Zainab M. Hassan, founder of the movement, said the group has members from all over the world and all across Somalia, including Benadir, Puntland and Somaliland regions.

She created a Facebook page two months ago and invited a few of her friends to the page, and the friends in turn invited their friends. The page has more than 9,000 members and growing. Zeinab reiterated that this is the “beginning of a movement that will do great things for women.”

“Women’s contribution is critical to the development of our society,” she said.

The women speakers came from around the world.

Muhubo Ahmed Sa id , popularly known as Muhubo Fabulous, one of the speakers who has established a powerful presence on social media, was very loud, assertive and passionate. She reminded her audience that their people back home depended on them to do good work that will help them; that the voices of Somali women matter.

“Somal i women have arrived, they are not waiting for permission,” Muhubo said. “People back home are depending on us to do good so that they can

benefit from our efforts.”Sheikh Abdirahman Sharif, the

main theologian for the night, urged the attendees both men and women of their role to making positive and honest contributions to their community.

There was an emotional moment when one of the speakers, Fadumo Hiraad, the first female Somali reporter for Radio Mogadishu and also a singer, called her daughter, Sahra Omar Dhule, to the stage. The two hugged each other. This sewed the audience to the speakers and from that point the two were inseparable henceforth. The theme of the their speech was to remind the women to remember their history and preserve it and perpetuate it.

Fadumo told the audience in attendance that the women in her generation went through more hardships. Their environment was not conducive for change because of entrenched bigotry against women, but that notwithstanding, they made some gains and that it is the obligation of this generation to take over from them and move forward the struggle for gender equity in the Somali community.

“Women did not have the

economic means to fight oppressions but they were resourceful in their efforts,” Fadumo told the audience. “They, for example, sewed clothes, made jewelry, and sold them to finance the efforts of their struggles.”

“Women, know your history and the contributions you made to the overall struggle. And then build on that.”

The reception of the gathering was positive and optimistic about the role women will play in the future in women’s representation in every sphere of the Somali community.

“Women will make important contributions to the Somali community,“ said Lul H. Kulmiye, the moderator of the event. “They will do this using the force of their minds–and not force of their muscles,” insinuating that women will do things differently than what men have always done.

Ruqia Mohamed of Minnesota, an attendee who works in Somalia, said, “Her goal is to get as many of Somalis living abroad to go back to Somali to help with the rebuilding effort.”

“Your education and skills is badly needed back home,” she said.

Sidoo kale waxaa ka soo qayb galay xubno matalayey madaxda magaa looyinka , degmooyinka iyo waliba gobolka Minnesota. Isutaga Jaalliyada

Police brutality carried out in Kenya against Somali migrants,

which is intended to root out potential members of Islamic terror group al-Shabaab, may in fact be radicalising the youth, many of whom are are refugees from the political unrest in their country.

Pictures showing policemen flogging suspected members

of Somalia-based terror group al-Shabaab were originally

posted on Facebook by Michale Orita, a senior police officer from Garissa, capital of Garissa county.

He later took the pictures down but the caption that went with them remained. It read: “Somali young men [who] came to Garissa for a purpose but little

did they know we are smarter than them.”

Al-Shabaab is notorious for carrying out attacks in Kenya in retaliation for the deployment of its troops in Somalia. In April, the militants attacked a university college in Garissa killing 148 people.

Abuses in the name of fight against terror

There have lately be warnings about increasing police violence against Somalis in a refugee camp in Dadaab in Garissa county, which the Kenyan government believes is used by Somali extremists to enter the country.

Kenyan police paranoia about repeated terror attacks have resulted in widespread brutality: a 2012 report by Human Right Watch also

documented widespread human right abuses by Kenyan police against refugees following terror attacks.

Somali human rights activist Khalif Abdi Farah, who lives in northern Kenya, told IBTimes UK: “What police are doing to Somali youths in Garissa is inhumane, police are actually radicalising the youths.”

“By torturing them daily, they are pushing them to join Al- Shabaab. If you are tortured and your sisters are raped by KDF [Kenya Defence Forces] soldiers, what will you do?”

Farah, who is coordinator of the Northern forum for democracy, a human rights organisation based in Garissa, said Somali migrants are victims of attacks every day and the international community has failed to address the issue.

