Fr. Terry Keehan Every year at this time the Archdiocese of Chicago honors parishioners who give of themselves and their talents to serve in parish ministries across entire Arch-diocese. These honors come in the reception of the Christifidelis Award, which takes place at Holy Name Cathedral in a ceremony led by Cardinal Cupich. He, along with the six Auxiliary Bishops, congratulate all awardees. This past Sunday I was honored to ac-company Holy Family’s recipient, Kristen Berryhill, her husband David, her son Andrew and daughter Lauren as she received the 2017 Christifidelis Award. Kristin and her family have served primarily in our Music and Worship Ministering Community. She not only sings, but she helps to coordinate much of our worship music and assists brides and grooms on the selection of, and often the singing of, their wedding music. Kristin adds her warm smile and generous spirit to just about every-thing musical here at Holy Family and exudes a sense of prayerfulness to every liturgy she sings in. David serves as a Eucharistic Minister. Andrew serves in the loft and Lauren often sings with her mother. In addition, at the same ceremony there are a group ministers who are given the Bishop Quarter award. Where Christifidelis honors parishioners in each parish, only one person in each of the six vicariates receives the Bishop Quarter award. Marta Robak from our staff was one of them. Marta ministers in our Family Faith Ministering Community, but through both Holy Family and her parish, St. Ferdinand on the north side of Chi-cago, she has used her many talents and boundless energy to serve the poor. She has traveled to Jamaica each of the past nine years with containers of supplies for the most needy. She has also directed outreach programs here in Chicago to benefit the 120 students attending Divine Mercy School in Kenya. All totaled, Marta has organized and participated in 28 mission trips to foreign countries in the past 11 years and is the leader of Chicago Missionaries for the Poor Support Team. We congratulate her, her husband Mariuscz, and her children Alex and Emelia. Join me in thanking both Kristen and Marta, who are strong examples of service, and who do so much to advance our mission and to build the kingdom here and beyond. Reconciliation is a sacred experience. Jesus knew this and that is why we attribute the start or institution of the Sacrament of Reconciliation to him. We wish to offer MORE times for people to take advantage of the Sacrament. As of January 1 we will offer Reconciliation every Wednesday from 6-6:45 pm in the Reconcilia-tion Room in the back of church. This is the one-on-one experience of the Sacrament that is referred to as Form A. The entire rite is individual and one-on-one with the priest. We believe that this is an appropriate time to offer Reconciliation because it precedes our evening

Mass EVERY Wednesday at 7 pm. We will continue to offer Form B (a Reconciliation Service similar to what we offer in Advent and Lent, which includes a scripture reading, brief homily, group Examination of Conscience and praying the Act of Contrition, and then individual confession and absolution) on the first Saturday of each month in the chapel at 4 pm. THIS FORM IS FULLY APROVED BY THE CHURCH AND IS THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION. In addition, the Sacrament is always offered by appointment and as a group service during the seasons of Advent and Lent. In addition, other local parishes offer the sacrament at various times on Saturdays, but no other parish will offer it at 6 pm on Wednesdays. Please note that our current Reconciliation schedule will remain in effect until January 1. After that THERE WILL BE NO SAC-RAMENT OF RECONCILIATION OFFERED ON THE SECOND, THIRD, FOURTH AND FIFTH SATURDAYS OF EACH MONTH AT 4 PM. It is not too early to mark your calendars for our 2018 Gala on Saturday, February 24 at Concorde Ban-quets in Kildeer. This year’s theme is “La Grande Ball de Versailles.” The evening will spark images of 18th century France and will feature spectacular entertain-ment, great food and drink, dancing, exciting live and silent auction items, a cash class or Paris raffle, plus a live auction. All of these express the vibrant spirit of Holy Family and proceeds benefit all aspects of the mission of our Academy and parish. Please consider supporting the Gala in many ways, including attending, donating an item to the auction, becoming a sponsor, becoming a table captain to fill out a table of 10, and collaborate with friends to pool your resources to bid on one of the spectacular live auction items. If you are curious as to what to wear and for more information, go to our Gala website at www.holyfamilygala.org. Our Gospel passage according to Matthew this weekend tells of Jesus’ direct criticism of the behavior of the religious authorities of his time. He respects the tradition that they represent, but he strongly encour-ages his disciples NOT to follow their example. The final line of the passage helps distinguish between personal humility and personal exaltation. But this statement builds on the previous line that connects greatness and service. As a good friend of mine often says about life, “Just work as hard as you can and the rest will take care of itself.” Obviously, we can all work as hard as we can and in the process ignore our family or loved ones, and thus live a life that is out of balance. The gospel message encourages us to serve and be humble and not even worry about titles such as ‘Great’ or ‘Exalted.’ In other words, let’s do what we can to serve humbly and let the rest take care of itself. The rest, I believe, is in God’s hands.

