Welcome to the eleventh issue of View, BAM International’s client magazine.

The articles on offer are a mix of news from the sites and some behind-the-scenes views of how we strive to bring value to our clients’ projects – by giving it our best in terms of know-how and experience, but also by constantly looking for ways to improve ourselves.

I’d like to point out two specific innovations I hope you will find of interest, both initiated by our crews in the Middle East and Gulf area: one is the use of camera drones to keep track of progress on sites (page 6) and the second is an in-house developed tool that very cleverly helps us to ensure safety on-site (page 12). Both have drawn the attention of the regional press, and the safety device i-BAM has even won an award!

Another special mention should be made of the article on page 22, which explains our decision to resume work in Sierra Leone. Circumstances related to the Ebola outbreak forced us to suspend our activities last year, but now – following a protocol developed in consultation with our client and the relevant authorities – we’re able to continue our contribution to the infrastructure development of a country that is looking to its future.

Overall, the projects we are highlighting in this issue reflect the transient state of the global construction market: new projects are awarded while others are reaching completion, and new markets emerge while others mature. We’re grateful for the way you, our clients, allow us to share in your ambitions and challenge us to deliver your plans.

Finally, I’d like to say a word of thanks to my fellow Managing Director, Martin Bellamy, who is leaving our company after six years. Martin has made a valuable contribution to the company’s ambitious growth plans and we wish him all the best in his future career.

‘One development we’re very excited about,’ says Henk, ‘is that we’re setting up a new Supply Chain office in Asia. Building on previous experience in countries such as China, we’re now able to expand our knowledge of the Asian market: where do we find the best suppliers and how do we ensure high-end quality at reasonable prices?’

‘The Asian office extends our network of Supply Chain teams in the Middle East, Indonesia, Africa and the corporate office in the Netherlands. It will be our first in a region where we’re not necessarily active as a contractor. In other areas, sourcing expertise has always grown naturally from our need to supply local projects.’

Synergy in sourcing‘Now we will be able to take advantage of the huge supply market in Asian countries to service projects throughout the global BAM International organisation. And, in the light of synergy within the BAM Group, we’re already

working on a first sourcing request from one of our Dutch sister companies.’

‘With a Supply Chain network that spans multiple continents, we’re able to share our market knowledge and take a strategic approach to commodity management. The nature of our construction activities is very diverse and changes through time: in one area the emphasis can be on marine projects while elsewhere we’re largely involved in infrastructure or general building. The advantage of our global supply chain network is that we’re able to adapt to those changes.’

Strategic use of multiple markets ‘One of the roles of the corporate office is to enable the teams in the different areas to stay on top of their markets. We provide the tools and coordinate the strategies. We also ensure that local presences match the needs of the organisation and its clients. In addition to our three current regional

offices, we’re closely monitoring the company’s activities in Australia and the Americas. We support projects in those areas with overseas procurement activities. When the time is right, we will create local support for our projects in those areas as well.’

‘The strategic position of Supply Chain within BAM International reflects the way the company works in general: always using specific knowledge of a specific market while keeping an eye on the big picture. In our case, always finding quality products and delivering them in time and in compliance with our high quality standards.’

Behind the scenes of construction, there is a multitude of disciplines at work to ensure that all is in place to enable steady progress on site. There is Plant, HR, Finance, Quality, Health & Safety and, not least, Purchasing & Logistics: the people who are involved in the earliest stage of our tenders and project onwards – and make sure all required products and services they get to the right place at the right time. Acknowledging the fact that purchasing and logistics go hand-in-hand, BAM International’s department in charge of these activities is called Supply Chain.

Drones the perfect progress monitors

Aerial views

were never easier

Eye in the sky

The drones used in the Middle Eastern construction industry are small and light-weight: just large enough to carry the digital camera and usually about one kilogram. Their typical operational height is 800 metres, with a range of three kilometres. They find their way through remote control and use GPS to mark the take-off location so that they can return home automatically in case of remote control failure.

‘Using drones,’ says Nick Geurts, ‘is the innovative answer to our client’s requirement of taking monthly aerial pictures of the progression of the works. Compared to aerial photography, our drone with HD quality camera attached to it is much, much cheaper.’

