A festivals week! This week celebrated Spain’s National Day; we saw their Air Force acrobatics team! We also visited a town in a very festive

mood, between their festival of Santa Maria la Real and the upcoming pimento festival (that’s

right, the flavorful piquant little red pepper!) We learned about the popular Navarre Bible and

explored a hermitage carved into the cliffs!

As Catholics, we are called to cher-ish, defend, and protect those who are most vulnerable, from the be-ginning of life to its end, and at every point in between.

During the month of October, the Church asks us to reflect more deeply on the dignity of every human life.

A Prayer for Respect of Life

God of life and love, you created us in your image and sent your Son to bring us life.

Instill in us a respect for all life, from conception to natural death.

Empower us to work for justice for the poor. Nourish us that we may bring food to the hungry. Inspire us to cherish the fragile life of the unborn. Strengthen us to bring comfort to the chronically

ill. Teach us to treat the aging with dignity and

respect. Bring us one day into the glory of everlasting life. We ask through Christ our Lord. Amen.

    October is Respect Life Month!

I’m thinking of a man who, on the surface, seemed to be the nicest guy you would ever want to meet. He has a wonderful wife and a great family. He's involved in the

community, coaches several sports teams and can be the life of the party at social gatherings. Yet, what no one knows, including his wife and family, is that this man is not such a nice per-son—-that he's involved in some very shady busi-ness deals and other things that he would rather not have his family and friends know about. At a certain point in their relationship, his wife senses that there is something “not right” with her husband. The fact that he's out a lot and seems to be very vague about what he's doing. One day she confronts him and he just says that he's had a lot to deal with at work. Then he starts to change his schedule a bit and is around the house more regularly. His wife begins to settle down and is less suspicious. She thinks to herself that maybe she was jumping to conclusions. But the reality is that this man is still up to his “not so nice” things. He's just learned to be more of a sneak, and cover his tracks a little better. So, he keeps on lying to his wife and contin-ues to be involved in things that would have made his kids ashamed of him. He was not the person people thought he was. Today we hear the strange story of a man who came to a party not dressed properly. This was so insult-ing to the host that the man is cast out into the darkness. Here’s what Christ is telling us: If you are not who you claim to be, speaking one way but acting another, God is going to call you on that!

So, using vivid imagery, Jesus is saying, “get your act together and stop doing the things that you know are wrong; and if you are caught up in something that has overtaken your life, get the help you need to break away from it. Don't live a lie!” As people of faith we are asked to follow the commandments, and when we sin, to seek forgiveness. The wedding garment is not about clothes at all, but rather it’s about our decision to amend our lives as Christ would have us do. We are invited to the “party” (to be part of Christ in heaven), but we can’t do that unless we are “properly attired”. The way that we do that is ask Jesus to help you get rid of the obstacles in your life, to stop pretending. We are properly attired when we live our lives that way Christ taught us, by being willing to forgive, by not putting our-selves first all the time, by participating in the Eu-charistic banquet that is prepared for us. These are the things that are important to God.

Our “yes” must mean “yes”, our “no” to sin and evil must mean just that. We can’t say we are with God and then be part of the evil of the world. Now, this doesn't mean that we have to be perfect before we enter the doors of the church, but we have to be open to al-lowing the Lord to transform us and heal us. Here’s what the great Scripture scholar William Bar-clay wrote: “Grace is not only a gift; it is a serious responsibility. We cannot go on living the life we lived before we met Jesus Christ. The door is open, but not for the sinner to come and remain a sinner, but for the sin-ner to come and become a saint.” Wear the wedding gar-ment. Come properly dressed to the party—the feast that the Lord provides. Our salvation really depends on it!

Why Do We Pray To the Saints and Those Who Have Gone Before Us? The Church, in her prayers and liturgies, frequently asks for the intercession of the saints and those

faithful who have gone before us into the next life (CCC 957-8, 2647). We can call upon the faithful depart-ed for their intercessory prayers for our intentions here on earth because we are joined to those who have gone before us through the Communion of Saints — through which the faithful on earth (the

Church Militant) are united as one body which the faithful in Purgatory (the Church Suffering) and the blessed in Heaven (the Church Triumphant).

