Dear Parents,

The term is ticking along very well. The students have enjoyed an author visit earlier in the

week, they have been practising each morning for the upcoming cross country event and pre-

paring for gymnastics by the end of the month. Ashleigh had a great experience at the Drama

camp last week and is training with the JeriBerriO netball team in preparation for the first

game in the knockout competition to be held soon.

Federation Council: Library and Information Week

This week The Federation Council Libraries celebrated Library and Information Week. As part

of the celebrations they introduced us to author, comedian and primary school teacher, Oliver

Phommavanh, at St Francis Xavier School. As a comedian, Oliver has appeared on stage, and

on national TV (The NRL Footy Show) and radio. He has also appeared in numerous antholo-

gies such as Growing Up Asian in Australia, Funny Buggers, Trust Me Too and more recently in

the 2016 CBCA Notable Book, Rich and Rare.

Oliver shared his passion for writing and how he uses his everyday experiences to create the

plots for his stories. He engaged the students and staff with his humour and love of literacy for

a full hour. Nandana and Ashleigh were two of three students chosen to participate in cha-

rades using the Thai words.

Oliver did notice our big spider on the water tower and Ashleigh informed Oliver as to why the

spider is there. Oliver did think this could make a great story line - a footy team, spiders and a

water tower that he called a silo. He informed us to stay tuned to future books!

Thank you to the Federation Council for initiating these valuable learning opportunities for

our students.

Walk Safely to School Day

Walk Safely to School Day is an annual, national event in Aus-tralia in which primary school children are encouraged to walk or commute safely to school, an initiative of the Pedes-trian Council of Australia. It is held annually in May. To en-courage students to get to school safely we went on a walk first thing this morning, even if they had walked to school, to reinforce the road safety message and warm up with some healthy exercise and enjoy the fresh morning air!

Small Schools Cross Country

Next week on Wednesday 23rd of May, students from Mulwala, Lowesdale, Savernake and Jerilderie PS will join us to run the 2km and 3km courses around the our picturesque lake. All stu-dents K –6 will participate in this event with all students 8 years and older competing to qualify to represent the Small Schools at the zone cross country to be held at Urana on June 1st.

Please note: there is no catering for this event so students must bring their snacks, recess and lunch as well as a drink bottle. (There just might be a coffee van at the venue so parents can enjoy a coffee while encouraging the students to do their best!)

Power Outage

Wednesday 30th May for entire school day 8:30-3:30

We are currently looking into a whole school excursion to Wagga due to this power outage, it

just may be a little cold on a May day to be at school with no heating! More details to follow.

Library Bags—we really want the students to make good use of the literary resources we have in

our library. Please supply a library bag so students can borrow books, take them home and share

the stories with you.

Yr5/6 Bulletin

Last week with Mrs Ramos we have been learning about World War 1 and the ANZACs.

In conjunction with our Maths work on volume and capacity, we made ANZAC biscuits.

Originally the ANZAC biscuits were sent to the troupes in the war because they didn’t need to be

refrigerated. We are learning the Lee Kernaghan song ‘Spirit of the Anzacs” too.
