PHILIPPIANS 2:1-13 (NRSV)
1 If then there is any encouragement inChrist, any consolation from love, anysharing in the Spirit, any compassion andsympathy, 2 make my joy complete: be ofthe same mind, having the same love, beingin full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothingfrom selfish ambition or conceit, but inhumility regard others as better thanyourselves. 4 Let each of you look not to
your own interests, but to the interests ofothers. 5 Let the same mind be in you thatwas in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was inthe form of God, did not regard equality withGod as something to be exploited, 7 butemptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And beingfound in human form,8 he humbled himself and became obedient
to the point of death even death on a cross.9 Therefore God also highly exalted him andgave him the name that is above every name,10 so that at the name of Jesus every kneeshould bend, in heaven and on earth andunder the earth, 11 and every tongue shouldconfess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the gloryof God the Father. 12 Therefore, my beloved,
just as you have always obeyed me, not onlyin my presence, but much more now in myabsence, work out your own salvation withfear and trembling; 13 for it is God who is atwork in you, enabling you both to will and towork for his good pleasure.
11:00 a.m.LUKE 7:11-17 (NRSV)
11 Soon afterwards he went to a town callNain, and his disciples and a large crowdwent with him. 12 As he approached the gof the town, a man who had died was beincarried out. He was his mother's only son,and she was a widow; and with her was alarge crowd from the town. 13 When theLord saw her, he had compassion for her said to her, "Do not weep." 14 Then he caforward and touched the bier, and the beastood still. And he said, "Young man, I sato you, rise!" 15 The dead man sat up andbegan to speak, and Jesus gave him to hismother. 16 Fear seized all of them; and thglorified God, saying, "A great prophet harisen among us!" and "God has lookedfavorably on his people!" 17 This word abhim spread throughout Judea and all thesurrounding country.
6:00 p.m.LUKE 6:46-49 (NRSV)
46 Why do you call me Lord, Lord, anddo not do what I tell you? 47 I will show what someone is like who comes to me,hears my words, and acts on them.48 That one is like a man building a housewho dug deeply and laid the foundation orock; when a flood arose, the river burst
against that house but could not shake it,because it had been well built. 49 But theone who hears and does not act is like a mwho built a house on the ground without afoundation. When the river burst against iimmediately it fell, and great was the ruinthat house.

CHURCH WORLD SERVICEEMERGENCY APPEAL:
BURKINA FASO DROUGHT
ASSISTANCE
While Church World Services is doinga monumental job in addressing the needs ofthe families devastated by Hurricane Katrinaand the inept bungling of the U.S. Government,Church World Services continues to work onour behalf as an African people and work onbehalf of our Lord who cares about "the leastof these." Among the massive amount of work
that Church World Services does around theglobe is this new crisis they are addressing inBurkina Faso.
Church World Services has beenaddressing the drought in Niger and in Nigeriasince it started. Church World Services hasbeen addressing the drought in the Sudan andthe refugee problem caused by the genocide inDarfur. Now Church World Services takes on
the crisis in Burkina Faso.Your congregation's support of the
United Church of Christ through its monthlygifts to Our Church's Wider Mission (OCWM)makes the ministry of Church World Servicespossible as we join in with millions ofChristians black, white, brown and Asian toaddress the needs of developing countries andthe needs of African Americans in this country. The monies we send to the denomination eachmonth from your tithes makes this supportpossible.
Below is an appeal from Church WorldServices that went out during the first part ofthe month, while we were dealing with the
aftermath of Katrina and the lack of theGovernment's response. I am giving it to yoto keep you informed and so that you may hsome idea what your denomination does onan ongoing basis when it comes to helpingpoor black Africans. Your denomination istrying to make self-made American Bishopsrich. We are trying to help the poorest of thpoor both here in America and all overGod's world.
Sept. 9, 2005SITUATION: The northern province
of Passor and Oubritenga in the west Africnation of Burkina Faso have been seriouslyaffected by drought caused by a shorteninthe rainy season and devastation brought a plague of migratory locusts.
"The year 2004 draws to a close wibitter note hanging over the head of hard-working rural populations because they seetheir efforts being reduced to nothing becau
of the shortage of rain," the Association forPeace and Solidarity, a Burkina Faso-basednon-governmental organization and ChurchWorld Service partner, said in a statement.
The lack of rain and resulting droughas resulted in serious food shortages for thsome 100,000 who live in communities in thaffected areas, and is being called anagricultural disaster by humanitarian groupworking in the region, with mounting fears
an escalating food crisis that might lead tofamine. Nearly all in the affected areas aresubsistence farmers.
Exacerbating the problem is the locplague of late 2004, which wiped out cropsabout to be harvested and further imperiled

food security. The drought is having dire social
consequences for the region, with young men
leaving the area for work in urban areas, leaving a vulnerable population of elderly, women and children.
The problems in Burkina Faso, whichhas a population of 14 million, are part of alarger regional food shortage crisis in the so-called northern Sahel region, which includesneighboring Niger.
RESPONSE: Church World Service is
responding to this emergency by supporting theshort-term, immediate efforts of the Association
for Peace and Solidarity, which has beenconducting an assessment of food security inthe affected regions and has previouslyresponded to other food shortage emergencies.
The group is responding withassistance to 3,000 households, each withextended families of about 21 persons, for a
total of some 63,000 assisted. This includes the distribution of 1,500sacks of millet; 500 units of children's feeding
formula; and medicines such as oral re-hydration tablets.
The total budget for this material is$90,050 - which includes the cost of supplies, labor and transportation and the Association
for Peace and Solidarity is seeking support for$85,650.

