Baronial Council Minutes
In attendance: Styrkarr, Stjarna, Arthur, Rowena, Ulrik, Meghan, Catriona, Dyon, Xarrmon, Desdamona, Eion, Wiliam, Rontu, Phelan, Roth, Mairghread, Luaithrenn, Ysabella, Rowland, Einar, Viktoria, Inguz, Marcia, Chris, Amanda Called to order at 6:34 by Ysabella Approval of January Minutes: motion made, second, approved. Old Business: Kingdom A&S: Preliminary schedule is done, but not approved yet. There are going to be tight spaces for the event, but there is room. If you have anyone who needs crash space contact Mistress Catriona and she can arrange that. Rowena is the feastocrat. Ulrik the co-autocrat. Stykarr is the MIC. Don't forget there is NO LIVE STEEL OR ALCOHOL allowed on premises. Motion was made to approve 500.00 for the feast with an additional 250.00 allowed if need be. Approved, no abstention, no opposed. Maighread is asking for silk type banners to use as decoration for the hall. Contact her if you have any. The Fools Guild will be per-forming at the event. Tavern night is scheduled on Saturday night. The Barony asks that you bring finger foods to the event to assist. Springfest: Scheduled for June 5-6-7 at Sacajawea Park. We will be using a separate section of the park. It is on the south side of the main parking lot. RV parking has no service, unless you have spe-cial needs, and then you need to contact the park to arrange those. There is an additional 12.00 for special RV. Einar is the feastocrat. Phelan is the Contest Stewart. If you have any ideas for contests, contact him. Stykarr and Dyon are the MIC's Ithra: Marcia has a program on the website that you can look at the schedule for Kingdom A&S. There will be 2 tracks and 1 video. There will be Falconry with Chris and Piper. Bobbin Lace, Scroll layout, Wire weaving, and Medieval spices classes among others. There is also a registration form online or you can get the hard copy from Marcia at this council in the programs.

Officer Reports: Baron and Baroness: With the donations, there were 3 rib-bons given from the crown for the Largess donations. Each one represents 100.00 donated. They report that the Crown will be attending Kingdom A & S, and Honor War. There are 2 wars in April, Baroness War and Honor War. They are looking to present a new baronial recognition award. Stykarr will be attending Wealdsmere fighter practice, if you would like to ride with him, get in touch with him and he will provide the trans-portation. This will be Wednesday the 18th. Stjarna would like to thank everyone who attended to assist with the neck-lace making. She would also like to remind everyone that in-tends to try out for the Sgt. trials that their letter of intent is due by Springfest or the latest one month before Sergeants. Seneschal: Need an autocrat for Greenwood asap, Xarrmon and Desi agreed to autocrat the event. Gwen will not be at the April meeting. Reeve: Savings account balance as of 12-1-08 $7042.12 Checking $1439.21 As of January 31, 2009 Balances are Savings $ 1439.58 Checking $ 6722.87. Reimbursement for the necklace making, where pizza was purchased in the amount of $78.58. Motion made, second, approved. Also paid $58.00 in PO Box dues. Also, if you are not receiving your email or paper copy of the Word, let her know that as well. Webmaster: NTR Scribe: Still could use volunteers for scroll work. This can be from the design, painting, drawing, or scripting. Please con-tact Arthur if your interested. Heavy/Rapier Marshall: Practice is still going on with a good number of fighters. Youth Armor Combat: NTR Company of Archers: NTR First Aider: Will start looking at the supplies to see what needs to be updated and replaced. This will be Gruenfjell's last meeting as he is going back to swing shift at work. Chatelaine: Luairthrenn has taken the office. Will do Gold Key but would like someone to still take the position. Dean of Pages: Page meeting at her house beginning at 12:30 on the 15th. Grete Boke: NTR Herald: NTR however, a thank you to Ulrik for the Heralds box. It is beautiful. Librarian: There will be an inventory party on the 28th of Feb-ruary beginning at 6:00 pm. There will also be a heralds meeting. A&S: NTR...all stated above. Fools Guild: Preparing for upcoming performances. Will be performing at Greenwood, and Springfest as well as Kingdom A & S. Canton Business: There is a new Reeve as soon as they get done switching over the accounts from one bank to another. Svala will be the new Reeve. Reeve does have the year end report done and sent off. New Business: Amberguard would like to use the Pavilion for War in the Oasis. Rowland will take it there and bring it back.

Unto the most noble and prosperous populous of Wastekeep do Baron Styrkarr and Baroness Stjarna bring greetings.
We are fresh returned from being well-hosted at the Canton of Silverhart’s Fimbilvinter feast and tournament. Our thanks to
our gracious hosts, Baron Caieth and Baroness Aravere! We are looking forward to having Wastekeep shine again in the
eyes of the Kingdom as we host Kingdom Arts & Sciences. There is a wide spread of activities for everyone planned – food, crafting, Ithras, educational films, fighting, and of course Royal
Court with King Vik and Queen Inga. I hope all Wastekeep joins Stjarna and I in supporting the event and the autocrat team.
Other upcoming events and opportunities include the War in the Oasis on March 14th, a demo request for a church youth group on March 20th and 21st, and most excitingly – TWO WARS! The Hopping Phules War April 3rd – 5th in Vulkanfeldt and
Honor War in the upstart College of Lyonsmarche April 24th – 26th! Please join us in representing Wastekeep in battle, arts & science competitions, and revelry. All champions , Sergeants, fighters and previous fighters of Wastekeep, now is the time to honor your oaths! Repair your armor, re-wrap your weapons
and support your Baron as he goes to war.
We have enjoyed having the populace come to our house for many fun happenings these last couple months – an award neck-lace making party and lately a meeting for all the Baronial Pages and their Sponsors. The latter was topped off with a meeting of the Sergeants to begin rewriting and updating the tests for this year. Sergeants this year already looks to be the biggest ever
with around 7 candidates already expressing their intent! There

