ABSTRACT

Vocabulary mastery is an important thing in learning language process. Through
mastering vocabulary the students will get the ability in learning a language easily,
among others in writing paragraph. In fact, there are still many students having the
lack of vocabulary mastery so that they find the difficulties in writIng the paragraph.
This condition is also found at the eighth grade students of State Junior High School 4
of Metro. It is the problem investigated by the writer.
The objectives of this research are to know the level of students’ vocabulary
mastery, to know the level of the students’ writing paragraph ability, and to know
whether there is any positive and significant influence between the students’
vocabulary mastery toward their ability in writing the paragraph among the eighth
grade students of State Junior High School 4 of Metro.
In this research, the writer uses test method to collecting the data. The writer
used test to know the levels students’ vocabulary mastery and writing the paragraph
ability. To know whether there is any positive and significant influence students’
vocabulary mastery and writing the paragraph ability, the writer analyzed the data by
using Chi-square formula. The result of data analysis is “ χ2
observed”= 20.24 is
higher than “ χ2
table”= 5.991
Based on the result of analysis data above, it can be inferred that Ho is
refused. It can be said that there is a positive significant students’ influence
vocabulary mastery toward writing the paragraph ability among the eighth grade
students of State Junior High School 4 of Metro in the academic year of 2009/2010.
