THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USD is located on 180 acres overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego and the world famous San Diego Zoo. Historic Old Town is just minutes away as well. The city of San Diego along with this campus traces its origin to fifteenth century Spain. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid -Alcala de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a university, the University of Alcala, whose buildings became the inspiration for USD's style. Both institutions are located on a hill overlooking a river valley.

THE CAMPUS The USD campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique institutions in the country, featuring 34 major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renaissance style. Since 1999, USD has added

;l 1

more than 600,000 square feet of building space through numerous major construction and expansion projects. In 2000 the Jenny Craig Pavilion, a 5,100-seat athletic center, opened its doors as home to USD volleyball and basketball. In the fall of 2001, the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice opened on the west end of campus, and a new Science and Technology Center recently opened for the 2003-04 academic year. Manchester Village, a 101-unit apartment complex, opened its doors on the east end of campus in 2002. Most recently, the Degheri Alumni Center, a 28,000 square-foot three-story building located near the main campus entrance, had its grand opening in May 2004.

ACADEMICS USD enrolls more than 7,200 s tudents who have a choice of more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university's academic units include the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law, Nursing and Peace Studies. Class size generally averages between 15-25 students with the student to teacher ratio being 14:1. Over 97 percent of USD's full-time faculty hold doctorates. In the annual ratings of the country's colleges and universities, published by U.S. News & World Report, USD moved from the regional to national category in 1994. The universi ty now ranks among the top 100 schools in the nation.

STUDENT LIFE Student activities include cultural events, dances, boat cruises, beach parties, BBQ's, concerts, comedy nights, symposia and much more. Students participate in a wide range of volunteer projects such as adult literacy tutoring, senior citizen outreach, and house building in Tijuana. The intramural program is also an integral part of student life on campus with more than two-thirds of the USD community partaking in intramural sports.

ATHLETICS The Universi ty of San Diego is a member of the West Coast Conference for nearly all sports and competes in 16 intercollegiate sports on the NCAA Division I

level. The football team just completed its 11th season in the Pioneer Football League. Women's sports include: basketball, cross country, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball. Men's sports include: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, football, rowing, soccer and tennis. Since 1988, USD has had one national champion, one national team finalist, 17 conference team championships, 24 Conference Players of the Year, 32 Academic All-Americans, 33 Conference Coaches of the Year, 41 NCAA postseason appearances, four West Coast Conference Scholar Athletes of the Year and 35 AllAmerica selections.

TORERO OUTLOOK

USDSOCCER: A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE

Head Coach Ada Greenwood enters his second season at the helm of the USD women's soccer program. His 2004 Toreros are poised to carry on a tradition of excellence that has produced six straight winning seasons and five consecutive invitations to the NCAA Coll ege Cup Tournament. Since joining the USD staff, first as an assistant in 1998 and la ter assuming the head coaching role a year ago, Greenwood has been essential in guiding the Toreros to a six-year overall record of 69-38-9.

Greenwood and assistants Lucas Curtolo and Theresa Wagner must find a way to replace seven gradua ted seniors, including attacker Brenna Mullen (18 career goals) and starting goalkeeper Libby Bassett (14 career shutouts) . A proven core of re turning starters promise to have San Diego competing at a high level when the season begins at UCLA on August 27th_

San Diego has seven returning s tarters and a total of 13 returning letter winners. Marie-Claude Henry, Brooke Roby, Kaitlyn Pruett, and Andrea Keesling highlight an accomplished senior class, with all four earning All-WCC honors during their respective USD careers. Look for Pruett and Keesling to anchor a defense that posted five consecutive shutouts to begin the 2003 campaign. Keesling brings an amazing

string of 63 consecutive starts into the 2004 season, having played and started in all of USD's m atches since she arrived on the USD

campus in 2001. Pruett, who was an All-Pac-10 player a t USC earlier in her collegiate career, was named San Diego's 'Defensive MVP'

last season.

The Torero offense also returns its MVP from a year ago. Senior MarieClaude Henry put a team-high 15 shots on goa l as a junior, and was recognized as an All-WCC performer for her efforts in leading the Toreros into the N CAA Tournament. Classmate Brooke Roby has proven to be one of the best midfielders in the conference, having produced 31 career points as a three-year Torero starter. scoring in six consecutive matches as a freshman and on a number of occa

which was tied for the team lead .