Always up-to-dateDrones, or UAVs, which stands for ‘unmanned aerial vehicle’, are fast becoming an essential tool for the Middle Eastern construction industry. The Jebel Ali

team is now using drones for its client’s monthly overviews as well its own weekly bird’s eye view of specific elements of the project: ‘We use our drone to monitor progress, methods and complete aerial inspections. It’s nice to see our progress in high-quality pictures – and very recent ones! – and it just makes our progress meetings and day-to-day discussions more efficient. It’s even possible to livestream the footage we take to anywhere in the world! It’s money well spent.’

Nick Geurts seen by the eye of the drone.

Monitoring progress on the Terminal 4 project in Jebel Ali, Dubai, is now a breeze: drones are flying over the works weekly to take bird’s eye view pictures. The perfect solution to a client requirement, says Project Engineer Nick Geurts. The aerial views were never easier and it is the way forward for the construction industry.

A final lift for the floating crawler crane on the Aqaba LNG terminal project: here is the floating crane in action putting in place the last of two high pressure marine loading arms.

The first LNG activities have already been planned on the terminal and jetty, as the floating storage and repressuration unit (FSRU) will berth on 25 May.

This FSRU is a permanently moored ship that acts as the storage facility for the LNG delivered by the LNG carriers and then re-pressurises the LNG into natural gas before discharging it into the LNG jetty’s high pressure marine loading arms. The FSRU will arrive with a part load of LNG which will be used as the commissioning cargo for live gas commissioning of the MEP systems.

The installation was successfully completed in a combined operation by the BAM/MAG joint venture’s marine and MEP teams. The operation went as planned, with the marine loading arm fully installed and bolted in position within a half hour of the commencement of the lift.

This lift signalled the end of activities on this site for BAM International’s IB-427 barge. While BAM’s marine equipment and cranes are being demobilised, work now continues on the on-shore MEP works. Also, the 24” natural gas pipeline is being tested to ensure all systems are go when the LNG arrives.

Laela Sumbawanga Road

completed

A fresh, new road surface on one of Tanzania’s major traffic arteries: BAM International and joint venture partner Per Aarsleff recently completed the renovation of the 95-kilometre road between Laela and Sumbawanga.

Upgraded from a gravel road to a double-surface single carriageway, the road is now ready to play its part in safely and swiftly connecting Tanzania’s southwest with neighbouring Zambia as well as Tanzania’s logistic hubs on the coast. In addition to the road upgrade, the project also included the rehabilitation of an existing bridge and the construction of three new bridges.

the i-BAM tool has found a warm

welcome in the Middle Eastern

construction industry.

The introduction of the small hand-held device signalled a further improvement to HSE performance on BAM International projects in the Middle East and Gulf area.

Known as i-BAM (short for ‘instant biometric Android monitoring’), the device was developed exclusively by and for BAM. It uses employees’ biometric data to immediately verify if the person has completed the required training and has the applicable certificates for the task that is being carried out.

Safety checks made easySafety Manager Fergal Kelly: ‘In Dubai, Jordan and Abu Dhabi all HSE advisors are issued with the Android device. The only thing that is required is the employee’s fingerprint or alternatively they can swipe their Project Access Card which is issued at induction stage. With i-BAM we can immediately check whether someone is performing tasks for which they have actually received training. There is also no more hassle with stickers that have to be stuck onto helmets and the data is updated on a daily basis.’

Thumbs up for i-BAMHigh praise for BAM International’s in-house developed safety innovation: Construction Week magazine awarded i-BAM the Safety Initiative of the Year 2014.

Good progressThe BAM Clough joint venture is making good progress on the product loading facility or jetty, which has been taking shape with the help of the CLB and the brand new IB-914 jack-up barge, while pipe rack modules are being fabricated in the Batam yard and breasting dolphins in Korea. Many hours have been spent already and by the end of 2014, the team achieved the first half million man-hours LTI-free!

Fundraiser The Wheatstone team organised a fundraiser for Australian Cancer Council’s Pink Ribbon Day. Through several activities, like a big auction, morning tea and selling goodies, they raised over 37,000 AUD for the fight against breast cancer. This fantastic achievement shows that BAM Clough employees are passionate about making a difference.

Logistics in a live environmentAll construction activities take place amid football matches and National Day event celebrations in the adjacent stadium, which requires weekly or even daily logistics meetings with our client to ensure there is minimal disruption. The sheer size of the workforce alone should give you some idea of the complexity of logistics: in December, the daily operative count reached 1,500 and this number is expected to peak around 3,500 in the second quarter of 2015.