“People are just taken from their houses and killed, women are raped. Nobody speaks about human rights abuses in northern Kenya and it is time to change. We need the international community to speak up because we cannot keep talking about torture, rape and death every year.

“The Somali Community are doing well in business in Kenya and President Uhuru Kenyatta and the Kikuyu [the largest ethnic group in Kenya] feel threatened by this.”

He said Somali migrants who are allegedly victims of abuses by police do not speak up for fear of further persecution.

“Kenya uses the excuse of Shabaab to harass Somalis. We are tired of police brutality.”

A civilian from northern

Kenya, who spoke under condition of anonymity, told IBTimes UK: “Security agencies in the region are committing abuses daily in the name of fighting terror. It’s inhumane and a violation of our rights.

“We feel abandoned and isolated in our country. The region has been turned into a police military state.”

Garissa county commissioner James Kianda was quoted as saying: “The officers who posted the photos and others involved will face disciplinary action, of course subject to validation. This is not how we want to fight terrorism.”

Both the Office of the President and the police in Kenya declined to comment for this article.

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office welcomed leaders who represent the future of law

enforcement and public safety in Hennepin County.

According to the Minnesota State Demographer, 44 percent of Hennepin County residents are projected to be non-white or Latino by 2035.

D u r i n g a r o u n d t a b l e discussion, members of the

National Latino Peace Officers Association, the National Somali Peace Officers Association and National Asian Peace Officers Association worked to identify strategies for recruiting, hiring and retaining diverse officers and employees.

diverse county in Minnesota, and our police force needs to reflect that,” said Sheriff Stanek. “We do a good job, but we can and must do better. With the support of the leaders I met with today, I’m confident we are on the right track.”

One of the current goals of

the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is to recruit, hire and retain a highly skilled diverse workforce, both sworn and non-sworn, that represents the community it serves and meets the needs of the future.

The Sheriff’s Office plans to hold more talks on diversity

in law enforcement in the near future.

Most of the historians agree that Somalis are one tribe or one race—but the problem starts when the Somali tribe or the Somali race becomes too many clans and too many sub clans—because Somalis form fragile alliances based on clan lines, and all those alliances are not usually positive—for nearly three decades, in Somalia, Somalis have been fighting with one and other in clan lines, which created human destruction in the country and generated approximately one million Somali refugees or Diaspora in the world—a lot has been written about this in the context of inside the country, but this time, I will try to jot a little bit about this in the context of Somalis in the West, especially

in the United States. In the Uni ted Sta tes ,

community organizations could be powerful in the advocacy of their communities—because of the chronic disunity of Somalis in America, notably in matters of collective interest as a Somali community, any gains that could have been accomplished are hampered by ambiguous incongruities within the Somali community, which are frequently driven by personal interests fuelled by clan alliances and clan lines—on the individual level, everyone is busy with building their life, but on the collective level, disunity is out there, hardly noticeable from the outside of the Somali community, primarily what is unnoticeable from outside

is the collective dysfunction of the Somali community when it comes to common interests of the community.

To emphasize that tribalism is unacceptable in Islam, let me quote a Hadith: Prophet Mohammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “He is not one of us who calls to tribalism. He is not one of us who fights for the sake of tribalism. He is not one of us who dies following the way of tribalism.”

And in this country, according to the American law, it is not ok to treat anyone differently citing things outside the law—everyone knows that.

In fact, in America, the Somalis with brains that still employ the idea of using clan

lines to achieve anything are daydreaming as if they are still in Somalia—this is America, the Somali America community should have bigger agendas than dividing itself into clans and sub clans—the Somali American community should look at the challenges outside, the bigger dreams, the vision and better strategies to better themselves, to serve their adopted country and to help, as much as they can, their old country of Somalia.

Just to make an important point, the US state with the biggest Somali American population is Minnesota. There is no official number, but according to unofficial estimations, the number could be as nearly as 150,000 in Minnesota alone.

If only a couple of thousands from this number would stand for defending the unity of the Somali American community, the situation of today would have had a different picture, Somali Americans would have achieved more and they could have become more successful as a community—and this unity, don’t get me wrong, is the betterment of the community, which can have positive impact on the street of this beloved country of the United States too—on the streets of Minneapolis and St Paul—on the streets of Rochester and Mankato—on the streets of Willmar and St Cloud—just to name few cities in our beloved state of Minnesota where Somalis live.

