1. Introduction This document is meant for the Huawei Technical Services Department. It has been written to guide new users of the Atoll Software when making a CDMA2000 Network Simulation.

Please note that above are just the brief descriptions about the operations. For more details, please refer to the Atoll User Manual.

2. Creating a new project

Click on button in start – all programs – atoll to launch the software.

Click on new – this command will open a dialog box to choose which kind of prediction you want to make.

Select CDMA2000 1xRTT 1xEVDO and Click OK

o This will open up the project window

3. Importing the area map Click on File Click on import from the drop down menu.

Clicking import will open up a dialog box and locate where the supported files are located.

Click on one of the folders and select the index file and click open.

Clicking Open will bring this dialog box:

Select: Clutter classes for clutter index file Altitudes for Height index file Vectors for the vector index file

Note: We do not need to import the ortho index fileRepeat this process for all the folders

After this operation, you will need to select the coordinate system for the project.

Click on Tools Select Options from the drop down menu

From the resultant dialog box,

Click on the coordinates tab Click on the browse button corresponding to Projection

From the resultant dialog box, Select the particular zone for the map in use. In “Find”, drop down the list and select the particular UTM ZoneExample: For our work, we select WGS84 UTM Zone.

Selecting the UTM Zone will populate the table. Select the appropriate region based on the coordinate location.

For example, Uganda lies in the WGS84 UTM Zone 30degEast to 36degEast Northern Hemisphere.

Clicking OK will take you back to the Options dialog box

4. Importing the DataNote: In this section, one needs to import data from excel tables so as to make work easier. Each excel table must match the destination Atoll table.

On the explorer window, Click on the Data tab Right click on the Sites folder – a drop down menu will appear Select Equipment Then select Open Table

A table will appear on the project window “Document1:Site Table”

Right clicking on the table, a pop up menu appears – the menu gives several options and one can try any of them to see how they work. But initially, only a few are available.

Select display column – this open up dialog box that allows you to select the columns you wish to display.

Select the tables by checking the check boxes for each of the columns you want displayed.

Copy the values and paste them on the Atoll corresponding tableJust copy the values in the excel table and paste them on the Atoll table by simply highlighting the row and pasting using CTRL+V or by right clicking on the column and selecting paste.

NB: The following section of the document has operations that are similar to the above explained. So I will just provide screenshots of the tables required for Atoll and the corresponding excel tables.

Then Expand terminals (check the contents)

If the particular terminal does not exist, right click on the terminals folder Click on new and enter values for the new terminal.

5. Setting up transmitter properties. Right Click on transmitter Select properties

The properties window opens up

The general tab - shows general information that need to be added to the transmittersIt does not influence our work therefore they can be left as default.

Table Tab – displays the fields already defined for the transmitter. They cannot be edited. But one can add fields to it.

Global Parameters – allows user to input values for the parameters, frequency, carriers, spreading width, Interferences and Handoff.Adjust the parameters according to your requirements.

Propagation – this window allows one to select the Propagation Model based on the frequency

used for the network. It also allows the user to change the vakue for the transmission radius of the transmitter and the resolution of the map in use.

Station Templates – allows users to select the particular user environments for the prediction. The environments have been defined under CDMA/CDMA2000 Parameters.

Display – allows the user to select the display option for the transmitters in the simulation map.

6. Creating the computation zone. On the Menu bar, Click on Tools. From the resultant drop down window, select Computation zone. Click on draw.

With the draw tool, draw a computation zone around the sites to be simulated.

7. Setting up Neighbors. Right click on Transmitters Select Cell Select Neighbors Click on Automatic Allocation

A window opens up:

An event viewer window opens up and one can check the progress of the neighbor allocation. When it completes, click on close.Then click on commit in the automatic neighbor window.

Click on close to exit the window.

8. Making a CDMA2000 1xRTT Prediction Right click on Prediction and select new

A new window opens up – (Study Window) allows one to select the study type to base the prediction.