reflect on the readings.

32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

1. Our first reading tells us: “Wisdom is found by those who seek her.” What wisdom have you sought and found? How have you used your newfound wisdom?2. Paul reassures us that death is not the end. How are we encouraging one another with these words?3. Paul seems to imply that the second coming of Jesus would occur in his lifetime. Two thousand years later, do we now think it’s imminent?4. In the Gospel, what does the parable of the bridesmaids teach us about the impor-tance of preparation? 5. What does the Gospel’s parable tell us about Judgement Day?

Does Cake taste better with icing? Of course! Are Holy Family’s great liturgies even better by being part of a Small Christian Community? Yes! Like a cake with icing, enrich and enhance your church experience by joining in the following: > Discuss the weekly readings in a friendly, informal setting > Reflect on how the Scriptures truly relate to your daily life and our complex world > Share God Sightings, and how you’ve experienced His presence and support > Find practical ways to bring the message of the Scriptures to life > Connect with others – find the group that’s right for you – expand your faith life … And hopefully … enjoy some cake and coffee in fellowship with others too!

November’ing:Remembering Our Loved Ones

We began November with the Feast of All Saints on No-vember 1, followed by the Feast of All Souls on November 2. These two days overlap each other as we remember and celebrate those who live now within the Communion of Saints. Beginning this weekend, and throughout the month of November, photos of those who have passed during the past year are displayed in the worship space. The Book of the Names of the Dead is placed by the Paschal Candle and baptismal font, symbolizing their Baptism into New Life. During this month, you are invited to write the names of your deceased loved ones in the Book, symbolizing our communion of one “Holy Family.”

The Parable Festival was designed to help children and adults understand what a parable is and how it works. Engaging, hands-on, experiences for understanding the Prodigal Son, The Pearl of Great Price, Jonah and the Whale, The Lost Sheep, and the Sower and the Seed were offered. Each child received a take home packet, along with their beautiful creations so they could share what they learned with their family and continue to study the parables at home.

What was the most exciting part of the festival? Many think it was the original parables our 4th-6th graders wrote and illustrated. These will be displayed in this coming week in the hallway leading to the Rectory. Check out the kids’ amazing work and be inspired.

Mary Schiffer & Laura Ferlita for planning and coordinating the festival, to our catechists, parents and Family Faith staff who made sure everything ran smoothly, to our Maintenance staff and to the kids who made all the work worth it. Parents if you came and helped but did not sign-up ahead of time make sure Laura Ferlita has your name.

The children worked diligently

creating memorable treasures to help remember the lessons of the

I heard that the Gospel has nothing to do with being ‘nice’. But isn’t being nice the same thing as kindness?

Grandparents are great examples of

biblical kindness.

a: The truth is, Jesus never said

anything to us about being “nice.” To be nice is to be pleasing or agreeable, which can be accomplished without helping others. Scripture instead talks about kindness as one of the Fruits of the Holy Spirit. Kindness is not a passive trait but is actively exhibited by doing good. Grandparents are

great examples of biblical kindness: they can’t wait to be with their grandchildren so they can spoil them with goodness and then send them on their way. I was told many years ago that a loving grandparent is the closest thing we have on this earth to an experience of God’s kindness.

