Thank you for taking the time to look over this sample lesson. Our goal is to provide you with quality VBS materials that are easy to use, economical, and, above all, God-honoring.

All of our materials are conservative and fundamental. All scripture used is from the King James Version. All our music is conservative.

We have tried to organize these programs in such a manner that they are easy to use. Everything you need to organize, advertise, and run a complete VBS is included.

You won’t need to buy separate teacher’s manuals, student books, or any-thing. All our materials are reproducible! You can purchase preschool VBS, color posters, and a puppet at low additional costs if you choose.

We are pleased to be able to offer you a choice in VBS themes. We currently offer nine different VBS programs. Select the one that suits your needs.

In this brochure we will be showing you sample materials from our It’s A Jungle Out There VBS. The sports theme centers on focusing our eyes on the finish line of life.

We hope your questions will be answered, but feel free to email. We would be happy to discuss any additional questions you might have.

FAQ’S about VBS

Can our Teens help?

Yes! Teens can help with skits, verse games, songs, puppets, sitting with children and other areas. Some churches even use these materials with teen groups as a mission out-reach.

Do the children get anything to take home?

Yes. Copyready Fun Sheets are provided to give to the children daily. Fun Sheets include a synopsis of the Bible story, the memory verse, and fun games.

Do you use visuals with the Bible stories?

These lessons do not rely on stagnant, old-fashioned flash cards to convey the story. Instead, in many of the stories we use the chil-dren to act out certain scenes. The children are eager to help and this method firmly embeds the story into the memory of each in attendance.

You will need a dynamic story-teller who can use their voice and-body to portray the stories. You will be amazed at how a well-told story can rivet the attention of the entire audience. (We include info on story-telling and working with children on the platform.)

WE RECOMMEND A PLATFORM VBS

OR CHOOSE CLASSES INSTEAD

A platform run VBS uses onemain teacher who tells the story fromthe platform to all the children at thesame time. This format allows you touse only one teacher instead of several.

You will need an experiencedstoryteller and there are areas forother teens and adults to help withsongs, skits, etc.

It can be done! A good storyteller should have no problem keeping the at-tention of the children. And most church-es find they really love this format.

Some churches wish to use amore traditional approach to VBS. Souse classes if you choose.

Simply copy the Bible lessonsand other materials you want theteachers to use. You can open withthe group together for songs, thepuppet skit, offering, and then splitup for classes, crafts, and refreshments.

Use the format that works bestfor your church.

Mary Slessor - Day twoMa SleSSor

Yesterday we started the story of Mary Slessor. Mary was born in Scotland in 1848.

Even though she had a godly mother, her father was a drunk and this made Mary’s life very

difficult. Mary faced many sad and hard times as she lived with poverty and the death of

three of her brothers and sisters.

When Mary was only eleven years old she had to go to work in a factory to help her

struggling family financially. She worked long hours and must have been very tired at the

end of each day, yet Mary did not become angry and bitter. Instead she loved God very

much. She let Him rule in her heart.

Mary spent long hours at work, yet she still found time to read God’s Word. She loved

to study the Bible. She spent as much time as she could learning more about God.

Not only did Mary love God and His Word, she also wanted to reach out to those around

her. She looked around and saw that there were so many children in the town where she

lived who desperately needed to hear about the love of God. Her heart was burdened to tell

them about Jesus. Mary would go out into the streets where the rough children lived and

invite them to her church classes. She loved to teach them about Jesus.

One day some of the rough young men in the neighborhood challenged Mary as she

stood on the street and began to tell others about Jesus. They didn’t want anything to do

with God. They thought they could run her off but they didn’t know Mary. One boy took a

heavy cord and began to swing it at Mary. He thought she would run away in fear, but Mary

stood there bravely. As the boy swung the cord closer and closer to her face, she did not

flinch but stood very still. Finally the boy gave up. He turned to his friends and said, “She’s

game, boys.”

Those boys never bothered Mary again. In fact, they admired Mary for her courage.

