The Parishes of Childswickham, Murcot, and Mount Pleasant : September 2016
The Adopt a Phone Box Scheme is going ahead. We plan to use the space for book and game swaps as well as walking maps and an information hub for the village and visitors. More to follow… We have a vacancy for a Parish Councillor. A great opportunity to make a real difference to your community. We are a friendly, pro-active bunch and are particularly keen to have representation from Murcot and Mount Pleasant. Come and join us. Please contact Jackie Shields, Clerk via email at [email protected] Speeding through the village has been a problem for a while. The PCC have put together a proposal covering a number of speed limit alterations to encourage safer road use. The document has been passed to Highways. Vehicular access to Broadway Railway will massively contribute to the traffic through our villages. The council is keen to gauge opinion from villagers to ensure our best interests and safety are protected. If you have concerns or comments please do get in touch. Your views are important and together we can influence the outcome. Autumn is here. Just a reminder to check the security of your property, outbuildings, sheds etc. Make sure security lights are working and locks are secure. Bank Holiday Weekend wash out. If experienced any subsequent drainage/sewage issues we want to know. Please get in touch via the comments box outside the village hall. Want to share and read about news that may be of interest? Members brought their wedding dresses and albums to the August meeting and enjoyed reminiscing about a very important day in their lives. In September our speaker was Manuel Querioz talking on ‘From Alaska to Argentina – The Pan American Highway’. Manuel and his wife Jill spent seven months travelling in a VW camper van from the Arctic Coast to Tiera del Fuego, travelling some 28000 miles! We were treated to some wonderful photographs of people and places they encountered on their travels through USA to Mexico, Central America, Colum-bia, Bolivia, Peru, Chile and finally Argentina. The landscapes were very varied and included volca-noes, glaciers, lakes, deserts, and high mountain passes. Everyone was very friendly, except the mos-quitoes! They enjoyed the absolute freedom from everyday life, but missed hot water, toilet paper and fresh bread! An extremely interesting and most enjoyable evening. RSC trip on 29th Sept. 12:30 to 5:30pm – a few seats left at £20 (see STOP PRESS). Next meeting, Oct
5th is a Fashion show by BLUE of Pershore. Visitors welcome,Tickets £4 from Marilyn on 854661.
St Mary’s Church Childswickham Flower Festival and Fete. Thank you to Pat Hackett and the Flower Ladies for another wonderful display. Thank you also to the Ladies who kept the tea and cakes coming over the three days of the weekend. Thanks to Anona and her many helpers who set the field up for the Fete, only to be nearly washed away by the thunder storm. The first wet one for a good many years thankfully, but a valiant effort.

Hello Childswickham cricket friends Summer draws to a close, at times more slowly but at others remarkably fast. Your team have had a full season of exciting cricket-the club is healthy and well, and has eeked out a whole series of great games-OK, we might have won more but there is more in the spirit of the game and that has been fantastic. On a more serious note, it is time for the autumn run of quizzes. Thank you to all of you who support these evenings, by joining in, funding the cricket club, making friends or even hosting a round. We have arranged three quizzes between now and Christmas, so put these in your diary to avoid disappoint-ment. Dates are; Tuesday 27 September Tuesday 1 November Tuesday 28 November I shall circulate the menu and ask for teams at the beginning of next week for the first quiz. I look forward to welcoming many old and perhaps some new faces. If there are those who would enjoy hosting a round, please identify yourselves to me, with a date when you would like to appear. The cost will be unchanged at £13.50 per head to include two courses of Kevin and Carols amazing food

