DR OLIVIER FLECHAIS IS CONVENING COURSES ON BEHALF OF DR JAMES NOLAN.

Dr James Nolan is an internationally renowned interpreting trainer, who is himself a professional AIIC interpreter. Dr Nolan’s AIIC combination is English A, French C, Spanish C*.James Nolan received his Juris Doctor degree with distinction (Woodrow Wilson Award for Profi ciency in Constitutional

Law) from New York Law School and is a graduate of the School of Translation and Interpretation of the University of

Geneva (Peter Price Translation Award). Dr. Nolan is admitted to the New York Bar and has practiced law in New York

City. He has worked as a linguist for several major New York fi rms, as Head of Linguistic Services of the International

Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, as UN Senior Interpreter, as Deputy Director of the UN Interpretation, Meetings and Publications Division, and as Chief of the

UN Verbatim Reporting Service. Dr. Nolan has taught in the United Nations interpreter training program and the interpreter training programs of Marymount

Manhattan College and New York University, and regularly conducts seminars on conference and court interpreting. He is a Court Interpreter Examiner for

the Consortium for State Court Interpreter Certifi cation and a consultant to the Canadian Forces Language School and the Canadian Language Industries

Association (AILIA). Dr. Nolan’s textbook Interpretation Techniques and Exercises is used for interpreter training at European and American universities and by

the European Parliament and the OECD Mission in Kosovo, and is cited as a study reference for the United Nations Interpreters’ Examination. *Applicants with

INTRODUCTION TO CONFERENCE INTERPRETING

In this course, offered at Honours level (NQF level 8), and aimed at interpreters and/or students who have passed

Principles and Practice of Interpreting, our aim is to improve students’ grasp of the principles and professional

practice which govern the interpreting profession in basic to intermediate conference interpreting contexts. Students

enhance their conference preparation techniques and terminology management, as well as improving their ability to

assess the interpreting process and apply interpreting coping tactics. Participants carry out conference interpreting

practice in the simultaneous mode (including simultaneous interpreting with text). Students who receive a Certifi cate

of Competence may receive credit for one module in the Honours in the fi eld of Translation (which consists of fi ve

modules in total), or a module in the MA in Interpreting.

SPECIALISED CONFERENCE INTERPRETING PRACTICE

This course is offered at Honours level (NQF level 8), and aimed at conference interpreters and/or students who

have passed Introduction to Conference Interpreting. We focus on the principles, norms and professional practice

governing the interpreting profession in intermediate to advanced conference interpreting contexts (which may

include at least two of the following: interpreting for business, conference interpreting in the South African context,

interpreting for the diplomatic service, interpreting for provincial and national legislatures (Parliament) and/or

conference interpreting in international contexts). Participants who receive a Certifi cate of

Competence may receive credit for one module in the Honours in the fi eld of Translation

(which consists of fi ve modules in total), or a module in the MA in Interpreting.