A pair of sophom ore defenders, Brittany Young and Joslyn Williams, both started as true freshman. Young was awarded USD's

'Rookie of the Year' honors after starting in all of USD's 21 contests. Look for freshman Amy Epsten to make an immediate impact

offensively. Epsten, a coveted recruit who starred in the Surf club program, ranks second in San Diego County prep history with 138

goals. Newcomers Karen Cook, Alisha Ferrer and Kylie Taylor will compete for the vacant goalkeeping position.

O nce again the West Coast Conference p roved its

dominance on a national scale this p ast season with four teams qualifing for NCAA Tournament ac tion, with San ta Clara advancing to the final eight. Conference member Portland is one year removed from winning the Women's College Cup, the league's second national title in three years. In fact the NCAA Championship m atch in 2002 was an all WCC affair with Portland ousting Santa Clara in double overtime, denying the Broncos a second consecutive crown . Needless to say the WCC is regarded as one of the premiere soccer conferences in the United States. League members San Diego, Pepperdine, St. Mary's and Loyola Marymount have all received invitations to the NCAA College Cup Tournament in recent years. San Diego continued its traditi on of playing excellent soccer, making their fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament last season. USO was defeated in firs t round action by UCLA in Los Angeles. Three conference schools ended the season ranked in the NSCAA Top-25.

The WCC is proud to enter its 13th season of wom en 's soccer. Historically, four m ember team s h ave tas ted p os t- season pla y, with Santa Clara leading the way with 14 appearances, including ten NCAA semi-finals. Portland follows with ten trips, including seven appearances in the NCAA SemiFinals and the College Cup Title a season ago. The Pi lots adva nced to the Finals in 1995.

The University of San Diego has a ppeared in the NCAA Toumam en t six times, aiming for their s ixth s traight trip in 2004. Saint Mary's has qualified for the tournament three times, most recently ad vancing to the second round in

USD MAKES 5TH CONSECUTIVE POSTSEASON TOURNAMENT

by Amanda Piechowski

A new era began for the San Diego women's soccer program in 2003 when Ada Greenwood was elevated to the school's head coach after serving as USD's top assistant for the past five seasons. Assuming command of program rich in soccer tradition, Greenwood and his Toreros conquered one of the nation's most challenging schedules, reaching the NCAA College Cup Tournament for a school record fifth consecutive season.

San Diego started the 2003 campaign by dominating its first five opponents defensively, shutting out Long Beach State, UNLV, Northern Arizona, Vanderbilt and Oregon State. As the season progressed, so did the Toreros. USO defeated a pair of nationally ranked teams in the form of 20th-ranked Loyola Marymount and 12th-ranked Arizona State.

Brenna Mullen was honored in regional and national publications.Jar berslellar play in 2003.

The most pivotal moment of the year came with just two minutes remaining in the regular season. Trailing by a goal in the waning moments against the defending national champions and third ranked Pilots of Portland, Torero senior Brenna Mullen scored her team-leading sixth goal allowing San Diego a 2-2 tie. The comeback would send San Diego to the NCAA Tournament and Los Angeles to face the Pac-10 champs and nation's fourth-seed UCLA.

Despite a spirited effort against the Bruins, San Diego yielded a pair of

first half goals and lost by a final score of 2-0. The Toreros finish ed the 2003 season with an overall record of 9-8-4, with eight of USD's

20 opponents qualifying for postseason play.

The Torero defense, led by goalkeeper Libby Basse tt and defender's Alexis Obeji, Kaitlyn Pruett and Cristina Romero, was arguably the best in the West Coast Conference. As a team, USO allowed only 22 goals in 21 games, ranking first in the conference in goals against, with an average of 0.96 per match.

Five Toreros earned All-West Coast Conference honors after the end of regular season pla y. Junior's Kaitlyn Pruett and Marie Claude-Henry were selected to the West Coast Conference second team.

USO senior Brenna Mullen was named to the WCC's second team and was also chosen as a member of the Soccer Buzz National Elite Team of the Week for outstanding play during the weekend of October 3-5, scoring the game-winning goals against both Arizona and 12th-ranked Arizona State.

With eight shutouts in 2003, senior goalkeeper Libby Bassett received an All-West Coast Conference Honorable Mention recognition for her exceptional play and junior Brooke Roby was also a 2003 All-WCC Honorable Mention for the second straight season.

The tradition of soccer excellence at USO has brought the University national recognition that the entire campus community continues to enjoy. As Greenwood continues to build the Torero program as one of the nation 's best, the ensuing seasons promise to deliver Torero fans some of the best collegia te soccer the na tion has to offer.

