Greetings from the University Honors Program! A cold winter at Indiana State will (hopefully) loosen its hold very soon, and our spring semester is well into its second month. It is the time of the academic year when we in the Honors Program watch students prepare to transition to new stages of their lives and careers, when they begin to seize the opportunities that they have earned through hard work and planning. First-year students are rising to the call of leadership on campus for the first time, perhaps as officers in an organization or peer mentors. Sophomore and juniors are refining their resumes with study abroad, research and internships. Seniors look forward, to graduation, graduate school and careers. It is the time of year when many letters of recommendation are being written, and all the wonderful experiences that students have undertaken are brought to the forefront of our attention. It is also a time when many of our scholarships are being awarded to the best and brightest, and I am reminded how hopeful our future will be, with such students as tomorrow’s leaders. During this academic year, I have been very proud of the diverse set of programs for Honors students, pertaining to careers, library research and scholarships, that have been developed and coordinated by Laura Froelicher. The Rhoads Hall Honors center has been home to these workshops, and also, recently, to a collection of student art. The art gallery will feature a new collection for display each academic year. Rachel Purpura’s fine suite of paintings, Journey, will remain as a permanent exhibit, specifically commissioned for the Honors center. Honors students have been incredibly engaged in the campus and beyond; please read the exciting commentaries from those involved in research and studying abroad. JEFFREY TOOBIN On November 24, 2008, Honors students had an opportunity to meet with CNN Senior Analyst Jeffrey Toobin. Toobin came to ISU as a part of the University Speaker Series. Prior to his speech in Tilson Auditorium, he spent an hour speaking more informally in the Rhoads Hall Honors Lounge and answered student questions about the media’s role in the 2008 presidential election and his job at CNN.

HONORS SCHOLARSHIPS The University Honors Program annually awards three scholarships to help Honors students in good standing fund their academic endeavors. These include: • The Richard J. Brett Memorial Scholarship for Study Abroad • The Anne Bauer Jackson M.D. Honors Book Scholarship • The Rebecca A. Johnson Honors Program Award for Nursing Students Scholarship applications are accepted in the Honors Office on the Rhoads Hall Mezzanine until Friday, February 27 at 4:30pm. Recipients will be announced at the Honors banquet in April.

CAREER PREPARATION WORKSHOP SERIES This academic year, the University Honors Program has partnered with the ISU Career Center and other offices on campus to offer a series of workshops designed to help Honors students find scholarships and begin preparing for job and graduate school applications. The workshops have covered the following topics: • How to apply for graduate schools • How to search for scholarship opportunities at ISU • How to write an effective résumé and cover letter • How to interview for a job In March, we will host a final workshop for this school year regarding how to apply for prestigious scholarships, such as the Rhodes, Marshall, and Fulbright awards, which many Honors students are eligible for. More information about this program will be posted to the Honors website as it becomes available.

ALPHA LAMBDA DELTA Alpha Lambda Delta is a National Honor Society that recognizes students who excel academically during their first year of college. To be eligible, students must earn a 3.5 or higher GPA and be in the top 20 percent of their class. This year, over 150 freshmen joined the Indiana State chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta! Benefits of joining include recognition of academic achievements and eligibility for scholarship opportunities through the national organization. ISU inductees will be recognized at a banquet in April.

OPPORTUNITIES IN HONORS RELAY FOR LIFE The University Honors Student Association (UHSA) and President’s Scholars Association (PSA) are joining forces this Spring for the American Cancer Society’s 2009 Relay for Life. Relay for Life is an annual event that occurs all across the country to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those lost to the disease, and raise money for cancer research. Team members take turns walking or running around a track, and try to keep at least one person on the track at all times. Relay for Life will take place on the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology campus from 6:00pm on Friday, April 3 until 6:00am on Saturday, April 4. The team goal is to raise between $500 and $1000, and team members can set their own individual fundraising goals of $100 or more. To sign up, visit the Relay for Life website (www.relayforlife.org) and search for the “ISU UHSA” team. Additionally, the ISU UHSA team is looking for a tent to use for team members to rest in when they’re not walking. If you have a tent, or have any questions, please contact team captain Ashley Walters at [email protected].

SYMPOSIUM: CELEBRATION OF STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP All undergraduate and graduate students are invited to submit their scholarly work for consideration as entries in the 2009 Symposium: Celebration of Student Scholarship on April 8, 2009 at Cunningham Memorial Library. This event will feature the research and creative efforts of our finest students in a format intended to share ideas and achievements across all units of the University and thematic areas of interest. The Symposium: Celebration of Student Scholarship was formerly the ISU Undergraduate/Graduate Research Showcase. The Symposium: Celebration of Student Scholarship will be conducted as a combined poster session and set of creative performances. Traditional research projects will be exhibited as posters in a common space in the Cunningham Memorial Library and attended by the respective student authors, who will have the opportunity to engage fellow students, faculty and other visitors on questions about the design and findings of their work. For a selected period during the celebration, students in the creative and performing arts will be the focus of attention during a series of poetry and short fiction readings.