The witnesses who have preceded us into the kingdom, share in the living tradition of prayer by the example of their lives, the transmission of their writings, and their prayer today. They contemplate God, praise him and constantly care for those whom they have left on earth. When they entered into the joy of their Master, they were “put in charge of many things.” (Mt 25:21) Their intercession is their most exalt-ed service in God’s plan. We can and should ask them to intercede for us and for the whole world. We

    believe in the communion of all the faithful of Christ, those who are pilgrims on earth, the dead who are being purified, and the blessed in heaven, all together forming one Church; and we believe that in this communion, the merciful love of God and his saints is always [attentive] to our prayers. (Paul VI, CPG 30;

CCC 962). Just as we ask for prayers from those on earth who have a close relationship with God, we likewise ask

for the intercession of saints because we know they are united with Christ (CCC 2683) — The Didache Bible — with Commentaries based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church

“Do not weep, for I shall be more useful to you after my death and I shall help you then more effectively than during my life.” — St. Dominic. “I want to spend my heaven in doing good on earth.” — St. Therese of Lisieux

Carlo was only 15 years old when he died in a hospital in Monza, Italy, in 2006, offering all his sufferings for the Church and for the Pope. He was a normal, handsome and popular boy. He enjoyed making his classmates and teachers laugh. Carlo used to say, “What’s the use of winning 1,000 battles if you can't beat your own passions?” Carlo's motto, "Being originals and not photocopies", reflects the life of a normal teen-ager who strived to be the best version of himself, living the ordinary in an extraordi-

nary way. He used his first savings to buy a sleeping bag for a homeless man he often saw on the way to Mass. This was not an isolated instance. His funeral was packed with many of the city's poor residents that Carlo had helped.

Raejsh, a Hindu who cleaned at Carlo's house, was impressed that someone "as handsome, young and rich” decided to live a simple life. “He captivated me with his deep faith, charity and purity,” he remarked. Through Carlo’s example, Raejsh decided to be baptized in the Catholic Church.

Purity was very important in Carlo's life. "Each person reflects the light of God", was something he commonly said. It hurt him when his classmates did not live according to Christian morals. He would encourage them to do so, trying to help them understand that the human body is a gift from God and that sexuality had to be lived as God had intended. "The dignity of each human being was so great, that Carlo saw sexuality as something very special, as it was collaborating with God's creation," his mother recalled.

Carlo's true passion was the Eucharist: "his highway to heaven". This led to his mother's conversion. A woman who had only gone "three times to Mass in her life" was conquered in the end by the boy's affection for Jesus. She enrolled herself in a theology course so she could answer all the questions of her young son.

At the age of 11, Carlo began to investigate the Eucharistic miracles that have occurred in history. He used all his computer knowledge and talents to create a website that traced that history. It comprises 160 panels and can be downloaded by clicking here [please explore the different tabs].

Carlo could not understand why stadiums were full of people and churches were empty. He would repeatedly say, “They have to see, they have to understand."

In Summer 2006, Carlo asked his mother: "Do you think I should become a priest?" She answered: "You will see it by yourself, God will reveal it to you." At the beginning of that school year he did not feel well. It seemed like a normal flu. But when he didn't get better, his parents took him to hospital. "I'm not getting out of here," he said when he entered the building.

Shortly after, he was diagnosed with one of the worst types of leukemia – Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML or M3). His reaction was striking: "I offer to the Lord the sufferings that I will have to undergo for the Pope and for the Church, so as not to have to be in Purgatory and be able to go directly to heaven."

He died shortly after. “He is being a priest from heaven," says his mother. WATCH THIS VIDEO TO LEARN MORE ABOUT CARLO !

Oct. 18th — Feast of St. Luke, the Evangelist Luke was not an Apostle but a missionary companion of St. Paul. He wrote one of the major portions

of the New Testament, a two-volume work comprising the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles (a continuation of his Gospel). Luke shows the parallel between the life of Christ and that of the Church. He is the only Gentile Christian among the Gospel writers. Tradition holds him to be a native of Antioch, and Paul calls him “the beloved physician” (Col 4:14). Since the Acts of the Apostles closes while St. Paul is

under house arrest in Rome awaiting trial, he may have completed Acts no later than AD 62; his Gospel was likely written before that time. Luke appears in Acts during Paul’s second journey, remains at Philippi for several years until Paul returns from his third journey, accompanies Paul to Jerusalem and remains near him when he is imprisoned in Caesarea. During these two years, Luke sought information and interviewed persons who had known Jesus. He accompanied Paul on the dangerous journey to Rome where he was a faithful companion (after everyone else deserts Paul in his final imprisonment and sufferings, it is Luke who remains with Paul to the end): “Luke is the only one with me,” Paul writes (2 Tim 4:11).

Luke's inspiration and information for his Gospel and Acts came from his close association with Paul and his companions as he explains: "Since many have undertaken to set down an orderly account of the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed on to us by those who from the be-ginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, I too decided, after investigating everything care-fully from the very first, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus" (Luke 1:1-3). Luke also has a special connection with the women in Jesus' life, especially Mary.

Reading Luke's gospel gives a good idea of his character as one who loved the poor, who wanted the door to God's kingdom opened to all, who respected women, and who saw hope in God's mercy for eve-ryone. He is often shown with an ox or a calf because these are the symbols of sacrifice — the sacrifice Jesus made for all the world.