writes as a white, male Lutheran pastor with adeep sense of compassion and honesty. Lookwhat he says about us as Americans in the
article below.Sermons need texts; so this text is fromEphesians 4:25. Type the phrase "we aremembers one of another" into your Internetsearch engine, and you'll sight 23,800 uses ofthe phrase or at least mine found that many. Not a biblical theologian or even technically atheologian at all, however, I have to say that Iremember enough to know that metaphors froma specific religion do not translate easily into
trans- and non-religious settings. Somembers(of the body of Christ) in the NewTestament can only be used analogously whenwe think of "members" of the body politic, orof global society, or of one nation. Withinthose limits, let us proceed.
Some years ago it's tucked in mymemory book, not my journals at ahistorian's convention, a presenter spoke about
the mass of southern Protestant clergy justprior to 1861. Almost to a person he wassetting us up they came across as moral, devout, pastoral, learned, caring, informed, andgenerous preachers. And also to a person theydefended human slavery, claiming that it was aresponse to divine mandates and divine will, biblically authorized.
That evening, some of us gathered andsmarted off: "How could they have been soblind?" Then the wisest one among us had usall write on a piece of paper what we thoughtwould make people a century from now ask ofus: "How could you have been so blind?"What are we overlooking? To a person, withvariations, the response was: "How can we so
blithely settle for the development and geneignoring of a permanent urban and rural undclass?" The pro-Confederacy preachers had
lacked proper ideas, will, imagination, andresources. So did, and do, we.The images left over from Katrina a
three weeks ought to refresh those of us whassessed things that way. Yes, the privilegeand underprivileged and unprivileged alikesuffer(ed). Yet it was manifestly the hugenumber of poor, a number not unique to NeOrleans and the devastated area, who wererevealed to be most vulnerable. We the
present writer is not exempt from this judgm have lacked "ideas, will, imagination, andresources" to help alter this situation.
One cheering signal among all this that churches on the scene with their Christiand Jewish suppliers of funds, goods, andpersonnel, were on the front line. So much all of us individualized spiritual seekers whhave and see no place for the "organized
church" or "institutional religion." BaptistsCatholics, Jews, and others opened their dooprovided roofs and walls, and spread goods comfort.
Yet that heart-warming volunteernetwork, crucial to our national survival, isonly part of the "members one of another"theme. Government has often failed us, buthad failed its instrumentalities too, as we cutaxes for the rich and services for the poor. Many had set out to "starve the beast" and nare relearning that we must feed the beast, awe in part depend upon it.
We historians do not tend to beoptimists about the possibilities of humanchange, but we still can chronicle that more

awareness, at least for the moment, of the needfor better ideas, will, imagination, andresources may be part of the legacy of thisnational trauma. When Los Angeles quakes, orthe water that supplies Las Vegas runs out, willwe have realized our "membership" better?

A Personal and Pastoral Thank You
What the African American church inNorth America has done since HurricaneKatrina has been nothing short ofphenomenal. Thousands of churches thatwill never make the news have pulled togetherand pooled together to help the devastatedcitizens of New Orleans, Louisiana and
Mississippi. Our efforts have even reachedthose citizens who were affected by thehurricane and the government in the State ofAlabama.
When I was in Indianapolis, Indiana, the week after the hurricane, I learned thatProgressive Baptist Church in Indianapoliswas reaching across the miles to join handswith Freddy Haynes and the Friendship WestBaptist Church, with Jeffrey Johnson and the
Eastern Star Baptist Church of Indianapolis, with Ralph West and The Church WithoutWalls of Houston, Texas to ease the sufferingof our brothers and sisters who were affectedby both the hurricane and the lack of responsefrom the United States government.
When I talked with Freddy Haynes week following the disaster, Friendship Wwas not only housing evacuees. FriendshipWest had already placed 300 persons in newhomes! They had registered hundreds ofchildren for school and they were registerin(as I pointed out to Freddy that they neededimmediately begin to register) those 300families to vote!
Friendship West raised $200,000 othe first Sunday following the disaster (the fSunday in September). This amount of monwas raised in addition to their efforts toward
and for the 300 families that they have placein apartments, the jobs that they have been ato find for displaced persons and the schoolregistrations that they have undertaken. Thstory ofFriendship West can be replicatedand duplicated by thousands of other churchthat have done just what they have done.
Marcus Cosby and the members ofWheeler Avenue Baptist Church turned th
facilities into temporary quarters for persowho had to evacuate. The members ofWheeler (like the members ofFriendshipWest) have been assisting in finding newhomes and living arrangements for personswho had to evacuate the hurricane-hit statesThe members ofWheeler have also beenplacing children in schools and opening uphomes to help those who are victims of natuand the governments irresponsibility.
Trinity Church because of you! has raised $100,000 to help our denominatioprovide direct assistance to the churches andfamilies affected in New Orleans, in Louisiain Mississippi and in Alabama. TrinityChurch has raised an additional $100,000 t