HARVEST FESTIVAL. CHILDSWICKHAM.
GWR Toddington Train services and special events and October 2016 The heat of the summer months may start fading soon, but there is still plenty of
warmth produced by our steam trains. With the exception of our Autumn Diesel
Gala (see below for information) we will have at least one steam locomotive pulling
trains on all of our operating days during September and October (subject to un-
expected operational problems).
Thursday September 1 and October 1/2, 15/16, 22/23 and 29/30 we will be run-ning the green timetable with one steam train, a heritage mainline diesel and a diesel railcar. You can ride on three different types of heritage rail transport in
one day! On every Tuesday and Wednesday in October and on Thursday 27 October we'll be running the blue timetable each day with one steam train and normally a diesel railcar operating. Especially for the children on the weekend of September 24/25, Thomas and Friends visit the railway and we will be running a special timetable. However, adults are not forgot-ten and we are running one of our popular Classic Vehicle Days on Sunday September 11 when the red timetable will be in operation. For the heritage diesel enthusiasts we are holding our Autumn Diesel Gala on the weekend of October 8/9, with another chance to come and see out fleet of herit-age diesels - they are all at least 50 years old. On the week-end of October 22/23 it's our new Cotswolds Food & Drink
Fayre, with the red timetable will be in operation, when a large variety of Artisan Food and Drink producers from around the region will be selling their products. On Saturday October 29 it's time for the Halloween 'Steam and Scream' Spe-cial. Get ready for Hallowe'en and join the 'Spooky Specials' throughout the day at either Cheltenham Racecourse or Toddington Stations - come dressed for the occasion.

Willersey Willersey always has activities U3A meetings at village Hall. This years AGM is on October 13th at 2.00 pm http://u3asites.org.uk/north-cotswold/page/22509 An active Anglican church St Peters The monthly magazine can be found at http://www.willersey.org/churchandvillagenews.htm For even more info about Willersey www.willersey.org And of course Willersey’s facebook Follow Bill Woods your very own man at the front.
Adventure If you are lost during the day somewhere without a map, compass or GPS handy, the best method to find your direction is to look up. The movement of the sun can illuminate your true way north. But to use this solar guide you will need to remember a few important things. In the northern hemisphere the sun always rise in the east and sets in the west. At noon it looms in the middle of the horizon and directly south. That means when you’re facing the sun at noon , walking towards it will take you south, and away from it will take you north. The opposite is true for the southern hemisphere. If it isnt noon aand you want to find your directions aand analogue watch with minute hand and hour hand can serve as a substitute compass. First make sure the watch displays the correct time. Then point the hour hand at the sun. Next, holding the watch in place, im-agine an angle formed by the hour hand and a line from the 12 o clock posiion to the centre of the watch. Then draw an imaginary line bisecting that angle. That line indicates suth in the Northern Hemisphere. During daylight saving time ie British summer time create the angle from one o clock in-
stead of 12 o clock.

This years AGM is on October 13th 2.00 pm Chairman’s Report
This is, for me, a poignant moment. This is the last time I shall be writing my remarks for the Newsletter. My three years in office are nearly over and the time is fast approaching when my successor must take over my duties and responsibilities. To be fair, these duties and responsibilities are not particularly onerous, so I find it surprising that no one has yet agreed to take on the role. The worrying aspect is that without a chairman the North Cotswold U3A will be unable to continue. We have a binding constitution, accepted by the Charity Commission, which lays down the composition of our executive committee which must consist of a Chairman, a Vice-chairman, a Treasurer and a Secretary. We have three of the positions filled, but in order to keep going a lady or gentleman must come forward, and it would be splendid if he or she came forward before our Annual General Meeting on October the 13th. If you wish to offer your services as Chairman please send an email to the following:- [email protected] and bear in mind that if I have done it for three years, it can’t be too difficult! As I’m sure you all know, this is our twentieth year as an organisation, and we are holding self-congratulatory events in September. We have 396 members who attend over 30 suc-cessful groups. Wouldn’t it be sad if we did not make it into our twenty-first year? The events I’m referring to are, of course, our Open Day in Willersey Village Hall on Saturday September 10th (please come along and support us), and our dinner at the Three Ways, Mickleton on Sunday September 11th. This event is considered to be fully booked, but we may be able to squeeze in another three or four. Please check with Tina Anderson. Before I finally surrender my exalted position I would like to thank all of those members who have served on the Committee with me during these past three years. Their toler-ance, good humour and hard work made my job easy and enjoyable. Lastly I wish to thank you, the membership, for your support. It really has been a pleasure to represent you. Keith Horden
Wickhamford Gardening Club
The next meeting takes place on Wednesday 26th October at 7.30pm in the
Memorial Hall. This month we welcome Pat Atkins whose talk is entitled 'Salves
andsimple ointments from plants". There will be samples for our members to try,
thus ensuring an interesting evening. The AGM, will now take place at the begin-
ning of our November meeting, to be followed by our social event. As members
know the committee is renowned for its speedy and efficient handling of our AGM,.
We look forward to seeing you in October. Contact Dorothy on 01386 830834 if