In conclusion, America is the land of opportunities—and those opportunities are not always material—human capital, new ideas, new mentalities and new way of thinking without compromising one’s culture and religion could be merits that deserve searching from the thinking warehouses of this huge country of the Unites States. I hope Somali American community, Somali Americans will find a way to create fresh unity and to stay away anything that can divide this community—only then they can find the hidden golds in this country!

Can E-learning save the Somali language of the next generation?miS/nn/hrb

Every summer, thousands of Somali families make their way back home for the holidays.

The cities are sprawling with teenagers and young adults from the Diaspora community in their distinct fashion wear and unique way of walking and talking that makes them stand out from the crowd. They bring a flavour to town that is clearly visible, but there is one problem, they all seem to be speaking foreign languages many of whom only know the basic Somali

vocabulary equivalent to that of a 5 year old.

It’s been a developing trend

amongst the young Somali Diaspora, which has slowly been losing its mother language, with majority of those under the age of thirty being born in foreign countries. The question now is how do we reverse this decline and prevent the Somali language from going extinct amongst young people?

Is E-learning the solution? The team at www.SomaliBaro.com

certainly do think so. They are one of the first online schools, teaching the Somali Language to young Somali’s aged 11 to 30 years old. The company has its offices, staff and teachers all based in Hargeisa and is using high speed Fibre Optic internet by Somcable to connect to its students from all over the world.

Mahdi Abib is the 29 year old entrepreneur and the brains behind SomaliBaro.com and has made it his mission to improve the language skills of at least ten thousand young Somali’s by 2020.

Q: How did you come up with the idea?

A: “I always thought my Somali was pretty good, since I knew how to speak, read and write, but when I first moved to Hargeisa about a year ago, my confidence got a big knock and I realised how much I still didn’t know. There are hundreds

of thousand young Somali’s just like myself with many that don’t even know how to read and write and have no tools or a service offering them to learn Somali. Almost every language you can think of is thought online but unfortunately Somali is not one or at least not professionally.”

Q: why did you choose e-learning?

A: “I chose e-learning because of the reach it has and the comfort it provides. We have students from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Canada taking our live online classes. Secondly most of them want to learn in private, no one wants to admit they don’t know Somali but they all want to improve and not feel embarrassed or have to hide every time family comes to visit.”

Q: How does it work?A: “Our service is very simple,

we provide weekly classes online with live teachers in Hargeisa who also speak fluent English and all the student needs is internet and headphones. At SomaliBaro.com we have ‘Beginner’ and ‘Intermediate’ courses depending on your current level of Somali with easy monthly payments starting from $35. We also offer a FREE trial to everyone who registers online and they can give it a go and see if it is something for them.”

Q: what about the internet and electricity problems in Hargeisa?

A: “We have been very fortunate to get here in time for the Fibre Optic internet from Somcable, the fibre glass runs underground and is not affected by the weather, so all our classes run smoothly with no interruptions and very clear sound and video quality. We have also installed a UPS

back-up which has solved the electricity issue.”

Q: How can people sign-up?A: “For anyone who is

interested then they can go to SomaliBaro.com website and fill the detail form on the ‘home page’ of the website and our team will contact you within 24 hours giving you your log-in details for your free trial, all the student needs is internet and a pair of headphones.”

This is the first of many e-learning sites soon to come, as the Somali community becomes more and more aware of the power of technology and the internet and starts putting it to use with the next generation taking the lead. Do you think e-learning will save the Somali language?

by: ahmEd Said, Somali Current | Ahmed Said is a Somalicurrent blogger based in Minnesota, USA. He writes about Somali Diaspora related issues in the world and also the current affairs of Somalia.

Y e s t e r d a y M a s t e r C a r d announced it will be the first

international payments network to enter Somalia through its partnership with the country’s Premier Bank.

The deal means the bank will now issue and accept

MasterCard-branded cards in Somalia, with around 5,000

debit cards expected to be issued this year. The result: for the first time, MasterCard holders travelling to Somalia can make payments or withdrawals using Premier Bank’s infrastructure.