One day when Mary was holding a Sunday class for children, a strange thing

happened. A boy stood outside the door with a whip. He was cracking his whip, not to scare

children away, but instead he was forcing other children to go into the class to hear about

Jesus. When Mary went out to ask him if he would come in also, the boy refused.

“Why do you urge others to attend my class, but you won’t come?” Mary asked.

“If I went to your class, I would feel this whip on my own back,” the boy replied.

“I will take the whip in your place,” Mary replied.

The boy was shocked. “You would bear a whipping for me?” he asked.

“Yes! Gladly, and more!” Mary replied.

The boy was so moved that he threw down the whip and went into Mary’s class. That

very night the boy accepted Jesus Christ as his own personal Savior.

Mary cared deeply about the children in her own neighborhood, but she was also very

mission-minded. She had a strong desire to go tell others in foreign lands about the Lord.

In particular, Mary had a burden for Calabar, Africa.

Mary and her mother had heard a missionary speak of the needs of the savage people

in Calabar who had never been reached with the Gospel. Mary’s mother prayed fervently

that her oldest son, Robert, would go there as a missionary, but Robert became very ill

and died. Mary’s heart was burdened to take his place. She felt God wanted her to go to

Calabar.

In 1874 the great missionary to Africa, David Livingston, died. The news went out

around the world and many Christians were so touched with his life-long mission of

reaching others with the Gospel that they also gave their lives to missions as a result. The

news of David Livingston’s death caused Mary to determine even more strongly to go soon.

She began to save her money.

The day finally came when Mary was accepted to go train to be a missionary at a school

in Edinburgh, Scotland. Mary eagerly left her home town and went to learn all she could

about serving God and about God’s Word. She would excitedly tell others that God had

called her to Calabar, Africa.

Not everyone was so excited for Mary. There were many who tried to talk her out of

going to such a wild and savage place. They warned her that she was going to “the white

man’s grave.” Calabar was an especially dangerous land. The people there were fierce and

Page 12: Vacation Bible School - QualitySpeech.com · 2020. 2. 5. · The entire program runs about 2 1/2 hours without crafts and 3 hours with crafts. An evening pro-gram can be condensed

cruel. They most often killed anyone who would dare to come near them. They practiced

witchcraft.

A small mission station had been founded on the coast and it had found some success

in a small area, but there was still a large jungle area that had not been reached because

any missionary who dared to venture in to visit those savage tribes were murdered.

But Mary was not deterred. She would not change her mind. Her heart was set on

Calarbar because God had put it in her heart to go. She considered it a great honor to

serve God there. If she had to give her life to serve God in that land, then she would do so

willingly!

Mary was thrilled when she got word that she had been accepted as a teacher at the

mission station in Calabar. She was 28 years old and much of her life had been spent

laboring in a factory, but she had also been working faithfully for Jesus. Now her dream of

going to Africa was about to come true. How excited she was!

On August 5, 1876, Mary set sail on a steam ship called the “Ethiopia.” It was not a

comfortable passenger ship. Instead she was surrounded on the ship by cargo, but she was

thrilled to be on her way!

Many of the casks that stood on the deck of the ship were filled with alcohol. Mary’s

father had been a drunkard and there were many people in the land of Calabar who were

also enslaved by alcohol. She determined to take a firm stand, with the Lord’s help, against

that terrible substance which had destroyed the lives of so many, including her own father.

There Mary stood and exclaimed, “This ship is filled with many casks of cargo and just

one missionary!”

Oh, what a missionary Mary would be for the Lord! She did not want to spend her life

pleasing herself. No. She loved the Lord so much that she was determined to live her life

pleasing Him. She was determined to let Jesus Christ rule in her heart.

Tomorrow, we will learn more about the wild land of Calabar.

Day Two

Day 2 Props: None except what they normally carry.

Enter all with the Missionary leading.

Missionary: (Stops suddenly and points.) Look! I think I see a village ahead. You wait

here while I go make sure everything is safe. (Missionary exits ahead off stage.)

Boy Scout: How exciting! We’ll get to meet some real jungle natives. I wonder what

they’ll be like?

Professor: How silly of you! Haven’t you studied anthropology? Don’t you read

anything?

