Transition from Primary to
Secondary School
2020
Name
My Primary School
My New Secondary School
This is your booklet about moving to a new school. It will help to prepare you for your move from Primary School to Waseley Hills High School in September 2020. The move to High School will be exciting. But at times you might also feel a bit nervous, as the move will involve some changes and new experiences. Most people worry about changes, especially big ones. Knowing what to expect, talking about your worries and having a plan to manage anything that seems difficult can make changes a lot easier to cope with. There will be lots of things that are different at your new school but you will be surprised at how much will be very similar or the same. This booklet is for you to use at school and for you to talk about at home with your family. It will hopefully explain a lot about High School, answer some of your questions and help to prepare you for the move to leave your primary school and move on to a new secondary school. Take a look!
The Timetable
One of the first pieces of information you will be given is your timetable. Just like your current school timetable, it’s very important because it tells you:
Which lessons you have each day
What time each lesson starts and finishes
Which room each lesson is in
The timetable will also let you know which teacher you will have for each subject. You are already used to having some different teachers at Primary School. At High School you will have more teachers. Your timetable will have the name of the lesson, the initials of the teachers and the room number. Waseley uses a two-week timetable which will probably be new to you. There are signs in every classroom telling you if it is Week 1 or Week 2. You will have 5 different lessons every day and some will be in special rooms. For example, Biology, Chemistry and Physics will usually take place in a science laboratory. ICT will take place in an ICT suite. Teaching assistants will be there in lessons to give you help you when you need it.
Timetable Practice
Study the example timetable from Waseley Hills High School and see if you can spot the differences from your current school timetable:
Look carefully to see which way you read your new timetable: Is it from top to bottom or from left to right?
Is that the same or different from your current school?
What happens first thing in the morning?
What time do lessons start?
What time is break?
What time is lunchtime?
What times do you go to your Mentor Group?
Finding Your Way Around School
Most new High School students feel a little scared about going to a school, which is so much bigger than their old school. They feel worried about getting lost, or being late for a lesson because they’re not sure of where the room is.
You have no need to feel worried because the staff will help you find the right rooms. A map can also help because it shows where all the different rooms are and you can easily see the quickest way to get there.

Sometimes we can change how we feel just by changing how we think about things. Changing our thoughts can help us feel better so our bodies stay relaxed and we can do more things.
Secondary school will be
terrible. It will be too
hard and I won’t be able
to do the homework. I
won’t make any friends.
I don’t want to go.
I can’t wait to go to my
new school - new
interesting subjects,
more friends to choose
from, more staff to help
me, the next step to
achieving my dreams.

Final Thoughts!
Everyone feels nervous and maybe excited when they are starting something new.
It is OK to ask questions.
It is OK to not know what to do all the time.
Your teacher and teaching assistants will help you. You can ask them for help or ask them a question if you are unsure about something.