“Any one of two billion MasterCard-branded cards can be used on Premier Bank’s infrastructure, currently ATMs… but it is obviously going to evolve to include points-of-sales in the near future. So the significance of this is that it is really opening up [Somalia],” MasterCard’s vice-president and area business head for East Africa, James Wainaina, told How we made it in Africa.

Opening up to the global economy

Somalia, which has undergone years of civil war, did not have a formal parliament until

2012 after its president Siad Barre was overthrown in 1991. Years of instability impeded development, and the country has a low penetration of banking infrastructure with the vast majority of the population still excluded from the formal financial system.

According to Wainaina, the deal makes travel easier for both MasterCard-holding foreigners entering the country and Somalis travelling outside. “So travellers into the market do not have to carry cash… Hopefully this is a journey that will reflect a lot more positivity [about the

country] and that of which one can do business in Somalia.”

He added the partnership with Premier Bank also marks a step towards increasing financial inclusion in Somalia and bringing the country into the global economy.

“Statistics we have been exposed to show us that 8% of Somalia’s population above the age of 15 have access to formal financial services,” he said, cautioning that this could be unreliable due to challenges of gathering dependable data.

“But there is a huge financial inclusion opportunity.”

The greatest impact can be seen in the remittance market, which is an essential source of income for many Somalis. Foreigners, expatriates, members of the diaspora and international organizations are now able to transfer funds via a traceable network, eliminating the risks of transporting cash.

“Currently it is estimated that between US$1bn to $1.3bn in remittances is from the Somali diaspora… and the challenges are related not so much to where the funds have originated from, but who the recipients of such funds are.”

The US congre s sman Keith Ellison known for his advocacy for Somalia’s troubled remittances service vowed he would continue his efforts to help the horn of Africa nation to take up its vital lifeline service after

US banks discontinued handling money for Somali Hawala companies.

Mr. Ellison, the Minn. Democrat who was with visiting Somali delegates led by prime minister Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke assured them that he’d spare no effort to keep Somalia’s lifeline open.

“I will continue to work with Members of Congress and government agencies to keep the remittances lifeline to Somalia open, ensure that all Somalis are safe and secure in their country, and advocate for

Somali refugees in Dadaab.”

said the 49-year –old democrat congressman in a statement from his office on Thursday.

It’s not the first time that the first Muslim congressman who has long been advocating for the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq urged his government to reopen Somali money transfer companies.

Following a visit by the US secretary of State John Kerry in Mogadishu, Keith Ellison warned the US not to waste Somalia’s ‘hard-fought’ fragile gains by closing Somalia ‘lifeline’ remittance services

US banks that handled Somali

money transfer services have terminated contracts with the companies over complicated banking regulations and anti-terror legislation.

Somali Hawalas deliver hundreds of millions into the horn of Africa each month, including funds for aid agencies supporting the poor people in the impoverished horn ofAfrica nation.

Recen t ly , the Kenyan government also closed the accounts for 86 individuals, organizations, hotels and remittance companies it accused of being involved in terrorism

activities.International organizations

including the United Nations and humanitarian workers warned that shutting down Hawala companies will have a huge impact on Somalia as it would

cut off a vital lifeline for Somalia which has no formal banking system.

Opening to global economy: What MasterCard’s deal in Somalia meansbY: katE douglaS | Source: How we made it in Africa

Since independence from France in 1977 this tiny republic at the confluence of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden has turned itself into a regional player with strategic and commercial clout.

Not long ago Djibouti was known for little more than French legionnaires, desert and a small ramshackle port. But nowadays this tiny republic on the northern tip of the Horn of Africa has big plans, including turning its capital into the Dubai of Africa.

Since gaining independence from France in 1977, Djibouti has steadily carved out a regional role through its strategic and commercial relevance at the junction of Africa, the Middle East and the Indian Ocean.

New Chinese investment totalling €10.8 billion will fund the building of six new ports, two new airports, and what is being touted as the biggest and most dynamic free trade zone

in Africa, potentially giving the capital, Djibouti City, an edge over its rivals.

“About 2 million African

customers travel to Dubai each year,” said Dawit Gebre-Ab, with the Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority overseeing the city’s commercial infrastructure development. “We know what is on their shopping lists, and they could be coming here instead.”