Boy Scout: Read? Is reading the only thing you know how to do?

Professor: Well, if these natives are of any importance, I’m sure I’ve studied about

them!

Muscle Man: Whoever they are, I’m sure they’ll be very impressed with my fine

physique!

Boy Scout: (To Muscle Man) Aren’t you interested in anything besides yourself?

Muscle Man: Sure! . . . (Squints eyes and thinks hard.) Nope! (Raises arms to show

muscles and kisses both bulges on his arms.)

(Missionary returns)

Missionary: It’s safe to enter the village, but there’s a problem. The villagers have

been experiencing hard times. Their food is almost gone. Perhaps we could pool

our resources and help these poor people! (Points to Boy Scout.) How about you?

Do you have anything you could donate?

Page 14: Vacation Bible School - QualitySpeech.com · 2020. 2. 5. · The entire program runs about 2 1/2 hours without crafts and 3 hours with crafts. An evening pro-gram can be condensed

Boy Scout: What? They should be prepared! That’s my motto, “Be

prepared!”

Professor: Or at least they should use their brains! If they had any cranial

reasoning they should know they can harvest many of these plants and

cook them into a very nutritious stew!

Muscle Man: Or they could wrestle a Boa Constrictor and chop some wood

to make a fire. They could fry it up! They say it tastes like chicken!

Missionary: I think they are too weak to do what you suggest. But don’t

worry. I’ll take care of it. I’ll give them some of my food and I have some

extra supplies I brought in case we needed them. I can share with them.

Professor: Are you crazy?

Missionary: No. This will be a good way for me to show these dear people

the love of Jesus Christ. I will be fine. I can find plants and berries to

eat as we go along.

Muscle Man: But what about us? Those extra supplies were for us!

Missionary: Don’t worry. (Points at Professor.) You have your brains.

Professor: True! (Points to his head.)

Missionary: (Points to Muscle Man.) And you have your muscles.

Muscle Man: True! (Does a Superman pose.)

Missionary: And you have everything! (Points to Boy Scout.)

Boy Scout: I’m prepared! (Hugs his backpack close.)

Missionary: Okay, You go ahead and I’ll catch up. I’m going to help those

people.

All exit.

Day Two

Reference: Proverbs 20:11Even a child is known by his doings, whether

his work be pure and whether it be right.

(Have the children say the verse several times with you. You can project it on a screen so they can see the words.)

You: I’m not sure if Chip will be much help to us today. He’s always monkeying

around. But maybe I’ll call him to come see us. (Call for Chip.)

Chip: (Comes right up.) Hey! Did I hear someone say my name?

You: Hello. We were just talking about you.

Chip: Were you telling them how smart I am?

You: Well . . . not exactly.

Chip: Well, I am you know. I am an extremely smart chimpanzee. The smartest

one I know, in fact.

You: In that case, you shouldn’t have any trouble with the Bible verse we are

working on today.

Chip: Bring it on.

You: This verse is found in Proverbs. And I am sure a smart chimp like you

knows what the word Proverbs means.

Chip: Sure, sure I know. Proverbs. . . hmmm. Now let me think about this. Yep,

I can feel my old brain starting to work.

You: You can?

Chip: Yep, yep, yep. The answer should be here anytime now.

You: Could you hurry it up, we are waiting for you.

Chip: Don’t rush me. Genius takes time you know.

Page 16: Vacation Bible School - QualitySpeech.com · 2020. 2. 5. · The entire program runs about 2 1/2 hours without crafts and 3 hours with crafts. An evening pro-gram can be condensed

16

You: I didn’t know that. So what does Proverbs mean?

Chip: You know, when you try to rush a genius they get forgetful.

You: So what you are saying is that you don’t know what Proverbs means.

Chip: No, no, no. It just takes time. I have so many brain cells to sort through

to get to the right information.

You: Let me refresh your memory. The word Proverbs refers to a wise saying.

King Solomon wrote the Proverbs and he was the wisest man on earth.

Chip: Wiser than me?

