THE ANOINTING WITH HOLY OIL

On solemn Holydays, the faithful of the Byzantine Rite are anointed with holy oil andreceive a piece of bread blessed for this sacramental on the vigil-Litija of the feast. ("Litija,"the name taken from the Greek "life" meaning an earnest prayer or supplication.)

In the Middle Ages, when monastic services were introduced into the parish churches, thevigil services were considerably shortened and the repast was omitted. Consequently, the

prayer for the blessing of the food for the repast was modified into a prayer for a goodharvest with wheat added to the food to be blessed. Thus, since the fourteenth century,bread, wheat, wine and oil are usually blessed at Litija.

Since the Apostles "anointed many sick people with oil and cured them" (Mk. 6:13), theChristians considered blessed oil as having the divine power of healing. This was also trueof the Saints. St. Jerome (d. 420) testifies that "many bitten by serpents had recourse to St.Hilarion who touched their wounds with consecrated oil and they recovered." (of. St.Jerome, Life of St. Hilarion, oh. 32)

The service of Litija is usually celebrated after Vespers on the vigil of the more solemnFeastdays of the Church. After the impetrative ekteny, while the faithful sing the specialSticheras of Litija, the celebrant proceeds in procession to the entrance of the church. Afterthe completion of the sticheras, he intones various petitions to which the people respondwith a multiple (12 times) "Lord, have mercy." Following this, while the faithful sing theSticheras with Versicles, the celebrant and his assistants proceed to the Tetrapod uponwhich a Litija tray, called "Litijnik" is placed containing five loaves of bread (prosphora), adish of wheat, a glass of wine and a glass of oil in preparation for the blessing.

During the chanting of the festive Troparion, which is taken three times, the celebrantincenses the tetrapod from all four sides three times and takes the Prayer of the Blessing ofthe Bread. The Mohylian Liturgikon (Kiev 1629) contains the following remark: "Be it knownthat the bread which has been blessed (at Litija) preserves people against all kind of evil ifit is taken with faith." Concerning the foods blessed at Litia, the

Liturgikon admonishes the priest to: 1. Use the blessed oil for the anointing of the people asthey come (at the conclusion of the services) to kiss the icon of the feast; 2. Consume thewine with reverence since it is blessed; 3. Cut the bread into pieces and give it to thepeople as ‘antidoron,’ 4. Preserve the wheat for sowing, or make flour from it."

"Myrovania" or the anointing of the faithful takes place at the end of the services as thefaithful approach for the "veneration (kissing) of the icon of the Feast," which is usuallydisplayed on the tetrapod. "Standing at the side of the tetrapod and holding a container withholy oil," the priest "blesses the people by anointing their forehead." (of. Goar, Fuchologionp. 7-8)As the priest anoints the forehead of the faithful in the form of the cross, he greets themwith the words, "Christ is among us!" to which they reply, "He is and He shall be!"During the Christmas season, the priest greets the faithful with the words, "Christ is

born!" and the people answer "Glorify Him!" During the Easter season, the customarygreeting used is "Christ is Risen!" and the response is "Indeed He is Risen!"

The Church teaches that in conferring her blessings (sacramentals) on the faithful, theirfaith plays an essential role in their efficacy as confirmed by our Divine Savior, "Daughter,your faith has restored you to health." (Mk. 5, 34) By tracing the sign of the cross on theforehead during the anointing, the priest indicates that all divine favors come to us throughthe salvific power of Christ, Who continues to be present with His Church, since "Christ isamong us!" (Mt. 18, 20) And the faithful, in turn express their faith in Christ’s presence andassistance by answering, "He is and He shall be."

After the veneration of the icon of the feast and the anointing, the faithful receive a piece ofthe bread (prosphora) blessed at the Litija which, if they "consume (it) with faith gives themmany graces, health, and other (spiritual) goods." (of. Simeon of Thes., On Holy Prayer, oh.342) The blessed bread is a symbol of Christ, the "Living Bread" (Jn. 6, 51), Who gives usboth physical and spiritual life. Consuming this bread "with faith" we express our trust inChrist that He will provide us with the necessary food for our body (referring to themultiplication of the bread in the prayer of blessing) and all the graces needed for thesalvation of our immortal soul. (Jn. 6:5; 51)

In times gone by, when people seemed to have a stronger faith and greater trust in God,they were healthier, stronger and much happier. They relied more on God’s blessings evenfor their physical health than on medicines and drugs. They believed that "all things werepossible to him who had faith" (Mk 9, 23) and they also believed in the power of"Myrovania." Do we possess such an all-encompassing faith in God? Can we regain sucha strong and deep trust in God? We must try!

The next time we come for "Myrovania—to be anointed on our forehead with blessed oil—let us remember that through the holy oil Christ’s healing power is touching us. Let us alsoremember that by taking the blessed bread (antidoron) we come closer to Jesus Christ, our"Living Bread," who indeed "gives life to the world." (Jn. 6:33) And let us firmly profess ourfaith in Christ’s presence among us by answering in an audible voice. "He is and He shallbe."