Behind the construction cranes and flashy hotels, however, there still exists in Djibouti a palpable French-colonial legacy fused with a heady mix of traditional Somali, Arab and Ethiopian influences among its 900,000 population.

Some local Djiboutians express mixed feelings about the bid for modernity and its transformative effects, fearing what could be lost, and may already be fading.

Regional playerRecent fighting in Yemen

thrust Djibouti into the limelight as it has played host to hundreds of refugees fleeing the city of Aden. Only 30 km separate the

two countries’ coasts at the narrowest point of the Bab-el-Mandeb strait—translating as gateway of tears—joining the

Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.“Djibouti has an important

security role in the region,” said Mohammed Ali, the Djibouti Foreign Ministry’s secretary-general. “Events in Somalia, Eritrea, South Sudan and Yemen illustrate how this is evolving.”

One foreign diplomat referred to Djibouti as “an oasis in a bad neighbourhood”. And recently the US military agreed a 25-year extension to its presence, including Camp Lemonnier, i ts African headquarters . Total foreign military—also including personnel from France, Netherlands, Spain and Japan—based in Djibouti could number around 25,000, according to some estimates.

Perched at the southern approach to the Suez Canal, Djibouti’s ports serve one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, as well as acting as a lifeline to neighbouring landlocked Ethiopia, a growing regional

economic power and Africa’s second most populous country.

But not everyone is happy with Djibouti’s current strategic and

economic upswing.“The government only cares

about how to collect the country’s wealth,” said a Djiboutian journalist previously arrested for reporting on domestic issues. “They do not care about freedom of expression, human rights, justice and equal opportunities of people.”

Other locals speak of a country run by a business-savvy dictatorship, while China’s increasing involvement has Western observers paying close and sceptical attention.

French legacyEvery morning in the small

town of Tadjoura, a two-hour ferry ride from Djibouti City, local Djiboutians queue to collect their daily quota of baguettes—a scene repeated across the country. Djibouti’s former existence as French Somaliland has left an indelible Gallic stamp.

Along with Somali, Afar and

Arabic, French remains one of the main languages used. A constant stream of “bonsoirs” greet the visitor during an

evening stroll around Djibouti City’s so-called European quarter and its focal point: Place du 27 Juin 1977, a large square of whitewashed buildings and Moorish arcades named for the date of independence.

At the same time, cafés brewing coffee in the traditional Ethiopian s ty le , Yemeni restaurants serving poisson yemenite, and haggling at open-air markets in rapid-fire Somali all add to the surprising melting pot within this small capital city.

But whether that cultural mix can withstand the brash new modernising development is a concern for some locals, proud of the country’s past and heterogeneous mix of traditions.

“My fear is not about cultural change, because we need that as this is an ultra-conservative society,” said a 30-year-old female governmental employee, who wished to remain anonymous, “but rather

the effects on our customs, such as traditional clothing, food and decorations that symbolise our identity.”

African DubaiDreams of a Dubai-type future

have questionable relevance for most local Djiboutians, 42 percent of whom live in extreme poverty, while 48 percent of the labour force are unemployed, according to 2014 figures.

In addition to criticism of the ruling regime for not doing enough to relieve widespread poverty, some question what, if anything, of tangible benefit was bequeathed by France’s colonial rule. Concerns about the present situation extend to those who came from outside Djibouti seeking better prospects.

“Now I can’t stay here,” said Mohammed, a marine engineer, who left Iraq after the 1991 war for Djibouti, where he married locally. “My three children won’t be able to get good enough jobs. I’m hoping my brother in the US will be able to get us a green card.”

Twenty-nine-year-old Tesfaye entered Djibouti from Ethiopia without documentation six years ago to search for work. Now he sleeps on the beach and does casual work like washing cars and clearing rubbish.

“It’s a dog’s life, living like that, having to run from the police,” Tesfaye said.

Meanwhi l e , D j ibou t i ’ s maritime commerce continues apace: ships endlessly glide across the Gulf of Tadjoura to and from the ports; cranes offload containers to waiting trucks late into the night under arc lights.

Soon a Chinese-built railway will link Djibouti to the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, and could eventually connect to other Chinese-built railways emerging across the African continent.

