CORRECTING A MISPERCEPTIONCORRECTING A MISPERCEPTION

Muslims somehow know that they are to somewhat strike a “balance” in their life.




Yet, what do we mean by “balanced”?




Yet, what do we mean by “balanced”?The following are some of the

misperceptions of what some people regard this “balanced life” is, but very much influenced by a secularized worldview – not that of Islam. These are:



[1] COMPARTMENTALIZING between PRIVATE (for ‘RELIGION’) and PUBLIC (Regarded as ‘SECULAR’ – Thus they accept notion to remove or disallow all religious signs, or any religious determination of values and influence to affect general public discourse).



[2] MECHANICAL ALLOCATION between “DEEN” (Religious) AND the “DUNYA” (Worldly) by dichotomising between these two activities. Entertaining some kind of ratio between these viz. perhaps 50:50 … ?



[3] REDUCTIONIST – tendency to disregard the all-encompassing nature of Islam. Usually due to their studying Islam as subjects, and not subjecting themselves to Islam – which should begin by ‘submission’ (surrendering to, and thus by) acknowledging its all-encompassing nature of its guidance as AD-DEEN (AS-SHAAMIL-KAA-MIL).



[4] SECLUSION and false concept of “ZUHD” of pseudo-sufi who misinterprets this concept of “detachment from being affected by the negativity of this world”, as though to mean, we are to cloister ourselves physically – thus falsely teaching to reject every aspect of this world including many favours and bounties of Allah for us within it which Islam views as positive – nay essential.

This is the key to achieving increase bestowal from Allah.

• yet how does one become grateful? What are the important criteria?

1. Acknowledge the true giver, Allah Who is the Bestower of those favours.

2. Learn the value of what is given, no matter how small it may seem to be. Do not take any of these favours for granted.

3. Utilize what is given in accordance to what may please the Giver (i.e. do not abuse the gift), so as not to cause His wrath to befall us.

(Qur’an: An-Nisa’: 4:95) 36

�خ�ل�ق[ ح�س�ن[ �اس� ب �ق� الن و�خ�ال “Be conscious of Allah (TAQWA) wherever you may be, and

follow-up whatever misdeeds you may have committed by doing (more) righteous deeds (as reparation, for it) shall efface them ( i.e. the negative effect of these misdeeds); and interact with people in the best manner of disposition (i.e. adopt a noble character).”

(Hadith reported by Tabrani from Abi Dzar)

(Qur’an: Kahfi: 18:28) 40

affluence) of the Unbelievers through the land deceive thee: Little is it for enjoyment; their ultimate abode is Hell: what an evil bed (to lie on)! On the other hand, for those who fear their Lord, are Gardens with rivers flowing beneath: therein are they to dwell (for ever) a gift,― from the presence of Allah; and that which is in the presence of Allah is the best (bliss) for the righteous.”

(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 196-198) 42

“And thus have We willed you to be a community

of the middle way (ummatan wasotan i.e. justly balanced), so that [with your lives] you might bear witness to the truth before all mankind (shuhadaa-a ‘alan-naas) , and the Messenger as a witness over you.“

(Qur’an: al- Baqarah: 2:143)

Repel (Evil) with what is better: then will he between whom and thee was hatred become as it were thy friend and intimate! And no one will be granted such goodness except those who exercise patience and self-restraint none but persons of the greatest good fortune.”

(Qur’an: Fussilat: 41:33-35)

categories of people. We know and always ask Allah to make us belong to the people of Right Guidance:





“Show (guide) us the straight way. The way of those on whom Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace, NOT Those whose (portion) is not wrath and who go not astray.”

(Qur’an: Fatihah: 1: 6-7)52





"Our Lord! Bestow on us Mercy from Thyself, and dispose of our affair for us in the right way! “

(Qur’an: Kahfi: 18:10)





"Our Lord! Make of us Muslims bowing to Thy "Our Lord!
