Why this User Survey?

We knew:• The average amount of visitors every month• From which countries they came• That the number of visitors increased steadily

But, we did not know:• The distribution of our visitors among our target groups• The purpose of their visit to our website• How satisfied they were about the content and website

So:• We wanted to find out more about our visitors in order to

anticipate on their needs

• For what purpose do they visit the website?

• How satisfied are they with the OCW content and website?

• What should be improved, according to our users?

• 177 respondents from 34 different countries and 5 continents• 25% of foreigners are working or studying in the Netherlands


Who are the users of ocw.tudelft.nl?


OCW user groups (167 respondents)

• Most of our visitors are students and professionals. • Many are interested in Science & technology

• Dutch students are evenly distributed among educational levels, but the biggest group studies on Secondary Education level!

• International Master students visit OpenCourseWare the most

Why do users visit the site?


Reasons for visiting ocw.tudelft.nl:

• Increasing knowledge within own area of expertise

• Gathering information about studying at TUD

So, OpenCourseWare seems to be a good marketing instrument

• International students make more use of OCW than Dutch students (29% versus 9%)

• TU Delft Students use OCW primarily for reference while studying

• We have to make the OpenCourseWare website more widely known among our own

TU Delft Students


What do we learn from this?

Conclusions:• TU Delft OCW has a large range of both national and

international visitors• We reach the target groups we aim for• OCW materials are of good quality and meet user’s needs• Users purpose of OCW meets the intended purpose of

OCW• Intended OCW improvements meet visitors needs

What strikes:• International respondents are more positive about TU

Delft OCW than Dutch respondents• International students are more familiar with TU Delft

OCW and make also more use of it


Where do we go from here?

Actions:• Improve quality materials

• Publish more courses

• Promotion campaign among Dutch students

• Focus groups with TU Delft lecturers – reuse of

materials