It’s all a far cry from 1930, when the visiting English novelist Evelyn Waugh described French Somaliland as “a country of dust and boulders” and “intolerable desolation”.

observing Ramadan. This means they will refrain from eating, drinking, smoking and sex during day light. They will also perform extra worshiping including additional prayers known as “Taraweeh” and observed in the Ramadan period.

Yemen’s football team have had to take to the sea to make a World Cup qualifying match with North Korea, as it is the only route out of their war torn country.

As Saudi Arabia continued to pound the country with air strikes on 4 June and rival rebel groups battled for control of the city of Aden, Yemen’s national team boarded a boat for Djibouti, crossing a treacherous stretch of water that has already been braved by thousands of refugees since the war began.

In pictures posted on the

Facebook page of Yemen’s sports minister, Rafat Ali Al-Akhali‎, the team are seen on the deck of a squalid boat somewhere in the Mandeb Strait. Yemen coach Amin Al-Sanini told Yemeni media the trip would take 13 hours and it was the only way the players could get out of the country.

Saudi Arabia has imposed a blockade on the country since it intervened when Shia Houthi rebels took control of the capital, Sana’a, and Saudi-backed president Abdrabbuh Hadi fled the country for Riyadh. Hundreds

have been killed in both air strikes and street battles between Hadi loyalists, Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and Houthi rebels.

From Djibouti, the team will travel to Doha where they will meet with their Czech coach, Miroslav Soukup, and train for the match with North Korea on 11 June. Yemen then play the Philippines on 16 June. Bahrain and Uzbekistan are also in their group.

Even before the war, Yemen had played all of their home games since 2010 abroad because

the country was not deemed safe enough for foreign sides to visit.

In 2010, the country hosted the Gulf Cup of Nations, which is played between Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, the UAE, Kuwait and Yemen, but did not win a single game and crashed out having only scored one goal.

Ranked 165 in the world by Fifa, Yemen have never qualified for the World Cup but the team are confident that with an international manager, they stand a chance this time. Before the war began, the national side beat Pakistan 3-1 in a qualifier

in Doha.Most of Yemen’s coaches

have come from the Gulf but in 1977, former Crystal Palace and Wimbledon coach Alan Gillett managed the North Yemen national squad before the country was unified in 1990. Red Star Belgrade player Vladimir Petrovic also headed up the team for a brief period before quitting in May 2014.

DATE, CARDAMOM andBANANA SMOOTHIE

Dates are a favourite food in our household during the month of Ramadan when we fast from dawn to dusk. So I thought I would incorporate it into a smoothie for a healthy drink.

Dates are good for you. They contain calcium, sulphur, iron, potassium, phosphorous, manganese, copper, magnesium and lots of fibre. And there is a good reason too why they are

recommended to break the fast. Dates help you avoid overeating as they are a low GI food and help reduce the feelings of hunger.

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is teaming up with HealthPartners clinics and HealthPartners Institute for Education and Research, and the SoLaHmo Partnership for Health and Wellness/West Side Communi ty Health Services to launch a new health research project

designed to protect families and communities from three harmful chemicals: mercury, lead, and cadmium.

M i n n e s o t a F a m i l y Environmental Exposure Tracking (MN FEET) will focus on Hmong, Latina, Somali and White women in Minnesota who receive

prenatal care a t some HealthPartners and West Side clinics. The project starts in June and will include up to 600 women over two years.

Mercury, lead, and cadmium can get into women’s bodies from some food, products and the environment. MN FEET will inform women if these

chemicals are in their bodies and their newborn babies. The project team examine if differences in exposure exist among the four communities. Also, the program will help pregnant women learn how to avoid coming into contact with these chemicals.

“This is part of our effort to ensure that every baby has a healthy start,” said Dr. Kathleen A. Culhane-Pera, Associate Medical Director and Co-Director of Community Based Research at West Side. “What we learn from MN FEET will be important to the communities, families and patients served at West Side.”

Pregnant women receiving care at the following clinics may be contacted by clinic staff to hear more about the project and be invited to join:

• La Clinica

• East Side Family Clinic• McDonough Homes

Clinic• HealthPartners St. Paul• HealthPartners Health

Center for WomenWomen who consent to

join the project will be asked to answer a questionnaire over the phone. At the birth, the woman’s care team will collect urine and cord blood samples from the mother to test for mercury, lead and cadmium. Each participant will receive their test results and information on how to protect their family from these chemicals. If the test results are high, MDH will work with the baby’s family to identify the source and reduce exposure.

