Main CharactersThis story takes place in the small town of

Stoneybrook, Connecticut. Kristy is the main character. She is the third oldest and only girl in her family. She and her two older brothers love babysitting their younger brother. Kristy hopes to become a babysitter. Her parents are divorced and Kristy is still getting used to her mom’s boyfriend, Watson. Mary Anne is Kristy's best friend. She is an only child and is trying to become more mature like Kristy. Mary Anne is still trying to make her father understand she is not a baby. Claudia used to be Kristy and Mary Anne's best friend, but now she is into totally different things and has new best friends. When summer starts things change for Claudia. Finally, there is Stacey, who is moving from New York City, leaving the kids she babysits behind.

The ProblemAll these girls have individual situations they are dealing with throughout the

story. Let’s start with Kristy's problem. Kristy's parents are divorced and she never gets to see her father! He moved to Florida when her parents got divorced. Next we will move on to Mary Anne's problem.

Mary Anne has a tough life she never met her mother! Sadly she past away when she was giving birth to Mary Anne. Her father has given her strict rule you would give a 2 year old! Mary Anne is trying to prove to her father that she is not a baby. Claudia has a perfect family perfect friends but something is missing. What could it be?

Last, we have Stacey who has been doing a lot of thinking lately. She has twoChoices. To leave the kids that she babysits and make friends, or stay with the kids she babysits and have no friends. What will she do?

Also… Kristy wants to make a club. Will it happen?

SettingsThe story takes place in Stoneybrook at a few key

places.The School at Stoneybrook where Kristy,

Maryanne, and Claudia go to school. We first see the school on the last day of school.

The Pike Family house. This is a family who has eight kids that Kristy babysits.

Kristy's house, where Mary Anne and Kristy hang out and talk. In Mary Anne’s house there are strict family rules, leaving very little room for fun.

5 Major events Kristy has been asked to babysit for all the Pike children which has been

her babysitting dream. She has only watched three of the children, not all eight! Mrs. Pike suggests Kristy choose a helper to work with her on the job. Who will she choose? Mary Anne, who is not allowed to babysit or Claudia who is allowed but might have plans?

Claudia decides to have a different birthday party than a sleepover this year. It is very hard to decide what party she's going to have because she has made friends other then Mary Anne and Kristy and can’t invite them all to a sleepover. There's a pool next door . She decides she can have a pool party! One thing she has to do is convince her parents. Will she be able to?

Mary Anne and all the kids she and Kristy babysit decide to have a “Kristy Day” as a birthday celebration for her, complete with a parade.

When Kristy, Mary Anne , and Claudia all have babysitting jobs, they decide to have the first babysitters club meeting while the kids are playing with each other. They need four people. Who will be the fourth member?

Stacey moves to Stoneybrook. After having to say goodbye to everyone in New York it’s time for a change .

Solution Only two of the girl’s problems were answered in this first

addition to the Babysitters Club series of books. The first of the two problems addressed that is resolved centers

around Mary Anne. Mary Anne gets treated a little differently over the summer and only has to deal with some of her fathers strict rules.

Stacey makes the right decision to move early with her father and begin to make new friends in Stoneybrook. She even begins to think Stoneybrook is better than her life in New York!