«Мені часто доводиться чути запитання: якою я бачу майбутню Україну? Коли вже закінчитьсяперіод переходу від радянської дійсності?

Якою могла б бути відроджена Україна, можна обговорювати. Можна теж роздумувати, якою вонаповинна бути. Але не так легко сказати, якою вона буде. Автор цих рядків не сумнівається, щоУкраїнська Держава після довгих періодів поневолення, після завзятих змагань і багатьох жертвтаки буде. Та якою вона буде? Якщо слухати політиків-популістів, то вона буде такою, що кращоїсобі годі уявити. Одначе якщо об’єктивно оцінити те, що чинять відповідальні особи, тодочекаємося, навпаки, чогось дуже малого.

Якою буде наша рідна Україна – залежить від нас, від кожного з нас. Що маю на думці? Усезалежить від того, скільки добра ми бажаємо всім громадянам нашої Батьківщини і скільки зусильготові докласти, щоб те всенародне благо стало дійсністю. Не милозвучні слова, а конкретніпозитивні вчинки – це основа відповіді на поставлене запитання. Іншими словами: Україна будетакою, якою ми її зробимо. Хочу підкреслити – ми, усі ми, на служінні правди, добра і краси.

Кожний громадянин повинен старатися якнайкраще виконувати свої завдання. При цьому слідпам’ятати, що кожний із нас також неповторний і має особливі таланти: те, що може зробити однаособа, не зробить за неї ніхто інший. Отже, якщо людина не виконає свого життєвого завдання, незробить того, що тільки вона може зробити, то це завдання буде не виконаним. Цю думку прекрасносформулював наш поет Іван Франко: "Кожний думай, що на тобі мільйонів стан стоїть, що за долюмільйонів мусиш дати ти одвіт".

Тож шановні й дорогі брати і сестри, хоч би ким ми були, виконуймо своє життєве завдання,здійснюймо те добро, якого прагнемо для себе і для всіх. І тоді Україна нашого майбутнього будедля нас справжньою Батьківщиною.

Усе сказане вище цілком самозрозуміле. Хтось зауважить, що це все теорія суспільного життя, зякою важко не погодитися. Проте шановні й дорогі читачі, я готовий проілюструвати (принаймні взагальному) практичний бік наших змагань, бо завжди існує та небезпека, що ми, захопившисьтеорією, недобачаємо практики. Відразу хочу натякнути, що практика – це ми.

Так сталося, що через несприятливі життєві обставини в нашому народі з’явився небувалийжертовний дух. Його носіями стали воїни-добровольці та волонтери. Відбулося те, чим справдіможна захоплюватися. Але в цьому прихована певна небезпека: дивлячись на героїв, ми, пересічнігромадяни, забуваємо про власну - може, не таку героїчну - роль у розбудові великої держави.Немає сумніву, що досягнення і служіння вищезгаданих жертовних людей дуже важливе і цінне длянашого дальшого розвитку.

Однак, хочу наголосити, це не все. Крім них, майбутню Україну, якою будемо пишатися, мусятьбудувати також і так звані пересічні громадяни. Хто вони, наведу кілька прикладів: суддя, якийпильно захищає права громадян; сумлінний поліцейський, який дбає про безпеку громадян;викладач, який заохочує студентів до інтелектуальної роботи; вчителька, яка дає відчути учням, яківони для неї важливі та які їй дорогі; працівник міської ради, який сумлінно готує потрібні документидля співгромадян; підприємець, який використовує тільки якісну сировину для приготуванняпродовольчих продуктів; водій, який належно готується сам і готує свій транспорт, щоб безпечноперевозити пасажирів; двірник, який дбає, щоб вулиці його міста були чисті, тощо. Особливо требаще згадати тих, які чесно і пунктуально платять податки. При цьому – жодних хабарів.

Якщо представники перелічених професій та інші громадяни нашої Батьківщини будуть мати щиребажання чесно працювати – майбутнє Української Держави є більше ніж запевнене.

“З празником Господнього Богоявлення тісно пов'язане Велике, або йорданськеводосвяття. Ця священна традиція Східної Церкви сягає перших віків християнства.Протягом століть витворилися різні обряди великого освячення води святихБогоявлінь. Наш народ з давніх-давен йорданське водосвяття дуже любить, вірить увелику силу освяченої йорданської води та зберігає її у хатах, як велику святість”.