“MN FEET is important because it will identify the harmful chemicals that women and children in some

communities are getting exposed to,” said Amira Adawe, Planner and Health Educator at St. Paul-Ramsey County Publ ic Heal th . “The study will help reduce disparities in environmental exposures.”

MN FEET is part of the MN Biomonitoring Program at MDH, which tracks exposures to chemicals in vulnerable Minnesota populations with a focus on pregnant women, children and disadvantaged communities. This program can provide data to inform decisions and evaluate actions for protecting future generations. For more information, go to www.health.state.mn.us/mnfeet

Autism waa naafonimo saameysa sida uu canugga dadka u xiriiriyo, ula dhaqmo, ula ciyaaro ama uu wax u barto. Canugga autismka qaba waxba kagama duwana muuqaal ahaan caruurta kale, Qiyaas ahaan, 68dii canugba 1 canug ayaa qaba autism. Wiilasha ayaa 5 jeer kaga badan gabdhaha. Dadka oo idil ayuu ku dhici karaa umana kala sooco asalka, qoowmiyadda, hee rka dhaqaa laha ama bulshonimada

Autismka wuxuu ilmo walba u saameeyaa si ka duwan kan kale – kala duwanaantaa oo la xiriirta baaxadda iyo culeyska dhibaatada cudurka.

Waa xil waalid walba saaran in uu si joogta ah ula socdo koboca ilmahiisa gaar ahaan sida uu ilmaha u cayaaro, wax u barto, u hadlo iyo sida uu u dhaqmo taas oo waalidka u bidhaamineysa haddii dareen dib u dhac ah

jiro. Ha is dhiganin. Ficil deg deg ah oo aad ku dhaqaaqdid ayaa isbedel iyo horukac canuggaaga u keeni kara.

Maxaa Keena Autism-kaLama yaqaano dhamaan

waxyaabaha keena autism-ka. Waxaase la dareensanyahay in ay jiraan waxyaabo badan oo sababi kara kuwaas oo daciifin kara canugga una sahli kara inuu qaado autism-ka. Waxaa ka mid ah waxyaabo ku sugan degaanka ay dadka ku nool yihiin, kuwo la xiriira biolojiyada (asaaska jirka aadaminga) iyo kuwo la xiriira isirka (isir raaca ah). Ma jirto sabab la ogsoon yahay oo dhaqan ahaan ama caqiido ahaan keenta autism-ka.

Waxay culimada isku raaceen in isirku door ka ciyaaro inuu ilmaha qaado autism-ka. Haddii uu qoys kaga dhoco autismka canug, fursadda inuu canug kale kaga dhoco waa ay sareeysaa.

Waxaa jira raadad cilmiyeysan oo tusaaya in waqtiyada xasaasiga ah ee uu canugga qaadi karo autism-ka ay yihiin ka hor inta uusan dhalan, waqtiga dhalmada iyo ka dib islamarka uu dhasho.

Waxaa kaloo la tuhunsanyahay in khatarka inuu canug qaado autism-ka ay kor u kacdo marka waalidiinta iska dhala canug ay da’ weyn yihiin.

Autismka wuxuu ka mid yahay cudurada faraha kulul ku haya dunida oo dhan. Cilmibaarisyo ayaa socda oo la rabo in lagu ogaado waxyaabaha keeni kara cudurkan.

Ma jirto daawo lagu daweeyo autism-ka. Mana jiro dhiig la baaro oo lagu ogaado.

Sidaas darteed, waxaa aad muhiim u ah in waalidiinta oo dhan si feejignaan leh ula socdaan koriimada caruurtooda bartaana calaamadaha lagu garto autism-ka. Sidoo kale, haddii aad ka wel welsan tahay canuggaaga kobociisa, la tasho takhtarka. Waxay culumo badan isku raaceen inay wanaagsantahay in canugga ammin hore daryeelka loo bilaabo (dhalashada ila iyo 36 bil jirka) , taas oo ka caawineysa ilmaha inuu barto xirfado dheraad ah sida hadalka
