What Is User Experience?A product that meets the exact needs of the customer without fuss or bother.

It’s simple and elegant and is a joy to own that goes above and beyond.

Takes a seamless effort from engineering, marketing and design disciplines.

The Definition of User ExperienceBy Jakob Nielsen and Don Norman

What Isn’t User Experience?User Interface (UI) is part of the design and part of the total user experience, but you can have good UI and still have a poor user experience.

Usability is a quality attribute of the user interface, but part of the larger user experience.

The Design of Everyday Things First published in 1998 as The

Psychology of Everyday Things, then in 1995 under this title, and then revised in 2013, the book by Don Norman, a cognitive scientist and usability engineer, introduced the term affordance and popularized the term user-centered design.

Bad design is to blame for misuse or errors in using everyday items. Design to communicate and guide the experience. Prof. Mo Krochmal [email protected]

Badass: Making Users AwesomeWritten by Kathy Sierra and published in 2015 by O’Reilly, this book explores this question:

“Given competing products of equal pricing, promotion, and perceived quality, why does one outsell the others?”

The focus is not on design, but on what users do and feel as a result of using a product.

“If we want to create passionate users, we have to help them get better. Nobody’s passionate about things they suck at. If we can help them have richer, deeper, better experiences, we have a chance of making them passionate … If we could help our users be awesome, what would that mean to them?” – Kathy Sierra

The Future of User Experience

“The user’s experience is becoming just as important as the product or service.” Adobe

Growth of User ExperienceThe continued growth of the web and the mobile app economy will make user experience increasingly important as businesses move away from online marketing for new customer acquisition to favoring regular customers and streamlining recommendation rates.

The FutureHow do we understand users' feelings. Empathy or science?

What is the best interface?

Google Glass and Leap Motion – the invisible interface

Haptic – touchable and adjustable

Then there are the devices – smartphones, tablets, glasses, VR, AR. How about languages and gestures. Ambient noise, geo-location, biodata from wearables . . .

This is going to be fun.
