British Party Struggles

In the early 1920s in Britain the Labor party became more powerful then the Liberal party.People began to support the Labor party after the pushed to change to socialism but as they came to power the Labor party started to supported the middle-class business instead of socialism. As that Labor party faltered, many people switched to the Conservative party with the new support the Conservative party remained in power for most of the 1920s. In 1926 more then 3 million workers went on strike. After the strike the Conservative party passed laws to limit workers right to strike

Irish Independence

In1914 parliament passed a home-rule bill. 1916, a small militant Irish group revolted against British rule. Irish Republican Army went to war against the British forces and any of there supporters. In 1922, Ireland and Britain reached a agreement.

France's Troubled Peace  

After World War I France had many political divisions. Many different parties fought for power. These parties ranged from conservatives to communists. A series of always changing governments ruled France for most of the time from World War I to World War II.

U.S. Isolation• The radicals and Bolsheviks Revolution in Russia set off a "Red Scare" in in 1919-1920.

• Poll• Congress passed laws that limited immigrants coming to America from Europe.

• ice started expelling many suspected foreign born radicals.

• Americans wanted to exclude new comers.

Foreign Policy

• The peace that was made was fragile• The League of Nations was powerless to stop

any aggression

• Many people worked for peace despite the disagreements

Maginot LineThe Maginot line was made by the French on there boarders that boarded Germany and Italy that was heavily fortified with artillery gun placements, tanks obstacles, machine gun posts and so on.

But when the Germans attacked it failed because the Germans avoided it, by simply going around it.

Peace Agreements

• In 1925, European Nations signed a series of treaties at Locarno

• These treaties settled the disputes between Germany's borders and everyone around them

 

• The Locarno treaties symbolic a new era of peace

Post War Economics

The economics were at a very low point Germany owed money to France and England, but they owed money to America, but in Europe Germany never paid and the since they were relying on Germany France and England were in dept and short on money. While Germany was completely down in the shysterand England wasn't to far behind...

...but France was starting a recovery and America was doing just great getting money from every one and not paying any one.

OverproductionIn 1920, the wealth created was not shared evenly. Farmers and unskilled workers were on the bad end. Prices were very high during the war for raw materials and agricultural products. After the war the demand and prices fell.People earned less so they bought less while the technology allowed for more production. This led to overproduction where the products produced was more then the demand for them.

This led to a loss of jobs because factories cut back on there production.

The Great Depression

• The economic collapse that started in America then  spread globally.

•  People lost jobs & couldn't afford food or shelter.

• Stock Markets crashed.• Businesses & Banks closed.

 

• U.S. raised tariffs to an ultimate high which led to foreign countries to retaliate and raise their tariffs causing Global World Trade to sink.

Finance - The management of money matters including the circulation of money, loans, investments, and banking.

• Prices on New York Stock Exchange at all time high

• Eager investors acquired stocks through risky methods

 

Federal Reserve - Central banking system of the United States, which regulates banks.

• Federal Reserve raised interest rates in 1928 to slow the run on the stock market.

• It didn't work, instead the higher interest rates made people nervous about borrowing money and investing.

Democracies Reaction

• Governments around the world tried to lift the depression

• Britain set up a Coalition government, but the government failed and by 1931 every 1 in 4 workers were unemployed

• The depression took longer to make an impact in France. In response, parties united behind the socialist leader Leon Blum.

• Strikes brought down the Blum government. democracy survived, but as a country they lacked strong leadership

New Deal- Massive package of economic and social programs by creating jobs and helping farmers

- Government was more directly involved in people's lives by creating social security system provided pension for elderly and other benefits- As the New Deal was being put into place a natural disaster occurred causing the New Deal to fail at ending the Great Depression