help Dillard University, one of ourdenominations schools since the 1860s!
Members of our church have driven toLouisiana to bring people up. Members of ourchurch have hosted families (and are stillhosting families). Members of our church havehelped families to relocate and to begin newlives.
Members of our Mens Cell Group, individual members, volunteers and personswho desperately want to be The church afterchurch have demonstrated through their love, their concern, their care and their giving of
their time, their sustenance and their financialresources what it means to be sons anddaughters of the Most High God!
What you have done wont make thenews like the big name stars who hostbenefits and who raise millions. What youhave done, however, will make the LambsBook of Life, and for that I am grateful. I amgrateful to you and I am grateful to God.
I am grateful that you have shown howimportant it is to be the people of God whenwe are most needed. I am grateful to God forgiving me such a loving congregation to standwith me In the storm!
Gratefully yours,
Pastor Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.
From Murder to ConcentrationCamp!
The month of September has been an
incredible month for African Americans inthe United States of AmeriKKKa. Citizensthis country and people all over this world hwatched incredulously as the lack ofgovernmental response has murderedthousands of African Americans who are poand who had no way out of the watery gravthat could have been avoided.
Mercenaries from Israel were brougin to protect white property. Black Water (thguys who ran Abu Ghraib Prisons) werebrought in as mercenaries to protect whiteproperty. White property was protected and
black lives were lost! The evacuees from New Orleans, fr
Mississippi and from Alabama have beenspread out all over the country. Those hereTinley Park have run away from murder andended up in a concentration camp!
As of second Sunday, the men of ouchurch who went out to Tinley Park to provservices were denied access to the evacuees
They were not allowed into the facility whethe guests were being housed. I should not housed, I should say held!
The dozens of blacks who went toTinley Park on the second weekend of themonth were denied access to the people whneeded help the most. Does this sound likeJapanese being put into concentration campOr am I just being paranoid?
This week I asked our elected offici
of African American decent to intervene in matter. Hopefully, by the time you get thisbulletin in your hand, intervention will havetaken place!

The disasters in the Gulf of
Mexico and the Persian Gulf both speak to
one single solitary issue that America hasyet with which to deal. That issue is
articulated best by William Greider in his
editorial column in The Nation. The
issue is, Must the country continue to
give precedence to private financial gain
and market determinism over human lives
and broad public values? In other words,
will this nation continue to prioritizeprofits over people?
The Iraq war has senselessly taken
over 2000 American lives, and over
100,000 Iraqi lives simply because some
rich white privileged men want to control
some oil. Therefore, innocent lives are
sacrificed so that the rich get richer.
In New Orleans, the lack ofassistance from the government to aid its
own people has caused countless
thousands to die or be displaced.
Meanwhile the feeding frenzy has already
begun as the greed of gentrification is
already on the table. One investor has
authorized his agent to spend $10,000,000
in New Orleans to purchase lands
devastated by the broken levees. Again,
the privileged are profiting, and going to
profit off of the perilous predicament of
the poor.
Now no bid contracts for clean
are being given to the buddies of Bush,
while those who lived there are leftwithout any means of living. While
investors are talking about rebuilding N
Orleans, parents are separated from
children, and loved ones from each othe
not knowing if they are dead or alive.
New Orleans was 30% under th
poverty level. Who will invest in ensur
that those persons will have a home toreturn to once the city is open again,
especially when government officials
openly state that God cleaned out the
projects through the hurricane and
breaking of the levees?
The thread woven through both
Gulf crises is the intentional and blatan
disregard for human life unless you areprivileged.

Stewardship
So Many Bills and So Little Money
Every week or two, or at least monthly,
comes the task, often unpleasant and evendisheartening, of paying the household bills. Perhapswe pray, O Lord, why are there so many bills andso little money? Then we write checks until themoney is gone. That is a frustrating experience.
How often do we reflect on the blessingsGod has given us that we may repay our obligations? He has blessed us - the gas provides heat, theelectricity operates the lights to see. The groceriesnourish us. The list goes on. Yet, we grumble andare downcast in paying bills.
Recently, I read a little prayer ofthanksgiving, of repentance, of hope that puts bill-paying into proper perspective of another of themany blessings our God in His infinite wisdomprovides for us. May we pray it in peace as we growin our stewardship of all God gives us.
A Bill-Paying Prayer
Lord, as I begin this task of paying these obligations,
give me a grateful heart. You have given me the
health and the employment to be able to earn this
money. Through the payment of these obligations
you are also at work in providing for others.
I confess that I have not been faithful in my
stewardship this month. I ask for your forgiveness
and pray that by the strength of your Holy Spirit, Iwill grow in my stewardship.
