One secondary placement must be served in one of the teachables.

One session may be in the other teachable or in a 7/8 classroom (teaching all subjects).

If you prefer to be placed in a Gr. 7/8 classroom, please select

that option provided on the form (not checking this off does not ensure that you will

not have a Grade 7 or 8 placement)

Please note that your secondary placement in a high school may not be entirely in

your teachable. For example, you may be teaching two History periods along with Careers/Student Success, or Social Science. This will not affect your certification. It is also common to have two associates.

Choosing OE3, you applied to the compulsory components of:Educ 4284 YA Environmental Science (1.0 FCE); Educ 3218 FA OE3 Community Service (0.25 FCE); and Educ 3219 WA OE3 Authentic Group Project (0.25 FCE)

Students need to register in the methods course for their other teachable.

OE3 Placements: Select one placement with a partnership board from the drop-down list (Fall board

selection)

For the other placement choice, select “Outdoor Education Placement”

(under the Winter board selection, as the OE3 placement options for the fall session are

very limited). You do not have to decide on the particular OE3 sites when this main placement form

is being submitted. You can think about and research your options (do not contact the site directly) over the summer and submit your top 5 choices in September.

The rules and regulations of the regular placement also apply to

the OE3 placement. OE3 teacher candidates can expect to participate in weekend excursions, overnight field trips, and after-

education activities. Such additional hours will not be used to meet the essential requirements of the 25-day placement. Many sites, in particular Outdoor Education Centres, may have irregular hours (ie: Tuesday –

Saturday) or later placement dates than the regularly scheduled

dates due to a later March Break (ie: Private Schools).

Project Journey (through OPP) may provide free transportation (to/from) and a $100 weekly stipend (for each of the five weeks). The community will provide

free accommodations. In return, teacher candidates (Grades 1 to 12) must plan/lead extra-curricular activities on Saturdays for the duration of the placement. This funding has not yet been confirmed for 2018/2019.

Activities offered on Saturdays have included: arts and crafts, volleyball, broomball, basketball, yoga, baking/cooking, and hockey were offered to students from Grades 2 to 12.

Teacher candidates must complete a proposal to be considered eligible for financial support. They must also provide proof of successful teaching (one practicum for one year students, three practicums

for two year students).

Pikangikum

placement is an option only for the final placement of each program.

Pik

hires several TCs

yearly. They have 23 elementary classrooms alone. Each classroom has a para-professional assistant in addition to a classroom teacher.

Your Placement Board Selection Your Placement Board Selection SelectionSelection of a Catholic School Board for Placementof a Catholic School Board for Placement

When Thinking About Selecting a Catholic School Board for placement….

•Teacher candidates selecting a Catholic school board for placement should be eligible for employment with a Catholic board. Check the website of the board in which you are

interested for future employment. Please note requirements vary from board to board as to their required documents. Some request pastoral letters, faith portfolios, baptismal certificates, etc. You do not need to submit these documents for placement; just be aware of what is required for future employment.

•Candidates should be prepared to integrate Catholicity throughout the curriculum.

•This means when completing a placement within a Catholic school, you will be expected to do the following:

teach religion

lead the class in the Lord's Prayer

teach the Stations of the Cross

attend and participate in religious services (may be in school or church)

participate in Catholic celebrations and/or celebrate Catholic holy days etc.

•if this is of interest to you, teacher candidates may choose to register for the Education elective course:

Special Instructions

For those selecting the Thunder Bay Catholic DSB, deliver the items listed below to your 4490/4499 course instructor by the first week of classes.

The originals will be delivered to the Board Office for their review. The originals will be returned to you prior to placement; however, it is still highly recommended to obtain two original PRC/VSS’s

from your police service.

If you are selecting both fall and winter placements with Thunder Bay Catholic DSB, the PRC/VSS you obtained for the fall will be accepted for the entire school

year.•

If you are selecting Thunder Bay Catholic DSB for your winter session placement only (fall session with another Board), you should still deliver your original documentation the first week of classes in September; otherwise you will be required to re-apply for an updated PRC/VSS so that it is current within 6 months of the winter session placement.

Hand in first week of classes in September:•

Your original police record/vss

check (PRC/VSS)•

A photocopy of your picture ID

And in a separate envelope (marked “photocopies”) also hand in the following:•

Teacher candidates cannot be placed at a school where an immediate relative currently attends or is currently employed, ie: your children, your parents, your partner, your partner's children, your siblings, step-family. You may still be placed within that board, just not those particular school(s). Also identify any other relatives who may not be covered in this list but with whom you have a close relationship.

You should also identify any immediate relatives that you have who are currently in the Education Program with you this year.

Should we become aware of a conflict at any time that a candidate did NOT disclose, the placement request will be cancelled and may need to be completed

the following year, and subject to additional fees.

If the placement is underway it will be cancelled, or if was already completed will be deemed unsuccessful.

You should also identify any close family friends, or others where you have developed a relationship that goes beyond the professional level.

If you are not certain of the relationship contact the Faculty.

NO requests for changes will be accepted. The only option available to a candidate is a “deferred”

placement which will make you ineligible to graduate in May of the current academic year. This option is subject to an application,

fees and approval.

If you do list preferred schools when submitting your placement form, note that schools named are geographic markers ONLY which may or may not be used by the boards in their placement process.

