Underground Human Settlement

As the population rises, demand for place to dwell increases; this results into housing

projects such as townhouses and row houses that require large area of land. Creating such

lessen the available resource of land that can be used for human needs such as farming and

business. Facing this problem, are high rise building such as condominium the only solution? A

lot of countries now are considering of making underground human settlement. Thus saving a

lot of space but still there are many factors they need to consider.

In creating underground settlement, engineers will have a vital role in planning,

designing, constructing and maintaining the underground space. During the planning and

construction phase of the underground settlement, there must be assessment from a

geotechnical engineer due to lot of disturbances on the earth’s layer that may cause failure to

the whole project.