Who May Participate? All undergraduate and graduate students with a high level research or creative project are strongly encouraged to apply for admission to the Symposium: Celebration of Student Scholarship program. Student work should be accompanied by a letter of endorsement from a faculty mentor or graduate advisor, endorsing the submission and attesting to the quality of the work within its respective field. Formats of Entries Formal research projects should be described as completely as possible in an abstract of 250 words or less. The abstract should provide a capsule view of the research questions or hypotheses and their relevance within the field, the data and procedures used, and the key findings of the project. Research projects in all fields of systematic thought, including the natural, technological and health sciences, social sciences, history, as well as critical analyses in the arts and humanities, are welcome. Posters for exhibition must fit a display board of dimensions 4x3 feet and should be fastened to sturdy backing (tables or stands will be provided). Creative work in the form of short fiction/non-fiction or poetry should be submitted as complete work. Excerpts or complete works of up to 500 words will be selected to be read aloud. When and How to Submit Abstracts and creative submissions must be received for consideration by March 2, 2009. Please send the text of your submission imbedded in an email message with the subject heading: 2009 Symposium – Abstract, for formal research posters, or 2009 Symposium – Creative, for poetry or short-fiction/non-fiction, to [email protected]. Faculty endorsements of student work should be sent as a hard-copy letter to Nicole Christlieb, Rhoads Hall Mezzanine, Indiana State University, Terre Haute, Indiana, 47809.

Students will be notified of the acceptance of their submission by March 16, 2009.

On December 8, 2008, the University Honors Program celebrated the opening of the Rhoads Hall Art Gallery, located in the Honors Lounge. Honors will be annually hosting a Juried Art Exhibition, featuring work from Indiana State University students. This is an opportunity for students to both display and sell their work. The current exhibition will run from December 8, 2008 - April 21, 2009. If you are interested in having your work displayed in the Rhoads Hall Gallery, please visit the gallery page on the Honors website (listed below) and view the call for entries for the 2009-2010 show. Submissions will be accepted until September 11, 2009.

This April, Honors Student and Sophomore Chemistry major Logan Fulford will have the opportunity to present his oncology research at the 23rd National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) in La Crosse, WI. NCUR was designed especially for the presentation of undergraduate research endeavors and students from all fields of study are eligible to participate. The 2009 conference will take place from April 16-18. Logan will be giving a 35 minute presentation entitled "Analysis of Lumican Function in Prostate Adenocarcinoma" about his work trying to isolate the effects of a series of biochemicals that alter the amount of blood vessels that can enter a tumor. Preventing blood from entering a tumor can help prevent the growth and spread of cancer. Logan is a McNair Scholar at Indiana State, and is currently assisting with oncology research under Dr. Alan Albig, Assistant Professor of Life Sciences at ISU.

HONORS STUDENTS ABROAD

KAELYNN HAYES Junior, History major Studying in Ormskirk, England “This semester, I am studying abroad in England at Edge Hill University in a small northwestern town called Ormskirk, which is near Liverpool and Manchester in the northwestern part of the country. I chose this location because I have always wanted to travel to England. Plus, my major is history, and there are plenty of historical landmarks in and around England.”

CASEY CLARK Sophomore, Business major Studying in Milan, Italy “I am attending the Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, Italy. Ever since I visited Messina, Rome, and Florence two summers ago, I knew I wanted to study abroad somewhere in Italy. Through an exchange program called ISEP, I decided to study in Milan because I wanted to live in an ancient city filled with culture and history. I also liked how Milan is located in the northern part of Italy.”

There are many benefits to studying abroad as an Honors student: • Automatically earn Honors credit

for your classes abroad (and with the new Honors curriculum, effective Fall 2009, studying abroad will partly fulfill the requirements for the Global Perspectives track)

• Gain valuable life skills while accepting the challenge of living in a different culture

• Add your experience abroad to your resume and impress prospective employers or graduate schools

• Acquire useful language skills, meet new friends, and explore the history of another country

• Honors annually awards a scholarship to help Honors students pay for expenses abroad

If you are interested in more information about studying abroad, please contact Janis Halpern, Coordinator for Academic Programs Abroad, at (812) 237-3427or [email protected].

THE QUEST FOR DEMOCRACY Honors students enrolled in GH301E: The Quest for Democracy course are spending the Spring 2009 semester exploring the development of democracy from it’s roots in ancient Greek and Roman culture. In May, they will embark on a three week tour of Greece, Rome, and Washington D.C. to see in person the places where democratic governing was initiated and hopefully gain a deeper understanding of the ancient roots of modern democracy.

To read updates about Kaelynn’s and Casey’s semester abroad, as well as updates from other Honors students in Italy and Japan, visit: http://www.indstate.edu/honors/spotlight/studyabroad/students.htm