The site is the C. L. Booth Education Service Center, 1215 W Lewis St.,
Pasco WA 99301, (for Directions to the Site).
There is a large Competition Room with windows along one wall. Adjacent to the Competition Room is a Multimedia Classroom, which will be an excellent Ithra room. Across a small hallway is the building’s Lunch Room. There are
all sorts of vending machines, an ice machine, and a small kitchen area. There are plenty of tables for folks to sit around while eating and conversing. The
Barony of Wastekeep is going to provide most of the food for the weekend for all attendees. There will be a small breakfast as many will be at the hotel.
Lunches will be soups with bread, cheeses, and fruit and veggies. Dinner Sat-urday night will be a Tavern night with entertainment to be announced. We would request that everyone bring finger foods and the Barony will supply
Sausages on Rolls.
We have made arrangements with a local hotel for rooms for attendees. The Clover Island Inn has Single Queen rooms and Double Queen rooms. There are a couple of ADA rooms in the hotel. All rooms will be $89.oo per night. The hotel offers a Gourmet Continental Breakfast included with your room.
You must call the front desk and say you need a room at the Barony of Waste-keep price to make a reservation. The number is 1-866-586-0542. There are
some other hotels in the area, but they are further away. Here is a list of some
other local hotels.

There are some restaurants nearby and at the hotel if you do not wish to par-
take of the food being provided.

An Tir’s Kingdom Arts
and Science
Championship
The Barony of Wastekeep welcomes you to the An Tir Kingdom Arts & Sci-ences Championship, where the next A&S Champion of the Kingdom will be chosen. Whether you are a rising talent or experienced old hand, competitor,
judge, or onlooker, you will be part of the most challenging competition of the
Kingdom.
Merchants will offer fine wares in the market during the day, with hearty fare provided at the kitchen. A Tavern Night will make the evening merry. All
attending Tavern night are to bring finger foods: meats, cheeses, bread, fruits,
& desserts.
Remember! If you are entering the Championship competition, your letter of intent, including your complete contact information and list of entries, must be delivered to Their Majesties and to the Kingdom Minister of Arts & Sciences by Kingdom Twelfth Night! Refer to the Entrants Handbook for specifics on
the Competition!

Speaking of awards, we still need more recommendations for awards! Thanks to those who have responded recently to our requests. We rely heavily on input and feedback from all of
you! For a quick reminder of Baronial awards please refer to Master Ulrik’s excellent Baronial website, http://
www.wastekeep.org/awards.php. As you know, the King and Queen will be attending Kingdom A&S as well as Honor War so
now is also a good time to submit recommendations for King-dom-level awards. You may submit these recommendations through us (preferred method per TRMs) or submit them di-
rectly to their majesties.
Thanks again to everyone in Wastekeep taking part and being so active in working to make this Barony run so well and offer such
good and exciting events. We never tire of spending our time with you, our friends, and bragging about you all as we travel to
events in other Baronies. You make us look good!

The Book of Kells
The Book of Kells is one of the most famous manuscripts in the history of the world and was completed in about 800 AD. The vellum (calfskin) manu-
script contains transcriptions of the four Gospels, lavishly illustrated and ornamented. It is the most elaborate manuscript of its kind to survive from
the early Middle Ages.
The scribes and artists who created the Book of Kells were monks who lived in a monastery on the remote island of Iona, off the west coast of Scotland. The monastery was founded late in the sixth century by an Irish monk, St
Colmcille. At the time the manuscript was produced, Irish monks were renowned
throughout the rest of Europe for their work as scribes and illustrators.
The Book of Kells contains 680 pages (or 340 folios). Just two of the pages are not illustrated, while about thirty folios, including some major decorated pages, have been lost. The Book of Kells is the most famous manuscript in the Library of Trinity College Dublin where it is permanently on display.

About the Cover Page of this months Word:
The Chi Rho page is probably the best known of all the pages of Kells. It gets it name from the shortened Greek form of the name of Christ - XPI – and introduces St Matthew's account of the nativity. The three letters form the main image and just two words appear on the page – 'autem' meaning
'now', and 'generatio' meaning 'the birth'.
The page is full of images of people and animals: an otter with a fish, a pea-cock and two mice tugging at a eucharistic host while a pair of cats with
mice on their backs look on. Tiny drops of a pure red lead were used to form backgrounds, outlines and patterns, a style of ornament common in early
Irish manuscripts.
