Thank you to City Serve for the work that was completed in our playground on Saturday 27 th October. A group of about 25 volunteers arrived at school, armed with tools and lots of positive energy to complete some projects identified by the school. The tasks were to build a pirate ship, a sandpit, mulch the gardens and paint the inside of the staffhouse. We are ever thankful for this help. This work, combined with the relocation of the fixed equipment, the P&C funded sporting field and the outdoor classroom/vegetable garden project, is helping our grounds to look much more appealing. Thank you to the school staff and the parent volunteers who have contributed to this. Some great playground signage is on order to further add to the aesthetics of the playground, but also to reinforce our school values and rules. Keep your eyes out for these! Absence Notifications We will be starting to send SMS messages to parents each morning if their child is not at school. Staff will be marking the roll asap in the morning and at 9:30am the office staff will generate an SMS list of those parents who have students away on that day. We are working hard to have the appropriate systems in place to ensure that errors are not made to avoid unnecessary stress for parents. The days that we have identified where improved systems are required is when there is a change to school routine. If you do get a message about your child’s absence which is in error, please contact the school office asap.

Outdoor Classroom Day Last week the whole school participated in Outdoor Classroom Day. Thank you to Mrs Burgess, Maree Turner, Kasia Dutton and Rebecca Howard for their enthusiasm and planning for this activity. This was a great opportunity for the students to learn about the living things that exist in our surroundings and to be involved in the next season’s planting. There are more and more items being added to the area, increasing the learning potential for the students.

Kindergarten Orientation Last week we were very excited to meet our new Kindergarten families and their children at the first Kindergarten Orientation session. We have approx. 50 kindergarten students starting school next year and all these little ones were so grown up and confident when they visited the classrooms for the very first time. Our Year 5 students will become involved next week when they meet their buddy. Thank you to Mrs Highland for her work organising the school transition program and to the many parent volunteers and Year 6 students who helped on the day to welcome people and provide assistance with school information and uniforms.

Health Alert Last week we sent a notification to all CEPS families that whooping cough is in the local area, affecting quite a few students in one of our local schools. We have now had one confirmed case at CEPS. Please read the information attached to the newsletter to assist with identifying symptoms. We urge families to be prompt in taking action if they suspect that their child may be affected and follow the NSW Government Health advice to avoid spreading this disease with others.

Student Achievement and Activities Recently, Jude P competed in the Junior State Gymnastics Championships and came 36th overall. He received a silver medal, based on his scores. At another competition prior, Jude and his team came 6th overall. Jude also finished 5th in the Hunter Championships. Well done Jude!

Year 6 visited the high school last week for Have A Go Day where they participated in a range of activities to help them to become familiar with the high school before they start next year. Today the students are completing an assessment that will help the teachers with class placement in Year 7. Our Year 6 are also starting to prepare for the Canberra excursion next week.

This week some of our Year 4 students will attend the second of three enrichment workshops at Whitebridge High School on Robotics and Computer Aided Drafting. During Week 6, some of our Year 5 students will participate in a 3 day workshop on Crime/Mystery Writing. These are great opportunities for our students with interests and skills in these areas to explore their abilities.

Have a great week everyone.

Samaritans Christmas Appeal 19 November – 23 November Christmas is fast approaching and we have once again decided to support the Samaritans Christmas Appeal here at CEPS. In the past we have asked for donations across several weeks. This year, we would appreciate all donations coming in one week - Week 6 of this term.

We will be seeking donations of various non-perishable items for the Samaritans to make Christmas hampers for needy families in the Newcastle/Hunter region.

Some ideas are: • Canned foods - baked beans, spaghetti, tinned fruit, tinned vegetables, soup, tuna, salmon, pet food,

tinned meals etc • Boxes, packets and drinks - cereal, muesli bars, pasta, crackers, biscuits, longlife milk, juice boxes, soft

Tree Of Values This fortnight we have focused on our school value care. We have genuine concern for the wellbeing of ourselves and others, and demonstrate empathy and compassion.

We encourage a caring attitude in our students by modelling to our students how to: - make constructive and encouraging comments about other people's work - how to listen to others - how to be a positive and caring friend We have discussed and learnt strategies for caring for ourselves and other people in our lessons and at assembly. Another way we show our value for care is by participating in a Samaritans Christmas Appeal each year. The students may contribute to the food hamper collection, organised again by Mrs Burgess.