The University & partnership boards reserve the right to arrange

appropriate alternate placements anywhere within a board’s geographic boundaries. This can mean 1-2 hrs. travel each way or more if relying on public transit.

In some extreme instances in previous years, teacher candidates have had to rent a vehicle, rent an apartment in a closer location, seek out a carpool, etc.

Confirmed placements are professional commitments which will not be changed should accommodation, transportation, or child care arrangements

fail to materialize.

22

Requested board preferences named in the online submission are

final. CHOOSE CAREFULLY. Do NOT submit your form until you have made a final decision on your partnership

school board.

Boards that cover a large geographic area and/or who have exceptional demands on their resources may be unable to honor your requested communities & may result in you having to find accommodations at your expense to fulfill your confirmed placement obligation.

If a board is unable to arrange the requested placement, the teacher candidate will be contacted and asked to name an alternative partnership board.

Research partnership boards geographic boundaries very carefully. Consider the cost & time implications for your transportation and accommodation. Visit the Faculty of Education’s website for the complete partnership board list: https://www.lakeheadu.ca/education-practicum

this letter.

There are some police services that will not accept our generic letter and will require your name to appear on the letter. If your police service is listed below please contact

On the first day of each placement, you will be asked to show the principal the ORIGINAL (not a copy) of a valid Police Record Check (PRC) from all CPIC databases including a

Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) of the Pardoned Sex Offender database. Some schools may ask you to deliver this document to them prior to placement.

Some OPP Detachments and city police services require us to complete a portion of your application - remember to bring your police "letter" which we will email to you

BEST PRACTICE: •Students should be going to a local police service location or OPP Detachment in the community of their permanent address to request the documentation. (This reduces wait times in most cases, and many police services do not check International addresses)

Request 2 original copies of this documentation when you go to your local police service location or an OPP detachment. If you are applying with Thunder Bay Police, please note since the application is completed online and the Police email you a pdf

document, you may simply print as many copies as you wish.

Remember to bring all ID with you, and to inquire about their application hours before you go (please note Thunder Bay Police application is online).

26

NOTE: It is your responsibility to inquire about turn around times when you request your Police Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening. Every

police service location has varying delivery times.

Apply for ALL of this REQUIRED documentation by June 1, 2018 - prior to your program entrance, or earlier if you have had numerous addresses over the past five years –

this usually adds considerably to the processing times. Waiting too long without considering the standard wait time for results, could mean you do not receive the documentation in time for September. Applying too early may mean the document expires before your first placement. Check with your police service as to their processing times and apply accordingly.

Most candidates will need to be in classrooms in the first week of school for course requirements. Make sure you have processed documents that are in effect for the first week of classes of your Professional Year.

Once you receive this document, keep it in a very secure place. Do not send the documents to our office. 27

OUT OF PROVINCE for minimum of last 12 months?

If you have been living out of province, including out of country, please ensure that you obtain a comparable Police Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Screening documentation, from the police services where you have been residing. Please note that many countries (and also Provinces within Canada) may use different terminology for the vulnerable sector screening. Explain that it is a more in-depth check than a basic police check and that it is required when working with children.

This material may be very useful in helping you obtain the necessary Ontario (or your home province) documentation without undue delay. These documents may

be required to be translated. This is your responsibility.

If the document produced is in another language,

contact the local Canadian Consulate office.

The Canadian Consulate should be able to provide the student with the name of a local Notary Public Office.

Arrange to take the documentation in to the Notary Public Office, to have the document translated.

If you are currently living in Singapore (12 months or longer) please contact me for further details.

Once you receive this document, keep it in a very secure place.

When you go to any police service location for your PBC and VSS,

they must check both Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) and Pardoned Sex Offender databases.

TIPS TO REMEMBER:When you request these documents at a police service location, identify yourself as a teacher

candidate who will be working with vulnerable persons or minors so a “Vulnerable Sector Screening” is necessary.

Be sure to bring the POLICE SERVICE LETTER the LU Faculty of Education has provided to you, when you go to a police service location

A PRC/VSS from police jurisdictions are only good for 6 months from the date of issue so you may need to process twice during your Professional Year (typically when selecting

two different partnership boards). You will need to time your applications so that you have valid documents in time for the first day of each scheduled placement.

It is each B.Ed student’s responsibility (not the Faculty’s) to understand the specific documentation requirements of the school board(s) they have chosen to complete their 2 teaching placements in, and ensure those requirements have been met prior to the first day of placement.

A TB skin test is no longer required by most Boards. Some do still require the TB skin test (ie: Kenora Catholic DSB, Niagara Catholic DSB, Ottawa Catholic DSB). Please check the list of boards to determine your Board’s requirements.

If your Board does require a TB skin test:

Some physicians/clinics may require a letter from the University

stating that a TB test is required. Contact Kathy Matic –

[email protected]

to request this letter.

The TB skin test documentation is good for 1 calendar year from the date of the test.

For Boards that require a TB Skin Test:

The results must be on doctor’s office letterhead or on the medical office’s prescription pad indicating the:

Contact information for the medical facility

The original signature of the practitioner who performed the test.

The results of said test

The cardboard cards that were issued by the Health Units in previous years, are not acceptable.

TB skin tests should be done well enough in advance that should you test positive and require further medical follow-up, it will not prevent you from doing a placement at the scheduled time.
