6th or 8th. The students will be learning about the culture of henna designs and creating their own design. This is an in-school workshop.

Grade 5 Green Team members awarded select Corsair students who have shown dedication to helping in the garden—carrying buckets of water, helping put down compost and turning the soil and a variety of other responsibilities. The medals that students received were created by our Greening Team out of recycled materials!

Thank you goes to Whole Foods at Square One for donating 80 organic apples for the Grade 5 Greening Team Tree Planting event in Munden Park. All extra apples were given to any child who purchased a cookie on the same day. Mme. Weir and Mme. Wessinger's classes received an apple as well which they enjoyed after their walk in the new communi-ty garden-"Hancock-Woodlands". A big thank you goes to the City of Mississauga's “One Million Trees” Program. The rain couldn't turn Grade 5 Greening Team students away, however thunder did. They were able to plant about 15 native trees and bushes on November 2nd.

Traffic safety in our community

Safety is a top priority at our school. Here is a list of traffic tips to keep students, staff and parents safe while commuting to and from school.

Respect traffic signs and road markers around the school.

Drive slowly and with caution on and near school property. Wait for students, staff members and parents to cross before driving past them.

When dropping your child off at the school, use the Kiss'n' Ride area.

Do not double park or do anything else to block traffic. Have your child ready to exit the car when you reach the curb.

During regular drop-off times, students are to remain in the car until it is safe for them to exit the car.

WINTER BUS SAFETY The following winter school bus safety tips will help to keep your child safe throughout the winter months:

Allow extra time to get to your bus stop.

Wear bright clothing so the bus can see you in the early morning and late evening.

Stand away from where the bus stops. Buses need extra room to stop when there is snow and ice.

Use the handrail when boarding or exiting the bus to prevent slipping on wet or icy steps or road surfaces.

Dress properly—winter clothing, hats, and boots will keep you warm.

Don't throw snowballs at the bus or other children waiting for the bus.

Don't slide on the snow or ice patches in driveways or on the street.

Don't push or shove around the bus. Someone could fall down on the ice and get hurt.

On very rare occasions, buses are late because of weather conditions or mechanical problems. Talk to your child about what to do if the bus is late. Here are some suggestions:

When possible, wait with your child for the bus.

Make sure your child knows a phone number where he can reach you or another trusted adult.

Teach your child how and where to get help. Talk to your child about what a "safe" stranger is.

Help your child set up a bus stop buddy system so your child has someone to wait with for the bus. If you have not already done so, please sign up for email alerts for bus delays. Go to www.stopr.ca and click on delayed buses, then follow the prompts to create your account:

Apply for French Immersion by Jan. 26, 2018

If your child will be starting grade 1 in September 2018, one of the important choices you will make is whether you want to consider grade 1 French Immersion (FI). To find out more about the program, visit www.peelschools.org/French

The application form for grade 1 FI for the 2018-19 school year will be available online at www.peelschools.org/French as of Friday, Nov. 24, 2017 at 1 p.m. The deadline to apply is Friday, Jan. 26, 2018 at 4 p.m. Applications received after the deadline will not be included in the random selection process and will be placed on the school’s waitlist.

Enrolment cap and random selection process

The Peel board has a limited number of spaces available for students interested in grade 1 French Immersion. At this time, the grade 1 FI enrolment cap is set at 25 per cent of all Peel students enrolled in grade 1. A random selection process is used to determine which students will be offered spaces in the grade 1 FI program.

It is important to note that applicants are not offered space in grade 1 FI on a first come, first serve basis. A computerized random selection process will randomly assign a rank to each application that is received by the deadline.

Once students have been assigned to all available spaces, remaining students will be placed, again in rank order, on the school's waitlist. Each school has its own waitlist. For more information:

Visit the Peel board website—www.peelschools.org/French. Call Corsair Public School at 905-279-1511 Visit the Canadian Parents for French website at http://on.cpf.ca/.
