Ethos, Values, School Motto, and Guiding PrinciplesIntroductionThis school is a Registered and Accredited Independent School established to provide a quality education to the UK community and, in particular, to Brethren students. The School’s Ethos, Values Statement and Guiding Principles govern the School, and are reflected in a series of policies, procedures and handbooks which have been developed to meet statutory and registration requirements and are to be adhered to in all aspects of the operation of the School.
EthosAt this School, students are encouraged to develop their full potential and acquire the discipline of learning how to learn, while upholding Christian teachings and beliefs. The truth and authority of the Holy Bible and strong family values underpin the commitment of the School to provide quality in every facet of education – curriculum, teachers, facilities, management and discipline - in a safe and caring environment.
Values StatementIn coming to this School each student, parent and staff member shall uphold the values of the School which include:
• Integrity – uprightness, honesty and decorous conduct, governed by the Holy Bible;
• Care & Compassion - kindness, consideration and generosity to all; • Respect – for all people, property, opinions and authority;• Responsibility – for our actions, progress and environment; and • Commitment – to self-discipline and the pursuit of excellence.
School Motto ‘Learning to Learn’The School is committed to creating and delivering learning programs that meet the educational needs of each student, and to nurture the attitudes and skills necessary for the continual learning and personal growth throughout life. “Learning to Learn” means to use learning as a tool whereby students are equipped with the ability to think critically, process information perceptually, analyse data accurately, and evaluate situations intelligently in order that they fulfil their true potential

Guiding PrinciplesThe following Guiding Principles of this School are based on the teachings of the Holy Bible, as believed, taught and practiced by the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church (‘the Brethren’):
1. The Directors of the School, as practicing members of the Brethren, are committed to a way of life that is governed by the Holy Bible. The conduct of the students and staff must consistently reflect Biblical values at the School. The Directors in their absolute discretion can determine and exercise their authority as to what conduct or activity within the School environment is in accord with the Holy Bible and the beliefs, teachings and practices of the Brethren.
2. The Brethren uphold the sanctity of marriage and the family unit. 3. Staff are to maintain a positive and professional attitude and conduct themselves
modestly and decorously, setting a proper example to students and in a manner which is respectful of the management, fellow staff, students and parents/guardians, and the Brethren community and way of life.
4. A dress code applies and is to be upheld by all staff at all times. A strict differentiation between male and female dress must be maintained. The wearing of short trousers by male staff is not considered appropriate, and female staff must wear dresses or skirts (at least knee-length), and clothing must be modest and not revealing or low cut in design. Staff must present for duties with a neat and tidy standard of dress and general presentation so as to be a role model for students. Unorthodox or casual dress, and unshaven appearance or long hair for men is inconsistent with the attitude and image promoted by the School.
5. All staff must maintain a positive, professional and supportive attitude to the School management and fellow staff members, and generally demonstrate a willingness to assist in maintaining an encouraging, harmonious and welcoming educational environment throughout the School. Interaction between staff and students should be positive and professional at all times. Class and individual discussions should avoid staff or students’ private lives and be respectful of the beliefs and practices of students and their parents/ guardians.
6. Peer support and positive working relationships between students are encouraged; however, staff are not to condone activities that are not according to the beliefs, teachings and practices of the Brethren.
7. Parents/guardians, students, and staff are expected to conduct themselves with integrity at all times, and in a responsible manner, and bad language, smoking, alcohol and drugs of addiction are not permitted at any School, venue or function at any time or for any reason.
8. The School Board encourages the use of a wide variety of high quality educational material and resources (including multimedia) to provide a well-rounded education. All teaching programs, resources, assignments and assessments are to be in accordance with the Guiding Principles in this document and are subject to review by the School Board.

Discipline PolicyThe Concept of DisciplineThe maintenance of discipline is a fundamental necessity in any organisation. Exercise of a code of discipline is for the benefit of all those involved in the organisation and the population at large. It is not designed for penalty or punishment. It promotes orderly and sensible behaviour whilst constituting a deterrent to disorderly or disruptive behaviour. The lack of discipline is in evidence all around us. In a sense, nowhere is discipline more needed than in the area of education, during our formative years. Acceptance of its necessity is a sign of maturity; a school without discipline is not a school. Whether we appreciate it or not, it remains an essential ingredient. It is there to help all of us fit in and make education an enjoyable experience as well as helping every student to reach his or her full educational potential. With that in mind, our goal at the School is that our students will leave as well qualified, self-disciplined young people ready to engage in life-long learning and capable of tackling the demands of adult life in a mature and responsible manner. The school ethos and Code of Conduct values achievement through talent and diligence, supports commitment to study and encourages chivalry and respect for all.
Code of Conduct• RESPECT the right of teachers to teach and students to learn • RESPECT and value all members of the school Community • RESPECT the school environment
The Focus Learning Trust Behaviour Management Policy, which is available from the School Office, and can be found in the Focus Parent and Student Handbook, has been adopted by the school. In extreme situations, the Trustees reserve the right at their absolute discretion to exclude pupils either temporally or permanently in accordance with the Behaviour Management Policy and the Exclusions Policy
Complaints PolicyFocus School Plymouth Campus have adopted the Focus Learning Trust Complaints Policy and procedures This is available on the school website (www.plymouth.focus-school.com) and a copy of this policy is available from the school on request. It is intended that this policy will be utilised when all informal methods of approach to a situation have failed or a satisfactory solution has not been achieved. The number of complaints registered under the Complaints Policy in the preceding year were NIL.

School InspectionsInspections are a necessary and unavoidable part of school life. Focus Learning Trust retains an external inspection body, the School Inspection Service, to provide a formal inspection service for affiliated schools. These Section 162A inspections are carried out by independent School Inspectors who all have a particular understanding and knowledge of faith schools. The mandatory Section 162A inspections are on a three-year cycle and there will be rigorous inspections to meet the legal requirements of the DCFS. These mandatory inspection reports have to be made public and available to parents. Focus Learning Trust has also set up a programme of monitoring inspections. These are carefully planned 'light touch' inspections specifically intended to support schools in striving for 'Excellence in Education' – the motto of our inspection service. In House ‘Progress Review & Support Visits’ are also undertaken, to offer a high level of support to all schools. Focus Learning Trust considers these visits as an essential means of support for and measure of progress in our schools. Reports other than those following a 162A inspection are not required to go beyond the trustees and staff. The School received a full 162A Inspection in January 2016 under the new and more demanding SIS Inspection regime and was given a “Good and Improving” grade. An interim monitoring inspection was carried out in October 2012. A full 162A Inspection was also carried out in September 2009 where the school was described as being “Good with Outstanding features.” Full copies of the reports can be found at:-www.schoolinspectionservice.co.uk or www.plymouth.focus-school.com/about-us/school-inspections/

The House Point SystemEach student is allocated to a House. There are three Houses:-
Warriors – Green
Raiders – Yellow
Troopers – Red
Regular House meetings are held to give an opportunity for students to discuss problems and make suggestions. Each House will have representatives on the Student Council. A Sports Day is held in the Summer Term in which the Houses compete and a cup is awarded to the winning House at the end of the year. The system is designed to reward good work and effort and to discipline bad behaviour. It also encourages working collaboratively. House points are also awarded for good behaviour, positive behaviour, service to the community, leadership qualities etc. House points can be lost for poor behaviour, disrespect etc. If any student receives a detention this automatically leads to house points being deducted from their house.