You: Yes, I think that would be safe to say. When Solomon became King, God

asked him what he wanted. Solomon did not ask for great wealth or power,

he asked God for wisdom. And God gave him great wisdom. King Solomon

wrote several of the books in the Bible. Proverbs was his book of wise

sayings.

Chip: So does that mean that the verse we are learning in Proverbs today is a

wise saying?

You: Exactly! I guess you really are pretty smart.

Chip: I told you that already!

You: Okay, listen carefully as we say our verse for today for you. (Have children

say the verse with you.) How was that?

Chip: Is that verse really true?

You: What do you mean?

Chip: Is it true that you can know what a child is like by what he does?

You: It sure is true. Others can look at the life of each child here and see if

their life is pleasing to God.

Chip: Wow!

Page 17: Vacation Bible School - QualitySpeech.com · 2020. 2. 5. · The entire program runs about 2 1/2 hours without crafts and 3 hours with crafts. An evening pro-gram can be condensed

17

You: When the verse talks about their works being pure it refers to WHY a

child does something. What is their motive? You see, God knows our

hearts. He knows if we do right just because we have to, or if we really

want to do the right thing.

Chip: Suppose their Mom makes them clean up their room and they do it

but they don’t want to?

You: God knows if they are doing it only because they have to or because

they want to be helpful. And other people usually know too, by the way

they do the job.

Chip: So if they obey but they pout the whole time, everyone will know they

don’t have a right motive.

You: Exactly! Now you try to say the verse.

Chip: Can you say it for me one more time?

You: For a smart chimp like you?

Chip: Oh, I know the verse, I just enjoy hearing you say it.

You: Okay. (Have children say the verse with you.) Now you say it.

Chip: (Say the verse.)

You: Great job!

Chip: I told you I was smart. They are pretty smart too!

You: You know, I thought of something you might like for lunch!

Chip: What?

You: A Banana Cream Pie!

Chip: I’ve never heard of that!

You: Google it!

Chip: I will! Bye, everyone!

SampleBible Lesson

Day TwoFeeding hungry bodies and souls

Props: 2 cloth sacks:In sack #1 place 5 rolls and 2

goldfish crackers. (A cloth/burlap sack is best.)

In sack #2 place lots of rolls and an entire box of goldfish crackers. Enough for everyone in the VBS if desired.

Cast: 12 boys and girls to be disciples

1 young boy to have sack #1

Text: John 6:1-13

I need 12 boys and girls to help me with my story. (Select 12 boys and girls. Tell them they will be Jesus disciples. Tell 1 boy he will be Phillip and tell 1 he will be Andrew. Have the boys and girls sit on the stage to one side.)

Now I need one more helper who will stay in his seat for just a while longer. (Find a young boy about first or second grade. Hand him a large cloth sack to hold. The sack will contain 5 rolls and 2 goldfish crackers. Tell the boy to hold the sack but remain in his seat.)

The Bible tells us about the time, long ago, when Jesus lived on the earth. One day he had crossed the Sea of Galilee and a large crowd of people followed him. They wanted to hear Jesus preach. They also wanted to see Jesus do miracles. There were sick people who followed Jesus. They wanted to be healed.

Jesus went into the mountains to talk to his disciples and to rest awhile, but even there the crowd of people followed him. When Jesus looked up and saw the people he knew they had been following him a long time. He knew they would be very hungry. So he asked one of his disciples a question.

John 6:5b says, He saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?

Jesus knew exactly what he planned to do to feed the people, but he wanted to see if his disciples had the faith to believe Jesus could feed them. Philip just knew they would not have enough money to buy bread for everyone. (Have the disciples stand. Tell Philip to say, “We don’t have enough money to feed all these people!”)

Well, one of the disciples, Andrew, went looking in the crowd. I guess he decided to see if he could round up some food on his own. (Tell the boy who is playing Andrew to go look for some food. Have him go into the audience and bring back the boy with the sack.) Can you find anything, Andrew? Can you find someone who brought a sack lunch? Oh, you did find something. Well Andrew, bring the boy and come up here.

