ExODUS 5:2223; 6:18 (The Message)2223 Moses went back to God and said, My

Master, why are you treating this people so

badly? And why did you ever send me? From

the moment I came to Pharaoh to speak in your

name, things have only gotten worse or thispeople. And rescue? Does this look like rescue to

    you?

1God said to Moses, Now youll see what Ill do

to Pharaoh: With a strong hand hell send them

out free; with a strong hand hell drive themout o his land. 26God continued speaking to

Moses, reassuring him, I am God. I appeared to

Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as The Strong God,

but by my name God (I-Am-Present) I was not

known to them. I also established my covenant

with them to give them the land o Canaan, the

country in which they lived as sojourners. But

now Ive heard the groanings o the Israelites

whom the Egyptians continue to enslave and

Ive remembered my covenant. Thereore tell the

Israelites: 68I am God. I will bring you out rom

under the cruel hard labor o Egypt. I will rescue

you rom slavery. I will redeem you, interveningwith great acts o judgment. Ill take you as my

own people and Ill be God to you. Youll know

that I am God, your God who brings you out

rom under the cruel hard labor o Egypt. Ill

bring you into the land that I promised to give

Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and give it to you asyour own country. I AM God.

and said, I need to return to my relatives who

are in Egypt. I want to see i theyre still alive.

Jethro said, Go. And peace be with you.

19 God said to Moses in Midian: Go. Return toEgypt. All the men who wanted to kill you are

dead. 20 So Moses took his wie and sons and

put them on a donkey or the return trip to

Egypt. He had a rm grip on the sta o God.

JOHN 9:111(NRSV)1As he walked along, he saw a man blind rom

birth. 2 His disciples asked him, Rabbi, who

sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born

blind? 3 Jesus answered, Neither this man nor his

parents sinned; he was born blind so that Godsworks might be revealed in him. 4We must work

    the works of him who sent me while it is day;

night is coming when no one can work. 5As long

as I am in the world, I am the light o the world.6When he had said this, he spat on the ground

and made mud with the saliva and spread the mudon the mans eyes, 7 saying to him, Go, wash in

the pool of Siloam (which means Sent). Then he

went and washed and came back able to see. 8 The

neighbors and those who had seen him beore as

a beggar began to ask, Is this not the man who

used to sit and beg? 9 Some were saying, It is

he. Others were saying, No, but it is someone

like him. He kept saying, I am the man.10 But they kept asking him, Then how were your

eyes opened? 11 He answered, The man called

Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and said to

me, Go to Siloam and wash. Then I went and

    washed and received my sight.

Several years ago, the gospel giant, Shirley Caesar sang a song entitled, No Charge! The theme

o the song was her trying to explain to her son how much she loved him and how much she

did or him at no charge.

Her son had given her a list o his chores and the cost o each chore like taking out the garbage

for a week 50 cents; cleaning my room for a week $10.00.He totaled up his weeks work and told his mother what he was charging her. She then wrote out

a long list or him. On her list were things like caring or him when he was sick, sitting up with him

all night, xing breakast every day, making sure he was clothed and taken care o and her total was

    no charge!

For thirty-six years you have supported my ministry and as I depart from the Ofce of Senior

Pastor, I want to say to you, No Charge!I want you to celebrate my thirty-six years without having

    to pay.

For thirty-six years I have not had affairs that charge members of the church to attend. We are

having worship services each night during my last week here at the church and there is no charge

    or those worship services.

We will lit up oerings each night to cover the cost o fying in our guest ministers and their hotel

accommodations, but those are oerings, and everybody is not giving the same thing in an oering.

It is not a charge. We are not chargingyou to attend those worship services!

On the Friday and Saturday leading up to my last Sunday here, we are having a two-day mini-

Conerence. There is no charge!or that Conerence.

We are asking people who want to eat at the church to give us $10 to cover breakfast and lunch

each day. Several of our members have already paid $25 and $40 for the Conference and we have the

receipts or your registration to that Conerence.

We will give your money back to you today, i you come to the table and bring your receipt. I youdo not have your receipt, we have a copy o the receipts o those who paid and we will give you the

    extra money back.

Each week we sell dinners at our church for $6. That is not a fundraiser. For at least twenty-ve

years I have called them fun-raisers. Our meal times are ellowship times and un times. The cost is

only to cover the expenses o the ood.

As the kids have been saying now or about ten years, I aint going out like that! I am not goingout charging you anything but the cost o the ood. The people who are preparing the ood are

doing it out o love or me and I am not charging you.

    No CHARge!

The people who will be serving that day are doing it reely because o their appreciation o my

ministry. I am not going to kick you in the ace by charging you to pay those who are working

reely. We are only asking you to cover the cost o the ood.

I am sorry about the mix-up. I am sorry about those o you who were told that you could not

attend the Conerence i you did not pay. There is no chargeor the Conerence!

I you do not want to eat on either day, then you simply will not have a receipt, nor will you be

able to present your receipt to the servers, so that you can enjoy the meals that they have prepared.

I you only intend to attend the sessions at the Conerence, there is no charge!I you are

attending the Conerence and intending to eat, the only cost we are asking or is to cover the cost o

the ood or each meal that you eat.

I am sorry about the mix-up. I am sorry about the conusion.