Torero keeper Libby Bassett set a single-season saves record (94) in 2003 en route Lo shutting out eight dif/erent opponents.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT

ACADEMIC & STUDENT SERVICES

The USD Athletic Academic Support program is designed to promote the academic development of student-athletes. The primary objective is to offer the necessary resources for the academic success of student-athletes as they work to earn their degree. Academic Support services are designed to enhance the student-athlete's overall collegiate experience and encourage development and attainment of academic and career goals.

The University of San Diego's Academic Support efforts are led by Shaney Fink who is in her fifth year as USD's Assistant AD for Academic and Student Services. Fink was a standout volleyball player in the 90's, and in 1999 she was on the Volleyball coaching staff as an assistant, helping the Toreros to a 23-6 record and a second round finish in the NCAA Tournament. Prior to USD she gained coaching experience at the high school, college and international levels for five years. She capped off a stellar collegiate career (1990-93) at Cal Berkeley and won selection to the All-PAC Ten Decade Team. Fink completed her B.A., graduating in Social Science from Berkeley in 1994 and obtained a Master's Degree at USD in Counseling. Shaney and her husband, Tom Vorkoper, reside in Encinitas and just gave birth to their first child .

All USD student athletes have access to advising, tutoring and mentoring services.

25

The mentoring program, Access, was developed in 1999 and teams a graduate student in the Counseling program with an athlete who would like to enhance study skills, learn about campus resources and receive guidance on goal development and attainment. Studentathletes also have access to a quiet area where they can study or work in the computer center. In addition, student-athletes are encouraged to utilize the campus learning centers including the Writing, Math and Logic Centers as well as to take advantage of the resources available to them in the Career Center, Counseling Center and Computer Labs.

USD is a member of the NCAA CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS program. This program was created to enhance the total development of student athletes on NCAA Division 1 campuses.

The NCAA Champs/Life Skills Mission is: To maintain intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the campus educational program and the athlete as an integral part of the student body. With this in mind, the CHAMPS Life Skills program was created to support the student development initiatives of its member institutions and to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the universihJ setting.

"The greatest challenge to a Division I athlete is to balance the demands of sport while taking fu ll advantage of the educational experience offered. The purpose of our program is to assis t studen tathletes in meeting this challenge by offering tutoring, advising, mentoring and a quiet environment to study. The academic support program is designed to assis t students in adjusting to life at USD and developing sound academic and career plans. By promoting a philosophy of individual responsibility, which encourages each student-athlete to value their educational experience, the academic support program assists each athlete to realize their full potential. " Shaney Fink

SAN DIEGO 'AMERICA'S FINEST CITY' 28

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA

San Diego is truly "America's Finest City." A modern metropolis (second largest in California) and a popular year-round resort, San Diego spreads from the coast to the desert, including cliffs, mesas, hills, canyons and valleys. San Diego also surrounds one of California's greatest natural harbors, which has been a dominant fac tor in determining the city's history, economy and development.

Meteorologists claim San Diego as the country's onl y area with perfect climate. This ideal year-round environment posts an average daytime temperature of 70 degrees, with an a1mual rainfall average of less than 10 inches. Most days are sunny, with humidity generally low, even in the summer. The climate, attractive setting and recreational facilities make San Diego "America's Finest City."

According to Sports Illustra ted, "For sheer numbers of participants, diversity of pursuits of involvement, San Diego must rank as the sports fitness capital of the U.S." Sports are a major feature of the San Diego lifestyle. One can sail, swim,

surf, scuba dive, snorkel, wind-surf on 70 miles of public beach or golf at any of the over 80 golf courses throughout the county. Balboa Park, a 1, 158-acre recreation and cu ltu ral center, offers 25 tennis courts, two gymnasiums, two municipal golf courses, and one of the nation's finest zoos . Mission Bay Park is a 4,600-acre playground for jogging, fishing, bicycling, tennis, golf, jet skiing and kite flying.

As well as participating in recreational activities, San Diego supports its professional teams - the NFL Chargers and the National League Padres play at Qualcomm Stadium. During college football bowl week, San Diego annually hosts the Holiday Bowl. During 1998, Qualcomm Stadium hosted the Super Bowl game between Denver and Green Bay, and the World Series between San Diego and New York Yankees. Whatever sporting activity there is, it's here in San Diego - the sports capital of the U.S.A.