Andrew found a boy in the crowd who had brought his lunch with him. Andrew, asked the boy if could have his lunch. (Have Andrew ask, “May I take your lunch?” Have the boy say, “Yes, you may.” Then you take the sack.)

Let’s open the sack and see what the boy has in his lunch. There are some rolls. How many rolls are there, Andrew? That’s right 5 rolls that will represent the loaves. You see, the loaves were probably pretty small. This boy’s mother would not have sent him off for the day with 5 large loaves of bread. He could never have eaten that much.

And I think there is more in the sack. Look in the bottom. (Have Andrew pull out the 2 goldfish.) Fish! There were also 2 fish in his lunch. We’ll pretend these goldfish are fish. (Place the food back in sack.)

Page 19: Vacation Bible School - QualitySpeech.com · 2020. 2. 5. · The entire program runs about 2 1/2 hours without crafts and 3 hours with crafts. An evening pro-gram can be condensed

19

Well, that sure didn’t seem like much food. But Andrew took the food to Jesus. He told Jesus about the boy and the bread and fish. (Have Andrew hand the sack to you.)

Then Jesus told the disciple to have all the people sit down on the grass. The Bible says there were about 5,000 men there. That means, there were even more people there, because that didn’t even count the women and children! (Tell all the children with you to sit on the platform around you.)

Then Jesus took the boy’s lunch and he prayed to God. Jesus thanked God for the food.

(At this point set the sack behind a prop that will cover what you are doing. Then reach and retrieve an identical sack that has been hidden close to where you just set the other sack. In the second sack have LOTS of rolls and goldfish. The bag should still be very full so the children can visibly see the difference.)

Well, when Jesus was done praying, an amazing thing happened. Jesus broke the bread and began to pass it out to the disciples. And there was more and more and more bread. And the same thing happened with the fish! (If you have a small enough VBS group, you can have enough for everyone. If that would be too many rolls, have enough to pass out to all the disciples.)

The disciples took the bread and fish and began to pass it out to all the people sitting on the grass. There was enough bread and fish for everyone.

Jesus had performed a miracle. He made the five small loaves and the 2 fish into enough food to feed everyone there! In fact, the Bible tells us that when everyone had eaten all they could, the disciples were able to take baskets and gather up the food that was left behind.

The Bible tells us in John 6:13, Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.

Twelve baskets left over! Can you imagine? They had started out with 5 small loaves and 2 fish, and everyone ate and then they still had twelve baskets full left over! Jesus had performed an amazing miracle!

(Thank the children who helped and have them return to their seats.)

Jesus wanted to test the faith of the disciples. But he also wanted to meet the needs of the people who were following him. Jesus loved the people. He wanted them to know about forgiveness from sin and eternal life in Heaven. That was why he preached. He was concerned about their souls.

But Jesus was also concerned about the physical needs of the people. He knew that they needed to eat or they would get sick. He had compassion on the people. He cared about their needs. But Jesus did more than just care about their needs, he did something to actually help.

Sometimes we see people who have physical needs also. We might feel bad for them. We might even think, “Someone should help them.” Well, do you know what? Jesus wants you to help them. He wants us to meet needs just like he did when he was on the earth.

You see we all have physical needs, don’t we? We all need to eat at least 3 times a day to get our energy. We all need to sleep to get our rest. But some people have other physical needs. Maybe they can’t walk. Maybe they can’t see. Maybe they don’t have a nice home to live in.

If Jesus were on the earth now, he would still take care of the needs of the people. But Jesus is in Heaven and he expects us, his children, to take his place. Jesus wants us to show the love of God to others by taking care of the needs of others around us. We need to be like Jesus.

If Jesus were to meet someone who was hungry, what do you think he would do? Yes, he would feed that person. He would share what he had. We need to do the same. We can share what we have with others who have needs. If you look

20

for ways to share with others, Jesus will give you opportunities to help others.

But the main reason Jesus came to earth was to feed people’s souls. You see, there are so many people who are hungry spiritually. They do not know who Jesus is. The Bible says in Romans 3:23, For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Not all people know that God loves them and wants to forgive their sin so they can spend all eternity in Heaven.

