What are some things/objects that you can measure?
What are some tools you might use to measure an object?
Why do we measure objects?
MEASUREMENT
Scientist around the world need a universal way of
communicating accurately.
They need a system of measurement that is the
same around the world.
WHY DO WE NEED AN UNIVERSAL WAY OF MEASURING?
The diameter of a sphere is the length across the
sphere.
WHAT IS DIAMETER?
Mass: the property that describes the amount of
material something has in it. The amount of matter
in an object.
Which has more mass? Use polling tools.
A.) golf ball
B.) ping pong ball
Why?
WHAT IS MASS?
The distance between two
points affects how they
react to each other.
The gravitational attraction
between two objects is
greater when they are closer
together.
DISTANCE BETWEEN TWO OBJECTS
Mass, Distance, Time- are quantifiable properties because
they can be expressed in a number.
Measurement allows you to determine a value precisely.
Measurement: is the comparison to a standard unit. Without
comparison to a Standard Unit, it is not considered
measurement.
MEASUREMENT
The United States uses the U.S.
Customary System of Measurement.
Example: cups, feet, inches…
In 1875, people from 17 countries
agreed to use metric units to
communicate with each other.
International System of Units (SI) : the
metric system of physical quantities.
Used among scientist to be able to
share data and information
universally.
SI
There are 7 base units in the SI.
What unit would you use to
measure distance?
What unit would you use to
measure mass?
What unit would you use to
measure time?
SI TABLE
What SI (metric) unit would
you use to measure the height
of the tree?
What SI (metric) unit would
you use to measure the mass
of the tree?
WHICH UNITS WOULD YOU USE?
What SI units would you use for
the light bulb?
WHICH UNITS WOULD YOU USE?
