Connecticut Mastery Test Begin Next Week ‘s The Connecticut Mastery Test will be administered at Tolland Intermediate School

during the first two weeks of March. One test will be administered each day to students

in grades three, four and five. A complete schedule is located in this edition of the

Digital Backpack.

Lockdown On Thursday February 28, T.I.S. will hold a lockdown. For more information please refer to the letter located in this edition of the Digital Backpack.

Report Card Date Change Given the record snow fall these past few months and the interruptions to the school days, we are changing the end date of the second trimester. The second trimester grades will close on March 8, 2013, and the report cards will go home in your child’s backpack on March 13, 2013. The early release day on March 6, 2013 will remain for parent teacher conferences. Thus, we will conduct a parent teacher conference without a finished report card. Dear Families,

In collaboration with the Tolland Director of Emergency Management and the Resident State

Trooper’s office, the Tolland Public Schools developed a plan to manage many types of

emergencies. Although we cannot anticipate every single problem associated with an

unexpected emergency, it is important to have all school employees and students prepared in

order to minimize confusion should such an event occur in our community.

We will be conducting a lockdown drill at Tolland Intermediate School on Thursday, February

28, 2013 at approximately 2:00. It is important for students to practice the skills that will help

keep them safe in the event of a serious emergency. Students and staff will know ahead of time

when the lockdown drill will take place. The teachers will discuss the safety procedures with

their students. The drill will last approximately fifteen minutes, a little longer than the average

fire drill. A lockdown drill does not involve any loud alarms. All instructions will be given over

the PA system.

We will explain to our students that sometimes emergencies can happen that require them to

listen carefully to the teachers and follow all of their directions in order to keep everyone safe.

An emergency can happen at school, in the neighborhood, on the highway, or at one of the other

schools. During the lockdown drill, the teacher will close and lock their classroom door and the

students will move to the safest area of the classroom where they will sit quietly. There will be

no movement in the classroom or hallway. No one will be allowed in or out of the building

during the lockdown drill.

We believe the best way to deal with an emergency is through advanced preparation. We want

our Tolland Intermediate School families to feel confident that our school provides our students

and staff with a safe and secure environment.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call us @ 860-870-6885.

Hints for Success on the CMT

1. Have a Positive Attitude Approach each test as you'd approach a giant jigsaw puzzle. It might be tough, but you can do it! A positive attitude goes a long way toward success. 2. Get a good night’s sleep

Remember, your brain and body need sleep to function well, so don't stay up late the night before a test! 3. The Morning of the Test Did you know that you think better when you have a full stomach? So don't skip breakfast the morning of the test. 4. Test Time Read the instructions! You want to make sure you are marking answers correctly. Check the number you are bubbling 5. I'm Stuck! Those tricky problems can knock you off balance. Don't get worried or frustrated. It’s alright to reread a question to make sure you understand it, and then try to solve it the best way you know how. If you're still stuck, circle it and move on. You can come back to it later. What if you have no idea about the answer? Look at all your answer choices and make the best guess you can. 6. Multiple-Choice Questions If you’re not sure of the correct answer, start by crossing off the answers that couldn't be right. Then spend your time focusing on the possible correct choices before selecting your answer. 7. Neatness Counts If your 4s look like 9s, it could be a problem. Be sure that your writing is legible and that you erase your mistakes. For machine-scored tests, fill in the spaces carefully; make sure your bubbles are filled in neatly and are dark enough for the machine to read. If you need to erase, make sure you erase your answers thoroughly. 8. I'm Done! Not so fast - when you complete the last item on the test, remember that you're not done yet. First, check the clock and go back to review your answers, making sure that you didn't make any careless mistakes (such as putting the right answer in the wrong place or skipping a question). Spend the last remaining minutes going over the hardest problems before you turn in your test. Remember, there are no prizes for being the first one done. Take your time.

2013 CMT SCHEDULE (Testing starts at 9:15am**)

**Please note: The CMT will begin at 9:15 each morning. It is important for your child to be on time,

so they can be present as teachers review directions for each test. Once testing has begun, students

who are late will not be permitted to enter their classroom until the testing session has ended. Any

student that has missed a test must be administered a make-up exam. Please keep this in mind when

making appointments for your child. Late morning or afternoon appointments would be preferable.

Be an Active and Educated Participant in the Budget

Process.

This is a critical time for the Tolland community. It is the time when our town leaders are actively

putting plans and budget requirements in place for the coming year. And similar to how we each

manage our own households or businesses efficiencies are being sought. Priorities are being set.

Tough decisions are being made that will have short and long-term impact on the town, its reputation

and its residents and businesses.

There are some very difficult questions on the table. For example:

How do we maintain a positive and sought-after educational system that continues the reputation of a stellar retention and graduation rate, level of preparedness for higher education, and college entrance rate AND maximize efficiencies without advancing a trend of eliminating teaching staff that support programs and options, like sports, music and foreign languages?

How do we sustain the health of our town’s infrastructure in an environment of increasing costs compounded by the impact of unusually severe weather patterns and potential federal and state government budget proposals?

This is the time that busy residents need to find the time to be involved. Now is the time to help our

town leaders prioritize efforts that can help address these questions while sustaining the health,

reputation and affordability of this gem of a community.

Mark your calendars for these TWO important dates and plan to attend:

1. The Town Council and Board of Education Joint Meeting on Tuesday, March 5 at

7:00pm, 6th floor Hicks Building.

2. The Public Hearing on the Town Manager’s recommended budget on Wednesday,

March 27 at 7:30pm in the Tolland High School auditorium.

Education is the foundation upon which the future of our community is built.

The time is now. Please consider this seriously.