Such unlimited generosity speaks to us of the presence of God, whose very nature is to shower abundant blessings on his children. One of the healthiest things you and your children can do spiritually is to take time to literally count your blessings. Then, as followers of Jesus, we are compelled to do the same for others: to actively and generously spread kindness.

Joe Paprocki is national consultant for faith formation for Loyola Press and author of A Church on the Move (Loyola Press, 2016).

HOLY DESPERATION

We Are Enough

To set aside the other person’s wrong and look only at our own doesn’t mean that the other person, or the system, or the world, is 100 percent right, good, and true. So culturally geared are we toward worldly results—winning, being number one—that many people see the idea of looking only on our part, and leaving aside the other’s wrongdoing, as an abdication of responsibility: a failure to “stand one’s ground.” But to turn the other cheek, or when a man asks for your cloak to give your tunic as well, is not to be a doormat. It’s to freely choose generosity. It’s to say I can afford to let you think I’m a loser because I so firmly know I’m acting from love. On the other hand, when we act from love, we love ourselves, too. “Give till it hurts” is a good idea as far as it goes, but if it veers into self-depletion rather than s rather than self-giving, something’s wrong. To be grounded in Christ is also to know that if we are sincerely doing our best, we are doing enough, are giving enough—that we are enough, period.

Excerpt from Holy Desperation by Heather King (Loyola Press, 2017)

New Table & Light Ministers 138 Family Faith students (grades 4, 5, & 6) have been trained to serve as Table & Light Ministers at our weekend liturgies. Family & Teen Faith

Upcoming Journey’s Events

November 25th Environmental Stewardship 9A-12P Join us as we do good to help restore God’s creation. We will be cutting Down Buckthorn (an invasive species) and making the biggest bonfire you have ever seen! There might just be hot chocolate and s’mores to roast. You are guaranteed to have fun while working hard. The difference we can make in just three hours will be very noticeable and get you service hours for your work! Go to http://www.chicagovoyagers.org/environmental-stewardship/ for the permission form. All participants must have a signed permission slip. Be part of this amazing program. Parents if you are interested in helping out with this program we can always use a few more folks. For more information contact [email protected] or [email protected]. Yes, this will count toward your family’s five hour volunteer contribution to Family & Teen Faith.

Adventure challenge update Our October 1st Journeys kick-off event was a big success. We had 23 participants (16 teens) from Holy Family. We also had 18 volunteers help run the event with some doing both! Teams were challenged with obstacles such as the hale bale wall and Don’t Spill the water bucket challenge along with running and canoeing to an island and back. Eldar Shanahan and Grant Ham (see picture) posted a time of 50 minutes, 33 seconds – winning their heat and having the second best team time for the entire day! Being on the cross country team comes in handy! Way to go fellows.

November 4th mountain biking @ Deer Grove Forest Preserve.

Come join the Journeys team on our mountain biking adventure on Nov 4th from 11A until 230P. Deer Grove is the oldest forest preserve in Cook County and offers the best off road experience in the northern suburbs. Come explore oak and hickory forests by bike. Go to http://www.chicagovoyagers.org/mountain-biking/ for the permission form. All participants must have a signed permission slip to participate.

Teen Faith’s Landmark Faith-based Outdoor Adventure Program After an amazingly successful first year, our Journey’s program opened with our first ever Adventure challenge, which was a huge success (see the update below). Now we are off to our Fall events - mountain biking and an Environmental Stewardship experience. Teens, being an environmental steward is a great way to earn community service hours for Faith classes or school requirements.

We congratulate Holy Family Catholic Academy for achieving AdvancED STEM Program CertiÞcation. The AdvancED STEM CertiÞcation Team was impressed with the school's inquiry-based learning environment which prepares the middle school learners to jump into the STEM program with conÞdence, curiosity, and enthusiasm!
