After School Pick up Parking

When picking up your child at the end of the school day, please do not park next to the yellow curb along the rear of the building. The yellow curbing indicates that the area is a designated no parking zone.

1:1 District Chromebook Initiative

All Tolland students in grades three through eight will be provided with a district Chromebook. These district Chromebooks will be required for every student. Students will need the district Chromebooks as opposed to personally owned devices. Emails outlining the 1:1 initiative have been sent to parents and guardians of fourth and fifth grade students. An email will be sent to third grade families on January 22. The only costs associated with the devices are an optional insurance policy and an optional hardshell protective case.

Unified Arts Classwork

Please check your child’s progress via the PowerSchool Portal. Any student with any outstanding assignments in unified arts class (art, music, library and PE) will be offered extra time to hand in missing assignments. Staff will be available to assist any student with make-up work as needed.

School Cell Phone Policy

We have recently experienced some minor issues with student cell phones usage in school. Below is the school policy regarding cell phones in school. The policy is consistent with that of Tolland Middle School.

All electronic devices are to be turned off and stored away for the duration of the school day (8:30 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.). This includes, but is not limited to cell phones, music players, video systems, and video game systems. Cell phones and cell phone cameras that are misused anywhere on school grounds and/or on any school field trip or function will result in disciplinary action.

FROM THE MATH LAB: Happy New Year everyone. We hope your winter is going well and

you are able to enjoy some safe indoor and outdoor activities with your families. The second cycle of math intervention is up and running and the students are doing a great job. It is so wonderful to see how flexible the students are moving from remote learning to in-person instruction. They should really be complimented.

Third graders are focusing on finding the missing number in addition and subtraction equations. They are using all types of strategies, but the one they really seem to enjoy the most is taking hops and jumps on the number line. We are really impressed with their growth.

Fourth graders have started solving word problems that are getting a little tricky. We are using bar models to figure out some tough problems and the fourth graders are really stepping up their problem solving. They are learning to ask themselves, “Does my answer make sense?” when they think they have found the answer. It is an awesome way to check their work.

Fifth graders have transitioned from multi-digit multiplication to some multi-digit division and some work on fractions is right around the corner. These fifth graders are really showing some excellent skills in computation, which is fantastic to see. Their confidence is growing, and their intervention teachers and math teachers are so proud of the effort they are putting in each day.

Congratulations to the students who completed the winter Greg Tang New Year’s Challenge. We had quite a few students who completed it over break. If you have forgotten to pass it in, it is not too late. Just bring it to your teacher and they will pass it along to the math intervention teachers.

A FEW NOTES FROM STUDENT SERVICES:

News from Student Services

Developmental Guidance Classes

Fourth Grade: Mindfulness

In Fourth Grade developmental guidance, students have been introduced to

Mindfulness. Over the next several weeks, students will be learning more about

what mindfulness is and will have the opportunity to practice various mindfulness

techniques. During extra special, Mrs. Hurley’s class had a chance to practice a

mindful rainstorm where we spent some quiet moments making thunderstorm

sounds with our hands. In addition, we practiced snake breathing.

In regular specials with fourth grade, we have been exploring several other topics.

In mid-January, students participated in a lesson about Who We Are. We watched

a video about what makes up someone’s identity. We discussed that your culture,

language, appearance, likes and dislikes, and values make up your identity. We

then spent some time exploring who we are by identifying three items that we have

that are important to us and why. We then shared our drawings and writing with

Page 10: T.I.S. Digital Backpack February 1, 2021

each other to start to deepen our understanding of one another.

Hawk Student Ambassadors

Hawk Student Ambassadors held our next virtual meeting in January.

During this meeting, we discussed our school-wide trait for January, Empathy.

Students participated in a lesson on empathy through Nearpod. We discussed

examples of empathy and how to show someone empathy at school or at home. We

had some wonderful conversations!

Students were then invited to create a short video or writing piece on what

empathy means to them. Each video was shown on the video announcements!

Great job promoting empathy, Hawk Ambassadors!

Introducing practicum student Rae Slattery! Mrs. Slattery will be working

with Mrs. Bishopric for the remainder of the school year as a school counseling

practicum student. She will be visiting one day per week, from her graduate

program at UConn. Mrs. Slattery brings a host of experience with her to T.I.S and

Page 11: T.I.S. Digital Backpack February 1, 2021

is looking forward to learning a lot and working with our students! Any questions

regarding Mrs. Slattery can be directed to Ashly Bishopric,

Being part of the band means that each week, students have SMALL GROUP

instruction time whether you are an in-person learner or a remote learner. This

year, we are using a rotating pull-out schedule during the school day. 4th grade

Band Students will have their Band class on a fixed day of the week (either

Tuesday or Friday) but the time of the class will change weekly. We are using

special music masks and bell covers on our instruments when we play in school

just like Band members in TMS and THS. Band is a graded class. 60 minutes per

week of Home Practice is recommended for success and is an important

commitment for students to make.

Any questions? Contact Mrs. Marchesani: [email protected]

Grade 5 Band: The 5th Grade Band small group classes have been meeting in

person in Mrs. Marchesani’s room and remote from home students are included in

the schedule. We are using a rotating pull out schedule so Band students do not

miss the same class every week. We are using special music masks and bell covers

on our instruments when we play in school just like Band members in TMS and

Page 16: T.I.S. Digital Backpack February 1, 2021

THS. Our playing eighth notes review is going very well! “Regal March” is

taking shape in small groups. Students have completed the Concert Bb “Scale

Concert Eb scale preps. The Concert Eb Scale Preps will help with learning

“Montego Bay” and many other songs in our Standard of Excellence book. .

Inclement Weather policy: On early dismissal or late start days, small group Band
