Dear Friends, Mark Twain once said this about the Bible: “I have no problem with those parts of the Bible I don’t understand. It’s those parts of the Bible I do understand that give me fits.” As we have read together the Sermon on the Mount in recent weeks, some of you may feel the same. The words of Jesus challenge and inspire us all. In recent days, we have read of how Jesus blesses the poor in spirit, the meek, those who mourn, the persecuted, and those who hunger and thirst for God. We have heard Jesus call his followers “salt and light,” and then call his followers to season the world and shine their lights for God’s glory. We have also heard teachings on anger, lust, adultery, and the importance of being wise “stewards of our words.” At times we may feel the need to nod in agreement with Mark Twain, some of these readings, “give us fits.” When we take these verses one by one, these teachings are tough! It does not seem fitting or possible at times to live as a peacemaker, to speak language that is salted with grace and love, or to pray for those who are our enemies. At times when Jesus speaks we may even feel like Nicodemus in John’s gospel who heard Jesus teach and finally threw up his hands in wonder saying, “How can these things be?” (John 3:9) The good news is that we are not alone in this walk. God is with us. When we read the full Sermon on the Mount and listen to the words of Jesus in Matthew 5–7, we discover the teaching on prayer, the call to live in each moment seeking first God’s Kingdom, and the truth that Jesus is our Lord. This is news that saves us all. This is news that is truly life changing. I invite you to continue your reading of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7), for we will focus on “parts of the Bible” again this Sunday. Dear Friends,

Mark Twain once said this about the Bible: “I have no problem with those parts of the

Bible I don’t understand. It’s those parts of the Bible I do understand that give me fits.”

As we have read together the Sermon on the Mount in recent weeks, some of you may

feel the same. The words of Jesus challenge and inspire us all.

In recent days, we have read of how Jesus blesses the poor in spirit, the meek, those who

mourn, the persecuted, and those who hunger and thirst for God. We have heard Jesus call

his followers “salt and light,” and then call his followers to season the world and shine

their lights for God’s glory. We have also heard teachings on anger, lust, adultery, and the

importance of being wise “stewards of our words.” At times we may feel the need to nod

in agreement with Mark Twain, some of these readings, “give us fits.”

When we take these verses one by one, these teachings are tough! It does not seem fitting

or possible at times to live as a peacemaker, to speak language that is salted with grace

and love, or to pray for those who are our enemies. At times when Jesus speaks we may

even feel like Nicodemus in John’s gospel who heard Jesus teach and finally threw up his

hands in wonder saying, “How can these things be?” (John 3:9)

The good news is that we are not alone in this walk. God is with us. When we read the

full Sermon on the Mount and listen to the words of Jesus in Matthew 5–7, we discover

the teaching on prayer, the call to live in each moment seeking first God’s Kingdom, and

the truth that Jesus is our Lord. This is news that saves us all. This is news that is truly life

changing.

I invite you to continue your reading of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7), for we

will focus on “parts of the Bible” again this Sunday.