But God loves everyone very much. That is why He sent Jesus down to earth. John 3:16 tells us, For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth on him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life.

If you are a Christian, you need to tell others about how much Jesus loves them and wants to be their Savior. You need to invite others to come to church with you.

And what about you? Have you ever asked Jesus to come into your life and forgive your sin? Or are you still hungry spiritually? Everyone needs to ask Jesus to forgive their sin and come into their life, but not everyone has.

When you ask Jesus to be your Savior, your spiritual hunger will be satisfied. The only way to have joy in your heart is to ask Jesus to become your Savior. He will be your bread of life. He will satisfy you spiritually. Would you like to ask Jesus to become a part of your life? You can.

Give Invitation.

Feeding The HungryOne day Jesus was preaching to a large crowd of people. The

Bible says there were 5000 men. That means with women and

children there were even more than that present. It was a very large

crowd!

As the time went by the people became hungry but they were not near

the town or the people’s homes, so the people had no food to eat. Jesus’

disciples went to Jesus and asked what they could to do to feed such a large

number of people. They didn’t have any food or any money to buy food. What

could they do?

Andrew, one of Jesus’ disciples went looking in the crowd to see if

anyone had any food. He found a boy who had brought his lunch. Andrew

took the boy to Jesus. The boy gave his lunch to Jesus.

Inside Jesus found 5 small loaves of bread and 2 small fishes. The

disciples must have shook their heads thinking that definitely would not be

enough food. But Jesus was not worried. Jesus knew what He was going to

do.

Jesus prayed to God. He thanked his Father for the food He had

provided. Then Jesus began to hand out the bread and fish. But an amazing

thing happened. As Jesus gave the food to the disciples to give to the crowd,

there was more and more and more food! In fact, there was so much food that

everyone had all they wanted to eat and there were 12 baskets of food left over.

Jesus had performed a miracle. He cared about the needs of the people. Jesus

wants us to care for the needs of the people who are around us every day also.

Some times there are ways we can help like offering to do a job for someone or even

by being a friend to someone who doesn’t have any friends.

Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and

whether it be right. Proverbs 20:11

Let me tell you about them.

First, let me assure you that everything we produce is fundamental and God-honoring. My husband, Gary, and I are Bob Jones University graduates. We are members of an independent Baptist church. We’ve devoted our lives to serving the Lord by serving fundamental churches. All our Scripture references are KJV. We believe materials for children need to contain solid Bible teaching. You will not find fluff and filler. We pack our materials with Bible truths and principles.

With these materials you get more than just a Bible story. In each lesson we provide clear, written materials to help you present an entire Children’s Church program. Each lesson starts with an introduction that presents the Life Lesson for the week. Then prayer and song time. Next comes the secondary story that emphasizes the Life Lesson. This could be a missionary story, hymn history, object lesson, or puppet script. Then the Bible memory verse. We provide fun games to teach the verse. Next the Bible lesson is presented. This is not a skimpy lesson. It is complete and always teaches an important Bible truth. After the lesson a challenge follows which helps the children to understand practical ways to apply the lesson to their life. There are quiz questions so you can have a Bible quiz time. Attractive reproducible Activity Sheets are provided.

We now include a full-color visual packet with the lessons, but for the most part you will need a storyteller who can take these materials, which are jammed packed with great ideas, and bring them to life by using the effective storytelling techniques which we teach in our FREE Storytelling book. We give lots of tips on holding attention and keeping the story fascinating.

There are 48 non-dated lessons. We also include 4 holiday lessons. In total, you get 52 complete lessons. You will want to use these materials in order as they progress through the entire Bible. Year One begins with Genesis 1:1. Year Two begins where Year One finishes. We currently have four years of Children’s Church materials. In total there will be six years of materials. These materials are geared for children grades 1 through 6.

I would love to have you look at one of our lessons. You can go to our Website and download a lesson or call for your free lesson. Or I would be happy to send you an entire program to look at for 30 days. I know you’ll love what you see.

My name is Wendy Collins and I know you’ll love our Children’s Church materials.