I have tried to stay away rom the planning o my own retirement celebration, but when I ound

out that members were being told they had to pay and/or that the church was charging them to

attend a Conerence celebrating my ministry, I blew a gasket! Please orgive me.

I also ound out that while I was at Howard University a gala was announced in celebration o

my thirty-six years. THERE WILL BE NO GALA!

I would not charge members to come and say Thank you to me. I am the one who should be

    saying Thank You to you.

I am saying Thank You to you and I am thanking God or the privilege o having been able to

serve you or thirty-six years. To say goodbye to me, please remember this. There is, No Charge!

In the words of Martin Lawrence, Now, run and tell that!

Last week at the eleven oclock service I invited the Sanctuary Choir to join me in choosingThe Pastor over The Patriots. I am now making that same invitation to you.Tonight is my last Baptismal Service as Senior Pastor. Tonight is my last Communion Service as

    Senior Pastor.

I am inviting you to come and share with me on my last Communion Sunday rather than spending

money you do not have to go watch the Patriots and to party with olk who have no vested interest

    in the Patriots.

Tonight, millions o Arican Americans will be betting, making bets, collecting money they won

rom bets, celebrating, drinking and having a great time because the Boston Patriots are expected to

end a perect season. What has that to do with you?

What has that to do with God? What does that have to do with your church?I am asking you to give up the rst hal o the Super Bowl Game. I am asking you to give up all o

the drinking, partying, laughing and eating.

I am even asking you to consider not spending the money that you are going to spend on Super

Bowl parties today. For many of you this request comes too late!

For others of you, however, I am simply asking you to join me here in the Sanctuary for my

last Baptismal Service and my last First Sunday Communion Service. I look forward to seeing youtonight at ve oclock.

THe ReSulTS of A ReDeeMeD life

    GIVING GUIDELINES FORPRAYERFUL CONSIDERATION

Giving in proportion to what God has done for each of us. Luke 12:48

Giving regularly (weekly, monthly), as encouraged in I Corinthians 16:2Giving rst fruits (or the promised amount) rst: Nehemiah 10:35

    Giving sacricially: I Chronicles 21:24

Giving cheerfully and joyfully: II Corinthians 9:8

Giving to care for the needs of others: Galatians 6:10

GENEROSITY IS RELATIVEGenerosity, o course, is relative. Twenty dollars rom one person is very generous,

rom another, a mere pittance. When it comes to church support, that is why we are

asked not for equal giving, but for equal sacrice. Only the giving individual and

God can judge when there is sacrice.

Stewardship takes all o us into account. The church doesnt just need to receive

money you need to be generous.

LOVE IN DEEDBy this we know love, that He laid down His lie or us; and we ought to lay down our

lives or the brethren. But, i anyone has the worlds goods and sees his brother in need, yet

closes his heart against him, how does Gods love abide in him? Little children, let us not

love in word or speech, but in deed and in truth. I John 3:16-18.

    TO dO JUsTiCe

Many times, people are concerned about

issues as long as the issue is in the

spotlight, or the headlines. As soon as

the light is taken o, so is the interest in the issue.

Thirty months ater the horrors o Hurricane

Katrina, and the broken levees were televised orall to see, there are people who still have no where

to live because o the eects o Hurricane Katrina.

Some amily members still do not know whether

loved ones are dead or alive. There are still amilies

separated rom one another. And, the government

is still not doing enough to help those displaced by

this disaster. In 2005, people affected and displaced by

Hurricane Katrina testied beore a congressional

panel as to the treatment received during the

disaster, and even now, ater some have been

allowed to return. One woman testied that

those who have returned are now living under

martial law in their neighborhoods. She statedthat people can walk around the French Quarter

drunk until 1:45 a.m., but in the areas populated

by Black people, troops are there to ensure that

no one is on the street after 9:00 p.m. One elderly

community leader stated that many o the public

housing units were boarded up with steel boards,

so that people cant even go back and gather whatis left of their belongings. In December 2007,

citizens of New Orleans public housing were

made aware that their homes would be torn down.

While no bid contracts are being given to Bushs

buddies to clean up New Orleans and the Gulf

Coast, amilies are separated, and amilies lands

are being portioned out. In act, one investor has

sent his agent to New Orleans and authorized him

to spend up to $10,000,000 in New Orleans to

    purchase lands devastated by levees.

This week, the ederal courts dismissed a suit

against the Army Corps o Engineers brought

by residents of New Orleans who claim that no

investment was made in the levees to secure themas being sae. While the judge dismissed the case,

he chided the Army Corps or ailure to protect

the city, but cited the Flood Control Act of 1928,

which protect the government when food control

projects, such as levees, break. Once again, the

citizens of New Orleans have searched for justice

in the country to which they pay taxes. Yet,again, they have been denied justice. Not only

were peoples lands and homes sold and being

sold, but displaced citizens voting rights were

not protected. New Orleans was 30% under the

poverty level. This means that some people were

unable to evacuate. It also means that some will

have nothing upon their return, i they are ableto return at all. Serious advocacy needs to take

place around these issues. I urge you to call your

senator or congressman today, and demand that

steps be taken to ensure airness in the treatment

o those aected by Katrina. I you have not

taken advantage o early voting, please be sure on
