ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

YOU NEVER KNOW WHO’S WATCHING! Last week 25 youth from our parish and several adults went to West Virginia to aid the cleanup after the disastrous floods of the spring. As it happens, a deacon whom I have known for years was vacationing down there. Dan & Dolly Foley sent me the following report: We have a second home, in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, directly across from St. Charles Borromeo Parish where your kids were headquartered. The kids worked hard in some difficult conditions and tight living conditions. I heard great things about the service they provided and how respectful and engaging they were. I was very proud of the witness and spirit these kids from the Diocese of Lansing gave in Chris-tian service to others. We figured they needed a little break so we had the whole group picked up by the hotel shuttles last evening and brought over to our house for Mass and an ice cream social. At one point, some of the kids engaged in con-versation with some of our neighbors and made a great impression. When the shuttles drove them back, some of the kids began to talk about the house that was on national news. It was on fire as it floated down the riv-er and hitting the bridge. The shuttle driver finally spoke up and told them it was his house. I don't think he told them the rest of the story which was that his wife was killed in that house. I suspect that was sober-ing and further personalized the terrible tragedy down here where 14 people died in the disaster. You have every reason to be proud of the staff and kids. It’s hard to believe that just two weeks ago we were in the mountains of West Virginia working to help people recover from the devastation of a flood. We met many homeowners and heard stories of what it was like. Through all the stories, hard dirty work and heat, our teens were amazing! They worked hard without complaint, got dirty with-out disgust, and accepted strangers with open arms. I am so proud of them all. I will have more about the trip next week directly from the group themselves with personal reflections. If you ever see a bright yellow NRN shirt, please do not hesi-tate to stop the person wearing it to ask about their experience. Thank you for your support and prayers through the week.

Hard at work helping to clean out a basement area that was completely filled with muck, water and per-sonal belongings.

Taking a well-deserved break!

Religious Formation Registration - We continue to take registrations for the fall programs. Please stop by the office Monday—Friday between 8:30 am and 4 pm to register.

Thank you to all who have said yes! Several volunteers will be returning this year and many new adults have offered to help. We still need a few co-catechists for Wednesday and Thursday eve-nings. You do not have to do this alone, join us as a co-catechist. This means you will co-teach week to week.

A huge thank you… Journey with Jesus requires

many hours and many hands. Next week we will thank everyone who helped to make this past week a giant success for the children of the community.

Protecting God’s Children Workshop We will host a workshop on September 8, 2016, at 6:30 pm. This three-hour workshop must be completed by anyone who works or volunteers for the church with children, disabled or the elderly. If you are one of these people and you have not taken the training, please contact me at [email protected] for instructions on how to register.

Confirmation Retreat—Friday of this week, 54 of our Confirmation Candidates will be on an overnight retreat. I ask everyone to pray for our candidates, adult leaders, presenters and other various volunteers, that we have a very rewarding experience, as we break open the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Spirit of wisdom and understanding, enlighten our minds to perceive the mysteries of the universe in relation to eternity. Spirit of right judgment and courage, guide us and make us firm in our baptismal decision to follow Jesus' way of love. Spirit of knowledge and reverence, help us to see the lasting value of justice and mercy in our everyday dealings with one another. May we respect life as we work to solve problems of family and nation, economy and ecology. Spirit of God, spark our faith, hope and love into new action each day. Fill our lives with wonder and awe in your presence which penetrates all creation. Amen.

Make the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises

If you always imagine God in the same way, no matter how true and beautiful it may be, you will not be able to receive the gift of the new ways He has ready for you. Carlos Valles, S.J.

The Ignatian Spiritual Exercises is a pilgrimage of a spiritual search for the fulfillment of a desire for holi-ness. The pilgrimage is about praying, searching, ex-ploring and discovering; it is a journey with God and a journey to (ward) God. Christ Jesus is the pilgrim’s companion as one learns to walk the life journey path as Jesus. Jesus asks: “What are you looking for?” (Jn1:38) and “Come and see.” (Jn 1:39). Those who engage in the Spiritual Exercises discover a response to “What is God asking of me?” The Ex-ercise experience is good for increasing openness to the movement of the Holy Spirit, strengthening and supporting one in the effort to respond ever more faithfully to the love of God. The full Spiritual Exercises may be done in the midst of ordinary daily life at home. It involves a daily com-mitment of 45-60 minutes in prayer and reflection centered on the themes of the Exercises and a week-ly meeting with Linda Chevalier, Spiritual Director for approximately eight or nine months. Linda meets with the Exercise pilgrim on a weekly basis at her home, which allows for reflective conversation and confiden-tiality. The cost for the Spiritual Exercises is to offer your director a stipend, payable to the director over the course of the retreat. You will have a discussion about the precise details during your first conversa-tion. If you feel drawn to make the Ignatian Exercises in Daily Life, first pray about it and if you still feel drawn toward making the Exercises, contact Linda Chevalier (810.229.9734) or [email protected].