Please have a talk to your children at home about our value for the fortnight. We greatly appreciate your support of our program.

Support Your P&C When my eldest daughter entered Kindergarten, a kind friend asked me if I was going to join the P&C. My answer was a definite “NO!” as I am the most unlikely candidate for a P&C member. In my opinion, I have: • zero cake baking abilities • slightly less than zero leadership skills • an almost unnatural fear of words that start with “m” and end with the letters “eeting” • more than my fair share of social awkwardness.

And besides....I was planning to wash my hair that night!

When I finally overcame my fears and ventured out (of my pyjamas) along to the CEPS staff room on the allotted night, I found to my surprise: friendly faces, warmth, laughter, dedication, enthusiasm and some very interesting information about my child's learning environment.

Since becoming a volunteer, I have learnt:

1. It's nice to see my children's faces during the daytime. If I am in the canteen or working in the garden, I often get a sneaky hug (from my own child...rest assured.)

2. Your kids will remember that you helped out. 3. You are teaching them that they are a member of a community and that people care about stuff. 4. You learn a lot more about your child, their friends, their well-being in passing than you ever do from

school reports.

And, if life is frantically busy, or you work full-time and are unable to volunteer during school hours or attend meetings..... or, if like me you were planning to wash your hair that night.... support the events that your fellow parents have organised. Currently, we're working on the Christmas Movie Night (Friday 14th December). We'll soon be asking for your help in preparing for this popular event, and would love to see you there on the night!

If you have other ideas you would like to discuss, or would like to receive a copy of the P&C meeting minutes, please see a P&C member in the playground, or email [email protected].

Rebecca Howard (P&C Committee Member)

Brand new old stock white logoed shirts on sale at the disco this Wednesday night from 5.45pm – 7.30pm for $15.00. Brand new old style blue sports shorts $12.00. These will be on sale at the hall. The uniform shop will also be open so grab your uniforms for next year or check out the 2nd hand uniforms. We are looking forward to our new Kinder students coming to school next year. If you have a child starting next year and would like to purchase their uniforms now, please fill in the uniform order form and we will deliver them to their sibling’s classroom to take home or you can collect them from the office. Uniforms are also for sale at the kindergarten orientations happening this term. Please use the attached uniform order form to place your orders at the office. Order forms are also found on the website and the app.

Remember, if your child has grown out of any logoed school uniforms and you would like to donate them to the 2nd hand uniform stock, they will go to great use, please hand them into the school office. A 2nd hand uniform sale is held with the monthly CEPS mini markets. Please make sure you take a look as there are some really good quality uniforms being passed down. It is so nice to see so many CEPS students wearing their school uniform with such pride.

Thank you for supporting uniformity across our playground. Jody Pavlou

Another very successful school garden day celebrating national Outdoor Classroom Day was held in the last week of October. All classes spent time in the garden, carrying out a range of activities including seed planting, building a bug hotel and garden maintenance. The bug hotel was a big hit, with local bugs now having a place to call home as they improve our overall garden ecosystem and improve pollination. Our weather station is also taking shape with a rain gauge and thermometer installed and more gadgets to learn about weather and climate coming soon. Our cabbages and onions have been harvested and fresh crops of eggplant, zucchini, cucumber, melons, spaghetti squash and beans in the ground. A huge thankyou to Mrs Burgess, Rebecca Howard and Kasia Dutton for giving their time to support the day. Maree Turner and the P&C Committee

This week in the Lunchbox Café is Salad Week. If your child orders one of our yummy salad tubs, scrumptious burgers, wraps or sandwiches with salad they will receive a free yoghurt or juice pop. This will run from Monday 5th November until Thursday 8th November. We are hoping to encourage the children to make some healthy choices and give something new a try.

Thursday 22nd November is our last Fresh Food Thursday for the year. Again we will be using some produce from our school garden. A note will go home soon outlining the menu for the day. We will also order some twister frozen yoghurt cups on this day as a treat for counter sales at lunch time.

Our Christmas meal deal will also be later this term. A note will go home later with information for that.
