Library Renovations

Enhance Service

Our Winter Reading program, "Resolve to Read," was a huge success this year! Altogether, our adult and young adult readers managed to read 700 books! That was double our goal of 350. In addition to reading books and submitting reviews, participants completed weekly puzzles and played book bingo to win extra entries for our end-of-program raffle. Prizes for raffle winners included gift cards and a Chicago Bears football.

Congratulations to the following winners of this year's Winter Reading Program:

Adults: Dorothy DiVito, Darcy Geer, and Judy Tichy

Young Adults: Shania Tala, Millie

Hylka, and Malari Richards

Our top readers this year were also winners. The following individuals read the most books during this year’s program: Darcy Geer, Judy Parillo, Mercy Bautista, and Millie Hylka.

The Chicago Bears also donated a laser-autographed football for our Winter Reading program this year. The winner of that prize was Linda Marek. We thank the Chicago Bears for their generosity in assisting us with promoting a continued love of reading. Thank you!

We would also like to thank all who participated in this year's

W i n t e r R e a d i n g Program. Thank you and keep reading!

Let's welcome Madison Gailus to the staff. She

is a part-time Youth Services Assistant. Madison has a Bachelors degree in Psychology from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and she is currently enrolled in the Master of Library and Information Sciences program at Dominican University.

On May 1st, the Library will reopen after a two week period of renovations to the public service areas. The redesign was necessary to improve efficiency. It is also hoped that the traffic will flow more naturally to the needed service points. Other major improvements are the development of a new periodical browsing area and improved reading area. The New Fiction Display has also been moved and given new prominence. The Circulation Department benefitted greatly from the reorganization, gaining office space, more counter space, and a workroom.

We hope that patrons will be impressed with the increased efficiency and attractiveness of the library’s new layout.

The library greatly appreciates the donations of dresses,

accessories, and time to Once Upon a Prom! Thanks to the wonderful

Our wireless network is now upgraded to Wireless-N. This means that you should experience faster

speeds when using wi-fi from anywhere in the library. Another added benefit is that

our wireless network can handle more more users and simultaneous

connections. In this age of technology-dependency, your library offers the

increased capacity to handle the technology needs from your laptop, tablet, smartphone, and the other gadgets you may be using.

On April 14th, seven committed individuals came

together for the purpose of reinvigorating the Friends of the Franklin Park Library. At the meeting’s conclusion,

three office members were named: President Oscar Arellano, Secretary Frank Cesaro, and Treasurer Marilyn

Ramian. The officers signed the articles of incorporation

needed to secure non-profit status for the group. A regular meeting time of 9:30 am on the second Saturday

of each month was decided upon. The group decided to focus its efforts on the following priorities:

• Promoting its fundraising program of collecting and

recycling ink cartridges • Working with the Library Director to reorganize the

Library’s book sale as another way of generating

revenue • Participating as the “Friends of the Franklin Park

Library” in this year’s Railroad Daze celebrations.

The purpose of the Friends Group is to support the library in its efforts to improve services to the

Community. You are invited to join the Friends at the next meeting on May 12th at 9:30 am.

The Library Friends Group Needs You!

Donna Blau was a leader, colleague, employee, and friend to the Franklin Park Public Library over more than thirty years. We here at the library would like to honor her memory. Donna Blau was the Publicity Assistant for the Library for thirteen years. Having resigned in 1987, she soon discovered the library had gotten into her blood and ran for a seat on the Library Board. She served on the Board for twenty years, holding the office of Board President twice during her long term as Trustee. Among her many contributions was the work she did to make possible the development of our current children’s room and meeting rooms.