Despite these numbers, however, BAM International and its subcontractors are living up to a reputation for safety: In the first six months of the project the strict protocols culminated in the achievement of the first 1,000,000 man-hours without a lost time incident.

Eleven tower cranes have been erected and construction is continuing day and night to progress at full pace on the second phase of BAM International’s project in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi: after completion of the iconic multi-purpose stadium, it’s now the surrounding area that’s being developed, with a food and beverage building, multi-storey car park, residential and commercial buildings, a hotel and infrastructure. And all in compliance with Abu Dhabi’s Estidama environmental requirements.

Added value in bathroomsDuring the design and engineering stage, the teams have been able to overcome a number of challenges as well as to deliver further value engineering initiatives. One such initiative was the procurement of 1,100 prefabricated bathroom pods for the residential units. These will realise programme savings and add value in terms of quality for our client.

Design and construct BAM Clough Joint Venture has successfully completed the design and construction of the Ichthys Product Loading Jetty near Darwin, Australia. The jetty forms part of the Ichthys LNG Project being developed in Darwin by INPEX (operator) and Total.

Ichthys LNG Project Product Loading Jetty

Scope of work The project comprised two separate vessel load-out berths, one for LNG and a second for LPG/condensate. A Y-shaped approach jetty consisting of a 680-metres leg connecting to the LNG berth and a second 630-metre leg, connecting to the LPG/condensate berth, provides access from the onshore facility. Earlier BAM Clough completed the Module Offloading Facility for the Ichthys Project.

The BAM Clough joint venture contract to design and construct the AP5 marine structures at Port Hedland in Western Australia commenced in March 2014. The structure consists of a 306-metre-long piled wharf.

Tight scheduleThe chosen solution in response to tight schedule constraints was to fabricate the steel topside modules in China, to be delivered to site fully constructed to reduce on-site installation works.

The BAM Infraconsult-led design team commenced in Perth before the ink was dry on the paper and has carried it out at breakneck speed, feeding each element of

the design out to the project team for procurement and construction as soon as it was completed. Piling works were completed early November and the installation of the seven berthing dolphins following close behind.

Record-breaking lifts Chinese fabrication of the topside structures was completed in November. The structures were then loaded onto two heavy lift vessels in Nantong, China. The first lift, and the maiden voyage for the BigLift vessel ‘Happy Star’ was a record-breaking 1466-tonne lift from vessel to shore. All modules have been successfully placed in-situ, allowing the site team to immediately get to work on the mechanical fit-out.

A mere 10.5 months after signing the contract, the Australian AP5 project reached its scheduled completion in February 2015.

The criteria for returnThe decision that it was safe to resume activities on the Oryx jetty was based on four criteria as described in a protocol based on recommendations from, among others, the World Health Organization:

1. There are clear signs that the Ebola epidemic is declining, supported by affirmative reports from authoritative sources.

2. Authorities and service organisations are determined to be in control of the situation and able to fulfil their tasks with regard to identification, isolation and contact tracing of Ebola cases.

3. Project location and employee accommodations are to be isolated and secured from the general public.

4. Adequate medical facilities and care can be provided until such time as evacuation (by air) can be arranged

‘Physical isolation

a key factor

in preventing

infections’

After a seven months suspension, BAM International and joint venture partner Stefanutti Stocks returned to resume works on the Oryx fuel jetty at the Kissy Oil Terminal near Freetown, Sierra Leone in April 2015.

The Kissy site was demobilised in August 2014 following the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Since then the joint venture partners and their client, PetroJetty, have carefully planned the recommencement of the works, with great attention to safety and security, in particular the wellbeing of our employees.

No illness on project sites‘No incidents were reported on our two Sierra Leone projects before the evacuation,’ says Area Manager Eric van Zuthem, ‘nor were any ever reported in the employee accommodation facilities of African Rail and Port Services (ARPS) in Pepel. However, at the time of the outbreak the general situation in the country was such that it provided many challenges and we were forced to demobilise the Kissy site.’

Contingency measuresAs works on the fuel jetty recommence, all necessary measures have been taken to keep employees safe from harm. Housing facilities have been moved to the Pepel camp which lies across the bay from Sierra Leone’s capital Freetown where stringent hygiene regulations are in place. The joint venture has an agreement to share ARPS’s medical facilities and furthermore has its own on-site medic provided by Northcott Global Solutions. Should the necessity arise, Northcott’s Medevac programme will ensure swift and safe repatriation.