Від найдавніших часів Східна Церква вважає освячену йорданську воду за великусвятість та приписує їй чудодійну силу для душі й тіла. Святий Йоан Золотоустий упроповіді на празник Богоявлення каже: "У цей празник опівночі всі, зачерпнувшиводи, приносять її додому і зберігають увесь рік... І діється дивне явище: та вода усвоїй істоті не псується від довготи часу, але зачерпнута сьогодні, вона через цілийрік, а часто і два і три роки зостається незіпсована і свіжа. І по такім довгім часі вонатака, як і вода, щойно взята з джерела". Грецька Церква для йорданської води маєназву велика "агіязма", тобто велика святість.Колись давно у Церкві був звичай давати пити йорданську воду тим, кого через якусьпровину не допущено до святого причастя. Наш народ ставився до йорданської води зтакою великою набожністю, що аж до її освячення зберігав строгий піст і приймав їїнатще, наче причащаючись. Наші вірні кропили йорданською водою всі свої будинкий ціле обійстя, щоб відігнати від свого господарства всяку нечисту силу. І сьогоднівони радо вітають у своїх домах священика, який щорічно благословить і освячує їх іїхні доми йорданською водою.

Віру нашої Східної Церкви в силу і благословення йорданської води найкращевіддзеркалює зміст молитов та обрядів великого водосвяття. У тих молитвах багаторазів призиваємо Святого Духа, щоб Він зійшов, очистив і освятив воду та надав їйлікувальної сили з користю для душі й тіла. Велика єктенія під час освячення водимає аж 26 прохань, де є такі слова: "Щоб освятилися води ці силою, діянням ізішестям Святого Духа"; "Щоб на води ці сходило очищальне діяння пресущноїТройці"; "Щоб була їм дарована благодать ізбавлення, благословення Йорданове,силою і діянням і зішестям Святого Духа"; "Щоб ми просвітилися просвіченням розумуі благочестя зішестям Святого Духа"; "Щоб вода ця стала даром освячення,ізбавленням від гріхів, на зцілення душі і тіла, і на всяку особливу користь"; "Щоббула вона на очищення душ і тілес усім, що з вірою черпають і причащаються нею".Гарні за своїм глибоким змістом молитви йорданського водосвяття величаютьПресвяту Тройцю і просять Святого Духа, щоб зійшов і сам освятив воду. Тутпідкреслюється значення, сила та святість йорданського водосвяття. Ось дещо з тихмолитов: "Днесь йорданські води перетворюються на цілющі Господнім пришестям...Днесь людські гріхи йорданськими водами обмиваються. Днесь рай відкриваєтьсялюдям і сонце правди осяюється нам... Днесь ми ізбавилися від давнього ридання і,як новий Ізраїль, спаслися. Днесь ми від тьми визволилися і світлом богорозумінняозорюємося... Днесь світлом просвічується все створіння... Сам, отже, чоловіколюбчеЦарю, прийди і нині зішестям Святого Твого Духа, і освяти воду оцю. І дай їйблагодать ізбавлення, благословення Йорданове, сотвори її джерелом нетління, даромосвячення, розрішенням гріхів, зціленням недуг, погубною для демонів, для су-противних сил неприступною, ангельської сили сповненою, щоб усі, що черпають іпричащаються, мали її на освячення душ і тілес, на зцілення від терпінь, на освяченнядомів, і на всякий особливий пожиток... BLESSING OF THE WATER AND THE SANCTIFICATION OF HOMES

Among the various petitions mentioned in the ceremony during the blessing of thewater is the sanctification of homes. With this the Church imposes a duty andobligation upon the priests to bless the homes of the faithful entrusted to theirpastoral care at the beginning of the New Year. Theologically speaking, the blessingof homes constitutes an invocative blessing, meaning that by his prayer and bythe sprinkling of the Holy Water the priest invokes God’s protection upon the homeand those living in it.

As our souls, so also our homes become tainted by the sins of those living in themand, consequently, lose God’s protective power. Every year, then, at the Feast ofthe Epiphany, they should be blessed again to secure for them God’s blessings and

protection. Just as the faithful cleanse their soul of sin at least ONCE A YEAR, and the church is blessedwith the newly blessed water every year, so should the homes of the faithful be yearly blessed to invokeGod’s blessings and protection on it and its inhabitants. As we renew the insurance on our homeevery year, so we should renew our insurance of God’s protection and his blessing which is of greaterimportance and more effective. As we welcome our priest during the holy season of Epiphany to blessour home, let us be mindful that he is bringing to us the "blessing of Jordan," and that unless God protectand bless our home, we "labor in vain." (Ps. 127:1)

at its rising and have come to pay him homage.” At this news King Herod became greatly disturbed,

and with him all Jerusalem. Summoning all of the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired

if them where the Messiah was to be born. “In Bethlehem of Judea,” they informed him. “Here is what

the prophet had written: ‘And you, Bethlehem, land of Judea, are by no means least among the princes

of Judah, since from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.’” Herod called the

astrologers aside and found out from them the exact time of the star’s appearance. Then he sent them

to Bethlehem, after having instructed them: “Go and get detailed information about the child. When

you have found him, report it to me so that I may go and offer him homage too.” After their audience

with the king, they set out. The star which they have observed at its rising went ahead of them until it

came to a standstill over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and

on entering the house, found the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him

homage. Then they opened their coffers and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

They received a message in a dream not to return to Herod, so they went back to their own country

by another route.
