Commedia dell'Arte was a form of popular theatre that developed in the Italy of the early 16th century,

and was quickly exported throughout most of Europe. Shakespeare, Moliere and Goldoni along with

many other playwrights were influenced by this style of theatre.

The Commedia is typified by

The use of masks,

The use of stereotypical stock characters,

The use of broad physical comedy,

The use of improvisation and topical humor.

The Development of Commedia

Masks

In Europe, throughout the Middle Ages, masks were popular at the numerous fairs organized in

conjunction with popular and religious festivals, to mark seasonal changes, celebrate the harvest, or to

mark the various Saints days. Masks were even banned by the Church on occasion, as promoting

Paganism, which no double helped cement their popularity.

Commedia dell' Arte originated in the market places and the Italian streets of the early 1500's. Street

performers began donning masks with exaggerated comical features to draw attention to themselves.

These itinerant performers banded together into Troupes and by 1550 Commedia had become a firmly

established genre. These companies of performers would travel from town to fair, with family, pets and

all the necessary theatrical equipment, including backdrops, costumes and stage properties, bundled into

their carts. The carts themselves were often designed to be quickly and easily transformed into

performance stages high enough to allow the audience standing across a crowded piazza a comfortable

view.

What is Commedia dell’ Arte?

By Maestro Jack Tyler

6

Theatre at the time was restricted to male performers, but because these were family troupes, and

everyone had to work for the troupe to earn a living, women started performing in the productions. This

was pretty much the first time in Christian Europe that women were seen on the stage. The scandal was

just another assurance of the Commedia’s success.

Stock Characters

Most of the masks, and the characters, and costumes that developed to go along with them, soon became

standardized. Even when a new troupe came to town people could instantly recognize a certain character

by its mask, costume and behaviors. The populace loved the stock characters and their antics, much the

way more contemporary audiences loved the Marx Brothers' movies, or TV sit-coms with stock

characters like "Gilligan's Island" or "Friends".

Physical Comedy

Broad physical comedy was one of the mainstays of Commedia. The slap stick used in vaudeville, and

by circus clowns, was introduced by the commedia troupes. Pratt falls and other farce were an intrinsic

part of Commedia.

Improvisation and Topical Humor

The scenario or plot outline used by most troupes consisted of a few lines of set dialogue, or specific

stage instructions, scribbled on paper and simply pegged in the wings for the actors as an aid to memory,

and a guide to improvisation. The troupes would always adapt their performances to reflect the current

news of the day. They would also improvise the story depending on their interactions with the audience.

Commedia dell'Arte was always aimed at the common people. The basic themes of the Commedia can

always be reduced to basic situations: the struggle for power, conflicts between generations, romantic

intrigues, differences in social class, love, sex, hunger; the same basic things that interest us today.

Commedia dell’Arte at May Crown The Wastekeep Company of Players and Fools will present their new production, The Widow’s Assets, on Friday evening at May Crown. So be sure to come early, set up your camp, and then come to enjoy this year’s new production. If you are unable to make it Friday night, you can also catch this production at this year’s Greenwood Faire in Richland, WA on June 25th and 26th.

If you are willing to help set up on Thursday, you can set up your encampment. TRM are seeking recs before May Crown. Baron’s Ball: Insurance paperwork came through for both events.(Springfest and Baron’s) A&S championship and Bardic will happen at Baron’s. Mairghread would enjoy having contests sponsored. New business: Baroness Stjarna is organizing a demo on May 13th at Enterprise Middle School from 8-11 AM. There will be 250 children this time. There are 3 teams of 75. We might want to get two freezers. That would be $175, so we might want to raise the price of ice cream to cover the cost of the freezers. Lemons are $ 27.55 for a case. (about 100) We used 4 cases last year. Sign up on the list to get on the gate list. Sergeants: Her Excellency encouraged potential candidates to think about declaring their intent at Honor War, or Springfest.