Expert adviceEric van Zuthem: ‘The joint venture is working closely with our client and ARPS to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone on site. In preparation of our return, we’ve followed a strict protocol that was developed on the basis of recommendations from the World Health Organization and our special consultants at the Travel Clinic in Rotterdam. All measures we’ve taken have been reviewed with the Works Council of BAM International. We’re confident that the current situation meets the protocol’s criteria for a reasonable and sound basis to recommence the works.’

100 containers of steel for Terminal 3

Construction of the Terminal 3 building at Julius Nyerere International Airport has reached a new stage: after pouring concrete, it’s now time to put together the steel structure. At this stage, the skeletal building is pleasantly reminiscent of a childhood construction kit. But much, much bigger.

In Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, a BAM team is making good progress on the first phase of construction of a new passenger terminal. When completed, Terminal 3 will have a capacity of 3.5 million passengers per year, underlining the importance of Dar es Salaam economic growth in the region.

Concrete frame now completeThe structural concrete frame on Dar es Salaam’s new passenger terminal topped out in February 2015. Shortly before that date, the project reached the 1,000,000 accident-free man-hours milestone.

The first of the many follow-on trades to commence was the structural steelwork, which comprises nearly 4,000 tonnes of exposed steel to support the roof, baggage handling system and boarding bridges. The steelwork has been engineered and

fabricated in the Netherlands and is being shipped to Dar es Salaam in nearly 100 containers.

Multi-faceted and multinationalSubcontractors for the MEP, roofing, façade, skylights, baggage handling and lifts & escalators packages have been appointed and are poised to commence their works. At the same time, procurement of the remaining packages is well underway.

True to the form of an international project, subcontractors and specialist suppliers have so far been sourced from the UAE, China, the Netherlands, UK, South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania. After some delay with obtaining design approvals and disruption due to seasonal rains, the external works to construct the airside and landside facilities are now back in full swing.

Breaking ground in Costa RicaAttended by H.E. President Luis Guillermo Solis, work has now officially started on the APMT container terminal project in Moín. The terminal will be built on newly reclaimed land and will significantly increase the country’s port capacity and productivity, with short wait and turnaround times and utmost safety and security. The terminal will mainly handle reefer containers which are used for the export of bananas and pineapples.

The Moín project carefully balances economy and environment: all measures are being taken to make the construction as non-disruptive as possible.

The first stage of the project involves the reclamation of the area, which is now being executed by consortium partner Van Oord.

Next, BAM International will proceed to construct protective elements for the breakwaters and the components of the actual container terminal and marine access. After completion, the terminal will be run by APMT in a 30-year concession agreed with the Costa Rican government.

BAM recognised as world leader for corporate action on climate changeBAM is now recognised by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) as a Leader in Carbon Performance.

This means that BAM is amongst the best companies in the world when it comes to climate change responsiveness, both in performance as well as in disclosure. Kilimanjaro International Airport is one of the four international airports in Tanzania and is the second largest airport after Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam for which BAM has completed two rehabilitation projects already and is currently constructing the new Terminal 3 building.

BAM to renovate and expand Kilimanjaro Airport in Tanzania

BAM International has been awarded a €37 million design and construct contract for the rehabilitation and expansion of Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) in Tanzania, which is situated between Moshi and Arusha in northern Tanzania. BAM expects to complete the works for Kilimanjaro Airports Development Company (KADCO) in 2017.

The scope of work comprises the refurbishment of the terminal building (built in 1971), the construction of a new parallel taxiway, the extension of the existing apron and taxiways, including repairs on the runway, as well as the drainage and sewage works. Furthermore BAM will install new airfield ground lighting and floodlights along the apron.

Founded in 1988 by David Robertson, Drive Against Malaria has the support of companies and organisations in Europe and the US as it offers direct support in emergency areas by providing medication and diagnostic tools, establishing clinics, training local people and distributing mosquito nets. The Limbe Shipyard team has supported the organisation by helping to build a clinic in Cameroon and the donation of a car. The Land Rover 4x4 vehicle makes it possible to reach patients and aid workers in areas that are often difficult to access. Project Manager Rick van Lent: ‘Drive Against Malaria’s efforts to drive out malaria are impressive. Through our activities on the continent we are well aware of the malaria problem and we’re proud to be able to make a contribution.’
