Naidoc Day

We enjoyed a wonderful day of country school hospitality when we travelled to Savernake for NAIDOC Day. Savernake, Urana, Jerilderie and Lowesdale combined for this learning experience. Mark Sadler shared his culture and heritage with the students who participated in a variety of ac-tivities including dance, art, storytelling, bush tucker and sport. Students gained a deeper under-standing and a healthy respect of ‘our’ land.

LUNCH DAY

The student leaders organised their first lunch last week. It proved to be successful—the pie, pri-ma and muffin was a real hit with students and staff.

Next lunch day Tuesday 23rd August

Spaghetti Bolognese/Prima $5.00

Finley Zone PSSA Athletics

Isabella, Cameron and Joseph represented UPS as part of the Small Schools Athletics team at the Finley Zone PSSA Athletics Carnival last Friday in events for which they qualified. Always stiff com-petition against students who are part of the strong Little Athletics scene, however our students aquitted themselves very well and gave it their all. Brayden was to have competed too but was sick on the day and couldn’t take his place.

CRUNCH AND SIP

The opportunity to snack on a piece of fruit or vegetable sticks and grab a drink of water has been a valuable addition to our morning routines. I encourage all students to bring along some fruit each day. We have been lucky enough to accept some donations of excess fruit which is readily eaten by the students but please make sure you bring some from home too, to ensure you have it.

SPORT

Students are enjoying the gymnastic sessions conducted by Flyaway Gymnastics from Albury. The students participate in a range of activities designed to develop balance, strength, agility and flexibility.

Next week we will begin tennis lessons. We will have 5 lessons this term with another 5 weeks early next term. The Whitehead Trust support has enabled us to offer this opportunity for the students. We will join with the students from St Francis for the lessons. These lessons will be on Wednesdays. Transition Yr6 into Yr 7 Both Oaklands and Lockhart CS will be offering an extensive transition program in Term 4 in readiness for the 2017 school year. Mr Peter Craft of Oaklands is keen to come over and catch up with prospective students and their parents over afternoon tea and Lockhart CS have sent through their preliminary information. Please see me about your expectations for your child so I can make the appropriate contact on your behalf.

LEAVE ARRANGEMENTS

Both Miss Bacchetto and myself will take some leave later this term. Mrs Dore - 25th August to 12th September— I will travel to Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay with my husband on a farming tour. Miss Bacchetto—8th September til the end of term—will travel with her extended family to Italy. Miss Bacchetto will take K-6 in my absence and I will take K-6 while Miss Bacchetto is away. Mrs Gleeson is looking forward to returning to UPS to cover a couple of days in between.

Dorothy Dore, Principal UPS

Education Week—Leaders Lunch

Mr Troy Mott, Director Public Schools NSW, hosted a Leaders Lunch at Finley High School during

Education Week. I took the current Year 6 School Leaders along to mix with like minded peers from

schools across the area. They participated in activities to promote leadership skills and worked in

groups to design safe landing gear to protect an egg. They could only use straws and masking tape

for this exercise ...and most groups experienced a successful landing!