Note: The study types enclosed with the red box can be predicted directly.

But for the study types enclosed in blue, an environment map must be built first in order to make the predictions.

Example 1:We will make a prediction based on Coverage by signal.

SolutionStep 1: Select coverage by signal from the study window as show in the previous screen.

Then Click OK.Step 2: A properties window opens up

Under Display tab, adjust the values based on your desired results.

Under Condition tab adjust the parameters as desired but they can be left as default

Under General, input general properties for the prediction but they may be left as default.

Step 3: Click apply and then OK to exit this window.Step 4: Expand the predictions folder – the new prediction will have been added.Step 5: Right click on the new prediction.

From the pop – up menu, Click on calculate

An event will show the progress of the prediction calculation.

After the calculation completes, the prediction can be seen in the document pane.One can close all other windows to see the prediction clearly or can zoom in.

To view the legend, Click on view then select Legend window.

Step 6: One can add a grid to show the area of coverage of a particular site.Right Click on the site in the mapClick on Grid

A window opens up to allow you adjust the maximum radius, circle spcing and angle interval.

The grid will appear as shown below in the screen shot.

Example 2:Making a prediction based on Service area (Eb/Nt) downlink.

SolutionTo make the prediction, procedure is the same as that of the Coverage by Signal.But the only difference is one has to create the environment map.

Step 1: repeat steps 1 to 4 for the coverage by signal.Under step two, adjust the parameter values accordingly.

Under Simulation tab select the simulation already built (if there is any), then select the carrier, mobility, service and terminal that will be used for the prediction.

Under general, it is the same as that of Coverage by signal.Step 5: Click on Geo Tab

Right Click on CDMA/CDMA2000 Traffic and click new.

A window will open up that allows you to choose the map type.Select Based on environment (Raster) and click on Create Map.

Click on the combo box marked in red to choose the data that you wish to use for the prediction

Use this tool to draw the environment map. Just draw along the computation zone.Step 2: Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the coverage by signal.

9. Saving the Image To save the image, select the whole area and Export it to paint or any other picture viewer.

Click on file and select export image

From the resultant dialog window, save the image as a .bmp file. Open it in paint or any other picture viewer.

10. Making a CDMA2000 EVDO PredictionThe procedure is the same as for the one of 1xRTT prediction but with a few changes.If you have a CDMA2000 project with 1xEVDO carrier, you can create the CDMA 1xEVDO predictions by the following procedure: Select a prediction, e.g. Pilot reception analysis (Ec/Io), then set the parameters in the Simulation tab

as shown in below the screenshot:

Note that you have to select the 1xEVDO carrier (All or a specific carrier) first, then you will have the 1xEVDO Data in the Service option.

The predictions in the red rectangle are those that can generate the 1xEVDO plot by the operation given above.

Before you generate the 1xEVDO prediction plot, you have to accomplish the following operations:(a) Specify the 1xEVDO carrier in the Global Parameters tab of Transmitter properties

(b) Then define the power of each 1xEVDO cell in the Cells table

(c) Define the 1xEVDO services and the User Profiles etc.

(d) Generate the traffic map by using one or all the following methods:

(e) Launch the simulation

(f) In the end, you can select the simulation result as the input of prediction in the 1st screenshot in this document.

(g) Select the prediction study, for example, Service level (Eb/Nt) uplink. Then in the properties window, under Display Tab, select Discrete Values under the

Display Type. Then select Rates under Field

How do I build the Atoll.ini file needed for creating the table for Eb/Nt values and their corresponding data rates?Answer: From Atoll version 2.2.0, the (C/I<-> Max Rate) lookup table is provided in the project file be default. You can have it in the properties of each Mobility type:

Click the “Graph” button then you will have a graph as shown below.

You can modify the values in the graph according to your real network.

The table below shows the Eb/Nt as a function of data rate for satisfying the modulation and coding requirements for 1% packet error rate:
